9 Must-Try Bakeries in New Haven, Connecticut

"German-style whole grain loaves line the wall of G Cafe Bakery’s Orange Street location in the Ninth Square historic downtown district. Indoor seating offers filtered light through wide windows, and outdoor seating spills into brick- and mural-decked Pitkin Plaza, where the cafe sits between art and gift shops Kiara Matos Ceramics (Matos is a co-owner of G) and Strange Ways. Take home a fitness loaf, brimming with a variety of seeds and grains, or stay for a European-inspired sweet treat of Linzer torte or gateau Basque. Elsewhere in New Haven, find a miniature version of the cafe inside Tweed airport and the newest location on Chapel Street, neighboring legendary head shop and boutique Group W Bench." - Stasia Brewczynski

3.5 / 5.0 - I’ve dined here a couple of times for breakfast / brunch. They have a spacious indoor dining area, as well as some tables outside, for a nice day out. It’s counter service and they will call you name out once your food is ready. Especially for the price, the avocado toast has very little avocado on it and the croissant didn’t taste very fresh. I’ll have to try some other items on the menu.

I feel like Goldilocks would have had a field day here because everything’s just right. G cafe where do I begin the Cronut no words honestly speechless. My daughter and I crave this croissant donut almost daily. Her other favorite is the Pain Au Chocolat which has put all others to shame in her eyes. The flavors are light delicate not too sweet. Perfect ratio honestly craveworthy. Leilani(I think I spelled it right ) always makes our experience so lovely. One of the sweetest servers. She really cares for her customers. Thank you for getting to know us remembering the details people often forget you are a rare gem we are blessed to have met her. Love from Brittany & Peyton.

Google
Beautiful place for eating lunch or working over coffee or tea. So pleasantly decorated with comfy booths and ton of natural sunlight. Outdoor seating available in the summer. Cute way of serving pastries (see picture). Free wifi. The curly haired woman at the register was welcoming and chatty. My chocolate banana loaf was delicious but a little pricy and the teas they carry from Open Door are great.

The ambiance at G Cafe Bakery is warm and inviting. As a local, I appreciate the friendly surroundings and the cool vibes. It’s a great spot to unwind, catch up with friends, or simply enjoy some quality alone time. The breads at G Cafe are reminiscent of the loaves crafted by skilled European bakers. My favorite is the Jewish rye. It’s the real deal—dense, flavorful, and with that unmistakable crust. Whether you’re making a classic deli sandwich or simply enjoying it with butter, it pairs well with every topping. If you’re a Yale student seeking a cozy study spot or a curious foodie exploring New Haven, this bakery won’t disappoint. So, grab your textbooks, order a croissant, and soak in the Yale spirit at G Cafe!

We stopped in for breakfast on a trip to the area and this café was definitely a highlight of the whole week! The cashier and the barista were both so friendly and helpful, answering all our questions! Even gave my daughter some free stickers! But also everything we had was so delicious. Beautiful presentation. Great flavors and textures. Still fondly remembering that cronut! What a delightful shop!

We had planned to enjoy brunch at this bakery but ended up eating a chocolate croissant and juggling a cup of chai while walking through the streets of New Haven, due to the lack of available seating. This is not the ideal way to start my review, but I don't want it to overshadow my experience. The chai was simply delightful, exceptionally frothy, at the perfect temperature, and an exquisite blend that enhanced the flavor of their bakery items. The bakery products themselves were exceptional. The chocolate croissant boasted great chocolate and a perfectly crispy, flaky texture. Despite being larger than the typical French croissant, its authenticity and flavors were outstanding, making it one of the best I've ever tasted. The donut, with its rich chocolate cream, was enjoyable as well. As for the almond croissant, the exterior was nice, but the filling was somewhat too liquid and bland for my taste. Overall, this bakery embodies the old-world charm that fits quite well into a city filled with so much (neo-)Gothic architecture. Reflecting on it, it's not surprising that the bakery was so busy we couldn't find a seat.

