Beat the Heat with These 11 Charleston Happy Hours | Eater Carolinas

"The fourth installment of Fuji Charleston opened up on Upper King Street last August, offering the downtown crowd reasonably priced sushi and hibachi. Look for an expansive happy hour featuring $2 Bud Light and $7 cocktails along with sushi rolls, gyoza, steak tataki, and more." - Parker Milner

Came in yesterday around lunch with family and our server, Jester, was amazing — super patient, kind, and very accommodating. Five stars to him! The food was okay. I ordered from the lunch menu and got the eel and avocado roll, which was mostly avocado with barely any eel. Also tried the spicy tuna roll, but the minced tuna made it too mushy for my taste — would’ve preferred a whole fillet. Overall, I had a good experience thanks to the service, but they definitely need to improve portion quality/quantity

Google
Great spot with super tasty sushi! The fish is fresh and the roll combinations are fantastic. We tried the September, Fantastic Seaweed, Lobster, and Yellowtail with scallion rolls — absolutely delicious!

Bao Buns were great. But I wouldn't order the short rub ones again. Sushi was good. Udon noodles were mids. The chicken in it was good. But the rest wasn't stir fried as much as I hoped

Google
A great sushi place with a nice and cozy atmosphere. The staff is really nice and friendly. The sushi is fresh, with the sashimi melting in your mouth, and it didn’t take too long for the sushi to come. The only thing is that the rolls appeared to be hastily made. Everything else is good.

This was immediately adjacent to our hotel, so it was a slam dunk. We arrived at 6 pm and were seated immediately. Our drink orders were quickly taken. I ordered the Dragon and the Surf and Turf rolls. My wife ordered the incredible King Hibachi. Everything came out in a reasonable time. The Dragon roll was very good, the Surf and Turf, while different was just okay. My wife's hibachi meal was absolutely great, chicken, steak, shrimp, and lobster! Wow! The staff were all terrific and took very good care of us. No disappointments! Enjoy.

Me and my family were in town on a work trip and last minute found this place and Isabelle our server was worthy of more than 5 stars. Timely and attentive, fun conversater, and the kids loved her! The Joji roll was also incredible will definitely be revisiting Charleston just for this place!

I’m a honest reviewer…. You can look at my history…. Our waiter Josh was amazing!!! 💕So we lived in Japan for three years sushi is always will be my first love…. So I ordered the love boat for two… (for me only) ps it was not served on a boat as I thought it would be. (The name) so I requested Nigiri and Sashimi mixed , Josh I don’t do spicy stuff period no wasabi please extra ginger. (dietary restrictions) I received all Nigiri and a small a 4 piece tuna roll and it was very riced up compared to the sushi. It def did not fill me up even with my miso soup.. so I ordered the tuna martini appetizer asked specifically not spicy 🥵 and It was … so it was not my best experience will I go back not sure we will see. Management didn’t come over. Poor Josh but hands down he was amazing… Great ambience Great location Great service Military honored I should have gotten the regular rolls loll they looked amazing going to other tables..

Second time at Fuji before a night out in Downtown Charleston. The sushi was very fresh. I loved the unique textures of the Fantastic Seaweed Roll. Our dragon roll and tuna rolls were as expected with no complaints. The shumai unfortunately lacked a depth of flavor however they were steamed perfectly. Arriving at the tail end of the prime dinner window (8:30pm), our hostess got us to our seat quickly. Our waitress was friendly and had no hiccups with the order. The ambiance of Fuji is always nice and laid back. Low lighting with a nice fusion of a sushi kitchen and a puby/divey warmth sits swirly between the upscale elegance and history of downtown Charleston.

Yelp
Chris behind the bar was awesome!! This is one of the best hibachi meals I've had making it one of my favorites in Charleston. Everything came out so quickly, the service was 10/10.

Yelp
Food: We ordered the Shumai, the fantastic seaweed roll, the dragon roll, and the tuna roll. The Shumai was okay. The sushi was very fresh and came out very quickly. We were in a bit of a rush so we ordered within minutes of sitting down and had our appetizer within 10 minutes and our rolls within 20 minutes. Service: the server was great! She was super nice and brought our food to us promptly even tho we were sitting upstairs. Ambiance: This is a very cute dinner spot, it's has a modern Japandi interior decor mixture. If you sit upstairs and don't mind there will be hip hop and other types of music coming from the next door club "uptown social". My fiancé and I didn't mind at all! Great place to get good food and catch a quick vibe.

