"For more than two decades, FuGaKyu has been a stalwart of Japanese restaurants with its two locations in Brookline and Sudbury. It’s known for offering private dining rooms for small and medium-sized groups, where guests can have an extra bit of privacy behind sliding doors. The menu is expansive, featuring tempura, house curry, and katsu, as well as nigiri and sashimi from the raw bar." - Valerie Li Stack

"The menu at Fugakyu is expansive, with sushi, karaage, tempura, and rice dishes, just to name a few. But don’t skip over the noodle section, which features soba, ramen, and udon (pretty much the trifecta of beloved Japanese noodles). Try the zaru udon, which comes with cold udon noodles served with tsuyu, a dipping sauce that is light but delightfully savory and sweet. Fugakyu is open for indoor dining, as well as takeout and delivery." - Karen Wilber

Beautiful restaurant, Japanese interiors, coy pond and fountain, waitresses wearing kimonos, private booth. That adds a lot to the experience. We went there for dinner on a winter Saturday night, two couples. The food was good and nicely plated, the prices were high but fair, considering the quality of the restaurant. The main downside is the rush. It started with the revolving water fountain in the vestibule. Instead of flowing slowly to create a relaxing atmosphere, it revolves fast and gushes water loudly. Then in the booth, the waitress was in a hurry to take orders, to remove dishes even when not fully eaten, and to bring us the bill at the end. We paid and then stayed a bit longer to talk, we did not order dessert or tea since the check had been closed. I did not appreciate the wipes they serve with the meal. Those are very bad for the environment, not biodegradable. I'd rather use the napkins and wash my hands in the restroom. I understand they need to make money and clear tables, but when paying around $50 pr person- you want to enjoy and take your time. Perhaps it's more relaxed on weekdays. Good restaurant, enjoy !

Google
Stunning food. Sushi was a little sticky but tasted amazing. Sashimi was brilliant. We had a table of about 15 of us. The service could of been a bit slicker but we were well fed by the end of the night. Would definitely visit again when I'm back in Boston.

Google
A decent Japanese restaurant with variety of options. Not the best quality, but good enough to enjoy a good time with your people. It's quite a spacious space, and service is a decent as well.

I love the decor in the restaurant, especially the Koi fish pond next to the waiting area. The sound of the flowing water makes me feel calm. I brought a Saudi friend and she became quite interested in Japanese culture due to her experience! I enjoyed the Unagidon. I also appreciate that the servers dress in traditional clothes!

We had a good experience in our private booth. It was disappointed the tv didn’t work and it could get hot in there so we needed to have the door open some times. It wasn’t hard to hit the minimum for our booth with the menu prices. Our server Julie was great, she was so friendly and made great suggestions for food and drinks.

Exceptional atmosphere and attentive service make this place fun for a casual night out or for a larger celebratory evening with family/friends/colleagues. They offer a specialty menu that features seasonal selections from Japan, which is a sign of quality and attention to detail. I recommend the hamachi sashimi and blue mackerel.

Google
This was the first time that I saw a sukiyaki like this: it was served in a bowl with twisted cooked wagyu, different from other restaurants where sukiyaki is typically offered a pot with raw wagyu served separately on a plate. This cooking style makes the wagyu being somewhat overcooked. The server told us it is supposed to be like this and if we want a pot then we should order double portions and pay double price. But I don’t believe this is the authentic cooking style and I have also been to many restaurants including Momokawa at NYC which offer pots and plates of wagyu for even one person’s portion. Not to say we have paid $50 for two persons’ portions. Their unagi is good, but also expensive ($35).

With its kimono-wearing servers and private booths, Fugakyu aims to create an atmosphere that closely mirrors an authentic Japanese private dining experience. However, during my recent Friday night visit, the food didn't quite match the impressive setting, feeling overpriced for its average quality. From the appetizers, my friend and I shared the Geso Age and Seafood Tempura. The tempura was mediocre, but thankfully, the Geso Age was encased in a delightfully crispy batter, offering a satisfyingly chewy texture that became the highlight of the meal. For entrées, we chose the Unaju and the FugaKyu Boat. The Unaju, a tender BBQ eel over rice, was enjoyable. However, Fugakyu Boat was quite disappointing. Despite its elaborate presentation, some sushi pieces hadn't been properly thawed, leading to an off-putting texture and excess moisture. While FugaKyu delivers an engaging ambiance that might intrigue those new to Japanese private dining, the food was underwhelming overall. For a restaurant striving to offer an authentic Japanese experience, the quality of the food should match the level of its atmospheric authenticity. Would probably not come back.

