The 15 Best Restaurants near Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama | Eater

"Inside popular outdoor shopping mall Midtown Village, this hidden gem serves ramen, donburi rice bowls, and boba milk tea. Opened in 2020, the restaurant has an airy interior, accented with light wood and Japanese memorabilia, and the service is quick. Enjoy an order of crunchy takoyaki stuffed with creamy minced octopus, before indulging in the spicy miso ramen: The thick miso-based soup is filled with tender pork belly, vegetables, a boiled egg, and red ginger for some added zing." - Jen Bowman

Google
Picked up lunch for the first time today to take to work for me and coworkers. Service was great, quick and polite. Food was ready exactly when I requested it be (I ordered 30 minutes before my pickup time, and the server who took my order made sure to tell the kitchen not to start it right away so it was fresh when I picked up) and the food was delicious. Reasonably priced for the quantity and everything was great. Will definitely be back!

The Dracos

Google
All the food was amazing! We had The tofu The steam buns Black garlic ramen Tori kaarage Wanton ramen Shrimp Ramen Eel rice dish (forgot the name) It was all cooked perfectly. Only feed back which is my preference I don't like skin on fish or eel but that is a preference not something needed. The bobas (we had three types) and tea was all amazing. Was busy eating or would have added more photos ! Staff was amazing sweet and checked on us perfectly Area was clean organized and fresh

Google
Love the Steamed Buns!! They are amazing, and the chili oil at the table is delicious!! Had the Takoyaki and the batter was undercooked and runny and the octopus was like rubber bullets, we took it home for the dog, you have been warned... Also had the Black Garlic Ramen which was very flavorful, the broth was very rich but the noodles were a little overcooked for my taste. The Cashu Don was good as well but not amazing. I would come back just for the steamed buns, they really are so good! Service is fast and the restaurant is very clean.

Google
The food/boba are amazing. I definitely would love to go back. Our waitress was so nice and helpful. The decorations were pretty cool as well. There is a great vibe. By the end of the meal I felt like I needed to be rolled out. 😂

Food was great. Had a good variety. Staff was friendly. Had a great meal with a table of 12 people

Tokyo Blues Man

Google
This place is definitely the best ramen spot we’ve been in AL so far. Then why is my review 3 stars? First of all, my review is 3 stars that’s ever so close to being 4 stars. More like 7 out of 10. Second of all, I’m sorry but it’ll take me a knockout ramen to give anyone a 5 star review on any ramen restaurants including ones I visited in Tokyo and elsewhere else in Japan. I make my own ramen from scratch I’m not saying that my ramen is the best but I’ve been making it for a while and I know little bit about ramen. This place has pretty decent ramen - I had Miso Ramen and our son had spicy Miso Ramen. Noodles had nice body (Koshi) to them and they were cooked pretty nicely (softer side of Al Dente) but had Kansui (soda) smell to them. Maybe because they were originally frozen and didn’t cook evenly? Soup had pretty good Miso flavor but lacked in strong stock flavors. Couldn’t tell if it was Torigara (chicken stock) or Tonkotsu (pork bone flavor). Or maybe, Niboshi (dried sardines). I just wish it had little more savory flavors (Umami). Aji tamago (egg) was little over cooked for my taste and didn’t have much of flavor. But Chashu (pork belly) was pretty good. We also had Gyoza which was pretty decent. I think if they can improve on those things that I mentioned, they can produce really good ramen. This place definitely has potential and I’ll be back again since it’s very close to our house.

Google
Nice little bistro with friendly, attentive staff and airy vibes. Couple of picnic tables out front, but unclear if they're full service or not. Went for lunch on a Saturday and they weren't very busy, maybe half full by the time we left around 1. Ordered the katsu curry rice bowl (which came with miso soup), steamed pork buns, and veggie gyoza. The chicken katsu in the rice bowl was excellent, crispy and good flavor; the accompanying curry was solid, pretty standard Japanese-style curry. The bao were very good--more savory and less sweet than others we've had. The gyoza were good, but without their dipping sauce were a little bland.

