Galerna

"Located in the city’s Gros district, Galerna boasts a contemporary look that includes a few maritime-inspired decorative details. Despite its traditional inspiration, the single tasting menu features dishes with a creative flavour." - Michelin Inspector

A Culinary Delight Marred by Awful Service and Organization The culinary experience at Galerna Jan Edan was truly exceptional, marked by outstanding dishes. The presentation and quality of the food were really good. However, the same cannot be said for the overall dining experience. Unfortunately, the impressive culinary journey was overshadowed by a myriad of organizational and service-related issues that significantly detracted from the overall enjoyment. Some frustrating aspects: Not only were the wine and food menus not synchronized, but both were outdated. This led to multiple instances where the wines listed were unavailable, causing disappointment and confusion. The failure to update the menu information, coupled with attempting to sell expensive white wines only without prior mention of the price! The service really tried to sell/cheat on us and came up with the wines for 200 €, 180 €, 160 €! Even, we mentioned several times that we would like to spend max 40 € to 60 € for a white wine as it is written in their outdated menu! And this occurred repeatedly!!! Once we finally ordered the white wine for the start, we got the bottle as it is on the table without the wine cooler. Moreover, as we ordered the red wine later, it was brought directly from the fridge! It was far too cold to be enjoyable. The absence of air conditioning meant the aroma from the kitchen wafted into the dining area, creating an uncomfortable dining atmosphere. The staff appeared overwhelmed and unable to cope with the demands of the evening, like food plates were several times corrected, no wine service. Unkindness, resulting in a lack of attentiveness and an overall negative impact on the dining experience. In conclusion, while the food itself was exceptional, the overall experience was totally frustrating.

This place exceeded our expectations! We were recommended. This was our best meal in Basque so far (and we had already eaten at 2 Michelin starred restaurants) The space was casual and did not reflect the sophisticated 8-course set menu. The dishes looked deceptively simple but the flavors were surprisingly innovative and distinct. We love the fresh oyster with wasabi ice-cream, the fried sea anemone and pan-seared turbot. The best item was the charred pork with spicy mole. The strawberry sorbet with honeyed sheep milk was delightful. The 2 bottles of recommended wine were unusual in a good way. We had not had those wine before and loved them. The service was impeccable. We will come by again if we do come back to San Sebastián. This place is a underrated and deserved more recognition.

Amazing diner! A lot of local products and a passionate chef and staff! The courses are served out in a good pace and the paired wines are special and really have good stories with them.

Sophisticated genuine flavor version of some traditional Basque dishes. The tasting menu is the best option to get the true experience. I had the best time, wonderful service and would recommend "Galerna" to anyone who would like to try new foods with a twist. Bear in mind that some of the portions of the dishes in the tasting menu are very small and keep you more 😉

Great place to have dinner with friends and /or partner! The chef delivered complex dishes with elaborate flavors and plated to perfection. The only negative thing was that the service was a bit slow but I wouldn’t hesitate to come back! Highly recommended

Beautiful cozy place hidden away in a bright white cellar. Locally sourced food with bright flavours, matched by the light and fresh Spanish wines. We were well taken care of by the joyful service. A perfect little trip (in)to the ocean.🐳

We had a great meal at Galerna. They offer either a la carte or a tasting menu for about 88€ per head. We opted for the a la carte and had a selection of different dishes. Galerna has very interesting ingredient combinations and techniques. We loved: The tuna dish (which came with a QR code to check the information of our sustainably fished tuna). It had pieces of cured and raw tuna, wasabi ice cream and a sauce that was an assault to the palate. Very well balanced dish, yet very strong flavours. The tomato dish: a cream of cherry tomatoes with a goats cheese ice cream- delicious! The local catch of the day, served grilled with a smokey flavour, and with the famous grilled bell peppers from this region. They also have a selection of interesting local wines. It was 2 of us and we had 5 dishes each, a glass of wine and waters and spent around 150€. The service was very friendly, but a bit slow.

We were greeted warmly by the chef and owner, Rebekah. She was passionate about her cooking and using the freshest local ingredients to pair with wines from the region. The pintxos starters were stunning especially the trout toast and the croquet with caviar. We could have been so happy to have another round of the pintxos. The Hake was perfectly cooked and the deer was tender and paired beautiful with a Rioja. All the dishes were beautiful presented. The three desserts were scrumptious as well. Wonderful culinary experience of the Basque cuisine!

Yelp
Between experiencing plankton in the dishes, and the can't-miss ibérica pig on the menu, Galerna mixes it up in a daring gastronomical feast. I'm not a Spanish speaker so here's my summary in plain English. Get at least one oyster, hopefully two - so tasty. The "anemones" were worth a taste, perhaps as an amuse bouche instead of a sharing plate. Don't miss out on the trout Pintxo. The octopus is divine. Skip the spider crab, you'll wind up wearing it and the Thai curry for the rest of the day. The ibérica pig was great, we could have eaten another order of the stuff. For dessert the passion fruit soup was delightful. I trust the kitchen completely to produce the finest foods with interesting results. Great value in terms of price, service, food & drink.

Yelp
Better than great-extraordinary! Michelin recommended but should be Michelin starred! My husband and I have eaten at many world-class restaurants and Galerna rivals any of them. The meal at Galerna was among the best we've ever had. The vibe is very casual and down-to-earth. Rebeka, the chef, is very accessible and welcoming, poking her head out from the kitchen and greeting her guests at their tables. The food is creative, visually beautiful and absolutely delicious. The wine pairing is eclectic showcasing many local producers. The service is personal and warm and the servers are very knowledgeable about the food and wine. The restaurant fits in well with the funky and creative Gros neighborhood. It's worth crossing the bridge for. If you're looking for an outstanding gastronomic experience in San Sebastian, don't miss this one!

Yelp
Worst service in a long time. Food was tasty but expensive but that was not my issue anyway. First they didn't have the bottle of wine we chose. By the time they came with a glass, we had finished the food. Then they didn't have the cheese option, but they also forgot to tell us. The bill.... another 20 minutes. Not worth the bad service.
