The 30 Essential Restaurants in the Pioneer Valley, Home of the Five College Consortium

"Supporting local farmers, butchers, and dairies is a way of life in this part of the country, so it’s no surprise that Galaxy furnishes the names of its suppliers front and center on its website, and hosts will likely mention one or two throughout dinner service. Aside from what’s fresh, the menu doesn’t have a central focus, instead pulling inspiration from pan-Asian, Southern, and modern American flavors, all with a midcentury twist that matches the restaurant’s funky decor." - Nat Belkov

Always a nice night at Galaxy. Great service, drinks and food. Short ribs come with amazing mashed potatoes. House pasta always delicious and tonight's with shrimp, spinach and smoked tomatoes did not disappoint. Thanks, Galaxy!

Google
I had a fantastic meal and great service in a cool environment. Portions were perfect (I'm a big guy and I was satisfied and left with nothing). Desserts are on point! They carry good NA beers, for those who enjoy them, and good mocktails. They don't really make substitutions to the menu, but they're very up front about it, so don't be surprised if told, "no".

We were previously very loyal patrons. However, we made a reservation today to go to dinner to celebrate my husband and my Birthday with my mother in law. We made a reservation for 6pm, inside because my mother in law has a heart condition and can’t sit outside on the patio in the heat. When we got there, the hostess told us it was a 45 minute wait for our reservation because we wanted to sit inside, and apparently a reservation doesn’t actually reserve you a seat in the restaurant. And when we said we couldn't do that, she shrugged and walked away. If you want good service and good food, I’d suggest going across the street to Calico.

Google
The food was fabulous, always surprised at the specials. We ordered a deviled egg appetizer and it was soooo good, fresh dill oh man. Our main coarse was also fabulous. We were able to eat outside on the patio which was nice as well. Five stars.

We have been going to Galaxy for years, it’s my favorite restaurant in the area by far. The chef is definitely experienced, there is usually a variety of different cultural foods. Food ranges from fried chicken, to kabobs, Asian inspired dishes etc. Tonight I got the fettuccini special with clams bacon and kale, the pasta was made from scratch. The roasted tomatoes made the sauce amazing. My wife got the short ribs which we’ve had a few times. This place always cooks vegetables so perfectly, the green beans were cooked just right and seasoned well. Galaxy does a deviled egg of the day, they are always good and 5$ for two eggs halved, we got a Caesar salad and two drinks. The drinks are always great but by far the best part of the restaurant is the service. We’ve had the same servers for years, you never wait for water, check ins, or anything. The place has a quirky look and is always clean. This is my go to restaurant for my birthday or other special occasions. Highly recommend.

Google
We had a family get together here and were very surprised about the quality of the food in this small town restaurant. It shows the quality of time spent to craft and curate a good selection of dishes that caters to almost any type of gathering.

My husband and I booked a private room for our rehearsal dinner upon recommendation from our venue coordinators and everything was outstanding! The food, drinks, and service were all incredible. We're looking forward to taking occasional trips up to Easthampton from Connecticut to reminisce about our wedding weekend and eat more delicious food!!

Eden S.

Google
I have never had a good meal or drink here. The service has been fine, and the atmosphere is what really drew me in! I want this place to be better! But why is everything partnered with weird sweet sides and sauces? They need to focus on executing simpler ideas better. The drinks are not proportioned well either ingredient wise.

Yelp
Knows the whole fam! Great legacy of hard works Thur the years to mastery gourmet foods course.... Yo yo that places packed every weeks for ten years.... What you think?

C M.

Yelp
I adore galaxy. Great drinks and staff. The outdoor area inthe summer is beautiful. wish they had more vegan options but otherwise one of my favorite places in Easthampton or Northampton.

Yelp
I've come here a few times, having made reservations for special occasions (Valentine's Day, New Years Eve etc). The food is good, but I find the price tag to be outrageous. Every time we've made a reservation for a special occasion, the menu states "assorted appetizers" or something to that effect (a secret until you arrive for your designated time), and when we get there, we get a few tiny bite items, and each time one of the 'appetizers' was hummus and pita, a spiced nut of some sort, and maybe a tasty fried item. I feel like that preparation for an expensive meal is pretty lazy and uninspired. The wait staff is all very excellent, the drinks we've had are good, and the chef does good things for the community. I just feel a little taken advantage of financially while eating food I can really get anywhere. I know they can improve and I will update my review if I see that improvement.

