8 Warming Soups to Try in Phoenix

"Gadzooks is a Phoenix-area favorite, and for good reason — its unpretentious, quick, and tasty every time. Next time you’re there, try the spicy potato and corn chowder; it’s a one-of-a-kind soup that’s filling and flavorful, with guajillo-braised short ribs, three types of peppers, veggies, lots of potato, and corn." - Jamie Killin

Yelp
This Gadzooks is down the road from ASU main campus. Ironic that the owners also went to Arizona State University. Gadzooks (an expression of surprise) is a fast-casual restaurant with a customizable menu. If you haven't been, think of an enchilada with as much toppings that you want stacked on top. You can choose from enchiladas, tacos, nachos, chopped salad or tortilla soup as your main entree. Tortillas are 100% corn or you can request the 50/50 (flour and corn). You can't go wrong with the chicken, braised short rib or the green chili pork shoulder meat selections. You can also add smashed jack potato, cornbread or spinach mushroom if you are going the vegetarian route. After picking your protein, you then go down the line and pick your fillings and toppings. You have a couple choices of cheeses and salsas to choose from. I recommend doing it Christmas style (red and green sauce) to get a nice photo op. They then fire up your creation in an oven for a bit and you are good to go. Main dishes will run you around $10. I usually get a bag of chips and salsa to go with my meal. I highly recommend the tortilla soup if you want something different. It is really good and you can customize that as well. Gadzooks always makes for a nice stop when I am in the mood for something quick and delicious.

Yelp
Visiting our son and he went and picked up food from Gadzooks for us. Hubby had the Tomatillo chicken with verde sauce and I had the Spinach & mushroom with red sauce. We agreed they were awesome! I know our son goes here because his wife has celiacs and is gluten free and Gadzooks has GF options. On this visit, there was some miscommunication and they were out of short rib.... This led to a longer wait and remaking of her food, but the manager stepped in and comped the entire order for his trouble. Great food and great customer service?? Win-win!

Yelp
Tacos, soups, stuffed poblanos, nachos, enchies - si, porfies! (That means, "yes, please!") My lovely colleague and I wanted a quick and casual bite before hosting a work event, and I was craving enchies. She rec'd Gadzooks for their build-your-own style of offerings. I got a stuffed poblano stuffed with chicken and topped with tomatillo salsa and some other fixings. My colleague got their chicken tortilla soup - and their famous pumpkin cookies. Their portions are huge; I could only finish half of my lunch plate. There are vegetarian and GF options.

Yelp
Food perfect Service spot on Atmosphere was clean and quiet. Just gave a review and we had a great experience. Would definitely come back again and we even had a Groupon.

Yelp
Are you looking for a dining place for comfort, tasty meals, and even better customer service?! Look no further, you've came to the right place! I was greeted by Mykeia & Vickie, who went over the menu in full. Their system is set up to where you can customize your tacos/enchiladas/or nachos...the placed into the oven. The food was great....but the customer service from staff members made the experience even better!!

Yelp
My partner and I went in around 1:30 on a Sunday afternoon. They were out of most things we asked for. The goat cheese, the potatoes, drinks, and even most of the soda fountain was empty. The kid working the line put cheese on our food without gloves on and there were piles of dirty steam trays next to the trays with food still in them. We should have walked out but we were hungry. I will never go back to this location. The one on Osborn Rd. In Phoenix is EXCELLENT!

Yelp
Picked up dinner with DoorDash. The customer tacos were tasty. The chicken tortilla soup was delicious. They ran out of the pumpkin cookies which were the top priority so that was disappointing. But overall it was a tasty dinner with no dessert.

Yelp
Stuffed poblanos are fantastic and short rib meat was so flavorful, but the service is terrible. Sadly, staff is so determined to be right when an error is made they can't professionally interact and resolve problems. Overly emotional and quick to anger people should not be in customer and food service and that was what we experienced here. I don't feel comfortable with them handling my food.

Ashlin C.

Yelp
I usually love gadzooks but their portion sizes on the sides are getting insanely small. This side is literally one bite! Not worth the money at all.