Google
Amazing Ramen Spot! Fuku Ramen is hands down the best ramen place in Birmingham! The restaurant is clean and cozy, and the staff is super friendly. Their tonkotsu ramen is rich and flavorful, with tender chashu and perfectly cooked noodles. The miso ramen is just as delicious! Don’t miss their karaage and takoyaki—crispy, juicy, and full of flavor. Great food, great service—highly recommend!

Yelp
Fuku ramen has been incredible every time that I go! I love the Steamed Buns and the Black Garlic Ramen! I also tried the Thai milk Tea and it is now a staple every time I go by Our servers have always been friendly and quick The interior is trendy and clean I can't wait to go back soon!

Yelp
I'm originally from the Bay Area, where there is a heavy Asian presence, so there's a lot of Chinese, Korean, Indian, Filipino and Japanese restaurants. My experienced palette in these restaurants lead me to a 3 rating for this one, due to the very average Ramen dish I ordered. Flavor wasn't hittin, shrimp had no flavor on its own and the veggies tasted like from a frozen bag. Even the Edamame starter tasted like it was boiled from frozen. The freshness just wasn't there. The service was great though! But I can't take a ramen house seriously when the servers are dressed like they just came from a workout at the gym. Won't be coming back unfortunately.

Yelp
Super salty...almost inedible. Horrible texture and only adequate service. Even the ice tea had an off flavor. Will not return.

Yelp
My first experience with Fuku Ramen was in Tuscaloosa with my little sister. We enjoyed it when we went so I was happy to see a location opened here this year. I made a to go order for Black Garlic Ramen, Don Buri Rice Bowl "Mapo Tofu" and Seafood Okonomiyaki. My favorite item by far was the Mapo Tofu. It's a spicy rice dish with ground pork, tofu, scallion, fermented bean paste, and a chili oil sauce. The flavor in this dish made me want it again. 2nd favorite was the Black Garlic Ramen. The flavor was nice and had chashu pork, black garlic, mushrooms, egg, scallions and bamboo shoots. The to go containers for the ramen were functional and well packaged. The broth is at the bottom and your noodles and toppings are separated from the broth in a basket on top. Unsure if this is the usual set up for a to go ramen, but I liked it. I typically eat ramen wherever I order it from and not to go. My let down was the Seafood Okonomiyaki. Something about the flavor and consistency was off for me. One of my friends Mom's used to make the best ones and this did not even come close. Maybe I should have gotten the steam buns instead. Would not order this again, but I would order everything else.

Yelp
Fantastic Ramen!!!! Great service. Comfortable space. I had the spicy miso and it was excellent. Boba tea was also amazing. Sad that this place wasn't busier.

Yelp
The appetizers are really good, I had the veggie rolls. I had a delicious vegetarian ramen. The carnivore in me asked them to add some pork belly and delete the egg. Amazing ramen with a light savory flavor. The servers were friendly and helpful. I will eat there again. They have a location in Tuscaloosa, too. I have not been there.

Yelp
SO has been wanting to try this new ramen place, so here we are. Cute restaurant, nice employees. The ramen is pretty good.....may be comparable to Bamboo on 2nd without the atmosphere. The noodles have a good chew, and the broth is served hot and very flavorful. The egg tastes good but is a bit overcooked. I agree with another Yelp review that the price is high.....though seems on par with all ramen places in Birmingham. Basically about $20 after tax and tip....honestly that prices me out for the most part. A bowl of noodles in general is just not worth $20 to me.

Yelp
We ordered takeout from Fuku which I imagine would have been even better inside the restaurant. We got the Tom Yum, chasu donburri, unagi donburri. Everything was good portioned, and full of umami. The favorite was the chasu. We really appreciated the tofu soup it came with as well.

Yelp
Oh what a delightful way to enjoy a great meal!! Extremely clean and quaint atmosphere with personable service with great selections to choose from. You really can't go wrong here! Dine in or take out either way you're in for a treat! Be sure to get an Exotic Bomba for dessert it is mind blowing.

Yelp
This is a newer ramen spot here in Birmingham. It is an open seating place with extremely attentive and friendly staff. The food and portion size was really great. They also offer boba tea in a variety of ways. There is plenty of parking and both indoor/outdoor seating. We will definitely plan on coming back!

