The 33 Best Rio de Janeiro Restaurants | Eater

"This chicken-focused bar is one of Rio’s most illustrious bohemian institutions, attracting diners throughout the night for plates of crisp-roasted galeto (three-month-old chicken) and glass after glass of beer. The Copacabana icon has a second branch in Botafogo with a much larger area to welcome all the night owls hungry for seasoned chicken hearts, garlic bread, and the essential eggs farofa." - Rafael Tonon

Google
Have to agree with the other reviews — the garlic bread is amazing! It’s definitely not a super local spot as there were mostly tourists when we went, but the food was genuinely delicious. The chicken was perfectly cooked and full of flavour, and the mashed potatoes were also really good. Huge portions too — we left absolutely stuffed. Very good overall!

Google
Great little gem if you're looking for some picanha. It was seasoned and cooked perfectly. One of my best meals in Brazil. With US exchange, it's a great value. The chicken was good with sats rub, but not as good as the steak. Was packed, even at midnight, with tourists and locals.

Google
This was the first meal I had in Brazil after not eating for close to 24 hours while I was travelling , it did not disappoint . The chicken was flavour and tender, and I enjoyed the Sat's sauce on it. The fries were good quality but needed some salt (no problem it's on the table) and the garlic bread was amazing, how does more of the world not talk about Brazilian garlic bread. There are good odds I end up back here during my stay in Rio.

Galeto Sat’s have mastered the art of rotisserie. They make the best garlic bread I’ve ever had. They make chicken hearts taste mouth watering good. A must visit in Rio.

Anthony Bourdain has dined here for one of his shows. That along with a few food blogs from the States and Brazil recommending it means it was on my list of places to eat at. It’s a solid restaurant that serves up pretty good chicken. In fact I ate here twice in a week, the first time to try it out and the second time because it was late at night and they are open until 5AM. Both times I was here it was timed right and I didn't have to wait for a table. The employees were accommodating to a tourist like myself who has a limited Portuguese vocabulary. They also have English language menus although I do like to navigate a menu in another language just to see what I can recognize. Both times I had the chicken with the garlic and pepper sauce as well as pão de alho. The chicken was perfect, juicy and very flavorful. And plenty of garlic. The garlic bread was delicious and had plenty of garlic. I love garlic so it was great for me but I can see some people saying it may be too much garlic. Batatas fritas were good as well. There was more I wanted to try but I will definitely be back the next time I am in Rio de Janeiro. This place has been around for decades so it should still be around on my next visit.

Google
AMAZING Brazilian churrasco grill The best garlic bread I’ve ever had- do not skip it!! We also got the coal grilled boneless chicken wings (AMAZING) and the rib eye steak (also AMAZING) Honestly some of the best food we’ve had in Brazil, maybe ever !! And the prices are so reasonable We came here on our last night in Brazil and are so sad we can’t go back once more 🥲

Google
I was initially skeptical about trying Gelato Sats, as some of the most highly-rated restaurants in Rio had turned out to be disappointing. However, this was absolutely not the case here—I had a fantastic dining experience. I made the mistake of visiting alone, as many dishes are designed for sharing, but my waiter expertly guided me through the menu, and I was not disappointed. For a drink, I had the artisanal caipirinha—strong, delicious, and beautifully presented. For my main, I went with the orange and lemon chicken paired with the highly recommended broccoli rice. The chicken was perfectly cooked, the sauce was rich and flavorful, and the broccoli rice was a standout, featuring crispy garlic slices that added a great texture and depth of flavor. Despite only knowing basic Portuguese, I communicated with my waiter using Google Translate. He was incredibly understanding, friendly, and made excellent recommendations, which I truly appreciated. Overall, this was a fantastic experience. I’d definitely recommend visiting in a group to fully enjoy the variety of dishes, but if you’re dining solo, you’ll still be well taken care of. Just be prepared for a potential wait—this place is popular for a reason!

Google
I recently returned to Rio and made a special trip to this restaurant—even though I was staying in Leblon—just to have their incredible chicken with the house’s special sauce again. And it was absolutely worth it! Hands down the best chicken I’ve ever had in my life. The restaurant has a lively atmosphere, and the staff is super friendly, making the whole experience even better. A must-visit for anyone who loves great food, especially chicken! They have plenty of other delicious options too, but this dish is simply unforgettable.