Google
Stopped by G Cafe Bakery for some pastries and a sandwich. The pastries were amazing, really nice selection. My only regret is I couldn't try all of them, we'll be going back to try more. The breakfast sandwiches are very nice if you want something more substantial than a pastry, the were really packed with flavor, and will hold you over for a while. The lattes were also very good. You'll definitely want to try to go at an off peak time because the line can get pretty long. G Cafe is absolutely worth it.

Delicious cronuts. Avocado toast lacked seasoning but I added eggs on top which were perfectly poached. The large coffee I ordered was actually a small size anywhere else. I can't wait to try more of their pastries.

Yelp
I appreciate and love the consistency at the G Café bakery on Orange Street. From the gentleman at the register to the quality and quantity of fresh food, everything is welcoming and delicious. The ingredients are top quality, and the finished presentation is appetizing and healthy. We had avocado toast with a nice garnish selection of cheese, tomato and greens. One of us ordered poached eggs and the other had scrambled and both were accompanied by a good size serving of bacon. Kudos to the chef as everything was served hot and cooked to perfection. We couldn't leave without also purchasing a cranberry walnut bread and a brownie. This is a well organized, professional establishment with the WOW factor that is a joy to support. Keep up the great work!

Yelp
ORIGIN: Christian Fedora and Andrea Corazzini opened their first cafe in Branford, expanding to several locations since, including this one in New Haven. LOCATION: This cafe is located in downtown New Haven in the ground floor of the historic Palladium Building, with a quiet outdoor courtyard that is perfect on warm days. CONCEPT: G Cafe brings European baked goods to Connecticut, as well as well-executed versions of American classics, such as brownies and cronuts. EXPERIENCE: G Cafe is the kind of bakery for which you feel compelled to return to try all it offers. TIPS: Olive bread is available on Saturdays and can't be missed. German Stollen is prepared and wrapped in paper and ribbons in December... perfect holiday house gift.

Yelp
I'm pretty much obsessed with G cafe and this Orange Street location is hands down my favorite one! The ambiance is so nice here and the staff members are always so friendly and warm. This location is pretty spacious with plenty of table tops and high top counter space to get work done or grab a bite with friends. I also love all the plants and decor at this location. It gives the place such a fun feel that goes perfectly well with the overall atmosphere. It's such a cute place to visit and conveniently located right in downtown New Haven. The pastries are delicious at all the G Cafe locations, but I recently tried the pumpkin bread muffin at this location and it was moist, flavorful and so so good! I got the muffin toasted and it was truly such a treat! It made getting work done a little more enjoyable.

Yelp
This cafe is one of my fav's in New Haven! The owner are lovely, community minded decent people and that is important to me when I am choosing restaurants to support regularly. Great coffee! They keep it fresh all day. My goto Americano with hazelnut syrup and room for cream. I attended a function for a local nonprofit and the freshly baked breads, pastries, and veggie quiche are most of my hard choices! I have tried all of those over time and endorse all! There is a great breakfast and lunch menu. This is a real gem in downtown New Haven! I love that the space has indoor and outdoor seating options! I love that their are enough outlets to encourage getting some work done with a great cup of coffee and a treat.

Yelp
1/1 Ambience; 1/2 Food; 1/1 Service; 1/1 Value The cafe is lively and warm, with a very New England college town charm. The cafe was busy on a weekend morning, but the staff was friendly and kept the line moving quickly. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. There is an extensive and impressive selection of pastries and breads. My friend and I shared a pain au chocolate, a slice of the gateau basque, a coffee and hot chocolate. The beverages were fresh and the pain au chocolate was nice and flaky, although there was very little chocolate inside. It was the first time trying gateau Basque for the both of us, so we don't have a point of comparison. It was super dense, the custard had a mild sweetness, and there was a warm aftertaste due to the spices in the pastry. If it wasn't shared between two people, it is unlikely either of us would have finished the slice for breakfast. Overall, this was a nice, filling and satisfying breakfast with quality foods and beverages!