Yelp
Fuji Sushi is fine. I sat at the bar on a weeknight and looking for a hook to hang my purse I instead found multiple gum wads stuck to the underside. That was gross. The ambiance is chill with no one in very much of a hurry. The staff spoke of various college courses they were taking, the patrons appeared to mostly not care. The rolls were forgettable and the nigiri was average. Honestly, it gave more dive bar vibes than sushi bar vibes. The cocktails were ok. Everyone was nice. It just was largely meh.
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
It's an attractive restaurant. They have lots of help and everybody's in motion. The vibe of the place is more hipster. They certainly have an emphasis on the liquor bar. I found their sushi selection rather small. If you're a person who likes to get an occasional salmon-skin hand roll you're not gonna find it here. I had the sushi sampler and my wife had the ramen. Both dishes were absolutely superb. Service was OK but not exceptional. The prices were rather high.

Yelp
If you have a taste for sushi you've found the right place. From the happy hour to the decor - this is always one of my favorite choices downtown. I love the miso soup and you can't go wrong with the spicy salmon roll. I highly recommend the Charleston sunset roll. If you're not sure what those order, the servers are always knowledgeable!

Yelp
Ate here on a Thursday for dinner. We sat on the rooftop and it was gorgeous! Definitely go to the roof patio if it's open. The server was new but VERY attentive, he went and asked someone when he couldn't answer my question! We ordered a few rolls and the chirashi platter. Everything was delicious and great presentation! I didn't expect tamago or tako at a place like this and was pleasantly surprised! Fresh fish and good flavors, with servers who really care about your experience

Yelp
Pretty good rolls and very decent prices. II had some pretty awful poke down the street, so I needed something to save the day and stumbled on this place. I did their three roll lunch special for 20 bucks, and it was worth the money. The spicy tuna roll wasn't spicy, but it was good. The Hamachi roll was tasty. The salmon roll was also good. No complaints, and the interior was cool. It was not the most spectacular service, but I didn't need anything fancy.

Yelp
Now this is a story all about how my birthday dinner got flipped turn upside down so I'd like to take a minute just sit right there and I'll tell ya how Fuji became the worst place aside from Hell. My loving boyfriend called to make reservations for my birthday and was told that they were not accepting reservations and seating was limited. We invited my sisters who live a couple hours away to have dinner since there wouldn't be a big bash this year. Always the worrywart, he called the day prior to make sure nothing had changed and was told no reservations still. And again, two hours before we were to meet downtown. Without a reservation we expected a wait but at least we'd be downtown Charleston. We arrived with 3 of 6 people in the party. They would not seat us and asked us to wait outside. We walked the block as traffic and parking got the best of them. After about 30 minutes, I couldn't continue on my ankle and went back in to ask about seating without them then moving together. They seated us and we ordered appetizers. Another group of young white college aged students came in and were seated next to us. They added extra chairs and silverware for the missing people. WHAT?! I was super upset that they sent a disabled vet walking downtown Charleston and made the same request happen at a drop of a dime for another group. Our server was very lax, it took forever to get food and getting anything we requested was impossible. The rest of the party just ordered and met us at the house for the rest of celebration.

Yelp
We ordered the Sweet Boat (Sashimi) and 6 different rolls for a party of 6 and it was the perfect amount of food. The fish is very fresh and the rolls were on point. We also ordered the tempura appetizer and the tempura were fried super light and crispy. Service was great and the rolls were made fast.

Yelp
I came by for lunch and this is some of the best sushi I've had in Charleston. Freshly prepared and delicious! I got the lunch special which is an awesome deal -- you get to choose 2 or 3 rolls with choice of soup or salad. I got the spicy tuna and the yellowtail scallion rolls with a miso soup.
google avatar

Alexis B.

Yelp
Cute spot with good sushi! They have an upstairs bar so good for families, friends, singles and anyone else. It's small so big parties may not work but worth a try!