Yelp
My cousin and I decided to eat at Galeto Sat's because Anthony Bourdain highly recommended it. Long story short, totally worth it. If you're in Rio go get yourself some chicken. It is VERY popular and I'm sure being recommended by Bourdain has a lot to do with it. The first time we tried to eat there the wait was over an hour long. We went sometime after 1AM and there was still a decent wait, maybe close to 30 minutes. The place is pretty small and cramped, but that gives it some charm. Somehow that makes the food taste even better. We ordered a little bit of everything and it was all amazing. Chicken, steak, fries, garlic bread, polenta. It was all cooked and seasoned to perfection. Everything we ordered was delicious Service was fair and prices are reasonable. Do yourself a favor and visit Galeto Sat's!

Yelp
This place's non existent. Tried a few times looking for this place using Google maps. Even asked locals but to no avail. Found a different store instead.
google avatar

Yelp
It may be one of the best after hour chicken spots since El Liberato in the Bronx. The chicken was tasty, and served with some of the best garlic bread and sides I've had in a while. I would love to repeat before l take off.

Yelp
Galeto Simple: 7/10 Galeto Ao molho sats: 8/10 Both were delicious but the sauce they gave to us later made it really really good. Nice eat. H2OH Lime drink: 7/10 Service: Excellent. No English here so practice your Portuguese. Our server really worked with us. Ambiance: Mom and pop shop vibes.

Yelp
The food here was extremely delicious. The restaurant is small, but don't let that deter you from getting authentic Brazilian food. The service was great, use google translate to defeat the language.. About the food, the garlic bread was f'ing amazing. Sorry that I did not take pictures of my meal. I must say after all the waking, you need a home cook meal, and I must say this place is for #foodies :Garlic Bread French Fries, BBQ Chicken (amazing) black beans, and broccoli rice :Guaraná (soda)

Yelp
As an almost newbie to Rio's food hunting, I found good reviews about this place and rave reviews and decided to give it a try since it was close to our hotel. I was even more excited to try their charcoal grilled chicken after knowing that it had Anthony Bourdain's seal of approval. We ordered the galeto with all the fixings (rice, fries, some pico de gallo type of sauce, and egg farofa- a roasted yucca flour and eggs side). Honestly I was utterly disappointed with the flavor of the chicken. No charcoal flavors from the grill and the chicken was really tiny. I am from Brazil and this galeto doesn't even compare to the Galeto da Amelia I always have in Recife. Sides were plentiful, but nothing to write home about. My favorite aspect of this place was the bohemian bar ambiance that Rio is known for, and also the service was traditional with the servers dressed with white shirts and bow ties just like the good old days. Maybe that's what Bourdain fell in love with, the bar culture and bohemian feel of Rio and the restaurant.

Yelp
I suggest this place to anyone that visits Rio. The meat is the star of the show. The chicken hearts were surprisingly delicious.

Yelp
Top 5 best meal I've ever had. We had the galeto simple, picana simple and chicken hearts (with caipirinhas of course) and it was fantastic. Well worth the wait for a table. Do not miss!

Yelp
Don't sleep on this chicken with garlic sauce . Absolutely amazing. Their meal comes w sides and their service is fast . Anthony bourdain came here and it sure did not disappoint

Yelp
Great authentic food. Very nice staff. Little bit of a language barrier but they were patient and we figured it it out together!!

Yelp
During my stay, I went to this restaurant two times for takeout. This restaurant is busy at all times and its a local favorite at all times. The ambiance is lively and full of character/charm before a Flamengo game. I had the galeto complete which comes with farofa, rice, chicken, salad, and fries. Pro tip: Mix the farofa with the rice! The next day, I had the chicken heart and garlic bread. The food was exceptionally delicious. I appreciated the large portion sizes. Treat yourself!
google avatar

Yelp
Freaking delicious grilled meats and veg. As usual, we ordered too much, not exactly knowing how much would arrive. We got linguica, grilled steak (so incredible - tender and perfectly med-rare), one chicken completa - it comes with the tasty farofa (with egg), rice, fries (unnecessary), salad, and a grilled veggie plate. Friendly and efficient staff. It's a tightly-packed and crowded space and be prepared to wait a bit even at low times. It's 100% worth it!
google avatar

Yelp
Certainly a good find per Anthony Bourdain. I was pleasantly surprised to learn it was near our hotel during our stay in Rio. The roasted chicken was very good and tasted like a REAL chicken vs what we get in supermarkets here in the US. They were smaller that what we see here with a little less meat, but just tasted fresher. We ordered the fried polenta which was good, but a very large serving for 1-2 people. We couldn't finish it and ended up throwing over half of it out. The rice was tasty too. Good, but I think TV made it look better than my expectations.