Yelp
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised. The place is more grandiose than I expected, especially with the decor and two floors. The menu is extensive and it was difficult to decide what to get! We settled on the spicy salmon maki, the Futo maki, and the chicken katsu curry. Spicy salmon- not a solid piece of salmon, rather a mushy consistency, and not spicy at all. But good flavor! Futo- had Japanese pickles, crabstick, spinach, mushrooms, fish powder. Spinach overpowered it, but otherwise the roll lacked flavor where I expected more going on. Chicken katsu curry- it was my first time trying this dish, and I loved it, it was a perfect comfort dish. The chicken wasn't overly breaded or too crispy and was perfectly tender. The curry was basically a gravy with cubed carrots and potatoes (I think) and wasn't spicy. Would get again! I also got a lychee martini, which was very simple, refreshing, and not too sweet. Service was quick even on a fairly busy Friday night. I'd recommend making reservations, and I'd come back!

Yelp
I recently came here and was excited to try for the first time because of how beautiful the food and ambiance looked... the place is beautiful and in alot of the reviews it says that, BUT FOOD is mediocre nothing left us wanting more...unfortunately. Just basic, nothing was fun or flavorful that left our palettes bored. Quite expensive for what it is, but that could be for the ambiance. From the moment we walked in to the waitstaff no one looked happy and personable just standoffish or not wanting to be there :/ I was truly disappointed and probably won't be back... people come out to eat for the experience and the innovative thought in food and cocktails. I feel like this restaurant needs a revamp ! A new chef or new energy as it was a little of a drab...I heard great things with purple shell. Will try that next..

Yelp
The restaurant itself is really unique. Everyone was wearing traditional Japanese clothing, even down to the shoes. We were seated with a paper partition that you'd find in Japan. The sushi itself was okay, nothing special in my opinion and kind of overpriced. The only thing that I was like wow about was the kamameshi pot with short rib. The flavor of the beef was so savory and delicious and very tender. There was a lot of rice in there unexpectedly and it had lots of mushrooms to make the dish more robust. It also came with this seafood soup that came in a teapot and was really good. We got multiple cups worth and got to eat the seafood once the broth was all gone And for dessert we got the matcha fried ice cream and tiramisu. Also nothing really special about these desserts. If you do come here, come here for the Kamameshi, the only thing that made this place special food wise

Yelp
Something has changed at this once top spot for Japanese food. The presentation has gone oddly modern (glass trays, dry ice and flashing light cube), which is sort of fun and not at the same time, and the now there is a "premium experience" charge for the little tatami rooms that used to be just another seating option. From the on-line reservations site: "Book a private booth with sliding doors from the main dining room for your meal service. The $25 deposit per person is not refundable in the event of a cancellation within 24-hours or no-show. Deposits will be refunded once minimum is met. Note that we have a $75 per person minimum spend for our private rooms. This experience provides the private room for you to enjoy but does not include any other extras, the menus are the same as the rest of the restaurant." Huh. The tatami rooms are nice but not so special an experience that a premium would be happily paid. The food is still good and the servings generous or the rating would have been lower.

Yelp
This place reminded me of the anime "Demon Slayer" because of the wooden Japanese booths, along with the employees wearing kimonos. It was a really nice environment and quiet, which was nice for date night! The food overall was solid and yummy, and it was overpriced BUT the price was somewhat justified for the quantity of food that came out and you're paying for the experience. We thought it was worth it! The employees were super friendly and responsive if needed. There are also buttons that come with each booth to call the waiter if needed (reminds me of home). Overall, I would recommend this place for a nice date night/dinner plans.

Yelp
I ordered delivery. $35 Sashimi Lunch. This is how it looked like, I cannot believe you charged me 35 for an 8-piece sashimi that only had salmon tuna hamachi and squid! And it didn't even came with rice!

Kevin Z.

