On the Grid : Fulton Hot Dog King

"Perched right in the middle of Fulton Mall, Fulton Hot Dog King is no secret to the locals. Mall shoppers and neighborhood locals pop-in to have a taste of New York history. People say these are the best dogs this side of Coney, but others swear by the chicken sandwich or the #3 smoothie (Banana-mango-pineapple). Street dogs are a staple of New York food culture, but Fulton HDK is a true blast to the past. With up to a dozen staff crammed behind the counter you’ll get quick and friendly service! In-and-out before you can count your change." - This Also

31 Snappy, Standout Hot Dogs Around NYC

"Skip the pizza and hamburgers here, but the slender, old-fashioned franks with conventional toppings are just fine at this downtown Brooklyn stand right in the middle of big-box stores on the Fulton Street Mall. It’s been there since 1914, making it one of the oldest establishments of this type in town. There is no seating to speak of, so go to nearby Albee Square to get comfortable with your bargain-priced hot dogs." - Robert Sietsema

This place was on the corner at Fulton St forever and was forced to close. Saw the sign posted of their reopening and grabbed some work friends and headed over. Prices are a bit higher, but is expected as costs and location contribute greatly. We ordered chick dogs, mustard & sauerkraut, and with onions. The hotdogs were ok. They gave a cup for free fountain fruit punch which was so refreshing on the hot summer day. The hotdogs were ok- very small relative to the bun and toppings. $10 for 2 chili dogs so priced reasonably. They also have cold beers in the refrigerator and the regular sodas. Will go back to try the knishes and fries.

Google
This is a decent place, not nothing crazy. I’m a huge Hot Dog lover and seeing the Sabrett umbrellas outside immediately caught my attention. The staff was polite but a huge peeve of mine is when you Place an order and the person accepting the money doesn’t tell you the total. I’m handing him a $10 bill and he just looks to take the money. I asked and he told me $6. Which for a store front isn’t a bad price to pay. The hot dogs were a little disappointing because they just didn’t seem to have the really good snap that you expect. It did have one, but it just wasn’t the normal “snap” that you get when you bite in. The bread was very basic. I’d rate the hot dog a 6.5-7 the max. I sent back in to give the sausage a try. I must say I was expecting to lay at least $5 but it was only $3.50. The sausage had some really good heat to it. The bread was just okay, would probably take this dog to another level is they put it on the grill for a minute or so. They accept card with a minimum of $6 purchase

Google
Do yourself a favor and get a dog with everything! It’s delicious!!! I got the spicy sausage which might have been a bit too spicy to completely enjoy the meal but overall great. Amazing French fries but poor Turkey burgers.

J. “Dallas” Young

Google
The best hotdog I’ve had in a long time. I got a chili cheese dog with fries and a drink for $8, which was amazing. I highly recommend this cheap eats spot.

Google
They’re so good! Their veggie burger and their fries slapped! The staff was super sweet and attentive too! Def come here! Affordable as well! 🫶🏼

Google
Hot dogs were good and cheap enough. They accept both cards and cash, allow you to dine in or to take out.

Google
Very good hot dogs. Better than those from foodtrucks. Come here and enjoy!

Google
They are very friendly and efficient and the hot dogs are always perfectly topped with condiments.

Yelp
Came in on a weekday around 11am. There was no line, but there were people standing outside eating. There really isn't any seating, just some tables and a counter to eat at. Ordered one hot dog with everything: mustard, ketchup, sauerkraut. Hot dog had a nice snap. It's not the thickest hot dog, but the bread to sausage ratio was appropriate. Hot dog was cheap and definitely a good snack/post exercise bite.

Yelp
This place is closed ! It is not opened and their is no other location at all smh I wanted a hot dog so bad today
google avatar

Yelp
Food is good and you feel like a real NYER when you eat there. Prices are great!! It's a hole in a wall but it's times better than a dirty water hot dog cart. Also they have outside dining. The guys that work there are always very nice and fast.

Yelp
I come to this area often and have been wanting to try this spot out. I finally pulled the trigger. The service was fine, but the restaurant itself looks very dirty. I felt gross being there and regretted ordering food a few minutes after I ordered. Fortunately I saw the guy prep my food wearing gloves. As for the food, I may have went for the wrong item as I got a cheesesteak combo that came with fries. The sandwich itself lacked flavor. The beef definitely needed some salt or seasoning as it did not taste like much. The vegetables and sauce made it very wet, which isn't a big deal, but didn't improve the sandwich. I definitely would NOT get the cheesesteak again. If I ever have the need or desire to come back here, I would try the hot dog and may update this review. I do see a lot of positive reviews for the hotdog...I mean, it's in the name.

