Where to Celebrate Lunar New Year in Philly - Eater Philly

"You can also make your own: tteok is sold fresh and frozen year-round at H Mart and the rest of the ingredients can be found in non-Korean supermarkets. Cho recommends sourcing locally from Ga Yeon Rice Cake and JJ Mandoo, both located inside More Shopping Center in Elkins Park." - Diana Lu

The H Mart in Elkins Park PA is unique in that there are numerous other small businesses in the building. One of them is Ga Yeon Rice Cake! There are many many varieties of rice cake treats. The square has easy parking; though can get a bit busy on the weekend. I would say coming before noon is often a more pleasant experience. The shop takes credit card, the food the beautifully packaged and the price clearly labeled. I wouldn't say the customer service is super friendly but honestly I'm there for fresh products, not small talk. 🤷🏻‍♀️ So it doesn't bother me.

I only bought one box of rice cake with honey and sesame seed inside. Not only did my food have a hair inside of the unopened package, but the rice cake itself tasted extremely fishy and awful. It should not taste that way and it must be rotten or spoiled.

Discovered this place from a fellow foodie! If you come when they first open everything is still very very fresh and super soft and chewy. Never had any issues with them. The Ggul-tteok & yakbap is literally my favorite!

Heavenly taste with clean pure ingredients with beautiful appearance! There are so many different kinds of rice cakes, and I always find something new at every visit. The sesame barks are super with subtle sweetness and such a difference from factory made products! These sweets give healthy energy and pleasure, relaxation. Even therapeutic!

We recieved a beautiful assortment tray to celebrate our Korean Church 20th year anniversary. These rice cakes were so moist and you could really tell the ingredients were fresh. I am in heaven. I miss Korea so much and this is a slice of my Korean home to me. Thank you so much.🙏❤️

Google
This place rocks! I've been looking for a steam bun place but never found a good one, until I came across this place! All buns are fresh made in big steam pots. The buns are HUGE! The fillings are delicious, and they don't skim out on fillings like some places do. I need more places like this!! Give it a try. My personal fav is the Kimchi filling mandoo.

The female cashier or owner was very impolite. The worst part was rice cake got already hardened when I had one of them at home.Which means that they just keep selling left over product from previous day. Never go again.

Yelp
Came to Philly for a weekend trip and came across this cute little shop specializing in selling Korean rice cakes and desserts. This shop is located on the first floor right next to hmart. We've been looking for those huge long rice cakes for tteokbokki for the longest time and was so excited to finally find them here. We came near closing so there wasn't much selection and we got the last package of the long rice cakes so you know this place has to be good! The lady at the shop was so incredibly kind and sweet. She even gave us a whole pack of sweet korean rice cakes to try for free which was so generous of her. Her rice cakes are super fresh and also some of the best I've ever had. Also super reasonably priced at $6. For the amount you get- it's a steal! You can tell she put a lot of heart and effort into making them. I wish I could purchase these rice cakes all the time!

Yelp
Cute little shop inside a large HMart in Philly that sells Korean rice cakes and desserts! They have a large variety of rice cakes selections such as big, Tteokbokki rice cakes (Garaetteok?) and little colorful Korean rice cakes that are shaped into balls (Ggultteok?). I walked past it on my way to HMart but stopped by as I was about to leave around closing time and found that there very little selection left compared to earlier. The locals in the area probably beat me to it. Everything was so reasonably priced and great sizes and the lady in the shop was also really kind. I haven't found anything remotely close near me in New York City so I look forward to visiting again!

Yelp
What a charming little rice cake shop near the H-Mart in Elkins Park! I've stopped in multiple times to pick up some rice cakes as snacks or ingredients for cooking, and they're usually quite tasty. The people working there don't speak much English, but they're very friendly and sweet. Always a nice spot to stop by for some soft rice cake goodness!

Yelp
Such a sweet shop! Staff were friendly and the variety was wonderful. Everything was so chewy and lovely! I can see why they sell out regularly.

Yelp
FYI The rice cake shop and dumpling shop are 2 totally different stores in the HMart plaza. I don't think the dumpling shop is on Yelp. We travel from Allentown to get rice cake from here. Never had a bad batch of rice cake in the 5 years we've been coming here.

Yelp
Why do you delete my comment? These buns were bought at your store. It costs two dollars per bun. It's too expensive!

Yelp
I pass by this little traditional Korean sweets shop so often, but it's always closed by the time I make it up to the H-mart plaza. This weekend I had a big breakfast, but no lunch so I decided to head up to this area for an early dinner. Thanks to being thrown off my schedule, I was able to finally visit this shop! Since it was still almost closing time, the pickings were a little slim, but there were still several tasty options. I got some salty rice cakes (mugwort and regular) and some that were supposed to be filled with sesame. The shop keeper was very friendly and helpful when I asked her some questions about the differences between the different rice cake desserts. I loved the sesame filled one, but I was disappointed to discover that only the white ones in the pack seem to have sesame inside. The others appear to be white bean paste, which is good, but pales in comparison in flavor to the sesame. The salty rice cakes are simple, but I am in love with that chewy texture. They do take cards here, but there is a $10 minimum. I paid cash as 2 packs of the rice desserts were $8 total. They also carry the crispy sesame desserts here too. I will probably try some next time. Those are $10 a pack. I only tried traditional Korean sweets for the first time last year when I visited South Korea, but I wish I had sooner. If you like desserts that are less on the sweet side, I highly recommend you give it a go! I don't know another shop in the Philadelphia area that focuses on Korean traditional sweets. Hopefully I can catch them when they're open again and try some more goodies.

Yelp
Owner is so so rude and no consideration for the customers at all. Buy rice cake inside of the Hmart.