Yelp
Q: What do Europeans eat instead of enchiladas? A: 25.4 millimeter-iladas. Gadzooks! What a great enchilada! I've been hearing about Gadzooks forever because of Priscila A. so when she invited me to lunch, I took her up on the offer. An enchilada and some spicy cornbread was ordered along with a sangria (although I think they gave me a margarita instead but whatever). It was good! I got mine Christmas style with both red and green sauce and I really enjoyed myself. I've tried making enchiladas once before and let me tell ya, Gadzooks did a much better job! This location is great. It's spacious, clean, and they have a lot of parking. Stop in if you ever want enchiladas and soups!

Yelp
MUST VISIT. All I can say is delicious & great service. They are short staffed but served us with kindness, quickly and efficiently. I can't believe I just found out about this place - quality service, ingredients and food. Will definitely be back and recommend it to anyone in the area or visiting.
google avatar

Denise M.

Yelp
We came here for a quick dinner and were not disappointed. I like the way you can choose exactly how you want your enchiladas. The Gadzooks guy recommended the jack potatoes and the short rib together, and he did not steer is wrong. The nachos are kind of small, but the enchiladas were the perfect size.
google avatar

Kelly L.

Yelp
Service was fantastic. I was able to get in quick get my food and head back to the office so it's a great place to go to grab a quick lunch. Next time I come, however, I will be sure to order the pumpkin cookies as that looks like a delightful treat. Don't pass on the mashed Jack potato it's a must.

Yelp
This was my first visit to Gadzooks, holy smokes!!! I got two enchiladas, short rib and tomatillo chicken with red sauce and the spicy cornbread. Loralee got the salad with chicken, we split the chips and guacamole. It was all so good!!! I can't wait to go back and try the rest of the meats. I also want to try the famous Festival Taco.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is ok but it's all the same. No variety at all and expensive. Service is nice though.

Yelp
Here on a Thursday evening at 6:30. There is only one person working here and she is AMAZING. She is huddling like no other The food is excellent

Tib J.

Yelp
We've been here twice, and it was excellant both times!! The owner (or manager?) is so awesome!! I told her I don't eat meat and then I just let her make the choices and she killed it both times!! Great service, some giggles, and a truly wonderful lunch. You come once and you'll be hooked. Thanks again to the pretty blond lady who creates a great vegetarian lunch for me!!

Shawn D.

Yelp
The food was really good, and the fabulous person helping us, Vicky, knew all the perfect flavor profiles and combinations. Vicky's customer service was beyond compare!

Jaime F.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Fresh, unique ingredients that fuse together well. The use of cornbread with tacos and enchiladas grabbed my attention. I was a bit skeptical but greatly surprised. Definitely a place to dine in the future. The ladies, Chris and Vickie, at the counter were very helpful and friendly.

Jane V.

Yelp
CHRIS AND LORENZO ARE VERY kind . This was our first time here and they were very helpful to answer all of our questions. It's wonderful, thank you we definitely look forward to coming back.

Yelp
Delicious. Authentic. Quick and easy. Fun. Good location. Love enchiladas. Lots of choices.

Yelp
Sorry, no pics. This was a quick lunch stop. Everything is so good. I love how you can customize your entrees. This is such comfort food for me, and always so delicious and filling. Everything from their hearty corn chowder & tortilla soups to their yummy enchiladas. I tried this location for the first time this week. I have been to their other locations on 7th, and on Camelback. The one thing I will say is they are consistently good, no matter the day, no matter the location. Always friendly and fast service, and reasonably priced, with generous portions. Check them out!!

Yelp
If you're looking for cheap, greasy enchiladas look elsewhere! Gadzooks is a DIY enchilada bar, comparable to Chipotle. Start with your main dish. 2 enchiladas are $9.25. Add a 3rd for $3. But don't because 2 enchiladas are enough. Trust me. Neither Bf nor I finished even half of ours and Bf said it was a soggy mess reheated the next day. Then pick your filling: chicken, pork shoulder, bison (lunch only), Jack potato, mushroom, short rib, cheese, or cornbread. Pick your sauce, your cheese, add ons, salsas, toppings and wham! Now you have your custom enchiladas!! The total for our 2 3-lada entrees and 1 pumpkin cookie was $34.73. Ouch. Restaurant prices to go?! The ingredients were better quality but the chicken was on the bland side; roasted tomatillo? I don't think so. Order the short ribs or pork shoulder instead! 1 pumpkin cookie was $3.35 and it was the size of my palm. It was good though! Iced with brown sugar! Gadzooks gets a lot of love but for me, it's still overhyped. 3.5 stars!