Yelp
Forget the hot dogs from the carts! If you are looking for grilled hot dogs, the kind that has the "snap", this is the spot. For $2.50, you get an all beef hot dog fresh off the grill on a soft bun. If you ask for everything, they put mustard, ketchup, and sauerkraut on it. If you get it to stay they put it on a wax paper on a paper plate. To go, wrapped in foil. Not only do they serve hot dogs they also have burgers, fries, pizza, fruit drinks and much more. It's almost always crowded and it's cash only. It's one of the few old school food joints left in NYC and I really appreciate this spot for serving up some classic comfort food. If you are a tourist and you are looking for authentic hot dog that's similar to Nathan's, this is the place.

Yelp

Yelp
Every few years or so, I crave a nyc hotdog and usually Gray's Papaya is my go-to. Nowadays I'm often in downtown brooklyn and have walked by this place many times. Today said craving called and consumed a hotdogs from here. Nice snappy skin, decent flavor with all the fixings! It's always busy here. Cash only.
google avatar

Connie H.

Yelp
I don't normally seek out hot dogs but I feel like every time I pass here it's consistently busy, and add to the mix that this place looks old school, you Fulton Hot Dog King is doing something right. $3 for a cheese dog and $3 for a hot sausage. They were both good with my pref being the hot sausage. You would need two (maybe three) hot dogs to count as a meal. They do serve other items like burgers, fries, knishes, etc. but I find it just wrong to not go with a hot dog if it's your first time. Two important notes: 1. Ca$h only! 2. If you plan to eat there, say so. If not they'll wrap up your hot dogs in foil and give it to you in a to-go bag. As other Yelpers have mentioned, this place has been here for a long time, like 1914 long. Bravo to them and I wish them many more years to come!

Yelp
Good cheap food. Got some hotdogs, a cheeseburger, sausage with cheese and fries. Cash only.

Yelp
As a child I loved eating a knish everytime I went shopping with my mom. However yesterday when I purchased a knish it was dry, burnt, dark inside and hard as a rock outside. They can do better. Also the talking over the food not healthy. My server was so busy talking I did not even think of ordering a drink.

Yelp
What a fun blast to the past. $3 hot sausage with mustard and kraut actually packs a punch. I've seen many people bringing kids here - seems perfect since you get to watch them grilling the product. Hope this place stays around!
google avatar

Katey G.

Yelp
I've been here for an occasional hotdog craving and it's definitely a solid 4 star dog. It reminds me a little of Papaya King, but with more of a lunch crowd than an drunk eating crowd. The menu has a lot more than just hot dogs, but of course that's their specialty. If you have a strong need for a good hot dog, make this your go to. Fulton has been in Downtown Brooklyn for many years - let's keep it there!
google avatar

Jazz K.

Yelp
Damn! Best hot dogs AND value for money, definitely recommend if you want that quick fix!
google avatar

Spencer L.

Yelp
Solid GRILLED hot dogs. If you know, you know. Get the hot dog if you are in for a little snack, the hot sausage if you want a bigger snack.

Yelp
When you wake up one day and decide that you are going to accept the title of "Foodie", there are a lot of connotations that come with the title. One of them is that you have an appreciation for the finer things (to some degree). Haute cuisine is something that fires your brain, and rightfully so. Mastery of the culinary arts is to be admired and can be a beautiful and luscious thing to behold. Other times, you just want a darn Hot Dog. For those times your inner Foodie says "I really just want to eat like I just partied all night." or "I want a hot dog or sausage that has been grilled perfectly." there is Fulton Hot Dog King. Calling this place a hot dog "stand" does not do it justice. The long counter, awning and signage look like something out of another age (and it likely is, I have been told this place has been there at least since the 80's but it could be even older). Service bounces between perfunctory to hilarious. Sometimes they take your order and it's straight forward, other times they quote you different prices several times in a row to mess with you. It's all in good fun and they are never mean or impolite. I love both their hot dogs and spicy sausage. They are always grilled to have that wonderful "snap" when you bite into them. The spicy sausage definitely has a bit of a kick and the hot dog has a wonderful savory flavor. They offer the basics to put on it including sauerkraut and cooked onions. There is no seating, so this is a strictly "to go" affair, but there is seating in the public spaces a short walk away near Albee Square. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and drop by this example of a bygone era and satisfy (a part of) your inner Foodie!