Yelp
Lots of seating area both inside and outside. Unfortunately does not have WiFi. But great spot to meet with a friend or do some reading and disconnect from the internet. Service was great and coffee was delicious. Loved the decor as well

Yelp
my first time trying a square croissant, but it was okay. underwhelming because it tasted like it had been sitting out for quite a bit, but the vibes in cafe were really nice, a lot of seating for both studying and chatter

Yelp
Great coffee. Today got bacon egg on a brioche. Excellent. They also have amazing pastries and an assortment of fresh breads that look mouthwatering assuming you're a bread junkie, like me. Also had a pastry. Why not?
google avatar

Yelp
Best cronut ever!! Great atmosphere! Even the other customers were awesome. Will definitely make this a weekly stop. Got some sliced bread - Josephine? (the whole wheat sour dough)
google avatar

Leyang Z.

Yelp
Had lunch there. Ordered a chicken sandwich and a cup of soup of the day. Neither dishes were satisfactory. Let's start with the good things. First, service was pretty quick even if the restaurant was over half-full. Besides, their bread was amazing; the (whole wheat?) sourdough was so delicious and authentic that I eventually put the stuff in the sandwich onto it lol. Then the disappointment. The chicken sandwich was OKay but they put dressing on it which I opted out. The soup of the day was said to be lentil soup, but somehow it turned out to be black bean soup. Moreover it was too thick, almost baked beans.

Yelp
Great ambiance, great coffee, great cronut! We stopped by the town to take Amtrak. We happened to find this little local gem. I got an oat milk latte and raspberry cronut. It was a lovely quick breakfast.

Yelp
I will never go to this G Cafe ever again. To start we were cut in line and not a single staff member said anything. When we received our drinks my partner asked which one was which and the barista was unbelievably rude by giving a short snippy answer. To top it all off we sat down next to a large group that had taken extra chairs for their party. My partner and I sat down next to each other on the same side of two tables already put together. A staff member asked if he could split out for another group coming in, we said of course and split the tables for the other party. He then ONLY grabbed a chair for the other party leaving my partner standing. We were asked multiple times to move around to accommodate additional people while others were left alone. Mind you, we are people of color and I had a broken wrist. Never. Again. I would give 0 stars if it was an option. Oh and the matcha sucks.

Yelp
Of all the spots in New Haven I've seen, I have been here enough times that I think I can give a review here. What I will say is that this place is a very busy cafe, so if you plan to eat here, you might be hard-pressed to find a seat unless you are coming the minute this opens. While it's open till 4 each day, their kitchens also close at 2 from what I read once, so keep that in mind too. From what I have seen, service and ambiance are pretty good. Just this morning when I was having breakfast, I watched one employee clean the table top after a trio of girls left and it was something proper. My servers have been nice today and last Sunday when I lunched here, and the music they play is pretty good (although I do wish Shazam worked here so I knew what they were playing half the damn time). Now for their food options. I will start off by saying their coffee is pretty good. Don't matter if you get the Rocket Fuel or their Mocha. You won't be disappointed there. Also, they do good with brunch. I had a grilled cheese here last Sunday that was pretty tasty. If there is one thing I would NOT recommend, it's their French toast, which I had this morning. Now, the fruit that came along with it was good, but the bread that fruit was on you could taste that the egg had not been thoroughly cooked. When you serve me French toast, I prefer NOT to taste the egg if it can be helped, especially when I paying $12.50 plus tax for that alone. BUT you know what's good bread here? Buy a loaf and bring it home with you! I got a loaf of their Jewish Rye, and while I admit I should have asked if they could slice the bread, I'm actually thankful I didn't and just sliced it myself this afternoon when I got home. A sizable crumb fell off as it was my first time slicing bread in my almost 33 years alive, and I got to try it. BEST BREAD EVER! While the French Toast did cost you a star, I will definitely order bread from you again and SOON!

Yelp
Nice cafe to stop for breakfast! Some indoor and outdoor seating. We sat outside and enjoyed it. Lots of good coffee options and some nice pastries as well. I really liked the feel of the coffee shop, very warm and welcoming.

Yelp
I stop in on Saturdays for a crème croissant and caffe mocha on my way to work. Everyone working there is friendly and knowledgeable. It's a great place and smells so good!

