The Best Restaurants in Richmond, Virginia | Eater DC

"Fuzzy Cactus is part dive bar, part live music venue and all-excellent “urban cowboy fare.” The breading recipe from chef Sam Lappin, previously of Pies and Thighs in Brooklyn, shines in fat chicken tenders. The crunchy and brilliantly spicy wings also easily pair with Fuzzy’s version of a beer-and-shot combo, all set to the old-school sounds of a working jukebox." - Stephanie Ganz

Great atmosphere and food! It took a hot minute for the food to come out but very worth it! Highly recommend this place, especially if you have specific dietary needs!

Google
Fuzzy Cactus has the best wings in Richmond and I wish more people would talk about it. Love to eat them with any of their sides and drinks. Their specials are also so well thought out and tasty. This is all on top of the very good vibes. We love to come here any day of the week.

Google
Omgoodness, I got the green chili burger and it was so good! Best burger I've had in a while. And, the fries came with a cheese sauce that was so delightful. Cute place. I ordered online and they had my order ready when I got there 20 mins later. And, the proces aren't bad for what you get.

Google
servers were so friendly. The vibe inside is really cute, lots of cool decor. The food was good. The one thing i didn’t like was that they automatically added an 18% gratuity for our table of 3 without telling us or warning us anywhere on the menu. Not cool.

Google
I went to Fuzzy Cactus for the first time the other day after having it recommended over and over and I wasn't disappointed! I only got drinks, but they were really tasty and creative. The bar staff definitely knows what they're doing. They also had pinball and pool, which I thought was pretty rad. I'm planning on going back to play some pool and try the food some time.

Google
Outstanding food and drinks. Vegan noches and Vegan sloppy joe was amazing. Chef kiss. Happy hour was a vibe. Where can you get a old fashion for $5?

Jake Smith

Google
One of the best bars in Richmond! Great happy hour specials and drinks in general. Their fried chicken is some of the best I’ve ever had!

We celebrated my brother's birthday during the band at Fuzzy Cactus last night. It was awesome!

Yelp
I went here last night with a friend for happy hour! The decor and vibes are very unique. In happy hour they have multiple $5 drink options, I got a daiquiri and the waitress was even nice enough to make it a coconut one which was delicious!! My friend came a few minutes after happy hour ended but they still gave her the happy hour price on her first one! I got a burrito and it was DELICIOUS. I ate the whole thing and loved it, all the flavors paired perfectly together! And the tortilla was perfectly toasted to give it a little crunch. All the prices were reasonable, and overall it's just a great place to hangout!

Yelp
I had read a Yelp review that said this place had extremely good wings so, I wanted to try them out My cousins and I came in just before Christmas and there was maybe 30 people inside. Nice place. Looked well lit, with good decor and some cool pinball machines. Typical bar scene. We sat down at the table and started to look at the menu. I saw the wings and said that's what I want. My cousins decided on a burger and the other, chicken fingers. After about 20 minutes, somebody finally came by and took her drink order and maybe 10-15 minutes later, the bartender came over to ask for our order. She was nice and friendly but it was pretty clear that she was the only one taking orders with the exception of maybe two people helping out, delivering food and drinks. It was obvious that she was struggling to keep up by herself. I'm sure it's hard to gauge traffic, that close to the holiday. After about 30 minutes, our food came out. At first, it didn't look like anything fancy (red plastic baskets with paper), but I will have to admit they were probably the best wings I've had, so far, in Richmond. Good, chunky blue cheese too. My cousin said they were the best chicken tenders she's ever had. One thing I really liked was there was a neighborhood cat that got inside. Based on how quickly it was escorted out, I guess it was not welcomed. I didn't mind the cat. To me, it was clear that this is not a restaurant, but more of a bar, but as it turns out, the food was really good in my opinion. Overall, good experience. A bit slow for service. The bartender was AMAZING. She did an amazing job in spite of it all. I will be back for more wings and would recommend.

Yelp
Best cocktails around, hands down! Great food too, the nachos were delicious! Ask for the homemade hot sauce

Yelp
The happy hour daiquiri and wing deals are among my favorite hidden treasures in Richmond. I love the vibe of this place and the food and drinks are always wonderful. The service is hit or miss - if you don't sit up at the actual bar, table service can be pretty slow, and I wouldn't say the servers are exactly friendly. Overall, this is a great spot and so fun to have close by if you live in the Northside area.

