Where to Eat the Best Takeout on Galveston Island for Labor Day Weekend | Eater Houston

"The island’s largest microbrewery offering take-out beers and growler fills on weekends; standout brews include the award-winning Citra Mellow American pale ale and the Tiki Wheat, a coriander-kissed American wheat beer, with curbside ordering available by phone." - Brittanie Shey

Google
Fun place to try the local brew recipes. They have nightly events that sounded fun. I came to try the Tiki Colada and loved it!! Hubs tried the Octoberfest but didn’t like it, tasted like perm solution. And then had their light beer, the Low Tide - I think, and he liked that. The kitchen was backed up and we had dinner plans so didn’t try food this visit.

Google
Galveston island brewing is very much the ideal beach brewing experience. The bartender was very knowledgeable of all the beers and very patient as I sampled and chose my favorite brews. Their merch burned a hole in my wallet with their wide variety of options. My favorite part was the seating which puts you directly next to their brewing equipment when dining. There is just so much to love about this place do yourself a favor and check it out when you’re in the area.

Google
We stopped here and had a couple beers and a pizza. You can watch the guys working on brewing the beer--it looked like they were filling kegs when we were there, The Citra Haze IPA is their hazy IPA and loved it. Great atmosphere, super service, and great pizza. Thanks for a super time. Absolutely will be back when we are in Galveston again. Cheers!

Google
Great energy and vibe at this brewery. Fun staff, chill tunes while in line for a pint or two. Nice selection to cover most everyone’s tastes - we loved the Causeway Koelsch, the “Beach Please” Mexican lager ( try it, it’s fantastic) the IPAs and marzen.

Michael N.

Google
Damn, great beer selection great service and one of the best po boy sandwiches I ever had. Don’t let the front appearance and small cozy space fool you. This place has ice cold beer, great food and one hell of a great atmosphere. I highly recommend this place. Don’t forget to buy yourself a souvenir from their gift shop to remember this place for years to come.

First stop arriving in Galveston! Tasty beer and with a good munchie menu ! Chill staff and loved how roomy this brewery was ! ☀️🍻🍕

Google
Ethan is the man! Go in Tuesdays, discounts on 6 packs to go & pint glasses. See ya Tuesday. Great laid back spot, excellent Tiki Colada wheat, marzen oktoberfest & vienna lagers. May have to growler the latter 2. Their Tiki Colada is the definitive "island beer"

Google
First time visiting here. Loved it. It was very low-key, laid back, simple, and inviting atmosphere. Ethan the Tap Master was friendly and informative.

Yelp
Friendly and helpful bar staff!!! Great selection of beers. The Tiki Colada was fabulous. We had two flights and the pickle pizza which was very unique. It pretty fun to sit upstairs and overlooking brewery operations!

Yelp
Hundreds of Hops self-guided US Hop Passport Brewery Tour Amazing Brewery Stop 9/10 for Texas (about to win our 4th state- whoop) showed on maps as 55min from our Houston stay, actual time was about 1hr 40min, with traffic and traffic was THICK. The outdoor space here is fantastic, with lots for the littles to keep busy with. Indoors there was ample seating, and they have an upper level for adults only. Not surprisingly, most people were outside, we sat inside on the lower level. It was quiet. There was a decent selection of brews, including our preferred darks. The peanut butter porter pint was perhaps best enjoyed in a taster It was rather busy. Be sure to check out the bathroom 1 way mirror - trippy.

Yelp
Such a nice group of employees. We came to have a flight early Friday afternoon. Charday was behind the bar and she was very helpful. We enjoyed browsing over their wide range of beers and hearing her suggestions.

Yelp
Such a cute and chill spot! We came by to have a beer and play some cards, and it was the perfect setting. There's a great mix of indoor and outdoor seating, plus an upstairs area that overlooks the brewery--super cool vibe. If you're bringing kids, there's even a playground to keep them entertained, and the little gift shop is full of fun finds. I had the Beach Please Lager--light, refreshing, with just a hint of salt and lime (perfect beachy vibe). My friend went with the Citra Mellow IPA, which was smooth and flavorful. Both beers were delicious. Bonus points for the awesome music playlist that added to the laid-back atmosphere. I'd definitely come back!

Yelp
First time coming to this brewery and it was super chill. All the staff were great and very easy going! I ordered a flight and all the beers were so good! They have indoor seating with AC, an upstairs area that's 18 and older, and an outside area with a small playground for kids. Great place for everyone!
google avatar

Paula W.

Yelp
Great place for a beer when you're on the island. Staff will help you feel at home. I'm currently in love with the Dill beer. Their offerings change enough to keep everyone happy. Try it out!!!
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Great place to eat and drink!!!! It was my wife and I first time there, the staff was very knowledgeable and helpful! They are pet friendly everywhere except inside the brew room which made sense. You can have a sample tasting of every flavor.
google avatar

Jess B.