Yelp
Food is solid, very similar to what you would find at other medium-to-high end sushi spots. Prices are definitely steep, bordering outrageous. Service is attentive. Ambiance is very nice inside, they've definitely put a lot of money and energy into decorating it. If you're looking to splurge for sushi in Boston, I think there are some better options out there.

Yelp
This restaurant is for all my foodies who love good quality Japanese cuisine. The restaurant is located on a street with great parking especially on Sunday (it's free) ! The service was fast and efficient, drinks are to die for I got the lychee goblet drink and it was FIRE! But boozy and I loved it! Restaurant is so cute with have to do the booth next time !

Dennis M.

Yelp
Service was prompt and polite. The appetizers were not large but enough. The drink, Forbidden Love, was fruit punch and a lot of alcohol. The entrees were decent but you got my friends totally wrong. She was starving so did not want to raise a fuss. The interior of the restaurant was very nice albeit very 1964.

Jennifer T.

Yelp
The setting is one of a kind and unexpected. Super spacious inside and had lots of private rooms for you to reserve. The private rooms definitely make your meal feel more intimate and quiet. We mostly ordered sushi while we were here. The cuts are super thick and tastes fresh. The wait staff were also super friendly as we were celebrating a birthday and was able to cut the cake there. Food was overall a little pricey but I think you're mostly paying for the ambiance.

Yelp
Really delicious! The restaurant is right off of Beacon Street, there is metered street parking nearby. After 8pm and on Sundays, metered parking is free in Brookline. When you walk in, it is such a surprise - there are two floors with so many tables. We had a 7:45pm reservation and were sat really quickly on the second floor. The menu is several pages long, and there are vegetarian options! We started with the spicy tuna and avocado maki rolls. We also shared the pan fried gyozas which were so yummy! The rolls came with 6 pieces each and the gyozas came with 5. We ordered the chicken fried rice which came in a really cool bowl, filled to the brim! As my entree I ordered the chicken teriyaki which came with miso soup and white rice. We also ordered the hibachi short rib, which came on a small hot plate. Delicious! Definitely nice-sized plates - and had to take some home. All-in-all would come back again. They have drinks, dessert, and so much more!

Yelp
Fugakyu has been on my list to try for a while, so I was looking forward to when we had a chance to come by for a business dinner last week. We had reservations for our group of 8, but fortunately the place was decently empty when we arrived around 7pm on a weekday. The front of house and servers were all super nice and helpful, from seating us quickly and being really helpful when we were deciding what to order. I was also really impressed with the really ornately decorated interior in a traditional Japanese style. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal was rather disappointing. Everything we ordered certainly looked great - amazing presentation for the chirashi bowls and especially for the large plates, with the very cool dry-ice smoky vibes. However, this belied the poor quality of much of the fish we had. I ordered a chirashi entree, which was not great. Many cuts of fish tasted frozen (especially the tuna), and even the rice was super dry. Other pieces included the shrimp, which was chewy and rubbery, and the mackerel, which left an extremely pungent aftertaste. Not great, and definitely not even close to being worth $40. Other things we ordered were a little better. Agedashi tofu was decent - crispy on the outside but with little to no flavour on the inside of each piece. One of us had the teriyaki beef entree - sauce was nice but steak was really chewy and hard to cut. The kaze makimono was probably the best part of the meal - overall not bad (I liked the spicy sake maki and the spicy tuna maki). However, for the price I would definitely say it was not worth in either quality or quantity. That assessment probably applies to the whole meal, to be honest - for this subpar quality at such a high price point (!), I definitely did not leave dinner with a good taste in my mouth (in both senses). I don't think I'll be coming back.

Yelp
Just simply the best try the 1910 and both appetizers. Love it all. Always busy and worth the wait.

Yelp
This was a truly a scary experience. The waiter got two orders wrong and miscommunicated the types of fish that come in a combo platter. Fishes that we cannot and did not eat . He specifically explained that only tuna salmon and yellowtail come in the platter but their was also squid and octopus which we were very clear about not being able to eat When we tried to return and explain, we were met with the most hostile and condescending exchange . Instead of taking it back he was extremely angry and proceeded to check his cameras to see if we were lying . We also had ordered 5 spicy tuna rolls but they charged us for 6. Any other restaurant would believe us but this restaurant did not and were actually angry about it. Moral of story is if they get the order wrong you they will not believe you and even argue with you to the point where it gets scary. I read from other reviews that this place used to be amazing but now has new owners who are clearly destroying the reputation it once had. Its actually a shame because the decor and vibe was actually very nice but the staff was not.