Yelp
Love this place!! Food is absolutely delicious. The atmosphere is kind of punk meets cowboy western. They have a big bar and lots of drink options. They seem to really stand out for their weekend brunch. But honestly everything I've had there has been fantastic, so you can't really go wrong. Can recommend the fried chicken meal, and the biscuits with chorizo gravy. The staff are super kind and cool. And service is quick. The building has a little stage and they often have bands / musicians playing there.
google avatar

Yelp
If you know me, you know I'm obsessed with Fuzzy Cactus. This is the quintessential RVA punk bar to me. The people who work here are kind and down to earth. The drinks are strong and the food is good. The music and shows are ones you don't want to miss. And the space rocks. I highly recommend stopping by during their Happy Hour (Tues-Fri 5-7pm). On my recent visit, I got a delicious $5 happy hour daiquiri and tried their incredible totchos (yes nacho tater tots). The honey old bay wings used to be my go to order when I first moved here (it's no longer on the menu). I love what they do with their chicken here. The fuzzy paloma is another great drink to order. I recommend Fuzzy Cactus to anyone who is visiting Richmond. Heck, I recommend it to anyone in Richmond!

Yelp
There isn't one thing this bar does wrong! Beautiful and fun decor and lighting, friendly and attractive and attentive and professional staff, excellent food, prices moderate, pool table for a buck a game, pinball machines for the Geeks, movies on tv (not sports, yay!), terrific bands on occasion, Lone Star Beer as the go to!!!! Why aren't you here?!?!
google avatar

M B.

Yelp
The best buffalo chicken tenders that I've ever had and they make their own dressing. It's insanely good. We've dined in a few times and it's always great the whole menu is delicious. Nice staff too! They're always pick and always get our order right. We're so lucky to have this restaurant/bar on the Northside.

Yelp
This place is so legit awesome. Ridiculously good cocktails. Not overrated lemony trash like Jasper. Good people, amazing food, nice prices. This is my jam.

Yelp
I'm almost embarrassed to say that I have passed this place at least 3 times a week for over 3 years. But... I'm proud to say, I finally decided today was the day I was going to see what this place was all about since it is in my Northside neighborhood. This place makes me realize why I like "Stranger Things"so much. The atmosphere was definitely giving 80s vibes! I mean, they even had "Labyrinth" playing on the TV (in closed caption.) I haven't seen that movie since I was 5! I'm not going to age myself, I'll let you use Google and figure out my age. Needless to say, I kind of liked the vibe. My greater joy was finding out they have a $5 house Old Fashioned on the happy hour menu. That was just my starter. I ended up enjoyed several other specialty drinks throughout the night. It got relatively busy in there but the bartenders were all super attentive and made amazing drinks. Happy hour ended at 7:00, but I made sure to order some honey habanero wings before the cutoff to enjoy the $2 discount. When I got home, I found that the wings were really tasty, but I felt sad that I didn't get some more in another flavor. I'll definitely know for next time. They better get used to me, because I will definitely be back for more drinks and definitely to grab something to go!

Yelp
Love a good night at Fuzzy! It's a unique scene but the drinks and food are really good! All of the staff have been friendly each time I've gone and are very attentive to big groups! The quesadillas and tachos are amazing. Quesadillas to go keep very nicely and don't get soggy. Parking is street parking only I believe, but there are always spots. Lucky to have this spot on Brookland Park Boulevard!

Yelp
Stopped into here before a pottery class and we loved everything about this place! From the funky decor on the walls, to the excellent staff and most importantly - the delicious food! My husband has been on the search for the best wing in Richmond and he said he finally found it! Flavorful, crispy, and not too saucy. The chicken sandwiches/biscuits sound amazing and almost everyone in the restaurant was ordering the nachos. They have a small stage and bands come play, they also have a pool table, pinball machines and creative beer/shot combos such as the "Colorado Kool-aid" which is a Coors Banquet and a shot of rum. They have great happy hour specials and there are so many things I want to try so we'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Yummm! I've been to Fuzzy Cactus a few times now but mostly just to get their cocktails, but I went last week with a friend and ordered food and it was delicious! We ordered the carnitas quesadilla and the fried chicken nachos and they were both so good! Great flavors and good portions for the both of us to share. The dipping sauces were tasty too. We also ordered the fuzzy bastard and the diamond dog and they were strong with cute decorations on them. So good! Will definitely be back soon!

Michael H.

Yelp
Great food. Great drinks. Great people. The live music, pinball, and vintage movies are a bonus.
google avatar

Tay L.

