NE Portland Is Getting a Mulled Wine Bar For Winter | Eater Portland

"Named after glühwein and glühbier, I found Glübar to be a holiday pop-up aimed at bringing seasonal comfort by offering house-spiced mulled wines, glühbier (mulled high-ABV beers), ciders, and a house-spiced sake, plus baked goods; co-owner Alex Kurnellas says they wanted to 'inject a little' holiday magic with warm alcohol. Their glühbier starts with a high-ABV base and their own spice and fruit mixtures — the opening-week Fruitcake Delight, for example, uses Fort George Brewery 10th Anniversary Barleywine (15% ABV) mulled with ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and turbinado sugar and garnished with rum-soaked raisins and currants. The classic glühwein is Cooper’s Hall pinot noir mulled with cinnamon, anise, and turbinado sugar and garnished with clove. For hot cider they use Two Towns Nice & Naughty Imperial Spiced Cider (warmed and garnished with lemon and clove), and their house-spiced sake is Oregon’s Momokawa mulled with clove, orange, and honey and served hot with a jasmine tea bag infusion. Drinks are $7 for eight ounces, with an optional $3 shot of barrel-aged apple or brandy wine for extra punch; Glübar is running at least through the end of the year and is open 4 p.m.–10 p.m. Wednesday–Friday and noon–10 p.m. Saturday–Sunday." - Alex Frane

This is one of my go-to spots in Portland. They always have a great rotation of breweries coming through, which means you can try something new almost every time you visit. They also have a beer cave in the back with a strong selection of cans available for purchase—a nice bonus if you want to take something home. The staff have always been super helpful and provide excellent service. Anytime I’m in the area, I make a point to stop in for a few drinks. Highly recommend if you love exploring new craft beers.

Google
Awesome concept. One brewery takes over each month and transforms the space into their own. They bring in top-tier breweries and the taps rotate often, so you really get to experience what each brewery has to offer. Can’t wait for the beginning of each month!

Google
Function is a wonderful spot hosting fun and exciting new breweries each month. An amazing addition to our neighborhood. We good each and every month. Steven is the very best, always so friendly and cordial.

Function checks all of the boxes. You can bring your own food and service is stellar. The beer servers are very friendly and knowledgeable. The beer is great because it rotates frequently and is from breweries that Portland doesn’t typically doesn’t have. Love this place.

Google
Absolutely a nice upscale place with outdoor heated seating. They switch out drink menus to keep things fresh with a wide selection around the world popular libations. This location is going to be packed during the holidays coming up, so get in there on a chill week and experience it.

Google
A great beer bar based on a rotating guest brewery takeover concept. The selected breweries are consistently top notch and offer Portland beer drinkers the opportunity to try brews that are otherwise hard to find in the area.

Google
Frequent patron & place is almost always empty when I go in. staff has always been really impersonal, but didn't take it to heart until recently. Regardless of the service, I loved the product, so I would constantly send people there when I worked nearby. I have no intention of returning or recommending the business to others after this. When I was last in, I bought four rounds & a 4 pack - about a $70 expense give or take. Right before leaving, the bartender asked me what I did. I told him I raise money for LGBT+ rights. I went to the bathroom & left, following that he followed me out the business door to tell me I was kicked out...without any real reason whatsoever. I asked why & he told me it was about my bathroom usage, but wouldn't get into specifics. It immediately came across as discriminatory, especially towards someone who is just trying to exist & use the restroom at a place I would say over time I've spent thousands of dollars at. No concern if I was okay or sick or anything either. I was shocked. I left a review, hoping this situation can be remedied. Edit: Things have gotten worse & clearly starts with how this business is being run. Owner messaged me & flat-out accused me of "lying" about the recent incident. I just wanted to add I am visibly a trans person who has been harassed for years using the bathroom at both locations (and I didn't know this was happening funnily enough or I would have stopped going sooner) & that was disclosed to me in these messages. This is EMBARRASSING coming from a business in this city. Unless this is resolved somehow, it is probably not a safe place for community members to frequent. Just excuse after excuse, placing blame on me with zero apology whatsoever. I attached part of the email I received to the review just so it's clear how little this business values their customer's their happiness & safety.

Google
The second iteration of Function absolutely nailed it! There's a new brewery every month. Great people, brilliant atmosphere, the front opens up on nice days, and there's outdoor seating. There are also food popups sometimes. Easily accessible for people of all abilities.

Yelp
I can get behind this concept. Great space. AC was on point when I came here it was 90 outside and I biked here, why not! It's beer! I'll be back with a crew next round. I hope this place stays in the hood.

Yelp
In a world that's rapidly losing beer bars, I love that Function exists. Monthly guest taps are a genius idea and a great way for locals to try some faraway brews. Nice that there are options to sit inside or outside. Hasn't really been busy any time I've dropped in, but the service was fine. HUGE shout out to Spanish Marie. Kind of obsessed with that brewery now, and I wouldn't even know about them if not for Function. Great way to try to beers we might not otherwise get around here. Flights are a great option to try several offerings at once. Fun place in a great neighborhood.

Amazing concept and so glad it's in the neighborhood! They're always super friendly and helpful with whatever they're pouring/featuring each month.

Yelp
In the heart of the Alberta District lies the brand new Function NE location. Like their NW location, Function hosts a different brewery each month. They offer memberships, have wonderful staff, and of course, the beer is always great!

Yelp
Great, clean, fun beer bar! Service is wonderful! Happy and friendly bartenders. Shout out to Jen! Great place for pups on the hot days because they have A/C and close to many food options! Give it a shot! (Or a pint rather!)