Yelp
Was excited to try after reading the reviews. I was not disappointed. The food was delicious! I had the short rib enchiladas, festival tacos, chips, salsa, and guacamole. The servers gave me all the right suggestions. It was not too busy so I was able to eat in. Nice place with delicious food. Definitely will be back!

Yelp
Inept staff, that don't understand their own menu and with 4 things on the menu how is it possible to be out of one of the main items. Don't waste your money or time on this place.

Maddy K.

Yelp
Just ordered from Uber eats. Portion was really small and I spent almost $18 on my meal. I also asked for jalapeño ranch and never got it. 10/10 do not recommend.

Genevieve P.

Yelp
I used to be a fan but something has definitely changed in the past year. The portions have gotten so small and prices have gone up quite a bit. They charge for chips and salsa, which is fine, except the chips were stale and the salsa had gone bad and tasted sour. There's never anyone in here anymore and now I get why. So many other good spots in this area.
google avatar

Donna B.

Yelp
Very good enchiladas! I will definitely go back. I loved all the different kind of sauces and salsas they put on. I went during lunch and there was a bit of a wait because there was only two people working it seemed like they needed more help during a lunch shift. Love the pickled onions!
google avatar

Katherine F.

Yelp
This place was delicious! The depth of flavor we got in everything we tried was amazing. The service was great and helpful for us. The Jack potatoes deserve a special mention. I could eat those every day!
google avatar

Naomi G.

Yelp
Alright .... let me start by saying I was EXTREMELY excited to come in and try this place out. My excitement was quickly met with disappointment. I ordered two meals and a side of guacamole and chips and paid $40+ after all their up charges. The side of mashed potatoes add on was a fork full of potatoes and the same for the "cornbread", yes a bite. I was dumbfounded. I almost thought I was being pranked. I paid for each side and as you can see in the picture it was basically non existent. The egg is also an add on. The side of guacamole was one of those tiny little salsa condiment cups full and the chips came with about 10-15 chips in the bottom of the bag if that. The price for what was received wasn't comparable. They also up charge for some of the meats on top of the plate price. Aside from all that I have mentioned, the flavor was seriously lacking. Onto the seating. We opted for outside because of "social distancing" and each table as well as the bar was absolutely filthy. It clearly hadn't been wiped down in weeks. The build up of dirt and grime was not possible in days. This is highly unacceptable especially when there's hardly anywhere you can sit and so many people opt for outside now. It take but a minute to wipe down a table or counter. They weren't that busy. There was only two or three people that came in for food the entire time we were there. There is no reason the people working there couldn't take a moment to sanitize things or at the very least wipe it down.

Yelp
Gadzooks is such a awesome restaurant for the meat eater to the vegan diet. Such a great range of choices from tacos, enchiladas, salads and poblanos. They cook the enchiladas and poblanos right then and there in the oven. It takes a little time to get your food but trust me it's worth it. When you order your dish they start out by what your looking to get and then they will cook the enchiladas or poblanos. After that you can add your various toppings like pickled red onions, salsa's and dressings. This time I went with the poblanos and I'll say they are a great choice. Got a chicken poblano and the mushroom spinach filling. I'll say you need to go with the chicken. It's absolutely the best! It's more on the low carb choice which I don't mind and they are absolutely a great dish. Perfectly melted cheese with excellent green salsa and delicious picked red onions on top. Such a good dish! Also ordered some of the cornbread which is great also. It's a very sweet cornbread that has a nice little spice and a good end crust from the cornbread. All around I will come back here often to enjoy the dishes here. Lots of low carb options, vegan and the meat eater choices. Try them out!

Yelp
Holy Schnikes!! Great food, speedy service, and better tasting than a number of other spots. We ordered and briefly afterwards the food arrived, bag was securely closed, order was correct and the taste, amazing! Filling and we have enough for lunch tomorrow. We'll be back!!
google avatar

Yelp
This place had the nicest people working there. They welcomed us in and were overly kind. Some things they couldn't control was the food quality. Unfortunately, the chips were stale and they were out of spot of food items. The items they did have left wasn't that good. :( I tried the tortilla soup and it was just not that good. My friend had an enchilada and she shared it was ok but nothing to write home about. I wanted to like this place hit it just didn't hit the mark. Highlights- customer service. Would I go back? No, I think I wouldn't to be fair. Only gave them two stars for the wonderful staff they had. The food was not worthy of a spot to seek out.