Yelp
Fantastic food ! First time dined here and really enjoyed it however when I ordered 2 bottle of veuve champagne , server brought plastic cups and he didn't allow me to taste . I asked if he has proper champagne flutes or any type of glassware he said we are not allowed to use glassware on patio . 180 2x bottle of champagne and no glassware ? Come on....

Yelp
A place we love going for birthdays, the staff is so nice and their sushi is some of our favorites! They have a wonderful happy hour.

Yelp
I don't usually go out of my way to give a 1 star review, but there is nothing worse then terrible service. The place was half empty except the bar was almost fully seated. I grabbed a seat at the bar and the bartender did say she would get with me soon. I was there for 15 minutes without a menu. She did manage to get me the wifi password and a water. At first I felt like it was slow, but at least she was checking up on me. Then two other guests showed up and another two and she continued to get drink orders from them and then continued to service them. This left me wondering why I was the only Asian person at an Asian restaurant in the South not getting waited on when people that came in after me were getting drinks and their orders put in all after I arrived. At this point I don't know if it's just "southern" hospitality, but it's not a good look either way. Service was slow and terrible with a hint of potential racism. I promptly got up and left after sitting at the bar for 15 minutes and only getting a glass of water and needing to ask to get a menu and watching people get served before me.

Yelp
Fuji is located on the upper king area of downtown next to many of the restaurants and bar in the area, which makes the location unbeatable. We visited for my birthday dinner and sat down promptly without having to wait too long even-though we did not have a reservation. The menu has a large variety of options from sushi to, ramen and udon soups , to hibachi. The drink menu has a few interesting cocktails and I tried one of their mules which was pretty good and tasty. For the main meal I ordered the ramen and it was cooked perfectly with a rich, flavorful broth and perfectly cooked noodles. The service was also excellent - the staff were friendly and attentive, and for my birthday, they even brought out a complimentary dessert for me. There is a city parking garage across from the street at the hyatt which charges the same as the meters, so it is a no brainer to park there instead of having to find street parking. The prices are fair to high , and there are a few specials during happy hour, but nothing out of the ordinary. It is a great place to visit

Yelp
5 stars for our waitress Tiffany and availability of a table last minute even if it outside a little cold. Food came in a reasonable time period. I wish we loved the food, but if I have to be truthful to how good the sushi was, it was average at best. Tried salmon, hamachi, and saba. All in all it was fine, there wasn't anything horribly wrong with it, but as someone who loves sushi, I'm looking for better than fine when in search of it. This was my first sushi in Charleston, so I am not yet able to compare to other restaurants in the city.

Yelp
Amazing sushi, ramen and service! The special rolls are huge! We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Really good and great service. We had a very large group and they were very accommodating. The sushi was so good and fresh! Would recommend for sure!!
google avatar

Alisa W.

Yelp
This was a great unexpected find thanks to Yelp! The ramen noodle bowl with steak was incredible. It has a kick to it so if you don't like spicy I might choose something else. Also, the steak cooks in the broth so I'd recommend getting it slightly less cooked then you would normally. The broth was so unique & bursting with flavor. We also got the shumai & edamame appetizer. This place did not disappoint! Good serve, nice ambiance, & excellent food!
google avatar

Jasmin G.

Yelp
Great spot for sushi and drinks. The menu is extensive - there were also other options like hibachi and noodles! We got a combo of sushi, sashimi, and hibachi items. All of the sushi was delicious and super fresh. The hibachi was good too, but the sushi really stood out to us. We also got some yummy cocktails which were strong and fresh! We tried the hot sake first and couldn't do it; our waitress very kindly accommodated us and took it off our bill. The vibe of the place is comfortable and relaxed. It can also accommodate groups easily which is a plus!
google avatar

Gabriel Alexander H.

Yelp
Got the big ass sweet boat and it was delicious. Our bartender Kyle was getting mistreated by the hostess and still managed to deliver excellent service with haste! We finished the night with the spicy tuna wantons and they were real yummy, crispy and such. Ambiance was fine nothing fancy, and all the cups and the bar were plastic with is pretty tacky but whatever. Bourbon costs were really low so that's nice. Thanks again to Kyle, brotha needs a raise.
google avatar

Craig D.