Yelp
Love grilled salty meats with their crispy casing. Quick and easy. Price is right. Just watch that they don't give you a burnt dog unless you want it this way.
google avatar

Kiki K.

Yelp
Best hot dogs in the area. Actually, they're my favorite. When I crave a dog, I come here. Simple, classic, delish dogs that surprise you. Have one and you'll think, okay, that's a good dog, nothing special. But then you'll have a dog somewhere else and you'll think, hmmm, kinda bland, mushy, even gelatinous. Then you will realize the meaty, smoky, grilled flavor with the snap/bite this dog has, and you'll wish you were having a dog from here! Then the addiction begins and you are hooked! I don't give it 5 stars because I've only had the dogs. I want to try the sausage but the dogs call me! Try one if you're in the area. You won't regret it!
google avatar

Kathy D.

Yelp
My favorite spot for a hot dog! I always get the same thing, but the hot sausage with sauerkraut always hits the spot. The sausage is juicy with a bit of a crisp to the grilled outside. Ketchup and mustard. Mmm. Also love the guys there--always welcoming with a smile. And the shop itself is cute. Plan to eat standing up, or walk across the street to the public tables.
google avatar

Marie-Madeleine G.

Yelp
I really just wanted a quick bite on this Mon. I hadn't had anything to eat all day and was in the neighborhood. Craving kicks in-- how could I resist. I took off a star because it's cash only, and I really wasn't in the mood to go to the ATM, but I did. Why? Because the Franks are really good here. They're juicy, savory-- all the things a hot dog should be. I also had a side of fries. They weren't the best, which adds in to the 4 stars. But otherwise, the staff was super sweet. I got exactly what I wanted from her: a quick meal, good food, for a banging price. Come through guys, this is a typical NY-er fare you don't want to miss out on. As always, happy eating and drinking. Marie Madeleine Gnagniko.

Yelp
As I walked into hotdog haven (can't really say shop because it's on a corner and all awnings, doors, gates whatever you want to call it are up giving it an open, fleamarket feel), I heard "what do you want what do you want?!?" in quick succession. Without enough time to browse the menu board I replied "hot dog hot dog hold all sauce" and I felt like a true Brooklynite hotdog pro *GRINS*. I can't say if it's one vendor or several that share this corner space because although it's one long counter where your place your order, they somehow manage to look together but apart. They have smoothies, various types of hotdogs and hamburgers, and at the very end I saw pizza. I'm sure I missed something. Come hungry leave happy even with only three stools at the very end by the pizza area. My yelp pal JackSprat told me they've been in existence for over 50 years. Nice. Things still taste fresh. Lol I enjoyed my hotdog and wish I'd found here sooner or maybe not (gym calls). Nice experince but not if you're on the fussy side and don't particularly enjoy munching your food standing (sometimes on the street) and being jostled by new customers. Me? I likey! Five stars! It is what it is. Take it or leave it. The End.

Yelp
Brooklyn's answer to Gray's Papaya. Just the right amount of chargrill and crunch. Be forewarned though - if you're there anywhere close to closing it's takeout-only and they're likely to have run out of chili! (Because they're so delish)

Earldine J.

Yelp
I no longer live in Brooklyn but when I come back to vist this is a must go to place. I have a standard order 4 well done franks heavy on the mustard 2 with relish 2 with kraut and 1 hot sausage with mustard and relish. When I lived in Brooklyn I worked in walking distance of this spot and would tell anyone if they wanted a good hot dog this was the spot. Manhattan has Gray's Brooklyn has Fulton.

Yelp
Right by my work and very convenient for a quick bite to eat and very affordable. My favorite is the spicy sausage (attached photo) for 2.50... I love spicy food and even for me it gives me a good challenge and has a very nice kick. I also get the cheeseburger with fries all the time for $5.00..the burger is surprisingly solid and gets the job done. Great place for a quick bite.
google avatar

Steven C.

Yelp
Great spot for a quick hot dog. Always crowded but very fast service. Hot Sausage off the grill with mustard and kraut and a knish with mustard. Perfect to cure those hunger pains for a quick bite on the go
google avatar

Teresa S.

