16 Essential Japanese Restaurants in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"This West Bank favorite caters to families and groups with chef-led hibachi meals and plenty of crowd interaction. Fuji Hana offers hot noodles and rice bowls along with hibachi meals that range from steak and lobster to chicken, fish and veggies. Dinner includes a show around 14 hibachi grill stations. You can skip the action and sit at a regular table if you like, too." - Beth D’Addono

Great Service!! It was my birthday and they sang to me twice, once with a cool, different rhythm. This was probably the best sushi I've ever had.

Rachel Shapiro

Google
My kids love hibachi and begged me to take him here even though it was a bit far from uptown New Orleans. It was worth the drive. The chef was really entertaining, the food was delicious and I am REALLY appreciate that they have a very reasonable price for kids under 10 (which is all three of mine) We were totally stuffed and took home leftovers. A meal that all three of them will eat and sit in their seats for the whole meal? Win!

Went for a birthday dinner and had an amazing time! Filet hibachi was the best I have ever had! It was so tender and flavorful. We will definitely return

Google
So we had our monthly lunch there however this time we were very disappointed with the place & service we didn't receive. We asked for a booth but even though we saw empty booths we were told there was none available. Ok we need to sit in a different spot - have a different server. So the server came over and asked for our drink order - We got what we asked for - he then took our lunch order. It was not a difficult order. We received our soup thankfully it had a spoon with it. The salad came with the soup but sadly no silverware. Then it took nearly 10 minutes to get his attention and him telling us "I didn't forget!" and that was in a very very mean tone of voice. What seemed like 5 minutes later we got our silverware. After that we were never checked on again. Never was asked if our lunch was OK If we needed more drinks which we did. We looked for our server to get our check and finally another server got it for us. We paid our bill and were very disappointed in the service. The food was good and the atmosphere for a restaurant was OK. I hope the management will see this and correct it. As most generally we love this place.

Google
I have never been here, came in for Sushi. Sat at the bar with Nabil and he was wonderful!! Hes very knowledgable, professional, and a very quick multi tasker. The sushi was delicious! They also have over 14 hibachi tables! Highly recommend.

Google
My daughter suggested we go here yesterday. She's been before, but this was my first time. I must say, the food was delicious. I decided to get the The "King of the Ocean" roll and a side of noodles; It was on point! My daughter couldn't stop eating my sushi. It had to be good because she is a very picky eater who doesn't eat sushi at all. She had the shrimp hibachi and side of fried rice. Food service was quick as well. Do note, it was quite cold outside and inside the restaurant as well. So if you're a bit cold natured, bring a jacket if you're not sitting at the hibachi table area.

We come here often and usually the food is excellent and the cooks are fun to watch. We arrived on a Thursday night before 5pm. This is the first time that we had this Cook. He was a small guy and appeared rattled. Somebody needs to take him back and teach him a remedial course in how to cook. First of all I've never had anybody put as much teriyaki sauce on everything as he did. I don't even like teriyaki sauce. He then proceeded to make the rice, which everyone at a table of eight had ordered, and only added three eggs for eight people. He then proceeded to add 2 tbsp of garlic and once again too much teriyaki sauce. He didn't mix it up enough so that when he served it, it had big balls of white rice. My husband and I both ordered filets which were supposed to be cooked medium rare which ended up being rare and he cut it into pieces that were way too big. Again he used about 2 tbsp of garlic for two filets. I had to ask for a knife to cut my filet into bite size pieces and I had to remove the garlic from my plate because it was overwhelming. We had to ask for yum yum sauce and soy sauce because he never asked anybody if they wanted it before serving our meals. He had started preparing the vegetables at the beginning of his cooking. They were almost exclusively broccoli very little zucchini etc again he added an overwhelming amount of garlic. Where he had cooked them they did not get enough heat to cook them thru so they were not hot and way too raw. Basically it was not a good meal and I paid $100 for it. I blame the restaurant management because obviously this young man had not been given enough instruction on how to cook on the hibachi. My husband and I live in uptown New Orleans and it was a long way to drive in traffic to have a mediocre meal

Google
I love this establishment. I come at least once a week. It’s affordable, I go during the daytime to catch the hibachi lunch special. I always get the shrimp, noodles, and fried rice. They have the BEST fried calamari as well.