Yelp
First time coming to this restaurant and overall I thought it was a good experience. The service was quick, it's a fairly casual restaurant. You sit down, order off the menu and a server brings you your food and drinks. I wasn't too impressed with the pork buns. I thought it was a lot of bun for a fairly small amount of pork. The ramen was pretty good. I agree with others on the prices being fairly steep but overall a good experience

Yelp
I am very excited about having Fuku in Birmingham area. Their original location is in Tuscaloosa, and it was one of my top 10 places to eat in 2022 (DM me if you want to full list). I love the authenticity of this place. Nicely laided out in simple classic Japanese decor. The menu is true to a traditional Japanese ramen house. Wait staff and service are helpful and efficient. We dined on Sunday night and started with several appetizers. The Chicken Karage and Rocky Shrimp were my favorites. The fried tofu was good, but tofu doesn't not have a lot of flavor (it's more of a texture). And be careful not to burn your tongue as the tofu is VERY hot. For ramen I tried the Tom Yum. Honestly, the broth did not have that unique sourness that I expect from Tom Yum. It was just okay. My biggest reservation is the cost. I normally don't comment about food cost because there are so many factors involved. $17 for a bowl of ramen seems a bit high to me.

Yelp
This place is the real deal. It is my go to place for ramen and we live all the way in McCalla. We go here every time our kid goes to grandma's for the weekend Their ramen is so good. I've tried the spicy seafood, miso tonkatsu and tonkotsu ramen. None let me down. We also have ordered the gyoza, crab rangoons and most importantly the Steamed Bun appetizer. My stepmom is Chinese and always takes us to Chinatown when we visit Houston - that was the first place I'd tried steamed buns and they were so so delicious . I had been looking for those in Birmingham for years and when I saw they added these to the menu I was sold that I wouldn't be going anywhere else for ramen. We have also tried the Thai Tea & Brown sugar boba and both were perfect.

Yelp
I've been here a few times now, and we always leave happy and full. The restaurant is small but we've managed to avoid crowded times and have always been seated right away. Service is friendly but occasionally slow. So far I've tried the tonkatsu ramen, the miso ramen, and the shoyu ramen. All have been savory and flavorful. My husband tried the katsu curry rice bowl the very first time we went, and now he won't order anything else because he loves it so much.

Eric D.

Yelp
Had lunch here today. I had ramen and my son had a rice bowl. The food was great but the service was even better. Will absolutely be back.
google avatar

Lillian E.

Yelp
Best ramen place I've ever been. The selection was great and everyone had something they loved. Ordered bubble teas at the end and the cups were so sturdy we used them the rest of the week. I am still thinking about their bao pork belly buns. I wish I would've ordered ten I could eat them every day for the rest of my life. It's been two months and I'm still thinking about it.
google avatar

Alice L.

Yelp
Takeout was a miss. Katsu curry was bland. Tonkatsu Don had no sauce. The miso soup was standard. The pork buns were good, but didn't make up for the lackluster other items. And it wasn't cheap! About $50 for two lunches and buns. Service was pleasant but it was just takeout so nothing strenuous required. The other visit we ate in, and it was better food. Not sure we will go again, sadly.

Yelp
Some of the best Ramen dishes ever! Portions are small for price (expensive), but every bite is delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
DELICIOUS! I forgot to take a picture of our ramen. It was delicious and all we had on our mind was getting it into our tummies!! Seriously the best, flavorful ramen we have had in Birmingham! We will be back!!

Yelp
RAMEN LOVE WITH YOU! Fuku Ramen is the newest ramen spot here in the Birmingham Metro. Located on highway 280 right next door Birminghams first Chicken Salad Chick location. Inside is super chic and adorable. Neon signage, perfect amount of seating with booth options as well as tables too. The menu is simple and easy. There are some pictures that go along with the menu items so you know what you are getting into. I was out this way attending an event with a friend and met my partner here after. He needed some food, though I had already eaten, we decided to grab a quick bite. So I settle for an appetizer and a bubble tea. Courtney mentioned the sesame chicken was fabulous. Our waitress was Tiffany, a very sweet and generous UAB student. She gave amazing recommendations and was a very pleasant person. Very sociable and sweet. Overall, this spot was a very nice surprise I just wishes that it was closer so I could go more often. But if you live close by, I highly recommend stopping by and trying this spot.