Yelp
The service is chaotic and the food was average at best with some highlights. The chaos with 4 door dash drivers trying to pick up late orders should have been the indicator to rethink our decision. However, our daughter liked the location and sushi. Felt bad for the host at front juggling orders and seating people. Was seated on the rooftop deck where the competing music from two nearby clubs and the restaurant made for an indistinguishable cacophony of sound. The tables didn't have any lighting. A cheerful waitress stopped by and left 8 oz plastic waters and took our drink orders. She returned with a large can of Sapporo beer and a Chardonnay in a flimsy plastic cup. She quickly left before being able to put an appetizer order in. We ordered miso soup that didn't come out first as in most Japanese restaurants. It came 30 minutes after ordering with our main course. It was cold and to their credit proactively removed from our bill. The appetizers included the worst Gyoza we have ever had... cold and tough doey. First time in family history there wasn't a competition for the last one. Edamame was fine. Appetizer plates were prison grade and the chopsticks were children size. When dinner came, I had to go to get more plates and table settings. Still gave a 20% tip because I felt bad for the undertrained waitress. The mixed drink in a 8 ounce plastic cup used in dentist offices to rinse your mouth just wasn't good. The Christmas roll was tasty (they gave us 2 by accident) and the rest of the sushi was ok. 2 stars may even be generous. I hope the feedback is a wake up call, but I doubt this was an anomaly.

Yelp
My husband took my parents when they were in town and couldn't stop talking about it when they got back, so we had to go again. The sushi was just as good as the ones we're used to in San Diego, and the prices were reasonable. The staff is friendly and got us drinks while we waited for our seat. The space is smaller downstairs, but it was cozy. We've also never really had an issue finding parking I. The street, but I think there's a garage close by if needed.

Gray W.

Yelp
Had the best experience ever. I had Zack as my bartender and he is the best. So cool and fun to talk to. The food is fantastic and it has such a great atmosphere. Can't wait to come back and hang with Zack!
google avatar

Olivia Kay W.

Yelp
Great place to bring the family for Mothers Day. My dad ordered two rolls, one fried and sweet and one spicy and raw. Both were super delicious and very fresh. My mom ordered the shrimp and salmon hibachi and the salmon was cooked PERFECTLY. The don bowl I ordered was also incredibly fresh and was in my opinion, the best of the three meals. Service was quick and our server did a great job keeping out drinks full, which is quite a task with my southern father and his sweet teas. Overall, it was a 10/10 experience for us!
google avatar

Carlos Q.

Yelp
Terrible service went to have dinner and nobody really care we were told that kitchen will be closing early we placed our order to go, and the hostess told us to seat on the bar and when we sat to wait no water was offered or anything, after 20 minutes the girl behind the bar told us they already did last call but was other couple on the. At and they were served several times after she told us that, the guy with the blue shirt don't know if he was the floor manager look at us and completely ignore us, the only person that tried to help was the host

Halley H.

Yelp
I have been to Fuji multiple times and it's always amazing but I was a little shocked when I ordered take out tonight and my Philly roll came like this. Not sure if it was on purpose but I was unable to eat the roll as normal because all of the ingredients were coming out the top and the bottom was full of white rice. This has never happened when I dine in but be mindful of getting take out if this is not your vibe. Edamame and Crunch roll were great
google avatar

Donna G.

Yelp
Nice place. We ordered combo hibachi plates. The seafood including shrimp and lobster were over cooked. I had the steak plate and was not asked how I wanted it prepared. They assumed medium and I prefer medium rare. They have potential but need to make a few tweaks...

Bruce B.

Yelp
Love the rooftop tables. Service was very friendly and helpful. Food was very tasty. Only thing was labeled spicy wasn't spicy. Nice big portion. 2 could probably share a dish with an extra side. A bit Pricey.
google avatar

Elise D.

Yelp
Fuji has a lot of great options to choose from. Whether you're looking for sushi or hibachi, there's something for everyone. Their downstairs dining area has a bar, but they also have a beautiful rooftop, so definitely check that out! Start your meal off with the Bomb Shrimp, trust me. They are perfectly fried with a sauce that is truly the bomb. I tried out the pomegranate Margarita as well and you could actually taste the tequila in it, which I appreciated. For my sushi roll, I went with the Samurai roll. It has yellowtail, salmon, cucumber and avocado topped with tuna, white tuna, jalapeños, sriracha with black and red caviar. It had a nice balance of spice as well as saltiness from the caviar. The jalapeños were sliced nice and thinly, so they didn't overpower the roll. We had a group of eight people and the service was quick and everyone enjoyed their meal!