Yelp
Tiny Churrascaria in Rio de Janerio Brazil. We went here for dinner during our last night in Brazil. It was a packed place but you could see that there were a lot of Grilled meats around. The platters were more expensive compared to other places that we had in Brazil but the meat quality was still good overall. The steak was definitely more salty but pretty tender. The other meats were decent as well.
google avatar

Carol B.

Yelp
Best chicken ever!!! Small space but very welcoming! Garlic bread a must also. Fun to see the food cooking!
google avatar

Shawn H.

Yelp
We were good hopping and stopped just to try the namesake Galeto(chicken). Watching other tables avoid the namesake was painful to watch. Like the person who orders a salad at a famous steakhouse. The chicken was great, amazingly tender, extremely moist with a garlic spicy vinegar flavor that is mouthwatering to think about. Service was quick and efficient and beer is ice cold.
google avatar

Annie C.

Yelp
The chicken makes you want to slap your mama, the. Beg for apology. The late, great Anthony Bourdain recommended this place. His recommendations have yet to disappoint. The Garlic chicken is so juicy and flavorful. We had to come back again during time in Rio!
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
This is a little hole in the wall the chicken is the best chicken I've had anywhere in the world the french fries were also to die for not greasy and crispy the white rice the scrambled eggs The tomato and palm of hearts salad The salsa also just very very good service very good I love this place I will be back
google avatar

Dondi D.

Yelp
Great food, even if I had to take it to go because of the crowd. I do have to appreciate the restaurant at corey who was kind enough to let me eat dinner at their place.
google avatar

Pietro P.

Yelp
Ate at this location once and it was outstanding! (Thank you Anthony Bourdain and fellow Yelpers for the recommendations!) We had linguists, fried polenta (which is other-worldly), and the broccoli rice. Service is outstanding as well.

Yelp
Serving Rio de Janeiro for over 40 years, Galeto Sat's is a neighborhood spot revered for cold Beer and Charcoal Broiled Chicken, a meal for two costing perhaps $15USD and the Food served quick with crispy Fries, Egg Farofa and house Pickles all included with the Bird. A no-frills spot even under new ownership, most patrons local though translated menus are available, it is beginning at noon that doors open with to the smell of grilled Meat, a rotisserie up front packed full with everything from Pork to Poultry to Steak. Apparently highlighted in the past by Bourdain, and with a second location in Botafogo, it was minutes after seating in the Copacabana original that an order was placed, chopped Vegetables in Vinegar arriving immediately with the rest not far behind. Cooled only by fans, a situation likely more relevant during summer as the rotisserie releases a significant amount of heat, it is immediately on Chicken that eyes focus when plates arrive, bronzed skin and fragrant flesh each expertly cooked while the better starch is a toss-up between oilless Spuds and fluffy mounds of Casava Flour fried with Eggs.
google avatar

Donna Y.

Yelp
This place is your definition of hole in the wall. The people are great. The food is delicious. What more can I say? I highly recommend getting the Farofa which is a toasted cassava or corn flour mixture with eggs and banana. Don't question it. Just get it you won't be disappointed.

Naveen N.

Yelp
Excellent tasting chicken with a wonderful seasoning. Service is fast and friendly. Limited seating available

Kelly K.

Yelp
Great chicken - fun atmosphere. I can see why Anthony Bourdain recommended it! It was packed and deservedly so.
google avatar

Francisco L.

Yelp
I came here because I saw this palce was in the list of Anthony Bourdain's places in Rio. The galeto or chicken sandwich was great, although for my taste a little dry. I had beer and was tasteful and very well served. Btw if you want the best caipirinhas in a tropical pub atmosphere this is the place!
google avatar

Savanna M.

Yelp
The final stop on our food tour, and of course we had to try the exact meal that Anthony Bourdain did. The food was absolutely delicious, with the garlic bread really being the star of the show! Still unsure how I feel about that scrambled egg side dish, but I'm glad we tried something new! Drinks are strong, and will creep up on you lol. The staff was inviting and warm, and treated us like celebrities as well! Bathrooms were clean and nice!
google avatar

Santina T.

Yelp
This restaurant was very nice. Food was quickly prepared and tasted delicious. Small little open restaurant in Rio. Had to visit since it was on Anthony's places to eat in Rio. There is a picture of him on the wall as soon as you walk in to the left. However no one speaks English. It's best to know a little Portuguese at least enough to order your food. I used google translate. Worked great!
google avatar

An H.