Yelp
I go here every Friday and have tried most of the dishes on the menu. Everything I've ever ordered has been amazing. The staff is always happy to see me and is quick with the refills, the food is hot and fresh, and the place has a welcoming vibe that keeps me coming back. All the ramen is incredible. It leaves a pleasant aftertaste and has a nice aroma and it really warms you up. However, if you are like me and are assuming ramen is the only thing this place does well, you're dead wrong. All the donburi rice bowls have varied flavors that hit the spot every time, no matter what you order. My recommendations, if you're trying this place for the first time: Favorite ramen: Tonkatsu (if I were to add anything, it would have to be an extra egg. My favorite part of the experience) Favorite donburi rice bowl: tie between Gyudon and Tonkatsudon (if you like spicy, though, the Mapo Tofu is top tier) Favorite side: Takoyaki (though, the Okonomiyaki and the steamed buns are close runner ups) If you're going for lunch, it will be a lot faster because it isn't as busy as evenings when the place can be packed (but they will always try to seat you as quickly as possible).

Kaitlyn J.

Yelp
I love this place! Their veggie rolls and sesame chicken are so good! The staff are always so friendly and kind. It's always very quiet and super clean inside! This is a must try place in Lee Branch!

Yelp
Really glad we finally got a ramen place on this side of town. We visited the first week they were open and everything seemed to be going well. We started with the crab puff appetizer which we didn't care for but we both loved our ramen bowls. I went with the spicy miso ramen and it was delicious and packed full of flavor and ingredients. It was very filling and worth the price. They also have traditional Asian meat & rice/noodle dishes for the non ramen lovers. Hopefully this place can stay in business for a long time since the last few restaurants at this location have gone out. We will be back and continue to support.
google avatar

Joe T.

Yelp
This place is great. I've been multiple times and really like everything about the place. It wasn't crowded and you can get a great bowl of ramen or don. The goyza dumplings are perfect and a great starter. I have ordered the ma po don and it fills you up for sure. Very spicy. The facilities are nice also from the booths to the tables.
google avatar

The Marcus R.

Yelp
We door dashed an order. The steamed buns were delicious. But the folded buns are off the scale. Way way off the scale. The chicken katsu was awesome. I cannot imagine eating this in store as the door dash was a 5! The packaging was the best I have ever seen. The care level of the packed food, the placement within containers I should have taken pics as they were artful for take out. The food was superior quality. I am totally impressed! Cannot wait to order again or dine in soon! Must try. This place is a solid 5 star rating!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious, filling, great selection of food! I will definitely be returning to try more items on the menu. The flavors were hitting just right.

Yelp
Friendly prompt service, open airy dining area. Our first time eating Ramen so this was a new experience. We wanted our experienced son and daughter to join us and show us the ropes or maybe the noodles, they both were busy. We started off with Steamed Buns with Pork Baozi, made with Bao Bun Dough. Very Good, soft goodness. I tried the Tonkatsu Ramen, it was good to ok. The broth was not to my liking, we eat a lot of Vietnamese and love all their broths. My husband had the pork Wonton Ramen with added bamboo shoots. He was very pleased and I liked his broth better. We will give them another try when the son & daughter can guide us.
google avatar

Timothy F.

Yelp
Got the Tonkatsu ramen and some pork gyoza for lunch. The food was fantastic and the service was great as well. The gyoza were some of the best I have had, definitely in the recent past. The ramen broth was extremely flavorful and the noodle texture was perfect.
google avatar

Hotdog N.

Yelp
One of the best ramen shops out here! The food is amazing and the service even better! My family and I go so much, they pretty much know our name and usual order. Their steamed buns are so good, I crave it all the time! You can't go wrong eating here!!

Andrey P.

Yelp
Excellent service and Ramen was excellent! Although they have several hibachi grills it was not too loud. Ambience was perfect. I believe the placement of tables in back away from hibachi is excellent choice!
google avatar

Vu D.