Shardul T.

Yelp
Unique and very perfect ambiance! I would rate 10/10 for ambiance in this restaurant - you have the option of having private 2- or 4- people tables, which looks unique! We were frankly not so impressed by the food. I would rate it 7.5/10: - Maki rolls had a thick coating of sea weed, which took away the joy of its flavor/dressing - Katsu chicken was expected to have a curry, why was it different altogether? - Fried chicken was a little too bready The service though, was amazing and our server took great care in knowing what we wanted or not! I recommend trying this restaurant

Yelp
Fugakyu Japanese Cuisine was a complete disaster. The staff was incredibly rude and unprofessional, making the entire visit extremely unpleasant. The sushi was subpar and tasted stale. This restaurant is not worth your time or money--stay away!

Yelp
Don't know where to start. Im was a client at this Restorant from day one over 20!years !!! Now this place is going down. New management is not welcoming and rude. GM Oriana is talking to the costumers like we owe her something. Can emerging how she treating her employees!! NEW MANAGEMENT is sucks and bringing this place down !! If new owner cares about business he would see my review and do something about it. Place is dirty and spider hanging off the ceiling.( photo attached ) Ceiling is broken at second floor and pealing .( photo attached ) Bethroom are dirty and distrusting!! Wish old ownership stayed and we would enjoy this place. Air condition did not work and was extremely hot ! I asked them to do something, and she told me it's already couple days not working and they called the technician. This place was my favorite sushi place for a wile , now it's place not to go!!!

Grace H.

Yelp
I loved the food, the whole interior, and everyone was super nice! The food came out relatively quick and the waiter was very patient with answering our questions. We got an assortment of rolls and my favorite was sexy girl and it was so good I got another one! I would come here again!

Joy Q.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and cute Japanese decor and indoor garden. This is a cute spot for inmate dining and gathering with friends Big menu and plenty of options for everyone. My favorites were the fresh sashimi - good quality of fish

Yu Ya H.

Yelp
The place is a two-storey building with lots of seating options. A good place to go for large party (6+) gatherings and it even has traditional booth style dining areas but it is first come first serve. It has a nice ambience. The food was comparable to other Japanese places. The makis and rolls were great and they were able to accommodate for the food allergy for our group well. The sashimi were fresh well. The cocktails are worth trying. Overall a great place but on the pricier end. And just a tad long waiting time for food especially during the weekends.

Wendy Z.

Yelp
My review is based on a to go order, because I got there 40 minutes before closing time to a pretty empty ish restaurant and was told that the restaurant isn't open for sitting. Weird because there were a few tables seated, but oh well. I ordered some lobster tempura, veggie tempura, and the spicy girl roll. The spicy girl roll was pretty solid. My complaints come from the tempura. First, maybe this was only for to go orders, but the veggie tempura was extremely soggy. I ate it pretty quickly as soon as I got it and didn't leave it in the box too long too. Second, the lobster tempura was really disappointing. I thought it would be nice whole chunks of lobster deep fried to a golden perfection, but there were only like 4 measly pieces of lobster and mostly rice in a roll. I thought I was only getting lobster, not the extra condiments to fill up space. The worst was that it was $25. My to go experience was not the best. The food was meh, and the price was really expensive and frankly not worth it. The restaurant inside did have extremely nice decor and was very beautiful though. Hopefully this is just a coincidence for my bad experience. It was really expensive

Bea T.

Yelp
Fugakyu remains to be my go-to sushi place with authenticity. Came here during the pandemic when we all had to be masked but I've been returning since and the sushi quality is still top-notch. Never been disappointed and the services always the best. Love my uni sushi, caterpillar roll, and spider roll are my favorites here.

Jennifer B.

Yelp
We did our wedding rehearsal dinner here and everyone raved about the food. This is the most beautiful, authentic experience in Boston, even my parents approved (anyone who has Asian parents can confirm that 99% of the time, they say "could have cooked better food at home"). The highlights of the night were the live scallop set, agadashi tofu, broiled eggplant, hamachi Kama (grilled yellowtail collar), hotetagi (scallop on the shell), and the curry katsu. My parents live in Asia and they said it was the most authentic meal they've have stateside

Jessica M.