Yelp
Came here for my friend's daughter's birthday and won't go anywhere else for hibachi. The filet mignon hibachi is to die for. So tender, so juicy and loaded with flavor. Noodle, rice and veggies were delicious too but man the steak!!!! Service is great and the restaurant is clean.
google avatar

Tanisha W.

Yelp
Food was good, wait staff was helpful and the cook was entertaining. Like most hibachi restaurants it was noisy as ppl are socializing and having fun. The prices are reasonable.

Yelp
Great fast sushi, clean atmosphere. Emily was our server and she was the BEST!!! Nicest server I've experienced ever! Definitely ask for her.

Carleb J.

Yelp
Fuji Hana is the BEST hibachi in the United States, hands down. I travel a lot, BeniHana, Akira, and the countless hibachi spots I've been to have nothing on Fuji. I've been coming here for years but never wrote a review. I can't speak for the sushi, but their hibachi is top notch, especially for the lunch hour prices. Leave you stuffed and satisfied with more to take home. 10/10 every time. Their noodles fell off after covid but they changed it back to their original ones and I have 0 complaints. Service is good, keep your drinks filled, and the ambience is nice too. Everyone's friendly. Never experienced a miss yet. I'm simple, I get shrimp and scallops with a side of fried rice. It comes with vegetables, soup, salad, and noodles all under $30 during lunch special!

Ranada B.

Yelp
Visit for a birthday party. I ordered the steak and shrimp hibachi and a California roll, everything was great. However, I feel that our chef could have been a little more interactive as some of the other chefs. Overall, I would definitely go back again.
google avatar

Netra A.

Yelp
Abi was our chef for our group. We were celebrating the homies birthday and so decided hibachi was the move. We waited about 10 minutes to be seated. It was pretty busy but they were getting people in without incidence. Abi did a fantastic job of making sure I avoided food allergens. Jojo served our drinks. We had a couple frozen drinks, soda and they had Dasani bottled water. There were several other birthday parties there and they performed with pots, pans and spatulas. It was a quite entertaining and fun time. Everything was prepared to perfection and we absolutely loved our servers, the atmosphere, drinks and food.

Yelp
This place ahaha Great food. And fun hibachi. I'm only sad when I don't get hibachi and I decide to eat in. The customer service was average. I ordered two kids meals and my son and daughter did not get their ice cream and MISO soup that is included in the combo, I ask the waiter to please give us the miso soups for the kids and he told me " it doesn't not come with miso" when the menu clearly states it. I was really sad he also charged me $20 dollar tip included in the bill. Again with bad service like that is an insult to injury by not getting what I paid for . To add context it was my wife and my two kids a party of 4. Again was very disappointed with service here.

Yelp
Great food, great service, just a nice restaurant over all. This words are only typed to get the 85 characters needed to post a review

Yelp
I come here often for hibachi inside or sushi rolls to go. I don't love sitting inside because the place isn't very well kept up in terms of cleanliness and there has been a time or two that we've had to ask for our plates or silverware to be swapped out with another because they weren't totally clean. Our family loves the hibachi show and it's a good place to go with a large group since you can get so many different items. The show is pretty decent and the food from the hibachi side is often tasty as well. They've put up plastic dividers over chairs to keep the parties separate but if you're the one sitting next to that divider, you can tell that it's not cleaned very often (if at all). I do like their sushi rolls and I love trying new ones here and there but we try to do take out as often as we can because I think they could do a lot better with cleaning up the place especially since covid started. It also helps that their special rolls have pictures for each of them on the menu. I'm such a visual person with sushi rolls that I love this feature.

Blydon D.

Yelp
Everything was good the steak was good, the service was kind, and the place was fancy

Hugh J.