Paula P.

Yelp
Yummy yummy food that's affordable!! That tortilla soup ..oh my! Fiesta taco recommended by manager was the best I've had! But that Tortilla soup! There's the base soup and then you add things..just let Chris do it! She's amazing and very customer oriented! Prices are so high in many of our favorite Mexican restaurants, but this is my new favorite for taste, affordability and making you feel like you are in a Mexican family and they are making the most delicious food while making you feel a part of that familia!!
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
Gadzooks they offer some tasty enchilada choices at Gadzooks! But egads they don't just stop at enchiladas, they also offer tacos, stuffed poblanos, nachos, salads and soup. Goodness gracious, what possibilities! Since it was my first time here I wanted to go with the enchiladas. Gosh, might as well since it's part of their restaurant name, right? I originally wanted to try the bison but the guy helping us out mumbled something about it not being available. Crikey what's a gal to do then? For the two enchiladas included with the order I went with the green chile pork and short rib instead then. After choosing which tortilla you want them with (I had the 100% corn) and your filling, you can then choose your cheese(s), sauce(s), toppings, and salsa(s). Blimey if you must know (and I know you do), I had two types of cheeses (Asadero and Chihuahua**), Xmas style green and red sauce, pickled onions, cotija cheese, slaw, with pico, chile de arbol, salsa verde and habanero salsa on the side. Ay carumba that's a lot of stuff! I also added an egg for an extra buck or so. Too bad it wasn't on my dish when I checked out and paid! Sacrebleu! The guy making our enchiladas forgot to put it on my dish and had to walk out to where we were sitting to place it on top of my enchiladas. Overall it was a tasty meal. If your meal is not though I suppose you have no one to blame but yourself for creating your own combination of flavors! I liked all the sauces, salsas and meats. I requested the egg over easy and it was more like over hard since there was no runny yolk. It is a bit pricey since the total for 2 enchiladas and an egg was a little over $10 with tax. Zounds! Service was succinct. The guy making our meals didn't really give off a friendly vibe but golly gee, I wasn't expecting much from a fast casual place. **No small, big-eared googly eyed dogs were harmed in the making of this enchilada nor from writing this review

Alexis F.

Yelp
We got the absolute best service from chris and vicky!! They had really good vibes and made us feel so welcome. They made the best tacos!! Definitely stop by and visit when in the area!!

Rome N.

Yelp
Hello, I was just writing a note of appreciation! You have amazing customer service from two of your Tempe location employees Cynthia and Rebekah! We really need to get them some Hot-handle gloves and a pay increase! They were focused and determined to keep the food as fresh and not give me the bottom of the pan cornbread and handle the hot pans with ease all while assisting me a a first time customer from Los Angeles. I greatly appreciate their patience and passion for a great experience to your restaurant. Thanks, Rome from LA

Yelp
I'd never been here or to any Gadzooks before, and so it was the first time for both Karen and I! I feels tucked away, even though it's on University, but they have a good amount of parking which is nice. We perused the menu in store and decided to order their enchiladas. I got a flour/corn combo with chicken and jack potato, Christmas sauce, habanero, pico de gallo, fried egg ($1.25) goat cheese (1.50), cotija cheese, jack cheese (can you sense a pattern?) and jalapeño ranch on the side. We sat outside on the patio and one of the employees came out with our eggs, which he forgot to put on our plates. Customer service was minimal, wasn't friendly and didn't feel very welcomed, especially it being our first time. The food was tasty, lots of flavor and the ranch was yummy. It didn't quite fill me up, so I'd probably need another 'lada or chips. Food did get cold quickly so eat fast!

Hannifah C.

Yelp
Service here is amazing! Rvert crew member is very helpful and fast and Vicki is so much fun and gives great recommendations if you don't know what to order and everything I have had has been an amazing amount of flavor!
google avatar

Cyn V.

Yelp
We love this concept and the food is great. My favorite dish is the 2 enchiladas - both with Cornbread - and the Christmas salsa. It is sooo good. My hubby's favorite is the short rib. Big shout out to this location for always keeping this busy location clean and great customer service.
google avatar

D V.

