"Worldwide chef David Chang seemed to have the city at his fingertips in September 2019. Majordomo was a big hit in far Chinatown, his Las Vegas restaurants were gearing up to open, and his fast-casual fried chicken outlet Fuku had just arrived to Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade. While bigger plans were quickly delayed by the onset of the pandemic, it seems that Fuku is back and ready to conquer once again." - Farley Elliott

"With its plush potato roll and crunchy pickles, this Southern-style sandwich is the star at Fuku. It’s a reasonable buy at $8 and a solid deal with a drink and fries at $11. Order it as a “knockout” and the sandwich comes loaded with seasoned cabbage and a spicy mayo-like sauce." - Eater Staff

"David Chang’s highly anticipated fried chicken sandwich restaurant, Fuku, opens today at SocialEats food hall on Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade. The former Sumo Dog stall has been transformed into a sleek counter with a straightforward menu. There’s a spicy fried chicken sandwich, chicken tenders, and an off-menu cold fried chicken leg that’s as spicy as Howlin’ Ray’s hottest level. On the side are waffle fries, chili-garlic green beans, and horseradish snow peas. The Southern-style sandwich will likely be the star with its plush potato roll and crunchy pickles. It’s a reasonable buy at $8 and a solid deal with a drink and fries at $11. Order it as a “knockout” and the sandwich comes loaded with seasoned cabbage and a spicy mayo-like sauce. The tenders are good too, but the off-menu Rippin’ Hot cold fried chicken leg might steal the show with its seriously spicy profile. It’s a Santa Monica Fuku exclusive and only available by request, so put on the provided gloves and get ready to sweat. To drink, there’s a frozen strawberry lemonade, peach sweet tea, and yuzu lemonade. Fuku first opened in New York City’s East Village before expanding to three locations in the Big Apple, one in Boston, and other sports concession venues including the LA Coliseum. The fried chicken spot also popped up at Coachella the last few years to drum up social media buzz. Fuku is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily at 1315 Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica." - Matthew Kang

Came to see what the hype was all about. Went on a Sunday evening no line. We ordered both the spicy chicken dark meat chicken and the white meat chicken sandwiches with the knockout sauce. The white meat was pretty good. The dark meat was interesting and little more fatty, but add more knockout sauce and makes everything better Hahahaha. I’d give it a 6 out 10. As for the beverages, the yuzu and peach ice tea combo drink is the way to go.

Food product = 2 stars Service, Ambience, Clean Bathrooms = 4 stars All of the fried chicken items use chickpea batter. With the twice fried method of cooking, it results in a hard exterior one could describe as “crunchy” but I personally did not find it palatable. I enjoyed DC’s Momofuku Ko in NYC and have been to Majordomo in downtown LA numerous times, but not a fan of this.

David Chang’s fried chicken sandwich counter serve in the SocialEats gallery. Came here for lunch with a friend on a Wednesday around 11:45 and we’re glad we went early, as a line formed shortly after we received our orders. We both went with the dark meat spicy chicken sandwich combination. While the cashier described it as a 4/5 on the spiciness level, it was more like a 2/5. However, the taste and seasoning was certainly there - I liked how well fried it was as well. It contrasted against the soft, doughy potato roll bun. There were pickles on the side, and there are sauces in the back. Their house special Thousand Island style dressing was the best one, although I also tried the ssam style one which I found a little too salty. You have the option of making it “knockout style” for an extra dollar, although that entails them putting coleslaw and their thousand island sauce on the sandwich. Given that you can get the sauce for free and that I don’t like coleslaw, I opted out and don’t think it detracted from my meal. I really liked the waffle cut fries and there was a salty seasoning with the undertone of sweetness that complemented the chicken sandwich. I just wish there were more fries included. The combination is ~$13 and comes with a drink - you could use the regular soda machine in the back and there’s also a sweet peach tea and a yuzu lemonade you can serve yourself. I really liked the sweet tea, and if you like yuzu, you can definitely taste it in the lemonade. There’s counter seating or you can sit at the other tables in the area. Bathrooms are upstairs but you need a code. There is alcohol and happy hour from 3-7pm. Overall it was a filling lunch and certainly enjoyable - next time I may opt for the sweet menu item, which is a spicy chicken sandwich that according to the worker, is on par with Howlin Rae’s and require gloves to eat.