Yelp
Perfect cafe to sit for a while and soak in whatever media youre into, I loved sitting down and reading while being able to set aside my phone and charge it while taking advantage of the free wifi! The cold brew coffee is something so simple yet easy to mess up and G café just hits the mark with it so effortlessly; sadly there isn't much connect with the baristas, they weren't really friendly or inviting to talk to and that's where I lose the good feeling for this spot! (Transactions seemed like they were visibly causing them pain lol) Lots of seating! Very crafty drinks!
google avatar

Yealim K.

Yelp
This place is very cute and nice near downtown. They have a nice patio which is dog friendly. I got croffin (croissant muffin) filled with vanilla custard and it was delicious. Also their latte was good. Highly recommend for brunch or bakery.

Yelp
just your miami girl coming by on a college tour! since im here, i might as well try things i never have tried over in miami and omg this zucchini bread was AMAZING! also shout out to the friendly staff! they handled all 40 of us well and the inside is very nicely put together and would be a perfect place to grab a quick something with your friends or have a nice and tasty breakfast :) would totally recommend!

Yelp
I love the blueberry squares and the relaxed atmosphere. Parking an be a problem so get there early.
google avatar

Rladbwls K.

Yelp
pragel! nice solid harder shell, thinner bagel overall. got the egg and cheese inside. pastries were ok, gateau basque was thick and felt a little display-case-y, probably a bit too much for one sitting. more than food though--ambiance is so lovely. Decor somehow keeps it feeling classy but also vintage but also cozy. Come when the weather is nice and sit outside in their little courtyard, or grab a coffee chat/work away in their airy, spacious, high-ceilinged space inside.

David C.

Yelp
The baked goods are fantastic but very pricy. 1 almond croissant, 1 blueberry , $11.95. I see a picture on here that shows the almond croissant for $3.65. What year is that from?

Yelp
I recently checked off CT Bucket List restaurant G Cafe and Bakery. G has been all over my Instagram Feed with beautiful cronuts, sandwiches, pastries and desserts. After visiting and trying a number of things, I'm a big fan. G is located on a chill section of Orange Street near the federal courthouse in New Haven. The inside highlights include light wood floors and tables, white brick walls, huge windows, and red and cream seats. It was a great place to enjoy food and talk with new friends. The food was great across the board. Over the course of two days, I tried (1) a Cronut, (2) an almond croissant, (3) a bacon, onion and tomato individual sized quiche, (4) an oversized baguette type bread that has a name I missed, and (5) a loaf of dense Vollkorbrot bread. This was my first proper Cronut. It was pleasantly dense and the dark pink glaze tasted like berries. The almond croissant had perfect texture, appearance and flavor. It was definitely one of the better croissants I've had in CT. I air-fried the quiche the day after I bought it, and it was still outstanding. I could really taste the buttered onions. The bread was so good and crusty, that it became the focal point of dinner along with some leftover holiday spreads. The Vollkorbrot bread was the perfect vehicle for an old school hors d'oeuvres. I can't say enough good things about G Cafe. Five Stars
google avatar

Kristy V.

Yelp
The food was delicious! I got the yogurt parfait, a cronut, and tried some of the avocado toast, I would highly recommend. The portions were big. The coffee and matcha were fresh. The customer service was friendly and patient. The cafe was clean with an upscale aesthetic, perfect for catching up on some reading/work, or meeting up with a friend.
google avatar

Yelp
I went to this bakery today with a friend! I ordered a seasonal latte (gingerbread flavored) and a blueberry muffin. I was pleased with both items, as well as the service that was provided! This place has gorgeous aesthetics. I can't wait to come back again.
google avatar

Yelp
G Cafe is my go to for coffee and breakfast on my way into work, and it's great to sit and eat at on a day off. The fresh bakery items are amazing- from the sandwiches to the sweets it's all super good. My favorite is the everything croissant- either by it's self or as a sandwich. A super unique item as I haven't seen that kind of croissant anywhere else in the area. There's a wide selection of really good drinks as well.
google avatar

Hannah K.