Yelp
My first meal in Boston, with an attitude of a waitress named Julie. Our waitress was not attentive and wanted us to keep ordering. Overpriced for low quality food. Shrimp tempura roll had little to no shrimp in it. $70 for 2 rolls and sashimi. The food also made my husbands stomach upset immediately after eating and for the following 2 days after. Do not recommend spend your $ elsewhere, unless you like spending your money on low quality food!

Joe B.

Yelp
We paid $42 for seafood fried rice. It was a large amount of fried rice with two shrimp, two scallops, a piece of squid and a clam. Absolutely overpriced.

Alexi K.

Yelp
-- Expect more than 1 hour until you get your food. I've been on a busy Saturday night as well as a dead Wednesday 1 pm, both large party (6) and small party (2). Both took over an hour from being seated to getting food on the table -- I recommend viewing the menu ahead of time as there is so much available to order the menu can be a little overwhelming -- The sushi rolls pictured were pretty good - not the best and not the worst. The fish is fresh. -- Parking is actually pretty easy, at least during the daytime, as there are metered spots across the street and some metered street parking in front of the restaurant

Milton K.

Yelp
Large 2-level restaurant with plenty of nooks and crannies on both floors offers many different seating options. We, a party of 2, we seated on the second floor in a cute spot overlooking the main dining room on the first floor. We ordered geso (squid) karaage, nasu dengaku (grilled eggplant brushed with miso and a sprinkling of fried minced garlic), hamachi kama (collar), chawanmushi, asari in some sort of miso-based broth, ikura sushi and unagi temaki (hand roll). Food came out quite quickly considering the restaurant was quite full for a Sunday 7:00 pm reservation. Sapporo draft took a while to arrive but was ice cold. Servings are generous especially the hamachi kama, which was well prepared. Geso karaage presented as 2 skewers and were a little too crispy. Nasu dengaku was a nice sized serving and tasty. The chawanmushi had to be the largest serving we've ever had on either coast, or anywhere in Japan. Egg custard was steamed just right with a whole shrimp, scallop, enoki, 2 ginkgo nuts, a sliver of lemon rind. The clams were large and plentiful but the miso-based broth overwhelmed the clams delicate taste. The ikura negiri was spot on and my unagi temaki with avocado featured a large portion of unagi and avocado. Service was friendly and tea and water refilled promptly. One thing I found off-putting was the large screen tv showing an MLB game between the Mets and Angels. More appropriate for a sports bar rather than an authentic izakaya. Would still recommend trying this restaurant. Good value, large servings, taste relatively authentic and friendly customer service.

Yelp
AMBIENCE (4/5): - One of my favorite things is the individual cubicles that they seat groups in. It might not be the fanciest place but these cubicles do make the dining experience more intimate - Since there was just the 2 of us, we were seated at the bar which gave us a great show of watching the sushi masters at work. We could smell how good the food tastes everytime they blow torch one of the rolls SERVICE (5/5): - Great as always. Came here on NYE and thought we might have to wait but was seated immediately. The server also came right when we sat down with menus - The drink and food came at a reasonable time. We appreciated that the rolls were all presented at the same time FOOD/DRINKS (4/5): - Alaskan Maki (5/5) = can't go wrong with salmon, avocado & bonito flakes. A classic that hits the right spot when you wanna just taste & enjoy the salmon in a roll w/o too many other sauces or confounding flavors - Rainbow Maki (5/5) = always our go to favorite. A great way to try out a variety of fish without committing to just the one. The crab meat & the small fish roe really highlighted the roll even more - Oyster Tempura Maki (3/5) = nothing really special. Couldn't really taste the oyster in there and the tempura made it a bit more dry - Spicy Girl Maki (4/5) = The eel with the eel sauce combined with the spicy mayo that pairs perfectly with the salmon makes this roll perfection. We also appreciated the tempura crumb on top or else the roll would've been lacking texture since everything in there was a bit mushy. Good for ppl who are sauce lovers - Yuzu Delight (5/5) = absolutely loved the drink. Yuzu is a difficult flavor to bring out, esp in an alcoholic cocktail but this tasted just like Yuzu. It's citrusy and not too sweet either with a beautiful pinkish-orange hue. Would order again OVERVIEW: - Great go to sushi place in Allston/Brighton. Never a wait bc the place is so big - Fresh fish as always with a unique variety to choose from straight from shipments from Japan - A little on the expensive side but the freshness of the ingredients and the size of the rolls make it worth it

Maggie Z.

