The 38 Essential Barcelona Restaurants

"Seyma Ozkaya Erpul is originally from Turkey but has called Barcelona home for over a decade. She left her previous career as an engineer and marketing professional to pursue her passion for great food and design, opening the first Funky Bakers in the heart of El Born. While that location remains a popular takeaway coffee shop, the full Funky Bakers experience can be had at the Eatery and Deli location in Eixample. One side is a highly curated gourmet grocery, gift, and coffee shop, while the other is an all-day bistrot serving colorful and creative dishes from around Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, all paired with natural wines." - Sam Zucker

we came here for a brunch. the waiters were a bit passive to us at first since they noticed that we were foreigners and almost didn’t let us sit inside for some reason even though there were empty tables. the food was quite delicious except for the pancakes which just needed to be sweetened a bit more. the food took a while to be served but it was reasonable! the bread was really delicious though.

I was waiting to finish the food to give a review but I couldn’t wait till the end. It was so good! The menenem and basque cheesecake (especially the basque) was delicious and generous portions. The waiters were also super kind and smiley. Amazing overall.

We really loved this place, especially the bakery items. We had the menemen and the “Istanbuler Breakfast” - both were delicious and very satisfying. It’s a small place with only a few tables, so if you’re going for breakfast, you may prefer to go early.

A very good place for brunch or a simple lunch. Fresh ingredients, well-made dishes, and no unnecessary fuss. Calm, pleasant space with friendly service. Easy to come back to.

Funky and Ethery is a charming little spot with a lovely atmosphere. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The menu is short and clear, which we really appreciated, and the food was very tasty. I had the Fritada Verde, which was absolutely delicious — rich and flavorful. Personally, I felt it was missing a finishing touch or a contrast to balance the dish, maybe a small salad or some kind of topping. My partner had the Desayuno Istambuler and said it was very good overall, but a bit on the dry side. You can see exactly what both dishes looked like in the photos. Despite our small remarks — which we fully recognize are just personal preferences — we found the food to be really well made. We came for breakfast around 10:30 and the place was peaceful and quiet. A lovely spot for a relaxed morning meal!

Pain au chocolat with pistachio was the best thing in the world. The mix of both flavours was so amazing and it was just perfect. Def recommend.

I originally visited in 2024 and everything was amazing! Great wine selection, delicious plates, and fantastic desserts! Since, they closed down for dinner service, and a few months later reopened. I wish I could say it was just as good now. Unfortunately, many of the dishes lacked creativity and proper execution. The challah was burnt, the cecina was really good but just put on a plate with almonds, and the zucchini and sweet potato fritters were soggy. The service was still great with a very nice staff and same great wine selection! All in all, I wish it were as good as it used to be. I will still need to come back for brunch because that seems to be their bread and butter.