Yelp
Great great great breakfast/brunch/lunch spot! They were a little overwhelmed and understaffed but everyone working was so nice! They messed up and brought me the wrong sandwich and let me keep both when they brought out the right one. Both were delicious!
google avatar

Sophia K.

Yelp
I love this place!! I go to the one in Branford typically, but both have same quality of food/ service. I thought it was weird that they didn't have bagels at first, but once I tried their "pragel" I was hooked. Coffee is excellent, and every single breakfast item i've tried is just so good. Their lox & salmon with scallion cream cheese is a MUST. The service is always good & it's a nice take out Sunday morning breakfast spot.
google avatar

Jinny Y.

Yelp
The ol' G IS SOOOOOO good and yet its off the menu! Give it a try today! It's got that perfect not spicy chili kick that is very addicting. Also the latte was solid and the vibe is very work or conversation friendly.

Yelp
Restaurants inside Luxent Hotel. Very nice ambiance. Clean and the food was delicious. Nea was very nice.

Yelp
Still one of my favourite places in NHV!! They also have a new location on Chapel and Park that is smaller with less seating but still has their amazing pastries and baked goods

Yelp
19 Jan. 2024 We have been several times to this lovely, neighborhood bakery/cafe in the East Rock neighborhood of New Haven. The coffee is delicious. The pastries are tasty. The music is present but not overwhelming. It's relatively spacious and well-lit. However . . . I was there yesterday or the day before and observed an older gentleman -- tall, thin, white, grey hair and wearing a white Apple Watch -- doing two things which were unhygienic and deeply off putting. The patron before me in line ordered a loaf of bread sliced. The above-referenced man handled the bread for slicing without gloves. He had a hard time getting the bread into the paper bag after slicing it and he was very aggressively handling the bread. Very unsavory and unappetizing. Also, a few minutes later, I saw the same man transfer cookies and other pastries with his bare hands from one tray to another, consolidating them. Last, most pastries are behind a glass, which is a good idea. But there are several that are uncovered and on the top shelf. The owners should put glass covers or domes over them. It's very unhygienic and unappealing to have them exposed that way. To conclude, any time a patron asks for bread or slicing of bread, the bread should be handled with gloves. Similarly, everyone who works there should use gloves or tongs when handing pastries or other foods. Last, bare hands should never be used to handle baked goods. Ever. Gross. I would like to be able to return to this neighborhood cafe, but not until they adopt more hygienic practices. If they do this out in the open and in front of customers, I would hate to see what may be happening out of sight in the kitchen.

Homa H.

Yelp
Coffee tastes terrible. The manager is so rude. He keeps track of people who work and asked them to leave after an hour. It's used to be at least good for work, with bright space it had. But the new owner ruined it.

Yelp
Made our way down to new haven this weekend to try out G Cafe for ourselves after it has been recommended by many other foodies on Instagram. We all got some different pastries, mine was the cinnamon roll and it was delicious, just wish it was warmed up a bit! The decor inside is so cozy and is a great place to catch up with friends! - Cassie AKA @eatwithcmg on instsgram

Yelp
I loved the number of options on the menu! All of the baked goods looked so good in the case and I just wanted to order everything. We ordered the lox pragel and brioche French toast, which came out to about ~$20. Lox Pragel: I've never had a pretzel bagel before and it definitely was worth the experience. It tasted almost like a scooped out, extremely toasted bagel if that makes sense. There was a decent amount of lox on it and overall, a solid choice! Brioche French toast: I'm still not really sure how I feel about this. The toast was quite soggy and mushy, and super sweet. There was also mold on the raspberries. I don't think this was worth trying to be honest. The atmosphere is very nice! It's definitely quite aesthetic and clean inside. They do limit your time per table so keep that in mind.
google avatar

Jasmeet M.

Yelp
Great raspberry cronut! The salad had a bit of an extra crunch possibly a little sand or dirt. Things do happen so I would go back. Especially for their baked items!
google avatar

Allison C.