Yelp
This is a quirky place. Very limited menu. There are only 6 dinner choices plus an additional couple specials. It wasn't easy to find something for everyone but the food we chose was excellent. We had fried chicken and biscuit and the dumplings for apps. Both were very good. I ended up with the braised short ribs with a fried potato cake. It was really delicious. The potato was outstanding!! My husband had crab cakes and roasted potatoes, which he enjoyed. The wait staff were great. Super friendly and they were all dressed cute with space buns in their hair. They definitely enhanced the experience. I wouldn't rush back just because there aren't enough choices but the food is quality and what we had we really enjoyed.

Dan F.

Yelp
Our last two visits have been disappointing. Popular menu items have run out by 7 pm on both occasions, which seems odd. Who runs out of salmon? Decided to try their tofu, and was seriously underwhelmed. Strong zaatar flavor, if you like that. Turns out, I don't, at least all by its lonesome. Still a fun night out. But, will probably wait a bit before returning.

Ann N.

Yelp
Galaxy is consistent, fun, and a great place for dinner. They have specials every night, which is great. The soups are always good. The service is pleasant and cheerful. If only they were open every night! That's my only complaint. The food is good and interesting. Grateful to have it in my town.

Margaret K.

Yelp
We have been going to Galaxy for years!!It has an excellent menu with daily specials as well. Casey, the chef and owner, is excellent and doesn't disappoint! I've had some of my best ever meals there!! This restaurant is highly recommended. The wait staff is friendly and helpful, and work as an excellent team. The restaurant has several seating options: two indoor dining rooms that are very comfortable, and outdoor seasonal seating. There's also a larger room that can be used for larger parties when booked in advance. Opened for dinner Wednesday through Saturday. Reservations suggested.

Yelp
Please be advised that the advertised closing time of 9:00 pm on the website and posted on the door is a bit of a fib. The kitchen closes at 8:30.

Yelp
This place has groupies.. literally. A cult like following. Accidentally got there a few minutes before it opened and there were 4 groups of people waiting for Galaxy to open. When we were seated, I asked about it and apparently that's completely normal here so that's a good sign. The decor is delightfully kitschy (sp?)- SO fun - an upscale yet casual relaxed vibe. It's also a flashback to reruns which are literally playing on the TV at the funky bar. It's worth checking out just for all of the awesome eye candy. But that's just the beginning. Good local beer list on draft with more selections in cans. I wanted to try all of the things the bartenders were making next to the pile of purple orchid garnishes. And the food... damn the food. Coffee rubbed steak. Yes. Beef shank. Yes. Brussel sprouts yes. The whole menu YES. In a couple trips at least lol which for sure will be happening. How can you not go to a spot with good vibes, food, and an astronaut out front. Seriously. It's great lol
google avatar

Arley E.

Yelp
The all around package. Good food and obviously love their deviled eggs. Drinks are always on point and their waitstaff are excellent. It's one of our favorite local spots. I love the salmon and purple sticky rice! Get their housemade deserts. They're outstanding.

William G.

Yelp
We had reservations for Valentines Day and weren't dissapointed! The food was excellent, especially the roast duck. The service was a bit slow but it was a busy that night.
google avatar

Yelp
You will need more than a frialator and aggressive condiments to convince me this food is worthy of the praise this place garners. The flavor profiles are meant to assault your palate versus having a fine dining experience. I paid 28 dollars for a medium rare steak that came out well done on a dish that looked like a blind person overloaded at a potluck. Hard to keep food on the plate. The interior decor is more-or-less time period accurate and really enjoyable to be a part of. Shout out to the owners who knew the local scenesters would bite. I dig your theme but it feels like y'all have gotten too comfortable.

Mimi W.

Yelp
I love Galaxy. Pleasant and delicious. Their service is thoughtful and the place is super comfortable. The deserts are ridiculous! Save room for sure!
google avatar

Marceline A.

Yelp
Great service. I like the mid mod ambiance. The food is inventive and delicious! Easthampton is convenient to downtown Northampton too.
google avatar

Kaylyn P.