Yelp
Great beer selections. Music was on low.. couldn't hear it very well, unfortunately. After complaining about the Spanish tv selection he still did not change the channel. ( See Picture) Could be more tourist friendly. Might be back if it is a different bartender.
google avatar

Yelp
We searched for breweries on the Island, and chose this one. We arrived just in time to grab some beers and play trivia from 6-8 on a Wednesday night. It was a blast! Super great beer selection. Awesome bartender. Awesome trivia. And the outdoor seating area is so cool! Tons of seats and playground for kids! I plan to stop back by after our cruise for beer to take home!
google avatar

Alicia K.

Yelp
Beer was good, bathrooms were clean and servers had smiley faces. We would have liked an alternative to an $18 bottle of stout to take home, and the pretzels, while very tasty, were poorly presented with one packet of plain yellow mustard each and a microwaveable container of nacho cheese, which listed cheese down on the list of ingredients. Needs a little more pride of ownership and we'd give two more stars. Edited to add there was one stout in cans, but no prices listed at all that we could see for the to go offerings.
google avatar

Yelp
Great selection of craft beers, and unlike some small breweries, they all tasted different. We hit the place twice while we were there and on the second visit, tried a warm pretzel. We like their beer & taproom enough to buy a few of their logo wear. The wife has a hoodie, I've got a tin for the garage and a couple 6 packs I took home.

Kevin M.

Yelp
Great little place. Really cool atmosphere, friendly & helpful staff, and great selection of beers on tap!
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Galveston Island Brewing has come a long way since they started as a tiny micro brewery with only bar seating. The brewery has it all. Indoor seating is available near the taproom and in the brewing area, outdoor seating is ample in their patio and playground area which kids will love, the bar area has a gift shop, and the multiple restrooms are a nice touch. Beer wise, they're pretty solid. They tend to specialize in lighter beers like heffes and wheat ales. Those tend to compliment the hot humid coastal weather nicely. Absolutely avoid the sours! Don't expect much service after you order. While super friendly and chatty behind the bar, staff won't go out into the tables to check on you or ask you if you need anything - at least they didn't for our groups. And that's actually alright. They're helpful enough early on that we didn't need for anything. Parking is a little tight but available on the nearby streets as well.

Yelp
Staying at the State Park and cruising breweries (one per day). Craft beer life is good!

Yelp
One of my OG fav breweries , I don't think I've ever been here and not found something on the board for the day that I didn't just LOVE . There are so many seating options here too , you can sit outside in the sun , you can sit under the covering , you can sit inside by the bar , you can sit inside by the brewery equipment OR you can go upstairs where it's 18+ only . My kiddos love the pretzel here and honestly I've tried so many pretzels and I always would pick theirs , it's just the perfect amount of " gooey" in the center that keeps me wanting more . Did I mention that they also have a playground for the kiddos ? Staff are always super laid back and friendly , on Saturdays at 1pm they do FREE tours . Highly recommend stopping by .

Yelp
Galveston Island Brewing never disappoints! Stopped in for a beer and some birria tacos and birria ramen from The Shepherds Mix Food Bar, and enjoyed the delicious food and a fun and relaxing atmosphere that is the hallmark of an exceptional brewery. Service was top notch as always.

Yelp
My Uncle recommended stopping here. I did not partake but my dad loved it. The day was a bit on the cooler side but we still sat outside. Plenty of outdoor seating but there is still some tables/chairs indoors too. I couldn't believe how many people brought their little kids! We were actually the only ones who DIDN'T bring children! Seriously, there were probably 10 couples there, each with kiddos. There is a small playground outside. Would never have thought this was a family friendly place but apparently it is! Oh, and one couple had a dog too. Beers were great according to my dad and uncle. I don't drink too much so I didn't want to have a beer and drive home a bit tipsy (cough cough light weight). I'd LOVE to see a non alcoholic beer produced! There were a handful of food options but I couldn't recall any other than pretzels. Bartender was nice. She was the only person we interacted with. Bar kitty was friendly.

Yelp
Busy little brewery and we quickly found out why! We tried their Oktoberfest beer and it was really good. Of all the breweries we visited during this trip, they are the only ones selling steins, made in Germany! We had to get one of course, and because I checked in on Yelp, I got 10% off of it! How cool! The people were friendly as well. Another gentleman also bought a stein and ended up hanging out with us for a bit talking about more breweries around the area.
google avatar

Drew K.

Yelp
Best Beers in Galveston. The bartender was kind and knowledgeable. Normally an IPA guy but the Tiki Wheat was the favorite. It was light and crisp and balanced flavor perfect hot day beer. The he outside is shaded and there's a playground for the kiddos.

Yelp
Great Brewery for friends and family! I came after laying out on the beach all day. Perfect spot not too far from the seawall. In fact, minutes from the seawall! Always looking for different spots and it was nice to find this gem. I tried something a little different when visiting..I tried their Galveston Tiki Colada beer. I know!!! Calm down, give me a chance. I know it sounds gross and whatnot, but it wasn't! Great for the summer and sits light. They have all different types of house made beers I highly recommend. Until next time G.I.B!