Blake S.

Yelp
Food was good. Service was less than par, I can't fully put the blame on the wait staff as it was only two running the upstairs bar and surrounding tables. I think management needs to step in and either hire more help or train their staff to handle a full house without hurting service time. Downstairs looked amazing whereas the rooftop seemed as if it was either getting remodeled or needs to be. Maybe pass on eating here for the next month or two. High hopes for this place.

Yelp
We stopped in here to have a drink and lunch early on a Saturday, just by chance, and I'm so glad we did. We were greeted warmly by a manager and asked if we could sit at the bar. We did and our bartender, Chase, was really friendly and makes a mean Bloody Mary! Ice cold and delicious, I could've had more than my requisite "half a cocktail" if I'd been able to drink more! (We live a bit of a drive away.) Also, if you've never topped off your Bloody Mary with a shot of Guinness, you should. At first, I thought it was just an up-sell from a clever bartender...and maybe it was, but it was GOOD. Sounds crazy, but it makes the drink a bit *lighter,* if you can believe it. I had the Christmas roll - delicious. Do not miss it. The shrimp and tuna are great together with the avocado and the little pop of mango just made it that much better. My husband had the Poke Bowl and is raving about it, still. The portion was so generous, he couldn't even finish it, though he wanted to. We both enjoyed the shumai as an appetizer. It's one of my favorite bites across the board. I can't think of a time when I saw it on a menu and didn't order it. It was really good; steamed perfectly. If it was frozen, there was no hint of it. I couldn't have told you if they were house made or not. They were perfectly sweet. There are other, flashier places on that part of King, but I wouldn't miss a chance to come here again. The food is really good, the staff fantastic and the atmosphere is a little more authentic and relaxed than other places I've been to in Charleston in the last few years. Really delightful.

Yelp
This was a nice little sushi joint that surprised us. Good variety in a nice atmosphere. Definitely recommend it you want some sushi.
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
It was a Monday lunch. Location was very quiet so service was spot on. Food was great. Ambiance was tasteful.

Saverio G.

Yelp
Fuji says... "Offering delicious and authentic Japanese." I got refrigerated premade sushi with some sort of fish (not yet identified) that was older than the fridge... Udon soup... Pathetic. Udon was overcooked and tasted like a melted rubber band. But this was the good part of the soup because the rest of it was completely tasteless. The broth was from a wash out from who knows which other plate. I mean... worse than the little flavoring bag that you can get from Walmart' raman. Some artificially colored kind of artificial crab meat was floating on the plate. It looked like a fake Andy Warhol opera in a pretend to be a satanist church... It came with shrimp... Shrimp? Yeah, right. The "shrimp" were still frozen inside the batter... Costco sell them for $10 for a box of 12... Finally, as the menu says, "shrimp bomb"... Told you already about the shrimp part. The bomb? Less than a fart. This food is inedible, unpalatable, unprobeable, and an offense to anything that has the word "japanese" attached to it. Pathetic... Never again.
google avatar

Joseph S.

Yelp
They have a great hidden rooftop which we really enjoyed. Everything we ordered was delicious!
google avatar

Aubrey W.

Yelp
Very nice little sushi restaurant conveniently located on King Street. We were seated right away despite just walking in. Our server was wonderful. He was very friendly and attentive. The sushi was reasonably priced and of good quality. We are so glad we wandered in. We look forward to returning!

Gianna I.

Yelp
zack is the best bartender ever! not only is he sexy but he makes fantastic drinks and is super outgoing and nice
google avatar

Lacey G.

Yelp
I ordered from here last night and had to review because it was so fresh and so good! Charleston sushi can be hit or miss, and Fuji is now on my top 3 sushi rotation. We had the Alaska, Spicy Tuna, and Tanaka Rolls - I recommend them all. Also, their delivery comes in brown boxes instead of the usual black plastic containers with clear top, and something about that lends to a better aesthetic/experience with takeaway.
google avatar

Mia N.