Yelp
I was afraid the cool kitschy sculptures out front were a schtick to cover up for mediocre food, but I was wrong. Everything was delicious -entree, apps and mocktails! The service was top notch and I loved every minute. Will definitely be back
google avatar

Terri L.

Yelp
This place is fabulously western mass, and an amazingly excellent foodie spot. Beautiful little spot, they deserve better real estate for the best restaurant in western mass.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Food is good, not spectacular. Lots of extraneous sauces and seasonings that don't do a good job of covering that the food is "fine" but not great. Outdoor patio is nice, when open.

Am G.

Yelp
Visiting the area for the week. Had a rare date night with my husband. Came to galaxy following a suggestion from a family member in the area. Made a reservation and I am glad we did as the place was quite busy. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation and were seated right away. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Food was absolutely amazing. Would highly recommend and will come back again for sure. My favorites were watermelon feta salad and lemon meringue tart.
google avatar

Dawn E.

Yelp
Super cool vibe in here. It feel like you're stepping back in time - perhaps to a GALAXY far away. Then it gets cool. Fun craft cocktails. Good shareable bites. And some delectable desserts. All topped off with friendly bartenders that engaged with us throughout. Would recommend!!

Kara V.

Yelp
My husband and I ate here and we absolutely loved everything we had. We had the watermelon feta salad off of the specials menu and it was top-notch. My husband enjoyed his steak- "it was cooked perfectly"-- and I had the mushroom medley which was one of the best things I have ever eaten.
google avatar

Amuse B.

Yelp
Incredible, really. We got ALL THE THINGS and every single dish was delicious. I like that they have a daily deviled egg app because who doesn't like deviled eggs? The steak was incredible, the beef satay, the green goddess salad, the Cajun shrimp and OMG the mousse dessert was out of this world. Lots of love goes into this food and their backyard patio is adorable. Wonderful place.
google avatar

Heather W.

Yelp
And I am laughing as I read the suggested Yelp review against the one I about to write. It suggests writing about a gruff waiter in a steakhouse. Well, the galaxy is neither gruff nor known for its steak. It is like something you would expect to find in the Jetsons, space-like 50s lighting With diner-like booth seating. I have been here mostly for cocktails which are nice. I always expect to see something a little more themed towards the ambience, neon lit glasses or some other uniquely titled drinks, but it's disappointingly not like that. The food served here is deliciously plated, but I've never been intrigued to come here for their dinner selections more than once. Perhaps better known for their appetizers. I think some of it comes down to the expectation of having this funky fusion thing going, and having more of an upscale feel to the menu. You walk in expecting one thing and then when you get the menu see something a little bit different than you might've been expecting. Speaking of expecting, you can expect to have a courteous bartender and waitress, and also a very delicious dessert selection.

Yelp
Delicious, classic food, with a fun vintage feel and friendly staff! The menu is very small (which I love, being an indecisive diner!), so if you want a lot of options, may not be the place for you. Our go-to dinner place outside on the beautiful patio, or indoors on either side of the space!

A N.

Yelp
First time visit and we have a new favorite restaurant! Can't wait to return. Great atmosphere. Great service. And of course great food. Started with 3 apps because they all sounded amazing. The fave was the hot fried chicken and biscuit (they need to patent and sell the maple butter!). Ridiculously delicious. The dinner of pistachio crusted salmon and pasta with smoked salmon and peas were amazing. Dessert was equally fantastic. To top it off, it was all very reasonably priced. Definitely a 5-star.
google avatar

Katie N.

Yelp
We had a very good meal with three adults, a teen and a tween. The Nashville hot chicken waffle was excellent! We also enjoyed the butternut squash soup, beet salad, and truffle fries. The main courses were actually not as good as the appetizers, but that is because the appetizers were so good and not that the main courses were lacking! We shared the squash quesadilla and the lamb kabobs. Now we are moving on to the warm chocolate cake and apple pie ... a la mode, of course! The mid-century modern decor is also worth mentioning! Clean lines and interesting wall art made for good conversation starter. All in all a great restaurant in this re-emerging little town.

Dan K.

Yelp
Very tasty dinner and friendly attentive service. The deviled eggs were very flavorful. The braised pork, smoked gouda mac n cheese, and hash were amazing; our favorite dish. We will come back again.
google avatar

Jen M.