Yelp
Came here because there were a lot of good reviews. It looks like they did a re-vamp because when I entered, it said Re-open since July 11th. I was a party of 1 and they sat me at the bar. I was ok with that to not take up a table. I sat myself at the bar bar but it was chaotic and it was just a 3 seater bar but really a spot to take orders etc since there was also just 1 guy serving and making drinks for the entire restaurant. I then saw seats at the actual sushi bar and I thought I sat myself incorrectly. Asked to go over there and then asked for a menu but then the owner told me the sushi bar wasn't open even though I asked TWO people before I sat down if I could. Anyway, I told her I wanted a table then. I was seated upstairs in a confined boxes area with 2 sets of tables for 2. There was a couple on a date I assume so I felt like I was really intruding and a bit uncomfortable since I was literally 2 feet away from them that I heard every single word. There are supposed to be curtains to divide our tables but they aren't down. As for service, subpar and lacking. I ordered a sashimi combo that didn't state I would get a roll so either they took sashimi away from me and just subbed a basic California roll... or I got an extra roll IDK Pricy, ok quality, little quantity etc. I wouldn't come back for how my entire experience was, solo. Can't imagine the headache it would've been if I came with friends or my boyfriend

Yelp
Love the food here! My second time going and enjoyed it so much! Everyone that I recommend this place to have been delighted because is hard to find a good sushi place in Boston, and I'm so happy I discovered fugakyu. The makis are big in comparison to other places.

Mike B.

Yelp
We come here almost once a week and spend in excess of $250 for two, but tonight was a miss. For starters, the fire alarm went off, and while the restaurant had no control over that, standing out in the soaking rain was no picnic. One of our orders was missed, water was never refilled, and we were then overcharged for sake. The waiter, Jeremiah, had a poor attitude, and we still tipped him 20%. What's most astounding is that even after the inconvenience of having to stand in the soaking rain, the management couldn't have thrown in a free dessert. I regret not just walking out when the fire alarm went off, as other tables had done, as tonight was a poor experience, and I'll be taking Fugakyu out of our rotation.

J L.

Yelp
I have never experienced worser service at any other restaurant I have been to. To start off, we had a reservation for our party and once we arrived, the receptionist was confused and could not locate the reservation. We were then momentarily led to a table upstairs, and in the midst of 5 minutes, were then told to leave the table as it was for another party. So the entire party was shuffled back down to the waiting area. Soon we were then led to a private booth, which they hastily put together but obviously above seating capacity. All 8 of us were then squeezed into a booth meant for 6 people max. We had to complain because we were literally suffocating from being squeezed like sardines. They finally moved us to another more spacious booth. The inconvenience was one thing but the experience was humiliating and did not sit well with us. When I confronted the Manager before we left, I was told that there was confusion with our reservation time which we had called to adjust way ahead. The Manager went on to explain reasons why they may have messed up the reservation and tried to justify the confusion. I felt the blame was placed back on the customer for adjusting the reservation time rather than them owning up to the mistake. Notwithstanding, the food itself was mediocre, nothing truly memorable or anything to rave about. The Ichiban Mori Combo was supermarket sushi served on a fancy plate. The sukiyaki was overly sweetened and made me slightly nauseous. Overall, very much on the pricier side for what you get. Safe to say, I will not be returning again.

Yelp
Please don't eat here. Just came home from spending $350+tip for 5 ppl on a special birthday meal and I'm crying from a broken heart. Not one dish left people delighted. Or even remarking on tastiness for any thing except the 1 duck appetizer dish and the miso soup. It was all bland, unattractive, and tasted the same. Agedashi tofu, my favorite Japanese dish, was even void of bonito/daikon flavor. Everyone ate politely but didn't say a word on the food. Afterward, shoulders shrugged and they nicely said, "it was...ok." How can a place last so long, charge so much, and serve such lame dishes? I'm devastated. I earn very little money but this was a big night and I was ready to spend. The dinner was truly atrocious. One extra star for the duck & miso soup that wasn't watery.