Yelp
What a lovely bakery! We were really impressed by their freshly baked bread, and the pastries were great. The Ol'G breakfast sandwich was flavorful and filling, and the avocado toast was very fresh! The staff was pleasant and welcoming, especially Tyler, the manager. They were busy, but they handled it well and got everyone's food to them in a timely manner. We would definitely visit again!
google avatar

Lauren D.

Yelp
I've returned for the first time in 3 years and confirmed my original experience of not worth it. Today I ordered ahead of time because I remembered the long wait. It was ready upon pickup so that was the plus. However the food itself is one again very disappointing. I got the chicken panini which just comes with grilled chicken fresh mozzarella and spinach. There is NO flavor whatsoever to chicken. The spinach is just dry spinach. Luckily I had them add tomato and onion otherwise it would've been even plainer. The chicken also was a suspect color- on the verge of being under cooked and tough. And for 11 bucks I could get way better elsewhere. Sucks because I want to like it but just nope.

Thomas L.

Yelp
Prompt friendly service. Delicious breads and pastries. Spacious, clean, bright. Convenient location with a variety of seating options.
google avatar

Kim B.

Yelp
I ordered a $33 worth of bakery goods and a whole loaf of bread honestly wasn't worth it. I could've went to Costco and saved a lot of money on bake goods and most importantly taste bye gosh the flavor, (not saying I go to Costco just a reference) . It wasn't worth the hype and the aesthetic really just was geared to honestly a certain type of people did not feel welcoming or comfortable . Definitely won't be going back.
google avatar

Rachel F.

Yelp
This place is so good. The atmosphere and the people were so nice. The food was good, the bread was very delicious. The avocado toast was incredible and the presentation was very good as well. The french toast tasted a little weird with a weird aftertaste. The drinks were the best you could get. Over all would definitely go back
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
What an awesome place! It's super cozy and has delicious pastries and breakfast. Will definitely need to go back for lunch. The manager Tyler helped us pick some awesome pastries which were all delicious (do yourself a favor a get a cronut!!). I had the The Ol'G Breakfast Sandwich with egg, goat cheese, roasted peppers, and chorizo and loved it. Plus the seasonal drinks were awesome too, loved my apple cider chai!
google avatar

Yelp
We have come here a few times, but after today we will not be coming back. We placed an online order under my husband's name for two identical lattes for pick up during a morning break. When we arrived, I went inside while my husband waited outside with our two dogs. They only made one drink and refused to make the other one after I told them they didn't complete the order we requested. I left with the one drink, and my husband had to go back with the online receipt in his hand to prove that our $14 order was for two drinks. I hope they enjoy the 20% tip we left them when we placed the online order, it will be the last cent this business receives from us. The food and drinks are fine but not worth the service.

Yelp
Good for coffee/ grabbing a quick bite, not good for studying. Got an americano and almond croissant. They were good! However, there is no WiFi here, contrary to what the Yelp page says. Seating is also limited.
google avatar

Yelp
Love the bakery. Breads are fantabulous!! Breakfast sandwiches and coffee give you just the right pick me for that early morning ventures to work. Staff are helpful in all locations and will take the time to make suggestions.

Brown S.

Yelp
Stopped her on a family recommendation today with my wife. We got the super salad, and the half soup/half sandwich (chicken tortilla soup/ham sandwich. We were pretty disappointed overall. If you leave price and size out of the equation, it was "just ok". The half sandwich was almost nonexistent, 1 slice of ham. Soup came out cold, and also about a 1/4 of a cup. The bread was good though, nice crust and good crumb. Salad was average in taste, and a decent size. For a $32 meal, we would not return here.

Yelp
MARVELOUS ! Petit-déjeuner typiquement français

Yelp
My son works here and brings home goodies from time to time! The donut blew my socks off and I usually do not eat donuts. They are just a touch sweet, not overbearing. The middle is so soft and the outside had a good crisp. Let's not forget the frosting! Wow.... All of the breads are delicious and the everything croissant is genius!

Yelp
Great breakfast spot! Try the everything pragel (pretzel + bagel) with lox, spinach, tomatoes, onion and cream cheese! It was a great way to start my morning. Service was quick and they had a lot of other bakery and coffee options to try!