Yelp
Cool vibes only down side not many veggie options. The Mac and cheese is super yummy. Get into the groove and have a biscuit.

Lamar J.

Yelp
The chicken though!?! THE CHICKEN Y'ALL!!! Easily some of the best chicken in Richmond, and it's such a succulent surprise (alliteration) in a row of fantastic food finds on the North side. Seriously good!, if you thought "what about lee's?" I'm here to say it's BETTER! The wings of course are good as well and they often have a rotating sauce that's has been fun to try. Chicken and waffles (fire) totchos (FIRE) the elote rice (BRUH!!) They also have an inspired selection of drinks (rotating specials). The staff are always super welcoming and on top of things regardless of how busy it is. All of this in a heavy metal hideaway ambiance peppered with pinball machines. Ok I'm done

John P.

Yelp
Fuzzy Cactus advertised wing and beer specials for the Super Bowl so we decided to watch the game there. They didn't play the sound to the game and the TVs they did show the game on weren't very visible. They did not have any wings, despite advertising wing specials. They also didn't have many people working. There's no one to take orders at tables despite all the tables being full. They didn't seem to be very prepared.

Alex R.

Yelp
Classic hole in the wall with good service. Went here for drinks, they were really good. I'm looking forward to a return trip to try their food which has real good reviews on here. Get the fuzzy bastard for some similar to a Moscow mule but much better. Happy hour ends at 7.

Yelp
To preface, I love the fried chicken at Fuzzy Cactus. I think the flavor is great and the cook has been wonderful, BUT the last two times I've ordered, the pieces are tiny and do not resemble actual thighs or breasts. It looks like they've cut the pieces in half to cook them. Just be aware that the "half bird" they advertise on the menu is not actually half of a bird. I used to get takeout (probably a year ago) and order the same thing and had actual pieces of chicken.
google avatar

Heather M.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere! Friendly and attentive staff! While the food was delicious it was slightly overpriced in my opinion. It was very tasty!
google avatar

Nikki J.

Yelp
Oh I'm so happy i finally tried this place. So good! I called them to order for delivery. It was quick and easy, and the delivery itself took maybe 30mins. I ordered a chicken box & a prickly pear margarita. Chicken box: the chicken was delicious. juicy, crispy. It wasn't super flavorful but that didn't stop my from devouring it. The biscuit was really good too & the brown sugar butter was the perfect addition. Elote rice: this was my fav of the meal! It was savory and the flavors from the corn and sauce paired so good with the rice. Prickly pear marg: this was also yummy. I'm typically not a fan of pear flavors but this worked well.
google avatar

Amanda P.

Yelp
Not enough food for the price but liked the quality. Server was nice but had a check issue. We asked about the price of something before ordering it and were charged different than what we were told. When asked they said they made the mistake when we initially asked, but they would only split the price difference (even though it was their mistake). The chicken and waffles were best thing we got. Wings were good. There was a brunch taco thing that was good, but very small. Got a frozen margarita ice pop and it was not good. Three of us tried it and no one liked it. We threw it out. Covid: We sat outside. Waitress was masked.

Yelp
I have been here twice now and really enjoy the atmosphere, it's not too crowded, the decor is really fun and quirky. They have pretty decent drink deals on Wednesday Thursday and Friday. As a vegetarian they have two different options and I have tried both of them, although I think it is a rotating menu. The food is okay from the vegetarian perspective. Seems like the meat options are probably better, and according to my meat eating husband they are quite good. Fun little place that's gives a very Richmond hipster experience. Also their customer service is off the charts, very attentive and check on the tables regularly.

Yelp
I was trepidatious about coming to the Fuzzy Cactus because of the "gun signs" outside the plain dark building and it's in a bit of a sketchy neighborhood, but once we got inside, we kinda dug the vibe there. Just goes to show you, don't judge a bar by its cover. Parking can be a tad "prickly" but after we circled the block a few times, we found a nearby spot. Inside is a funky 60's/70's rock atmosphere wIth disco balls, strobe lights, psychedelic streamers, macrame wall hangings, black velvet paintings, and lots of kitschy décor and a big portrait of Elvis! The retro Formica tables were cool and there was plenty of seating. The open floor plan made it a comfortable spot to have a few drinks and play a couple games of pool, which we did. I had a ginger hard seltzer which was tangy and cold! My homies had a margarita served in a cute cactus glass, the beer and shot specials, and some Coors. Our server, Mel, was super sweet and she kept us well watered throughout our stay. You had to refill you water from an igloo cooler which was kind of weird. We also had some chips and salsa which came out warm and crispy. The music was obnoxiously loud, and not really my taste. But we were out bar hopping tonight and this was a groovy little pit stop!