Yelp
You literally have to ask for extra seasoning now to get any seasoning at all and it's been like that for the past couple years now. If you don't ask the won't season it at all. The noodles come with an add on for free. A big puddle of oil in the to-go box!
google avatar

Toni C.

Yelp
Always has the most delicious and flavorful hibachi menu. The kimchi taste is not my style , but I've lived in Korea for the past few years so I'm sure it's not gonna be as authentic tasting haha. Ambience and vibe is always great! 10/10 recommend the hibachi! PS: you MUST get the fried ice-cream for dessert!

Demi S.

Yelp
Food is absolutely amazing !!! Soup is soo good ! The service is great and the performances are even better
google avatar

Yelp
Average sushi, which is expected in this area. I like going i this place because it is close to my house. Service is quick and friendly. However, I was not a huge fan of their tuna though . Most of their slices were really thin.
google avatar

Munchi N.

Yelp
I have always passed this place while driving and of course never been. A friend got me into eating sushi, and she told me to try this place. If I could be in there every single day,I would!!!!! LOVE THIS PLACE AND LOVE THE FOOD PICK UP APP!!!!!

Yelp
1/5/20 Came here for dinner, ordered the Godzilla roll and vegetable fried rice. Everything was fresh and made to order. The staff was friendly and accommodating. My phone died right when I got my sushi roll so no photo of it, but it looked and tasted delicious. Will most definitely return here again if ever in the area.

David C.

Yelp
Phenomenal food, service, and atmosphere! Will definitely be back soon. If you have kids definitely bring them here they will have a blast.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing service and sushi! The filet mignon roll was possibly the best sushi I've ever had

Lucifer E.

Yelp
The atmosphere is dope, the service is welcoming, and the food is bussin. I highly recommend if you are high!

Yelp
It's raining Parking lot is a good size Place looks nice They are busy busy The fan vent by the hibachi is very loud and humming but it is working The carpet looks like it needs to be vacuumed We are 9 people 3 family groups Everyone is having fun Lots of smiles The chef is pretty showy and talented He has good aim Most everyone was able to catch the flying shrimp into their mouth Pretty impressive I ordered just salmon and vegetables no rice and no noodles I was pleased that they accommodated me One of the other customers just wanted broccoli for his vegetable and they accommodated him as well The serving was a lot for me to eat all at once for dinner so I took the rest home for lunch tomorrow Very nice evening
google avatar

Darkskin B.

Yelp
Beware that the "specialty rolls" are significantly smaller but the price is the same!

Dj B.

Yelp
This place is very greedy and money hungry. In order to place a kids meal to go now you must either order a special roll or an entree just to order a kids meal. Why is it any of their business what you order when you're not dining in? This is especially complicated for people who have medical reasons why they can't even finish a full adult meal such as Gastric Bypass surgeries. They need to be more accommodating to their loyal customers who have medical conditions instead of making loyal customers overpay for food they cannot physically eat. It's really sickening that a place can be so greedy and selfish instead of being considerate to those with medical conditions. Truly sad and disappointing. For educational purposes (if you even care since only money talks) As you can see a "new" stomach/pouch is created during this surgery. It's about the size of a small apple. People with these life changing surgeries cannot physically eat more than a kid's meal let alone even finish a kid's meal. Please do better, it's not right to punish your loyal customers for their medical history and health. I don't think I can support a business who does not care about their loyal customers.

Slim T.

Yelp
Awesome experience! They food was great! They didn't drown the food in teriyaki sauce. The servings were plentiful and the vibes were high!!

khawlah a.

Yelp
Always have fresh sushi and love their hibachi it's worth going too. My favorite is the dragon roll.
google avatar

Noaf B.

Yelp
I'm so glad this place is open during COVID times this was the only sushi place I can reach on phone for an order and the order was amazing! I would 10/10 recommend getting the filet mignon roll! I can't find anywhere else in the city with this amazing roll!