Yelp
Love this place. Get the chicken it comes with a farrofo and egg dish which was delish, some salad and ricez. But the chicken was DELISH! Easily feeds two people as well and if you are alone you will have left overs. Standard beer selection. We just kept the chopps coming. There steaks are also very tasty. Food is standard but yummy Brazilian. Desert we got the podim ala flan. Only sort bad thing is there outdoor seating us limitied manly because they dont have enough outdoor chairs or wont allow their indoor chairs outside.

Andre T.

Yelp
Incredible!! Just incredible. That chicken is to die for or should I say "Fly for". We even picked the bones. It was delicious. A must visit if you are Rio.
google avatar

Kimberly G.

Yelp
The rotisserie chicken is as good as all of the reviews mention. It was well-seasoned, moist, and super flavorful. One serving and the garlic bread certainly made a full meal!
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
This place happened to be very close to our hotel in Rio - and it popped up in a list of Anthony Bourdain's favourite Rio places to eat. It's casual and crowded, esp on the soccer game night we happened by. But the small grilled chickens (think one step bigger than a Cornish hen) were deliciously grilled and there plenty of sides with one "simple" and one "completo" - spring for the broccoli rice.
google avatar

Tamir G.

Yelp
Simple place. Hole in the wall. Picked it out of yelp. Happens to be famous local joint, especially after Anthony no reservation gave them a thumbs up. Waiting for my food I discovered they have wifi if you simply ask for it. Food was good. Definitely good for bar food. So if your looking for low key bar with food this is yo
google avatar

Derrick H.

Yelp
The food was amazing. I wanted to try the chicken hearts but was afraid. Lol. You wont be disappointed. The food was great.
google avatar

Rodrigo T.

Yelp
If you are looking for great chicken at an amazing price this is the spot! This locals favorite is always busy but getting a table never seems to be a problem. The staff are friendly and fast. The beers are always ice cold and go great with the garlic bread and chicken heats. I ordered the steak and it was so flavorful and cooked to perfection. This place is simply amazing! Thanks Anthony Bourdain for an amazing choice!! This will be my first stop next time I am in Rio!!!

Yelp
Galeto Sat's is what we would call in California, 'a hole in the wall' type of restaurant. Small interior but big on delivering delicious, what might amount to a Brazilian BBQ and drinks such as the Brazilian classic Caipirinha. When my girl and I first traveled to Rio De Janeiro, we had the fortune of randomly walking past this place, the smells of smoked meat flooding our noses. We immediately noticed how packed the place was with what seemingly looked like Cariocas (affectionate term for those who live and work in the city of Rio De Janeiro) & tourists and knew we had to visit before we left the city. On a night during the 2016 Olympics, while the Mens Brazilian Soccer team was on every bar tv playing a preliminary match, we made our way here for drinks and dinner. The atmosphere was fantastic and the the food was delicious. We ordered a platter of mixed smoked meat to share and were presented with bread and a cup of what I could best described as a type of Brazilian pico de gallo. This restaurant, Is one that I would recommend to tourists and Cariocas whom may not be aware of it (for some terrible reason) alike because its just that damn good. Also, I had Caipirinha's all over Rio this past summer, the best one, was ordered here. I would also challenge people to try Quick Galetos up the street towards Copacabana & this place and decide what for you was the better of the pair, as I would list both as the elites of the galeto/Brazilian BBQ style restaurant In the Copacabana section of town.
google avatar

Bernard M.

Yelp
Perhaps one of the best experiences in all of Copacabana. This restaurant truly delivers in the wide variety of their menu, ambiance, popularity and service. Came here because we saw Anthony Bourdain on CNN raving about it and he wasn't lying. The garlic bread here is one of a kind, the chicken is fantastic and their trademark appetizer, a shredded flavourful chicken on light tostada square, is ridiculous and one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth. We are very grateful for our visit here and would absolutely recommend this to any visitor to Rio de Janeiro to check out this restaurant.
google avatar

Rochelle B.

Yelp
We went here after seeing this local's botequin on Anthony Bordain's Rio de Janeiro episode. I'm glad we came. It is a small, quaint local's bar where the tables are all cramped together. The garlic fried chicken that Bourdain recommended was juicy and delicious. The bits of fried garlic matched perfectly with it. It was a bit pricey for an appetizer at BRL $24 which was USD $11, but tasty nonetheless. For our entree we shared a full order of pork Picanha completo (sides included). Price was BRL $52 which is about USD $24. The pork was roasted in a wood fired oven to perfection. The side dishes were Farofa mixed with scrambled eggs, French fries, white rice and salsa. We ordered Feijaoda (stewed black beans) to complete the meal. This was my favorite meal that I had in Rio de Janeiro.
google avatar

Pocket C.