Yelp
The food is good, the decor is awesome and the service was superb. The reason I am rating 3 stars is the cleanliness. It wasn't any one glaring thing, but there was a lot of dust, some obvious spots on the drinking glasses and, due to an open window, there was a bug buzzing around while we ate (could happen anywhere, not the end of the world). For the record, I am definitely down to give this place another shot, I absolutely loved everything else about it, and it's super possible we hit them on an off night, but clean floors, glasses and seats are super important.
google avatar

Carolyn R.

Yelp
Everything here is exemplary! Deviled eggs! Fried chicken! (Juicy!) Lemon tart! (REAL whipped cream!) All staff members are friendly and attentive. (You don't have to ask anyone to get your server because you need something, because that employee is happy to get you whatever you need) Everyone appears to work together beautifully.
google avatar

Liz P.

Yelp
1 signature cocktail, 1 local craft beer, two apps, two entrees, and 1 dessert all for $72/77 (can remember exact price), YES PLEASE! Had date night dinner at Galaxy the other night and it was very good! We both had specials, duck confit ravioli, and tuna steak/salad, both fabulous! We sat near the bar and loved the different atomic clocks and updated/new take one mid century decor. All the cocktails sounded great and I wanted to try several of them, but went with an excellent bourbon blackberry cocktail. I had a great choice! The pear bread pudding was very good and a decent sized portion- definitely made for sharing.
google avatar

Yelp
Really great effort tonight. Definitely worthy of 4 stars but a few things pushed it lower Husband had the short rib fettuccine. Pasta was fresh and cooked perfectly. Short ribs were delicious and tender and the balsamic glaze added a hint of sweet to the savory plate with slightly bitter broccoli rabe. Only negative was the pasta was in a little short supply. A few more turns of pasta and its a 4star home run. I ordered the pistachio crusted salmon. The fish was so perfectly fresh and cooked to perfection. The mango hollandaise was a perfect balance of sweet and salty to compliment the pistachio crust. The Asian slaw was fresh and crisp with a great flavor. For me, the purple sticky rice just weighed down the whole "light and fresh" vibe of the plate. The color was a big contrast to rest of the dish and the flavor was a little dull and musty. A simple fluffy and fragrant Jasmine rice would have been fine with me. I will definitely order this dish again but I'll ask for a substitute side. And because Galaxy has chefs and not cooks I know they'll have no issue with that Highly recommend a return trip, soon.

Gertrude H.

Yelp
I love Galaxy. They make the best cocktails in town and have a small but creative menu. The food is scrumptious and artistically presented which somehow makes it taste even better. The staff is very friendly and the environment is homey and comfortable. The only complaint is that it's too loud in there at least in the bar area which is where I like to sit. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Angie K.

Yelp
Galaxy is a fantastic bar/restaurant in the area. I've been there several times in the past 8 months & each time the food has been amazing. My favorites are the deviled eggs and the pork dumplings. Friends have gotten main dishes and always liked them immensely. Dessert is a must! My current favorite is the Apple Pumpkin Crisp with Butterscotch ice cream. I've also had a pear ginger cake that was fantastic.
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
If the staff went to bNapoli to be trained this restaurant would get 5 stars. Galaxy holds itself out as a high end restaurant and it is. The food is interesting, always different whenever we go and most importantly delicious. Not a huge menu but solid choices. You get the feeling the wait staff have never eaten at a high end restaurant, or been trained properly. Nice people but have a deer in the headlight expression when making requests or asking questions about the food. Thumbs up either way. Still going back.
google avatar

Julie P.

Yelp
This place feels like you are time traveling or having a meal on the set of a 60s movie. I love the decor and the unusual vibe. We were the first ones to arrive when it opened and it was a little chilly but eventually warmed up. We ordered misc appetizers- pork dumplings (meh), sauteed shrimp (ok), Caesar salad because my husband won't pass up an opportunity to have anchovies if they are offered, but he was disappointed there was only 3 small ones and poblano and sweet potato fritters with maple cream dip (very good). And the star of the show was the salmon! Woah- so delicious. The food came out quickly and the service was ok. If it weren't for the salmon, we both felt it just ok- but that salmon.... did I mention how good the salmon was?
google avatar

Katheryn K.