Yelp
3 stars because this isn't a food review.* Fuji Hana is a gem that's been on the Westbank for quite some time now. If you grew up around here, you should know about this place. It's very much known for its hibachi experience. I typically don't come here often, at all really even though I live in close proximity because there are better restaurants out there. However, because they've been around for so long, they must be doing something right. I was really craving sushi one night and called every sushi restaurant close by to see when they close. I called Fuji Hana earlier and they told me that they close at their usual time, 11PM on a Friday night. I called 3x and a man on the phone picked up and then hung up all 3x before I even got a word in. I told my sister to try again on her phone as it could be something wrong with mine. She called. He picked up, and said that they were closed and hung up again. If a restaurant is closed (it was like 10:20, why would they be picking up the phone 20 minutes later, assuming they closed @10). This establishment really needs to change their customer service.

Yelp
Fuji Hana is literally one of the best if not the best hibachi Resturant in New Orleans. We're almost always pleased when we eat here. Great food great customer service good atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Preface: This used to be my favorite sushi / hibachi place on the westbank. We'd order to go all the time and when we did go for dine in, it was top notch. Went in today for lunch (early, around 11:30) with some friends and we sat at a booth. The plastic dividers are filthy, the walls were dirty by our booth, and one friend said the restroom was terrible. Waitress was attentive and polite, but the food was awful. We each ordered hibachi: comes with soup, salad (we skipped and got double soup), veggies, noodles and meat, they got some crunchy rolls, and we added on some gyoza and fried rice. The soup was okay, the veggies were burnt, the noodles and rice had zero flavor. My chicken was decently seasoned, but dry. Their steak was cooked properly, but had no flavor. I think they're going through a management or staffing / kitchen change because what we received today was absolutely not what we're used to. I'm now on the hunt for a new sushi / hibachi place on the westbank :/ It's unfortunate. Hopefully whatever learning curve they're going through they can figure it out and get back on track.

Yelp
Came at the best time! 5p when they just opened up for dinner to beat the crowd. It looks like others had the same thing on your mind. When it was our turn to get seated, there weren't any more booth seats. When this place original opened, it only had 6 hibachi tables. Now they have double that! I'm not the biggest fan of hibachi so this review is not going to be based on that. We ordered the sunflower appetizer, beef tataki, seafood Yaki kimchi udon (comes with a soup and salad), filet mignon roll, and the Vincent roll. 1)The sunflower app was okay. It's a tower of wonton chips with snowcrab meat and sashimi surrounded by spring mix and cucumbers. 2)Their beef tataki was one of the better ones I have eaten. Slightly seared in a pool soysauce and srirachi. 3)Seafood Yaki Kimchi Udon was surprisingly good. I'm familiar with the kimchi yaki udon at Daiwa and this one actually uses kimchi in their mix which isn't a bad thing. It came with your choice of soup (we got the misu) and salad (overly dressed). 4)Filet Mignon Roll was the highlight of the night. The filet was very tender and didn't make it feel like beef at all. Tastes like it had tangy soy sauce over it similar to ponzu. Highly recommended. 5)Vincent Roll reminded me of a another roll I like from somewhere else but it wasn't up to par. The fish was albacore and it was torched giving it texture and a char flavor. Our server(s) took care of us. Every time we needed a refill or a plate taken, they were right there. I had a great experience here and would recommend it to anyone.

Yelp
This post isn't to bash the place but to maybe get in the right hands to maybe change for the better. This place is hands down dirty. The upkeep is terrible, the management team should be ashamed of how much this place lacks cleanliness. The dirty booths, the wall paper having a ton of food stains, you can just tell there is no deep cleaning, it's just simple wipe the tables and sweep the floors. Now with that being said imagine what you can't see. Food: hibachi when sitting at tables or booths food always comes out cold, portions are better than sitting at the hibachi table because you don't have to feed 8+ people off a tray. But the food was cold, veggies were hard and cold, noodles soggy, roach in the clear soup that looked like fried onion crisp, nope it was a roach. Ginger salad lettuce was dirty not even washed, that's horrible lettuce must be washed. Look it up! Back to the roach my waiter literally just said "we'll do you want another soup? " Like wow but I don't want to focus on the roach lol. Service is always rough, takes forever for refills, they never ask "how is the food? "No real relations with customers when it comes to the service. Cooks The hibachi cooks are entertaining I will say that! Sushi chefs are good! Food isn't the problem here Team leaders: The amount of money you spend at this place for the sub par customer service and simple hibachi food is wild. The real reason this place is really still afloat is because it's the only hibachi on the West Bank. I truly hope management reads this post and changes for the better. Especially during the times of Covid where we should be cleaning more than normal.