Yelp
Try the linguica sausage. They alive it up nice so it is great as an appetizer with your beer. Also liked polenta fries better than the regular.
google avatar

James P.

Yelp
Straightforward grilled chicken. Moist and tons of flavour. Small, but went just after lunch rush and easy to get a table.
google avatar

Ralph M.

Yelp
Went there with colleagues after one said they were highly rated on yelp. He was very disappointed when we arrived. The place does not look like much. We were told the frango or chicken was great. We ordered chicken, beef and picanha suina or pork picanha. The picanha suina stole the show. They flew out that night. I went back the next day!
google avatar

S S.

Yelp
Absolute must do while in Rio. One of those small local spots that you might pass by without noticing. Trust me, once you go there once you'll definitely be a repeat customer. We had delicious: Galeto (chicken) and Picanha (beef steak). Plus it all comes with super tasty sides dishes... Oh and the garlic bread
google avatar

Mike P.

Yelp
On my first visit, I ordered the garlic chicken wings (frango a passarinho) and the pork sirloin (picanha simples). Despite being listed as an appetizer, the portion for the garlic chicken wings is massive, and is a suitable appetizer for 4-6 people. The wings were tasty and well seasoned. However, the real star of the meal was the pork picanha. The outside was seared, giving a slightly crispy exterior while the inside remained juicy. Absolutely delicious! The pork picanha left such a lasting impression that I visited the restaurant again a few days later. The appetizer this time was the garlic bread (pao de alho). The bread was slightly burnt, but otherwise, it hit all the right notes. The crispy texture and the mouth-watering garlic butter combined for a superb dish. For the entree, I ordered the same pork picanha. Unfortunately, the meat was WAY oversalted, bordering on inedible. There were two pieces of pork in the order: one was cooked right, and the other was overcooked. The overcooked piece was tough and rubbery. The inconsistency of this place leads me to detracting 1.5 stars. Also, the service is slow, and the waiters are not as attentive compared to other restaurants. This place is worth a visit, but you may need to send back orders for you to get that perfect meal.
google avatar

Ana D.

Yelp
Found this place because of Yelp! Went a total of three times when we were in Rio for two weeks. The first time, my boyfriend and I had their pastel- curry flavored shredded meat, 1/2 order of garlic bread- butter and GARLIC(should of got the full serving), and filet mignon completa- includes rice, beans, and fries. Everything was super good however it was a little pricey... The total was over 100Reals. The second time we went back with a group of friends and got 2 full orders of garlic bread and roasted chicken with garlic sauce. The sauce was ok. The third time me and my boyfriend ordered garlic bread, plain roasted chicken - no sauce, and an order of their grilled pork. Everything was great and we got full just from the meat. Really like this place and definitely a go to when in Rio.
google avatar

Shonnett S.

Yelp
THE BEST GARLIC BREAD I EVER HAD. I also had the Spring Chicken with orange sauce which was very good. We loved the place so much we came back a 2nd time. The 2nd time we each ordered our own garlic bread. You can see and taste the garlic right on top. This place was featured on Anthony Bourdain's show that is how we found out about it.
google avatar

Ken F.

Yelp
I am more of a beef over chicken person down here in Rio, but this is great BBQ! I have tried the rib eye and filet. And prefer the filet. The complete includes fries and rice with eggs, but the half portion is just too much for one. I ate with a small group a different day and we got the filet with crazy rice. AWESOME!
google avatar

Chrystin A.

Yelp
We didn't have much time to get out and try many different places, but out of the few places we tried in Rio, this was my favorite meal. The Galeto Ao Molho Sats, which is chicken in a lemon/orange/garlic/oregano sauce was so delicious! We also ordered filet mignon completo which came with fries, white rice and eggs coated in tapioca (Not completely sure if it was tapioca). Really delicious. Simple comfort food with good flavors. Affordable and filling. The restaurant/bar itself is tiny...you might have to wait for a table, but the turnover is quick . Will definitely go back if we find ourselves in Rio again someday (hope so!). (Visited in September 2015).

Yelp
Like previous reviews have stated, this seems like a local place, no English on the menu so have a plan before you go. That being said, it's totally worth looking like a buffoon and just pointing at the menu! We shared garlic bread (phenomenal!) the rotisserie chicken (YUM!), came with sides of rice, French fries and we each had a beer, only about $35 USD!!! Total steal for food this good!