M M.

Yelp
Great service! The food was tasty. Pinball machines were a hit with the teens. They have a change machine. Full bar. Bonus - the music was at a level where we could hear one another as we chatted. Recommend as a fun option. The menu had options but was not overwhelming. We will be back!
google avatar

Ruchi D.

Yelp
Love going to the fuzzy cactus for happy hour and for their great bar. My favorite cocktail is the daquerie. The vegetarian friendly menus is also a plus
google avatar

Yuri C.

Yelp
We love this place. Sure it's within walking distance to us so that helps, but we love that we can go in for few games of pool and have cheap drinks and food. We always have the beer and whiskey and nachos. The other patrons are always nice and the staff is amazing! Shot out to Mel!
google avatar

Kristen B.

Yelp
Neat spot, unlike any other I've been to in Richmond. It definitely felt like a true rock-n-roll bar, complete with the art, music, and vintage feel alike. Although there was classic rock playing while we were there (great tunes), the art/decor get more reminiscent of grunge/ alt rock than classic. Complete with a billiard table, an arcade game, and some overall retro items (like an 80s tv), they definitely nailed the vintage styling. The brunch menu was delicious - highly recommend the fruit salad (very fresh and great quality) and the brown sugar butter on the homemade biscuits. The original Bloody Mary was also very good!
google avatar

Wolf P.

Yelp
Really cool spot that's under the radar. They have live music shows, happy hour specials and the brunch is so good. It's nice to find a new spot in Richmond for brunch that switches it up. They have a fried chicken sandwich with bacon that's wedged b/t a waffle that is out of this world. On another note, I've tried the fried chicken 3 times which is absolutely delicious, however 2 out of 3 times I had to send it back bc it was undercooked. Overall, still a pretty awesome place to go for drinks, cool music, friendly vibes and good brunch.
google avatar

Shelley B.

Yelp
Cool dive bar in Brookland Park area. Drinks are strong and tasty. Kitschy decor, fun vibe. Had the green salad with fried chicken. Didn't amaze me but sufficed. My friend had a quesadilla she said was good. But honestly, the stars are for the shining light that is our server/bartender, Mel. She was a breathe of fresh air and I'd literally spend all my money here just to hear her say "Let's do it". She's adorbs.
google avatar

Robin N.

Yelp
I love this place. Today I had a cutlet sandwich w Buffalo sauce and brown sugar- The Sis. Sorry no picture. I ate it too quickly for that. Ok next update. My son and his girlfriend and I went yesterday and again over the top and impressed. Pictures this time. Which includes the vegan Chihuahua hot dog and the vegan rancheros. Also the vegan buffalo cauliflower bites were to die for and it's hard to find a place with vegan ranch sauce. Sorry I missed the pic of the buffalo cauliflower. We could not help ourselves.
google avatar

Monika D.

Yelp
My favorite bar in Richmond the bartenders are awesome! Great live music al the time. 10/10
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
Came for the Hot Tomato Summer - stayed for the vibe !!! Beetlejuice on the vintage tv (like the big ones teachers rolled in on carts in the 90's), rock n roll music, and what looks to be a dry cleaner conveyor belt with colored lights. Service was fast and friendly. Thoroughly enjoyed my fried green tomato biscuit with slaw (and duke's, of course). The grilled cheese with avocado and tomatoes was also primo!!! Really great spot
google avatar

Yelp
4.3 For most, this is a sketch neck of the woods but it's surely taking a turn. Our first time stopping in and the place is still only 6months young and I've heard great things. My better half and I had brunch at the bar. We were greeted and served by friendly folk. I wondered about the Texas theme out loud and some nice dude behind the bar being productive and staying busy happened to here my inquisition and filled me in. That random dude was the owner. I appreciated the tid bit and the suggestions he gave on the menu. "Get a piece of chicken." I did. I had The Bud, a fucking delicious chicken biscuit. Pictures I'd seen depicted a large piece of chicken and a small biscuit. This was exactly that. I was concerned about how the biscuit would hold up to the chx and it passed with flying colors. It stayed in one piece without crumbling until the last bite. The shit was tender, juicy, flaky, buttery, spicy, etc. I expected it to be good, but it was awesome. I inhaled it in two minutes. The grits ruled. Solid beer choices. The nice feller who owned this joint recommended getting a piece of chicken before leaving, I got a chicken breast. WOW, best fried chicken in Richmond?! Probably so and I'm not being sarcastic one bit. My waistline is going to grow a size or two over the coming years and I don't care. This spot will do well. I can't wait to check out a show. See y'all soon!

