Check Out the Menus for Portland Indonesian Restaurant Gado Gado | Eater Portland

"Opening this May in Northeast Portland’s Hollywood District, the Pisha-Dufflys are turning their wildly popular pop-up into a permanent Indonesian-Chinese restaurant that draws on Thomas Pisha-Duffly’s childhood in his half-Chinese mother’s Indonesian kitchen and his years cooking in New England. The menu mixes playful snacks and salads—like a pork-and-blood-sausage corn dog served with pickled chili, sweet soy, and “hoisinaise,” and a banana-leaf-smoked duck salad with citrus, lime leaf, and basil—with a long list of rice and noodle dishes, including a nasi goreng with house Chinese sausage and Dungeness crab (upgradable with an omelet topped with uni butter and American cheese), rendang spiced beef stew, a bakso noodle soup, and char keow teow. Chef’s specialties lean theatrical, from duck-and-foie wontons with mushrooms and dates to a whole duck roasted in banana leaf, a grilled stuffed quail with Dr. Pepper glaze, and an elaborate rijsttafel of aromatic rice, curries, sambals, and sides. The bar features lemongrass-laden gin cocktails, turmeric whiskey highballs, cocktails with fresh mango, jasmine tea, and pandan, an arak drink with jasmine tea and lemon oleo saccharine, and a booze-free “wonder juice” with turmeric, tamarind, and ginger." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

This place is an absolute gem!! The modern and relaxing atmosphere is a welcome respite from the lovely but bustling old world of Ghent. The namesake beer is unique and quite excellent, definitely worth enjoying. The menu has some solid traditional Indonesian classics, try the Satay! Ingredients in the food are clearly of really high quality, and the food is absolutely amazing, full of flavor. A must-go!

Cozy atmosphere and wonderful food. Highly recommended. The service goes above all though. We felt at home, we felt at ease. The guys are super friendly and welcoming. Please visit them, you won't be disappointed!

Lovely food and friendly staff. The ginger honey shrimps are amazing. The layered cake is dry.

This was my first experience with Indonesian kitchen. The loempia as a starter is not that special. The skewers of chicken and lamb are very tasty. I only miss a bit more vegetables together with the plain basmati rice. The restaurant is very cosy and the service is friendly. In general it is a very good restaurant but the portions may be a bit bigger for that price. A bit more variety in wines would be great as well. All bottles of wine are in the same price range.

Google
5 on 5, because the staff never fails to make us go out with the biggest smile. Both because they are so friendly and the food authentic. Love the place, thank you.

One of the best places to have dinner in Ghent. Great flavour and taste. I ordered chicken satay, beef korma and prawn chilli. Meat was tender and halal :)

After so many hours of traveling with flights from the US and a train from Amsterdam, I was so happy to find this wonderful restaurant right next to our Airbnb. The food was amazing and the service was friendly.

Yelp
This place was fairly easy to find, and about a 10 minute walk fro Gravensteen and the Marriott Ghent. The staff was super friendly, and helped walk me and my American visitors through the menu. There's a pretty big selection to choose from, and like most Indonesian places; food can be a bit spicy. As it was my first time (and not my last) I opted for what I will describe as the "Fixed Menu for 2". For a fixed rate, you get 4 entrees - which were pretty decent picks.

Yelp
I was soooo looking forward to an authentic Indonesian meal.... was disappointed. Restaurant has a nice ambience, friendly service, but food was "white-washed". The "grilled prawn" dish was actually a stir-fried shrimp dish with flavors more akin to a Chinese stir fried than Indonesian dish. So in short, if you have had good authentic south East Asian cuisine, this isn't the place for you. P.s. I understand they're busy, but it took almost an hour to get our food and no one had the courtesy to let us know about the long wait nor was apologetic about it.

Yelp
Found this place totally by accident. Best spring rolls I may have ever eaten. The friendliness is contagious, the stories flowed like the wine and the food was incredible. Totally a great find. Catch a tram, jump on a bike, call an Uber but check this place out.

Yelp
Indonesian food, Genthian mood. Realy cosy restaurant, very friendly waiters and amazingly tasty dishes. They even have the possibility to create your own cocktails. Pricing is really good, seeing the portions you're getting are actually pretty big. And if you can't finish your meal, just take the rest with you. If you're into Asian food and looking for a nice meal in a good atmosphere, Gado-Gado is the place to be. You won't regret it.

Yelp
Very friendly staff with great tasting dishes. Nice place in the medieval part of Ghent!