Jaclyn A.

Yelp
We ordered takeout from the restaurant and the squid was burnt, the rice made my mom sick, the noodles were overly oily, and they forgot a part of our order. I wouldn't be leaving this review if the manager didn't have a complete lack of customer service in person after we were told that we had to literally drive the food back to the restaurant to get any kind of compensation. The nice gentlemen at the front desk apologized but the manager barely spoke and did not offer any apology. He almost acted as if I wasn't there. I don't intend to eat here again anytime soon. What used to be a quality restaurant has most definitely changed for the worse.

Yelp
Was really exited to introduced hibachi to my 8 year old and his friend because it was all their first time. This restaurant give me a feeling of it is not kid friendly and the show was a disappointment for me I am not from the area I been to so many hibachi show at New England this one is so disappointing. The show was not entertaining and the food was so salty I was so thirsty after I left there horrible
google avatar

Ashley V.

Yelp
I love the food so much it taste amazing and it's one of mine favorite places to go eat it's lil Pricey but to me it's worth it
google avatar

Lindsey P.

Yelp
Found my new place to get my sushi fix whenever I'm in town. Our server was super sweet and everything came quick. Hoping to try the hibachi next time I'm in town! Everything tasted wonderful
google avatar

Gracelyn N.

Yelp
The best Sushi and Eel Handroll in the New Orleans area. The sashimi was full of flavor and tender. The Po-boy roll is my favorite, it includes a New Orleans' favorite - crawfish!! Highest recommendations. Incredible service, and delicious food. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I usually go to Fuji Hana for the Hibachi and in all honesty, have never really tried the sushi, so this review is mainly for the Hibachi. Fuji Hana is my go to spot to get some good Hibachi in the city. They chefs are always playful and professional which gets all of the guests entertained. My son loves the noodles and chicken which never disappoints with flavor. I always recommend the filet mignon as the meat is always, very tender and juicy if cooked med-rare, but medium is also fine. The shrimp and scallops are also very well seasoned each time. Depending on who may order the shrimp, the chef may give you a piece of shrimp on your plate once he has served the person that ordered. We have been to Fuji Hana many times as long as they've been open and they have kept their consistency with the hibachi. Be aware that you will come out smelling so good, you'd want to eat yourself, but that would never happen because you will most likely walk out full!
google avatar

Brianna E.

Yelp
I cannot describe how awful was my experience at this place; I've been coming to this place for two years, I always ordered the same, their sushi was so good and everything fresh but the last time I ordered to go was very disappointing, i Found a disgusting black stuff in my last two pieces of sushi, I ate one had a bad taste, didn't know what it was.
google avatar

Matt R.

Yelp
Shout out to Fujihana for not only having no seasoning in my hibachi but also my filet & sushi. Who the hell is the chef tonight? They need to be fired seriously.
google avatar

Terri Z.

Yelp
If you want hibachi this is the place to go on the westbank! I get the steak and it's delicious! Side salad are yummy & add the fried rice! You won't be able to breath after. I prefer going at lunch because it's more than enough food but half the price of dinner. Dinner is kind of pricey but food is amazing so if you can afford it go check it out! The hibachi workers are funny and great at what they do! Bring your little ones, they will love it.
google avatar

Camille A.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE FujiHana. I have been to the hibachi side more than 5 times and its simply delicious. The fried rice, the noodles, vegetables, filet mignon, shrimp, lobster, and chicken are delicious. They consistently strain them well and I've never had a bad experience here. I also live the gyoza and various rolls they offer. One day I'll put my desire for entertainment aside and just order from the kitchen lol then I'll be able to review the other items they offer. The space is clean and always packed, no matter what day you come. And its always a really good mix of people (old, young, families, couples, diverse ethnic backgrounds). You MUST try this place. Its literally the best hibachi in the 504. Periodt!
google avatar

Teira R.