Yelp
I used to frequent this spot when I was a teenager and was running the streets shopping with friends downtown Brooklyn. I stopped by today because my mom wanted a hot dog. We passed a few hot dog stands and Im like uhmm where are you going? She says she has a spot where she goes for her hot dogs and sausages and lo and behold it was here. The place looked the same with some extra menu items. I was shocked when the worker behind the counter knew my mom, I was like dang you come here that often. She said she stops by whenever she's in the area. They have like four or five bar seats all the way in the back and dont get too comfy back there because if more than two people sit there you will be cramped, LOL. Now to the food, I ordered a sausage with a small pineapple juice and devoured both. I wasnt even that hungry but since my mom was treating I couldnt resist and boy was I surprised. That sausage was goood and hit the spot. All I had on it was mustard and ketchup and it was umm umm delicious. It had the nice amount of spiciness and wasnt overcooked. I shouldve ordered one to go. I wont forget this corner spot in the future and will check it out when I want some cheap good eats.

Yelp
Nothing special, just a great meal on the go for the busy New Yorker (or visitor). I recommend the namesake hot dogs. They've never served a bad meal.

Charles B.

Yelp
I am a major hot dog lover been wanting to come here for the longest i bought several dogs philly cheesesteak combo nd onion rings. i had a dog on the way home with some of the onion rings. ok in my opinion this place is incredibly overrated but its cheap so i feel i didn't waste my money too badly. I couldnt finish the hot dog. i dont like tough casing and they were skinnier than what i thought they'd be but they were way too spicy for my taste and the onion rings tell them not to over fry them bc most weren't edible good but gave me major heartburn. philly steak was rough in texture it was a disappointment. i never ate the other dogs at home i hated them didnt eat any of the fries bc i cant eat after they get cold. oh well the hotdogs taste like nathans with tough casing that strong salt flavor but spicy i dont like too much heat personally. not worth the wait on line in my opinion
google avatar

Jeff O.

Yelp
Love it! This is what NY should be. Great hot dogs, NY-nice people, fun place. It's in the style of Gray's Papaya / Papaya King / etc. This might be my favorite hot dog in NYC. I went to Dekalb Market before and was pretty much sickened from the fakery that exists there. It's fine for consumption but it has absolutely no soul. Fulton Hot Dog King has soul.
google avatar

John J.

Yelp
I love this place. Basic grill cooking that tastes good. Staff is great and the food is too. You can get a philly to a hotdog and everything is made with love here.
google avatar

Lanash L.

Yelp
This was the 1st NY hot dog experience for my kids and they loved it. Very str8 forward place, you can see them cooking the dogs and applying the toppings which my kids enjoyed. We had 4 hot dogs with everything (relish, onions, sauerkraut) and an order of onion rings. Everything was deliciois and we love that this place is halal and cooks no pork.
google avatar

Gazelle L.

Yelp
I've been going here for years. I always get the hot sausage ! It's so good and juicy ! I really love the customer service here ! It's very good place to get a quick bite.
google avatar

Sal M.

Yelp
I came here just looking for something to calm my hunger, but now I want to come here every day! The food is just that good. I had the cheeseburger, fries and drinks all for under $10. Great to come with friends too.
google avatar

Jive O.

Yelp
Quick, cheap, variety and convenient. Really as simple as that. Staying a Indigo Hotel and didn't feel like paying $10-15 for breakfast. Crossed and street and saw this place, doesn't look like much but it was busy. Got my breakfast for $5, it was a lot of food that my hotel would gladly charge $15 for. Will definitely be there for the next few days, the hot dog looks good so I might try that next

Destiny G.

Yelp
There was mold on hot dog bread. That is so disgusting like there should be someone checking out the food expiration before serving it to people. Not a pleasant experience at all. There was no issue for a refund
google avatar

Aaron S.

Yelp
I'm not a hot dog fan much at least when I use to eat hot dogs this would've been the go to spot as opposed to Nathan's hotdogs. They make Knishes, Kebabs, Franks, and Spicy beef sausages. The sausages are legit, with ketchup and mustard or without.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
New York City has some of the best cuisine in the world. You can get everything from the most expensive cut of steak to New York Style pizza. But there is one food that will always be American as apple pie, something that is synonymous with the City of New York: the hot dog. Fulton Hot Dog King is serving up hot dogs and sausage dogs faster than you can say frankfurter. Their hot dogs and hamburgers are cooked to perfection, topped with a myriad of delicious items, sure to make your mouth water! So the next time you're in Brooklyn, join the locals and enjoy a classic New York staple!
google avatar

Lisa D.