Yelp
Excellent ambience, service, and food. We had reservations at 7:30P on a Saturday and unlike many Boston restaurants were seated right on time -- so thumbs up for that. We were seated in a nice booth (that I believe our host has reserved in advance). We were very happy with our cocktails. The LIchitini was delicious as was another cocktail we got (I want to say volcano, but I'm not 100% sure of the name). The appetizers were good -- I especially liked the soft shell crab. For dinner, we shared this fabulous shogan combo, which came out smoking (dry ice) with tons of outstanding sushi and sashimi. The lobster rolls were especially interesting, but everything was very fresh and delicious.

Yelp
This Japanese restaurant, specializing in sushi, has seen a decline in sushi quality over the past six years, which is disappointing considering its previous 5-star status. The prices are on the higher side, but the service is good, and the ambiance is pleasant. Despite the decrease in sushi quality, the overall dining experience remains above average.

Yelp
Great food great service, I had the dragon roll garlic edamame and sashimi fatty tuna. Would definitely recommend this place. We will be going back next time we're in town

Yelp
Most excellent Japanese food in Brookline, on par with meals in New York, San Francisco, Vancouver. Get a private booth. Book it and wait if needed. A must. Just like in Japan, Seoul.... Agedashi tofu- silken and subtle Tempura- a light batter, as it should be. Not a Kyoto-finest, batter made in front of you-- but eons beyond the deep fried Oreo batter that passes in most places Chirashi- chef's choice, excellent quality fish Katsu chicken-like a fine japanese schnitzel And fine Udon An expensive meal, but worth it.

Yelp
I've been here a couple times. Each time was a good experience. This time I got the sukiyaki. Sukiyaki is a Japanese style hotpot where the sauce compared to other hotspot, is more sweet than savory. There's an abundant amount of beef up in this dish. There's also an abundant amount of vegetables etc. basically all you can expect in a traditional Chinese hotpot but the broth is sweeter. They give you an raw egg that you mix and dip the meat into. One thing about the meat is that it is cooked medium rare, so it is still a little pink. They offer to cook it for you in the kitchen if you order 1 sukiyaki but if you order more than 1, they bring out the stove and you can cook it for yourself for that experience. However, it is probably best to just have them cook it in the kitchen.

Yelp
For the price that we paid, it was not worth a second trip here. For our reservations, we were seated in a room. It was cute but definitely needs a deep clean... We had no idea that we had to pay $75 per person in order to dine in this room. Their sushi is okay at best. It's not $75 per person good. Note to future diners: save yourself the money and dine in the regular living room. No need to spend $75 per person because sushi quality is 2 out of 5 at best. Definitely not worth the money. We ordered FuGaKyu boat and sushi. Again quality is 2 out of 5 at best. Nothing to write home about. The restaurant forgot to serve us the makimomo's we ordered. They also forgot to include our chicken karaage chicken orders. Note to future diners: make sure you got all that you ordered. I should not have to check and remind the restaurant of our missing orders this many times. Worst of all, 2 people from our dining party had stomach aches and foreseeable diarrhea. This makes me question the quality of their fish. Overall, I would not come back. There are many other restaurants that serve quality sushi for less in the area.

Yelp
I've never paid so much for so little. Maybe if the menu shrank by 60%, Fugakyu would be able to focus on delivering fresher dishes at slightly better value (I get that inflation and overall costs are out of control). My $32 uni was teetering on fresh and the portion for the price fell short. My $17 spicy tuna salad was hardly spicy and so full of mayo, the tuna was lost. My $46 "sushi three kinds" was generous but really underwhelming. The miso soup had no soul, just the standard cloudiness without even the slightest garnish of tofu or seaweed. My $44 bottle of sake was tasty but served cool / kind of room temp. I ordered a dry Grey Goose martini and was presented with a sweet vermouth concoction that I politely returned. Grab hot pot or head to Hamilton instead. Your night and your wallet with both be better off. I hope Fugakyu can figure this out. Rooting for them!