Yelp
The food was excellent, the waitress was friendly and attentive, and we enjoyed our drinks. They have a small set menu as well as daily specials. My friend describe the ambiance as straight out of that 70s show. I had never eaten here before, when I was a kid, I honestly thought it was a science store. What I liked most about the on tap selection was that it changes regularly and the beers are local. Spenser's beer is one I enjoy but is hard to find in their darker blends, I was excited to find it on tap. We called ahead to make a reservation which I have heard can be necessary, we ate late around 8pm and the place was packed but started to clear out around that time in the dinning section. The only negative thing I have to say is that when making the reservation, the call kept cutting out on their end, I think they use a cell phone...
google avatar

Gina T.

Yelp
Consistently delicious dinners, great service and very nice atmosphere: Chic but not pretentious.
google avatar

Greg H.

Yelp
The food was of very good quality, but definitely on the higher side for cost. The waitstaff was a bit too obsequious, checking in a tad too often and being a bit TOO present, but I would much rather have this error than the lack of all attention. We were not met at the door, and were told to find a table ourselves by a bartender, and then were told that we should have been seated... Overall, nothing big and insurmountable, but signs of a disorganized front of the house. The menu is deliberately limited, and so there are not a huge amount of Vegetarian options, and very little Gluten Free options that I saw. The saving grace is the food. The risotto balls were tasty and perfect. My dining companion said his Salmon was the best he had ever had. The Enchiladas I had were flavorful and spicy. The Crème brûlée was some of the best I had ever had. Dinner for two, ginger ales, an appetizer and two desserts was somewhere in the $60 range, so come prepared.
google avatar

Megan C.

Yelp
Cool name. But I'm pretty sure I could experience a better meal in space. When I arrived with a friend, we were super excited that the menu was concise, and that the decor had personality. Unfortunately, every item we ordered was more disappointing than the last. The menu promised exciting and interesting dishes, yet when each arrived to the bar-top I was not impressed. Although the owners of Galaxy did a wonderful job nostalgically bringing their customer base back in time with the decor, I'm not sure they can say the same for their flavors. There is nothing appealing about the metallic taste of canned beets. It reminded me of something my father had to choke down as a kid, back when Reagan's admin implemented 'Government Cheese.' The curvaceous staff always had a smile on their face, despite the fact that they knew what they were serving us was sub-par... and the food came fast... alarmingly fast. Don't get the pulled chicken rectum biscuit.

Wayne B.

Yelp
Consistently excellent and delicious, this is the kind of restaurant every neighborhood should have. Food is clever and flavorful ; The execution invariably skilled. Service always manages to be both professional and personal. Brilliant salads (especially the beet), luscious soups, standout fried chicken and very good desserts.
google avatar

Isaac B.

Yelp
Delicious food. Creative cocktails. Solid wine and beer selection. Locally sourced and and from round the globe. Friendly staff. Great for an intimate date with your sweetie, or a celebratory family dinner.
google avatar

Laura G.

Yelp
This place is fabulous and I can't understand the bad reviews. My husband and I went for dinner on Saturday night and sat in the bar. Our server, Michael, was knowledgeable and very pleasant. We started with the fried Brussels sprouts with a delicious aioli on the side and the mushroom polenta. Both were delicious and nothing was left on the plates. For dinner I had the pistachio encrusted salmon, which used to be on the menu at the Apollo Grill, and it is fabulous! Michael asked me how I wanted my salmon cooked, which is sooooo appreciated because there is nothing worse than overcooked salmon and I ordered it medium rare. My husband had the filet, medium rare. Both proteins came out cooked to perfection. We shared a nice bottle of wine and had a great night. If you haven't been there yet, you are missing out!
google avatar

Monique C.

Yelp
Always a good decision to go to Galaxy. The bar mixes a great drink and the food is delicious. Our favorites are the fried Brussels sprouts, the Pork dumplings, the scallops and the salmon. A fun, always welcoming hot spot in Easthampton.
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
One of the best restaurants in the area. Love the decor (it's like you're back in the 50's or 60's) and the food is delicious.
google avatar

Howard B.