I came here tonight and absolutely loved it. I had the white meat fried chicken sandwich made up of two chicken fingers, and added the special sauce to it. Definitely the best fried chicken I've had in LA. The sandwich was very messy, but I think that's part of the fun.

I ordered a spicy chicken sandwich and waffle fries from Fuku. The portion sizes were very generous and both dishes were great! The fries had a sweet heat flavor and the chicken sandwich had a great sauce on it. I'll be back!

Google
The place still feels like an under-the-radar hidden gem; the line isn't bad and the tiny menu is well thought out and innovative. I really loved the side of snow peas. I ordered the off-menu top-secret super spicy cold chicken and it was 🔥! Definitely use the nitrile gloves for protection and don't get it on your lips or in your eyes. I'm still hallucinating!

Chicken was clearly frozen. For that price it should have been fresh. Took 25 min to get it and there was only 1 person before us. They were rude to the other person when they questioned wrong parts of the order. Employee just stormed off. Our order was wrong too. Employee asked if I wanted sauce, I said yes. He pulled out a clear bin with little sauce containers spilled all over each other and handed me two nasty sauces with crusty sauce dried all over the outside. Dont waste your time.

Yelp
I was sad that I missed trying Fuku when it was originally in the food hall, but glad to see that it's still here in a different version. Ordering was fairly easy: you just go to the Kitchen United MIX website and select the restaurant that you'd like to order from. They gave a pretty wide-range for the wait time (15 - 25 minutes) and it was closer to the 15 minute mark. Pick-up was easy: I walked in a told them my name. They have numerous bags read to go, but mine was the only one in the Fuku bag! The packaging was a bit annoying because they placed the bottle of water on top and it kind of crushed the box, but this is on me: I eventually rearranged things in the bag and took the beverage bottle out. Now onto the food: it was pretty good! The chicken was heavily breaded, which gave it a nice crunch. I ordered the 4-piece chicken tender meal, but they definitely threw in a few extra pieces, perhaps because they included some smaller pieces in my order, so the extra pieces compensated? I enjoyed the smaller pieces than the larger pieces of chicken. The larger pieces could be a bit dry in the middle, but the smaller pieces were just perfect in terms of crunchy breading to chicken ratio, and those pieces also seemed to retain the juiciness/moisture. The jalapeno waffle fries had a nice kick to them, although there were definitely some pieces that had way too much seasoning. It wasn't the most evenly distributed with the seasoning. I really liked the spicy mayo sauce. The breading itself doesn't have much spice or flavoring to it, so the flavor really relies heavily on the sauce. I should also note that this is *not* hot chicken. It's just regular (but pretty solid) chicken tenders. Overall, it's a quick meal, and very COVID-friendly take-out experience.

Yelp
I'm surprised this place only has a few reviews, but it could be because it's part of the Kitchen United MIX. The actual chicken sandwich tasted great, but the chicken was a bit too big for the bun for me. The waffle hash browns were good, but not any better than a normal order of fries anywhere else. I hope more people will try this place though!

Yelp
I was actually excited to try this place after hearing good things about from a friend of mine. There were many many issues in regards to eating here...Wait time, quality, and missing items. The worst part would of had to be getting served RAW chicken. Absolute disaster of a restaurant.

Deepak J.

Yelp
They're serving raw chicken!!! This is dangerous.. they need to shut down and fix this before someone gets sick!

Yelp
I've heard a bunch about this place and the chicken sando didn't disappoint! Also had the impossible nuggies and spicy chicken empanadas. Yum!