Yelp
Fulton Hot Dog King likely offers the most reasonable (and speedy) lunch in the area. It's only $1.50 for a tasty grilled hot dog, and the fruit juices won't set you back much either. This place has a devoted following, but they move people through the lines very efficiently.
google avatar

Jorge G.

Yelp
This place is great as always..but there's a serious problem with numbskulls ordering their food and then..standing there shoveling it into their mouths right at the counter where the line is for other people waiting to order! Sipping from their drinks as if they've not a care in the world. Yo, the counter is not your personal dinner table, let people through so they can get their food too, dummies! This place needs to set up some tables or sawhorses or other eating surfaces outside the glass. Anything. Seriously. DO something, management!
google avatar

Mister R.

Yelp
Sausage was spicy and delicious. Service was quick and painless. I can't even complain about a single thing. All beef, no pork. I'm a fan. I'd def recommend this as a quick cheap eat in Brooklyn.
google avatar

Dr. Snarkenstein Y.

Yelp
Hit the spot. Ahhhh. Got one dog and one sausage, both loaded. Sausage was much better. $4.50 total. Sweet. Place was packed at 1pm on early Spring Friday so I knew it would be good.
google avatar

J E.

Yelp
Definitely one of my favorite spots for lunch. Good food and without a doubt affordable.
google avatar

Katrina D.

Yelp
Had the sausage with kraut, onions, and ketchup. It was juicy, spicy, and the bun was delicious. Best dog ever!!
google avatar

Bill M.

Yelp
This place actually seems to be more an all purpose fast food joint than a solid hot dog place. They had plenty of burgers, pizza, and deli type sandwiches on the menu. I was hoping to get breakfast, but that stopped at noon. I ended up getting a grilled cheese and a small pineapple juice drink. The sandwich was melty, cheesey, and buttery. The juice was sweet but not too sweet. Oh, and the total was 3.00. Seems like a good spot for a cheap snack or a quick meal. It sucks that they are cash only. It also sucks that the ordering process is kind of awkward and offputting. They had 10 guys there but for some reason I had to order at the one guy farthest away from me so they could chat up the pretty nurses on break....yeah ok. Overall this is a solid middle of the pack place for quick cheap eats.

bill l.

Yelp
Excellent old school frankfurter (not hot dog) spot. Been here all my life. Come and try a excellent cheap crispy dog made to your liking. The chili dog was good, and the one I had with relish. Reminded me of old school nedicks ( google it , old nyc spot) frankly better than modern day Nathan's. Come and try before some developer builds some overpriced condo here
google avatar

Jannu B.

Yelp
This place is outstanding with their Tasty Burger and Hot dogs! I used to work at Aeropostale across the street from this place. I rate Fulton hot dog kind a 4 starts because of the kind service and amazing fast food. I dislike the fact that it can get a bit crazy in there with the line. I dislike waits for fast food but that's always the case .

Anya L.

Yelp
really yummy hot dogs, and cheap but it gave me and my boyfriend both an upset stomach.
google avatar

Paul L.

Yelp
A pretty wonderful and delicious establishment! The people are so nice there and everything is so cheap!
google avatar

Kris F.

Yelp
Hot day? Hot dog! Had one sausage dog on a bun running an errand, on the way back went for two more. Six bucks total... clean and neat. The sauerkraut is smooth (with a little pickled bite), but the dog and bun were extra smooth. Amazing texture for both. You want a bonafide Brooklyn dog? Go here!
google avatar

Sherine M.

Yelp
Quick, simple, good ole fashioned hot dogs. Nothing fancy and there's literally no seating but this place definitely gets the job done, and cheaply.
google avatar

Quincy T.

Yelp
This is the hot dog/ sausage capital of Brooklyn. Low on cash, only a few minutes for lunch, starving? This is your place to handle all those needs. This place gives you a hot dog/ spicy sausage cheap, fast, and with toppings....i mean you'll be in and out before you can count your change. The guys behind the counter understand that you're not there to socialize, so they do their best to get you fed and get you out...no complaints here.