Yelp
REALLY, really liked this place. Galaxy leaves many other restaurants far, far away... The decor is very mid century modern and right up my alley! However, and more importantly, the food was perfectly prepared and the menu was different and probably could be termed unique. They had grilled cheese and deviled eggs as appetizers. We had both and were happy we ordered them. They had more traditional entrees (with a twist of course) for our main courses. I had some really nice scallops for my main meal and my sister and brother in law had some lamb. We all sampled each other's meals and we were all very satisfied. The Galaxy is different ...and different is good. I would have more expected to find Galaxy in Northampton. I hear they switch up the menu seasonally and that's great. If I lived in Easthampton I would be here very often. It gets pretty busy on the weekends here and we had to eat at the bar. If they take reservations I would make some. Maybe one complaint was the bar was a little dark. On the other hand Jessica was a treat as a bartender and made some super good drinks. My Old Fashioned's were rocking and would kick a mule's a$$. Thanks for a good time Galaxy!

Mike T.

Yelp
Food was good, but I will never make reservations there again. We reserved the back "private room" for a group of 8 professionals. 30 minutes into our nice private dinner, a group of 10 people with 6 children under 6 sat at the other "private room" table. Needless to say, that we could not hear ourselves think, let alone talk. When I asked to talk to the manager then the owner, I was told that they cannot control who reserves the room. I explained that a private room reservation on Saturday night should provide some context. He said that there was nothing he could do. They did not ask for the kids to quiet down (I had to), nor did they comp us anything. The food was good, but if I wanted to eat at chucky cheese, that is where I would have gone. The owner did not bat an eyelash when I told him that he should have at least warned us that the other party was children. Save your money and go somewhere that cares about their customers... This is from someone in town who has had good meals there before. Just bad customer service from ownership. I feel bad for the servers, they tried but with ownership/management like this, it will never be the go to place.

Yelp
Best place in Easthampton, been there several times now. Very cool style, with The Jetsons-esque style. Great music, lots of Metric, Kate Nash, Lily Allen, and that sort. Mellow, calming atmosphere, while still being a groovy and stimulating. Excellent food, risotto balls are great. Drinks are strong and made with finesse. Wait staff was great, very fast service. Perfect downtown location, with a parking lot to boot. Love this place, and will be returning frequently!
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
Chicken and sweet potato waffle is AMAZING. 5+ stars on that dish alone. We also ordered a special Banh Mi bowl with rice, tofu, cucumber and other veggies and a slightly spicy mayo based sauce. It was good. Not excellent, but good enough. The drink were also decent. I ordered a blueberry sage drink from the special list which was ok, but my boyfriend ordered the Pomelo and it was delicious.

Sandy B.

Yelp
Our dinner was wonderful! We started with delicious pork dumplings that came with slaw that had a nice little bite to it. We also shared a beet salad with chopped pistachios and feta that was very well put together. One of us had chicken piccata that came with garlic spinach and polenta and the other had shrimp and grits small plate that also had delicious slices of andouille sausage. We thought most of the prices were fare. Small plates are $7 and $8. My shrimp and grits for $8 was a very filling amount of food. Conversely, the chicken piccata entree for $17 was not any more food than my small plate, but it was excellent. Quality is more important. We shared a warm chocolate cake with mascarpone cheese and cherries on the side and it was terrific. I'm sorry some of the previous diners had disappointing waitstaff because our waitress was very friendly, helpful and cared enough to ask how our food was every time she brought out a new plate. Galaxy's decor is charming. Background music varied from annoying, loud rock to vocal standards that were more appropriate for the atmosphere. I hope those who didn't have a good experience go back and try Galaxy again. We also hope Galaxy brings back the buttermilk fried chicken that the Appollo Grill did so well! Please?

Yelp
Great Restaurant! This was the second time I have been to Galaxy and it was equally as enjoyable as my first visit. They have a great Tapas menu as well as a regular dinner menu. We sampled off the Tapas menu and had the Roasted Beet and Goat Cheese Salad, Wild Braised Mushrooms over Polenta, Shrimp and grits and Chocolate Lava Cake for dessert. I would recommend all of these!! The people on both side of us had the dumplings and they equally as pleased with that dish. We sat at the bar and the bartender was excellent . She was pleasant, helpful with drink recommendations and added to our wonderful dining experience. We will definitely be back!