Yelp
I ordered takeout from here because it was right across the street from my hotel. They did not have an option for ordering online, but it was easy enough to call and place my order. My food was ready within 5 minutes which was nice! When I came to pick up my food I had to wait probably 3-4 minutes just for someone to come to the hostess stand to ask what I was there for. The restaurant wasn't that busy, I only saw two tables occupied. The food was okay, nothing special that stands out in my mind. The miso soup was standard but it did contain a nice amount of seaweed which I appreciated. The fish on the rainbow roll did not seem particularly fresh but it definitely wasn't bad by any means. I was annoyed that they did not give me any soy sauce with my takeout. They did provide a generous amount of wasabi and pickled ginger. Overall, I felt the price was a tad high for the quality of food I received, but that may be typical of this area. I'm not familiar with the prices of other restaurants on King Street.
google avatar

Nina M.

Yelp
Had a blast on their rooftop for happy hour-- was really surprised how fresh the sushi was especially at this price point. Our waitress was attentive and we had plenty of space. We must've stayed for 2 hours and never felt rushed. Ordered a large variety off the happy hour menu and was impressed overall. I would stick with the tempura shrimp and sushi and pass on the gyoza. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Charleston
google avatar

Yvette T.

Yelp
Love this place. My friend took me here for my birthday and everything was perfect. Elainea our server was fantastic with helping us choose the best meal. Already looking forward to eating there again.
google avatar

Skyler S.

Yelp
Ordered drinks, still didn't receive them after 45 minutes. Our friend ordered hibachi & we ordered sushi. Our sushi came out & our friends hibachi never came out. Bartender was on the phone the whole time. Manager did take apps, drinks & hibachi off the bill. However, still do not recommend. Save your time & go somewhere else.
google avatar

Ara A.

Yelp
02/2021 update The sushi is still good but the service definitely needs more training. They increased the price of their lunch specials which is upsetting. Had the Patty roll this time and it was very delicious.
google avatar

Meg C.

Yelp
Not impressed and I was so excited to try this place. Their happy hour prices are great! My issue was the food and a bartender. I did get sick later on after the sushi, mind you I don't have a sensitive stomach and yes I know it was definitely the sushi. I ordered a Philly roll, which came out with no cream cheese but cucumber. Now everyone does this roll differently but this one was wrong. A bartender or owner heard us talking about it and interjected that the chefs are the best and never make mistakes. He insisted the cream cheese was in there. Well sir it wasn't. And I don't really appreciate you telling me I'm wrong when you didn't even look at my plate. It came off as a bit rude and abrasive. No thanks.
google avatar

Ki'Yona M.

Yelp
I've been here a couple times and I'm never disappointed. Unfortunately I usually go when the waits is too long at other places near by, but I know the wait is never too long here and the food will be good. You can't go wrong with the ramen! Oh and there's a great parking garage right across the street.

Desire T.

Yelp
Had a togo order, however the host didn't know anything about the menu. I asked if my sushi could be fried, however is was not. As I waited outside for my food, the host walked outside looked at me and went back in. He could've simply let me know my food was ready but didn't.

Yelp
Funky spot right in the middle of King St action. We are upstairs in the "open air" kinda outside section. For those who like rooftop dining, there is a cool outdoor seating area but it was closed (quiet and chilly weeknight). Our server was friendly and very attentive through the dinner so kudos for that. For appetizers we order the Yasai Gyoza (veg dumplings) and the Bomb Shrimp (tempura fried shrimp drizzled with a spicy bomb sauce). The Gyoza were meh - the wrapper wasn't firm, temp was lukewarm and taste was real neutral (wouldn't order them again). The Bomb shrimp were super tasty hot and would order them all day long. For dinner I had the Salmon Donburi (accompanied by oshinko, avocado, seaweed salad and served with miso soup). The salmon was super fresh and the rice held the salmon really well. I love the way the salmon was cut - you can tell a better sushi place by the way they present the salmon. The pieces were perfectly uniform and melted in my mouth. One odd note was that I had to request wasabi which came right away and was enough for a family of 10 . Would definitely recommend coming here simply based on the freshness of the sushi.

Rennie R.

Yelp
Everything tasted off tonight, both rolls and fried rice tasted off. Stopped eating because I knew I would regret it. Usually pretty good but tonight absolutely horrible.