Yelp
Great ramen. Appetizer was good. Service is friendly. Budget friendly. Ramen so flavorful

Yelp
~ Okay guys! Here is my full review! I have been here over 4 times. I loved everything, but my fav 2 are the Katsu Curry & the Sesame Chicken . The service is great! Everytime I come everyone is always nice! Literally everyone! Even the ones who aren't serving you. The bathrooms are nice and clean as well. 10/10! I gave you my favs now go try them for yourself .
google avatar

Matthew D.

Yelp
The Chicken Katsu Curry is a thing to behold. I literally havent tried anything else bc its so good
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
Really enjoy the menu. I have been there 3 times-ramen soup, rice bowl and a Chinese dish. All were excellent and service is good. If you go after 9 they may rush you putting up tables.
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
Terrible got a variety to go and nothing good. Picked up sesame chicken , number 3 Ramen , pork and vegetable dumplings, miso and seaweed salad and purple fries, couldn't eat it.
google avatar

Donnie B.

Yelp
A great place to try some ramen! The staff are very helpful with menu questions. Can't wait to go again.
google avatar

RS R.

Yelp
Best Raman so far in the US. Their broth is very good which is key to goo Raman. The pork is well prepared-- great roast flavor and is extremely tender. Added in the sprouts for that nice crunch! Will definitely dine here again.
google avatar

Janet K.

Yelp
I was asked by 4 different people if I was making a Togo order even though I announced my intentions when I walked in an selected a seat at an empty bar facing a wall. Don't know if they were rushing to grab a customer to get my tip or I wasn't appreciated in their dining room? Made my selection and the waiter met me at the hostess' stand after putting my order in the kitchen, for to cash out. Again there's that TIP request before service is rendered situation! When I told him I was paying in cash once I received my order instead of paying it then, his tone changed. He disappeared and the person that gave me my order within 13 minutes received the 18% tip. My order is $45, am I supposed to give a tip before Service is my worst pet peeve. Anyway the food was delicious, the order was correct and packed well. I was annoyed I felt rushed to make an order. Hence 4 stars instead of 5. Maybe it's a cultural difference that caused so many servers to approach me in a short time? Anyway, I will try them again and dine in.

Kristin L.

Yelp
Good location in Lee Branch. Quick service and tasty ramen. We didn't get it but they had boba and coffees as well.

Emmy T.

Yelp
Best ramen place in Birmingham area! Love their wide range of appetizers and the ramens are delicious. Nice ambiance as well. Highly recommend.

Barbara J.

Yelp
Nestled in the shopping center, you might overlook this gem. We were greeted immediately after we arrived. Alexis was our server. She was very friendly and knowledgeable. She helped me order since I had never been here before. Millard and I had the Black garlic Ramen of course I had leftovers
google avatar

Allen Z.

Yelp
We ordered the traditional pork broth ramen and a veggie soy ramen and both were great! The pork bun app was yummy as well. My only complaint is the food is more Chinese than Japanese. For example, the pork broth was definitely a Chinese style broth than the traditional Japanese ramen pork broth. But the food was still tasty so we'll probably be coming back
google avatar

Kat T.

Yelp
Wow! Steamed chicken with ramen was amazing! One of the best ramen bowls I've ever had! Great service was a plus!

Mary Kathryn B.

Yelp
Food was great and service was quick! A lot of flavor in the food and menu has a ton of options. Will be coming back!

Kristine N.

Yelp
Love Fuku! The food is good and the staff are always so kind and helpful. The restaurant is always clean and well taken care of.

Joe R.

Yelp
Very good ramen. The menu is a little clunky but the quality of the food makes up for it

Daniela D.

Yelp
It was the first time coming here and the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive; The food tasted very fresh and it was delicious; I love the design of the restaurant and the atmosphere was great. Will definitely be coming back more often!

Alethea N.

Yelp
We went for a quick dinner on a rainy night. Was good, very friendly staff just thought a bit overpriced.

Jessica W.

Yelp
New ramen place alert! This place just opened up and it is worth the drive from Birmingham. Highly recommend the tonkotsu ramen with the pork cutlet. The katsu was perfectly fried. Miso ramen is also tasty and good portion sizes. Service was quick and friendly. Definitely will be coming back!