Yelp
Pretty good sushi but definitely on the pricey side but they have a lot of options to choose from and I really like the atmosphere of the restaurant!! The decorations and the set up remind me home (japan) no complaints on the food itself too! I would like to try more of their items next time.

Yelp
Great service, interesting drinks, and a cool vibe inside! Each room has a different theme. Plenty of real vegan options too. They have specialty vegan signature rolls on top of the normal avocado/ veggies rolls typical for sushi.

Yelp
This place is on my way home from Dana Farber to Somerville so I stop. Menu is huge. Ambience is great with koi pond and granite pagodas and snow monkey pond seats. Booths have rice paper & teak partitions. Sunken rooms are available with sliding doors. Service is good. Food is excellent. Choice is huge. I especially like the make-your-own (broth, noodles, topping) Japanese Pho.

Yelp
Came here on saturday night with some friends. It was busy but the food came out quickly! We were also in the private rooms that gave us an intimate setting. I really enjoyed the sushi and the drinks. Highly recommend here for some good sushi!

Yelp
Good quality food and the sushi is very fresh compared to most. The ambiance is nice. We sat in a booth with closing partitions which is pretty neat. The service is attentive and professional.

Yelp
Great food and good setting. Some of the fatty tuna was a bit tough. A tad disappointing considering the price point. The rest of the meal was delicious though. I've enjoyed the sushi here for years and would still recommend!

Yelp
TLDR: Good semi-overpriced food. I felt like we were being scammed by their service, unintentionally or intentionally. I booked a room for 5 people this past Sunday. Note that you have to make a minimum purchase of $75 PER PERSON if you want to book the room. So for us, our min purchase was $375. When we arrived on time, we had to wait 5-10 minutes before being seated. The room seated max 6 people with sliding doors to filter out noise. The lamp at the top had a lot of collected dust hanging, so I was worried it might fall onto the food. Not sure if it did, not going to think too much into that. We ordered a Fugakyu boat, sushi, and makimomo's. The sashimi was pretty good, though I question the price for some of the food. Halfway into eating the food that was brought out, we realized they never gave us one of our makimomo's, so we had to ask them for it. They said they forgot about it, but it was fine since it's just one order that they overlooked..for now. When we realized we didn't order enough food to meet that minimum requirement, we ordered more sashimi and sushi, with a beef teriyaki and 2 orders of karaage chicken for takeout. They brought out our takeout 15 minutes before we left. After we left, we realized they didn't give us our 2 orders of karaage chicken. We checked the receipt and we did in fact paid for them too. By then it was 15 minutes before they were closing. We called them and they asked us if we could come back before they closed. Thankfully we were close by. If we weren't, they would've cheated $26 from us because they forgot, or "forgot".. It might be worth trying without booking the room so you have more flexibility in terms of how much sushi you want to eat. This isn't how a customer should feel like, but I recommend making sure the food you ordered is there in case they forget, or "forget".

Yelp
I've never had bad fish at a sushi restaurant until I came here 2 weeks ago for lunch with my family. Going to a fancy sushi place and getting fishy smelling yellowtail and mealy and maybe still frozen ahi served to you in your sashimi lunch special was really not okay with me. It's raw fish and has to be fresh to be served raw. It was NOT fresh or acceptable sushi grade fish. This isn't a dining experience we'd never ever consider again.

Yelp
Food: Got a gift card here as a present, and literally hands down BEST GIFT EVER RECEIVED. EVERYTHING was DELICIOUS, all of their sashimi, sushi, ramen, dessert, came here with like 8 friends and we ordered a ton (even after the gift card didn't cover, because we split it and it was soooo good). ZERO complaints, everything was DELICIOUS, great portion size and good variety of food to split. Ambiance: We did the traditional Japanese sitting and sat on the floor - quite a vibe. We also came for dinner which was fun! Location: Omg I LOVE Brookline - it's in such a cute, fun, T-accessible location. Always passed this location when I went to Trader Joe's, it's a quick walk/T-ride to Fenway if you want to do a fun activity like Red Sox game, Lucky Strike or get drinks somewhere after, or go to the movies... or if you're like me and want to go to Trader Joe's. Seriously, stop by this place for some BOMB, AMAZING, Japanese food!