Yelp
Wanted to go here here is bad and the experience was less than mediocre. The waitress didn't understand English and messed up our order and tried to add additional stuff to it. The cuts of meat and seafood is cheap but they charge high for it and give you tiny pieces. Not to mention the hibachi chef did not entertain our table but we saw all the other tables being entertained. I've been to other hibachi restaurants and saw the same fun games with the sale and pieces of food played at other tables but not ours. The chef just said good night after cooking and left. I will never go back.
google avatar

Jinyoung P.

Yelp
L said this was her favorite place for hibachi, so we went to grab some dinner before going to see Rogue One a couple of weeks ago. I got the tuna and scallops, L snapper and scallops, and her son shrimp. My hopes for the tuna were probably too high. After all, this was a $23 meal. I asked for the tuna to be seared, and while the middle of each piece was still pink, I felt that it was overcooked. But like I said, maybe I should have considered the fact that the tuna would not be the highest quality, given the price. The scallops were delicious, as were the vegetables and the noodles. The chef gave L and me a shrimp each, and boy, was the shrimp plump and perfectly cooked. As soon as I put that shrimp in my mouth, I regretted not getting shrimp and scallops, so hard. Our chef was funny but he didn't make any ignorant Asian jokes. Maybe because I was at the table? This has happened before at other hibachi places though, so I appreciated the lack of cliche, stereotype-perpetuating, dumb Asian jokes. Very much. I enjoyed my meal and I know for my next visit that I need to order shrimp.
google avatar

Yelp
They really good and I never leave unsatisfied! Whether doing hibachi or regular food you still always gets a plate full of deliciousness!
google avatar

Laura J.

Yelp
We always have a great time at Fuji Hana. The food is always fresh and delicious. My favorite speciality roll is the Filet Mignon roll. I usually always order the dinner hibachi. They have great lunch prices, I'm just never able to make it in during that time. Service is always quick, even on a busy night.

Yelp
Good food. Only downfall was a lady at our table complaining about everything. From the onions in her vegetables to the cook giving HER 3 year old some of her food. Anyone who has been here knows how much food you get, but she thought they cheated her food.

Nylah H.

Yelp
The fire and everything was nice the creativity was there but the food was not giving gourmet. I paid 26 dollars fa the pic bellow that was my plate . THUMBS DOWN . would not recommend. Rate 5/10‍.

Maureen G.

Yelp
1st off, the hibachi stations were closed. We were sat in a booth and they were not busy at all. The service was horrible! Server only came by 1 time to check on us. We ordered 2 filet hibachi dinners and HOW DISAPPOINTING! For $18 there was literally 7 bites of steak. We also ordered sushi that came AFTER we were finished our meal. Not impressed and a waste of my money. So much for a nice birthday lunch for my son.

Patricia K.

Yelp
Girls night out with 7 friends. Service was very poor although area was not crowded. Drinks arrived with little to no alcohol. Asked server to ask the bartender to either remake or add alcohol, her response was that everyone would have to purchase another drink. An hour later, we ordered our food. Half of the orders came out. We asked to speak to the manager who assured us that she would take care of our order. An hour later, 1 additional order came out (the group who were served prior had finished eating), although mine and another never did. I walked out; after being there 2.5 hours. In the time we were there, another table came in, ordered, ate, paid and left and I still did not have my food. What shoudl have been an enjoyable evening, left me very angry. I will never patronize this business again.

Yelp
Good food and good service! Family oriented restaurant that caters to your hunger needs. No complaints at all about this place.