Yelp
It was just a fluke we came here because I was looking for a place to have soup and this was one of them that was near ASU. There was only 1 person working, which we got there around noonish. The food was good, but I find $12.75 for 2 custom enchiladas to be quite pricey. I don't know if that's the going rate around ASU. The person working was factual, but not real friendly. Shortly after we ordered, other people started coming in. I may go there again because the food was good.
google avatar

Lionel V.

Yelp
WOW, what find this place was. The best enchiladas I've ever had. Great homemade corn tortillas, pick your meat, I had Bison and pork shoulder. Add your toppings, sit down and enjoy yourself because it's a treat. Well worth whatever you pay. Good food is not cheap but most satisfying

Yelp
Love Gadzooks the flavor combinations are endless and so delicious. This was my first time visiting this location.. I've been to the others previously You can get enchiladas (they're known for these), Street tacos, nachos, salad, or poblanos .. choice of protein & toppings, and tortilla The menu board explains step by step what you're doing.. including all the options in that step .. I went with the enchiladas $8.95, 50/50 tortilla (corn &flour - the best!), protein I had the modelo braise bison and guajillo braised short rib (they do not skimp on the meat!) .. Christmas sauce (half red/green) into the oven with no cheese .. I topped it with salsa and slaw .. I don't typically do dairy The cornbread is amazing and highly recommended, they have several vegan options on the standard menu The sangria was light and refreshing.. went well with the enchilada dinner before the show at ASU Gammage. I'd recommend this place and will definitely be back.

Monica O.

Yelp
Oh the love of enchiladas is real guys! But sadly, it's not shared within my family so making them isn't something I do often. So, when I learned that Gadzooks was opening close to my house I knew it was going to be a fast favorite of mine! Gadzooks set up is kind of like Chipotle style, you state what you want, pick your proteins, then your toppings and so on. I normally do the 2 enchiladas with the 50/50 corn flour tortilla and for fillings I do roasted tomatillo chicken and sweet and spicy cornbread. I then cover it in cheese and add green & red sauce too it (Christmas style) and after the cheese is all melty and the sauce is warm I'll have it topped with cotija cheese, pickled onion, honey v slaw, creama and some salsa verde. This is enchilada heaven! So good! I love that anytime I have a craving for enchiladas I just have to go down the street and get me some!

Yelp
Unhelpful staff. Needed to correct order placed on their app. Unfortunately the app doesn't allow for changes or any form of contact. Called no answer... Called again, no answer, Called again, no answer, Called the Phoenix store (they answered and tried to be helpful & said I had to call Tempe) Called again, no answer, Finally they answered, said to fix it on the app which isn't an option. Team member said she couldn't fix it. I told her I'd come pick it up. So I hopped in my car, headed over, and picked it up. I asked for a refund of the delivery fee and was again told to use the app (w hi h by this time still didn't have that option). So...I paid almost $30 in delivery fee and driver tip only to pick it up myself. No Last time we'll be eating at Gadzooks which is sad as we've eaten there for years.

Yelp
This place right here is a new favorite! Think upgraded Chipotle meets enchiladas. Came on a weekday during lunch and got through the line efficiently and had great customer service. The unique aspect of this restaurant is you can craft your enchiladas with flour or corn tortillas, various meats, and all the sauces and delicious fixings. Love all the different choices. Best part is they put your enchilada dish in their oven so when it's ready the cheese and food is bubbling and deliciously yummy. My food was excellent. They also have options to build your own salad that look great. In terms of seating it is a relatively small, chill restaurant and they offer small tables with both inside and outside seating. Parking lot is small but I saw some people parking down the street. Great spot!

Yelp
Guide dog for the blind and blind not welcome to sit inside. My son is blind has a guide dog for the blind. We were told they have a open kitchen and must sit outside. Ada compliance is not being observed we have the license and the tags that this is a certified guide dog If your blind. Your not welcome to sit inside. It get old being discriminated for being blind !!

Yelp
I've been to several in Phoenix. The food is very good. You choose how you want it set up like a taco, bowl, or enchilada. Indoor and outdoor seating at the location on Tempe. Everyone is always satisfied. I am happy to be able to have a good vegan option.

Yelp
There is not enough good things I can say about Gadzooks. I was out in Phoenix for work and I went 4 times. I so wish they were in California. We don't have anything like that out here. So good!!!
