The 17 Best Historic Hotels in the World - AFAR

"A colonnaded Colombo icon on the island’s west coast that underwent a major restoration of its North Wing, modernizing guest rooms and public spaces while foregrounding history through Heritage Tours and an on-site museum. Highlights include a seaside restaurant and a new L’Occitane spa, plus quirky historic artifacts on display—everything from Prince Philip’s early personal car to a cannonball lodged in the building—and behind-the-scenes access to spaces with literary ties, such as the office where Arthur C. Clarke completed a novel." - Mary Holland

3 Days Around Colombo, Sri Lanka

"It’s an hour-long drive from the airport to the Galle Face Hotel, a colonial-era grande dame on the beach that's the city's most storied retreat. Check in and have a quick lunch on the verandah overlooking the sea..."

This is a fine old institution - the oldest hotel in Sri Lanka. There are no doubt a load of modern hotels in Colombo but none has the charm or position of the Galle Face. Cocktails overlooking the sea at sundown accompanied by a bagpiper in full Scots regalia. Salt water pool by the sea is beautiful. The main restaurant serves a glorious selection of curries and decent international fare. Staff unfailingly kind and attentive.

My wife and I had a lovely weekend stay at the Galle Face Hotel. The staff was incredibly nice and welcoming. We checked in very late in the evening and there were still multiple workers there for us to help take our bags into the hotel and to our room.||The breakfast buffet is a must! They have a great selection of food including western and Indian cuisine. ||The hotel is located near a big mall which was nice to visit. It was also very easy to hail a tuk tuk or taxi from Galle Face. ||The only negatives I have is that the hotel smells a bit musty and sometimes you would have to ask the staff a few times to get something done ie had to ask 3 times for something to be sent up to our rooms.||Overall though: it was a nice stay.

We really enjoyed our two night stay after a long flight to arrive in Sri Lanka. The hotel has a lovely ‘feel’ about it and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. |We particularly enjoyed a dinner at ‘Firebeach’ restaurant right in the waters edge at sunset. The dinner was very tasty and we were appreciative of Moneth’s friendly and efficient help.

Really enjoyed our stay at Galle Face Hotel. The room was clean and comfortable, the food was great, and the views were amazing. Hotel staff were friendly and professional — we were treated really well as local guests, which we appreciated. Only issue was with the spa. We were told there’s a 40% discount under the resident offer, which the hotel confirmed. But the spa staff said there was no such offer and weren’t helpful at all. There was a slot available, then suddenly it wasn’t. Later, the hotel admitted it was a miscommunication on their end and that the spa hadn’t been informed properly. Still, the way the spa handled it was disappointing, so we skipped it. That aside, everything else was great. Would happily return — just hope the spa team gets better aligned next time.

We bookended our wonderful Sri Lanka holiday with days at Galle Face hotel. The rooms are spacious, with gorgeous decor, very clean and comfortable, food absolutely delicious and the service exceptional. Special mention to Manoj who tirelessly called the airport to find out when my missing baggage would arrive. Try and get a heritage sea view room it is spectacular. We liked this hotel so much we changed our travel plans to get an I extra night here before we flew out.

The set course dinner at 1864 at Galle Face Hotel was a wonderful experience.|The waitstaff, Umar, was very attentive and looked after us well.|The food was classic and very delcious.|An amuse-bouche of a seafood tartlet with a fruit and cinnamon shooter started the evening.|First course was a seafood cocktail that layered flavour on flavour.|The main course was either barramundi or chicken. The barramundi was one of the best we have had. The chicken was expertly seasoned with a jus to die for.|Dessert was a banana flambé prepared at the table. The balance of sweet sauce to the inherent tartness of the banana worked very well.|We also had the matched wines with the dinner which overall were well matched and enhanced the dining experience.||We would highly recommend including this in your visit to Colombo.

We stayed at Galle Face Hotel under the resident offer, and it was a truly memorable experience. From the start, we were treated with warmth and respect — something not every hotel offers to local guests. The rooms were beautifully maintained, the food was flavorful and worth every cent, and the view was just breathtaking. The overall hospitality and the genuine service from the staff made us feel valued throughout our stay. One issue we encountered was with the spa. We had confirmed a 40% discount under the resident offer before arriving, and the hotel staff reconfirmed it at check-in. However, the spa team denied the offer and was quite dismissive, even though available slots were shown earlier. Eventually, the hotel acknowledged it was a communication lapse on their part. Despite a slot becoming available later, we chose not to go ahead due to how the situation was handled — not because we wanted anything for free, but because we expected the offer to be honored as promised. That said, the rest of the stay more than made up for it. Galle Face Hotel remains one of the most iconic and welcoming places we’ve stayed at in Sri Lanka, and we truly look forward to returning again.

We had a truly lovely stay at Galle Face Hotel. The location is exceptional — right by the ocean, with stunning views and a unique historic atmosphere. Our room was comfortable and elegant, and the overall setting perfectly balances charm and relaxation. The staff were warm, attentive, and professional throughout, and the food was excellent (especially the cocktails by the sea!). Despite a complicated start with the booking, the team resolved it with grace, and we left with only positive memories. Highly recommended — a timeless Colombo landmark worth experiencing.