Em W.

Yelp
nice atmosphere, food was really good and exceeded expectations. Got a cheese quesadilla, chicken quesadilla, chicken tenders. The salad was huge and looked like it had good portions of each topping. Loved that they had a pool table.

Katie P.

Yelp
Fun and addictive games lol but not so big on the nachos. Sorry. I would still recommend this place.
google avatar

Emily G.

Yelp
Great spot for Northside! We love walking here from the neighborhood. They have two patio tables, which are great during COVID times, and well spaced seating inside. Other things we love here: the happy hour, the live music, brunch, and the homemade salsa.
google avatar

Dusty C.

Yelp
Two words: shag mullets. More words: great chips and salsa. And the margaritas are good too.
google avatar

Austin M.

Yelp
There has been only one time I have been here, so I do not have a fully grasp on all aspects of this location, but I had a positive experience here. We came here on a weeknight to enjoy some drinks, it is within walking distance so that's nice. There was a band playing but they didn't go on until late, and we had left by then. There are cocktails, beers, and other drinks here, as well as food. The menu is kind of small, but I appreciate this because it shows they are trying to make the food really good, and focus on a smaller menu. It did take awhile to get a drink at the bar, but this wasn't a major issue since we weren't in any hurry. You order food and drinks at the bar and can sit at a high top table. I am interested to come back and check it out again, the beers we had were cheap, from the bottle, and did I say cheap? I would be willing to try the food the next time I come, but one in our party said the chicken was really good.

Ashley W.

Yelp
Check your tabs!!! They will rip you off. The short server last night with the tube top tried to put more on our tab then what we ordered. $75 more. The other bartender who served us " fixed" it. $44 and we left a $10 tip only for them to still steal and charge us $75 after we left. This isn't a random error it's just straight up theft.
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
Fuzzy Cactus just opened and it is pretty nice. They are trying to be a bar and a live music venue. I understand that there are cover charges when bands are playing. The interior is attractive with a cool vibe. It's a lot nicer inside than any other bar or restaurant in Battery Park. They have a pool table in the corner. This place is more of a bar than a restaurant. They have a very limited menu, and they don't provide table service. Your get your own water of an Igloo water cooler in the corner and order your food and drinks at the bar. The food offerings consist of fried chicken, chicken wings, dirty rice, nachos, and salads. They have a few craft beers on tap, with a selection of cheap bottled beer including Lone Star. Overall, I was very impressed. The prices were very affordable and the food was good. I would definitely recommend checking it out.

Martin E.

Yelp
Love this place... not my normal watering hole but staff and patrons were super cool. I'd go back !!! I enjoyed it.
google avatar

Elle F.

Yelp
This place is such a gem in the neighborhood! The chicken sandwiches are all delicious and the vegan queso is something I dream about because it's so good! I like that I can get anything from a cheaper draft beer to a gorgeous custom cocktail-- there's a drink for every mood and occasion. Pair all drinks with nachos! You won't regret it. Don't get me started on brunch... It's so good! All the staff are cool and really nice. Looking forward to our next visit :)

Yelp
A haiku: Best bar in Richmond Get a Mango White Claw, Rick and eat some chicken.

Joseph P.

Yelp
This place is unabashedly the place it is. It's a rocker bar that has shows and serves great drinks. If a beer and a shot is something you like to see at a bar, this place is a must go. If you want reasonably priced interesting bar food, this place is a must go. If you go to this place for what it is, you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Ryan F.

Yelp
This is 100% our neighborhood go to. The fried chicken is bonkers and I (a meat and cheese loving dude) can vouch for the deliciousness of their vegan queso. The cocktails are interesting and delicious and it's a cool/unique environment. Can't wait for music to return.
google avatar

Thomas P.

Yelp
Amazing food, perfectly crafted drinks, tip top service, great vibe, always an enjoyable time coming here. Can't wait for their live music to come back.

Megan B.

Yelp
Best place I know. Great atmosphere. Could be here all day.The staff is so kind and attentivie. Only place I'd recommend.

Yelp
Great Music, Friendly Staff, Reasonable Food and Drink Specials. Topo Chico and lime.