Troy S.

Yelp
Not for vacationers, clearly locals hang here. People at the bar didn't even have shoes on, like the bottom of their feet was black, nasty! The music machine says not to play certain kinds of music or they'll turn it off!!! Good tiki beer, however they clearly don't care about promoting their beer or making money because their lack for vacationers coming in. Could be a really cool place, but the locals who hang there run in the ground.
google avatar

Toni V.

Yelp
We were there for a party. The beer is good, it is a brewery after all. Nice indoor and outdoor seating I didn't try there food truck. They have a small play structure, but it's tiny and only for kids younger than 5, maybe less. The older kids were bored out of their minds. I wouldn't bring mine again.
google avatar

Yelp
So much fun at bingo night at Galveston Island Brewing. Tons of interesting and unique options for craft beer - chocolate peanut butter and roasted coffee for the win. If the weather had been better, we would have take advantage of the large patio and playground. Fun and relaxing atmosphere. Food truck dining. A great venue for the whole family to enjoy.

Rebecca B.

Yelp
Pizza was good. Son and daughter-in-law tried 4-5 different beers. Enjoyed each one. Service was okay. Very busy when we were there. Nice place to meet and visit with other customers.
google avatar

Barbara P.

Yelp
Galveston Island Brewing was nice. We came for our friends birthday. I am not a beer drinker so I was happy to see soda and seltzers as an option. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating as well as some food options. They have board games that you can play while you drink and they were hosting a beer and yoga class when we arrived. They gave our friends their first beer free since it was their birthdays.
google avatar

Heather M.

Yelp
First time here after they updated and renovated. It looks great! I love the outside, save for one very big mistake on their part... the playscape. I've said it a hundred times and I'll say it again- children don't belong at breweries. If you can't enter a website under 21, you shouldn't enter the actual f-ing bar either. Those of us who hate kids appreciate the few places we can go with a guarantee that they won't be there, and I really wish breweries would understand this. The beer per usual was delicious and staff was very friendly. We ordered a pretzel and it was awesome! Almost got 2. They also have really great merch, from the shirts to the dog collars and everything in between.

Yelp
Galveston Island Brewing was our first stop into town, and we couldn't have picked a better place to stretch our legs (and get a fantastic pint) before our beach house was ready. The kiddos loved the playground. We loved the beer and vibe. I was particularly living vicariously through the retired "regulars" that were bellied up to the bar, talking to the sweet bartender. We're making GIB a tradition for when we first get into town.
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
What a great place to relax and unwind with a great brew in hand!!! I recommend the pretzel and then a 007 ......... maybe three 007's
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
Good food but great beer! We got the tiki wheat and it was delicious. The staff is friendly and the inside is nice and air conditioned. The outside has a good playground and plenty of space. We got the mufalatta and Italian po boy and both were good- nothing special but the price is fair. I would highly recommend checking this place out!
google avatar

Adriana S.

Yelp
Great little place with playground and yummy root beer for the kids. Short walk from the beach too.
google avatar

Jordyn M.

Yelp
The Ma-Donna was pretty good. The location is nice. I felt like they weren't too happy to see us walk in though. Maybe it was a busy day. I would return in the future if I were in the area. We didn't try any food so I would like to see what options they have.
google avatar

Brian R.

Yelp
We stopped in for a few beers. My favorite by far is the tiki wheat. Also tried a 4 flight of the various beers on tap. All was good. I really like the dark porters the best from the flight.

Yelp
Such a fun spot to hit up while in Galveston. My fiance and I were looking to kill some time one afternoon after lunch. We love checking out breweries and stumbled upon this one on Yelp. The parking lot was decent and they also offered overflow parking. They had plenty of outdoor, shaded seating as well as seating inside. We saw plenty of dogs and kids, so it's definitely pet and kid friendly. When you go inside their taproom, you will find a sign that says kids are not allowed to go upstairs. I found that to be quite nice. We sat up there and it was so cozy! We were able to snag two comfy chairs vs. one of their picnic tables. You could look down below you and see everyone sitting. While we were there, they had some people play some music, so that was fun. Overall, great experience - I would definitely recommend coming here for some brews while in Galveston.
google avatar

Angie G.

Yelp
GREAT local brewery! They have music and special events so check online so thay you can plan accordingly. There's a lot of outdoor seating (covered and uncovered) so make sure you bring your sunscreen. They are pet friendly and have a playground for kids. The beer selection is phenomenal!! I prefer the Red Ale, but they will have ANYTHING for your taste!
google avatar

Teri Theresa R.

Yelp
Sweet little brewery off the beaten track on the island. We sampled on 2 flights. My brother really liked the tiki wheat, daughter & husband enjoyed the plum saison, and I loved the stranded in a barrel. The beers all have their own good uniqueness!! The seating was mostly outside but it was a raining day & we choose to stay inside. Thankfully 1 of the 2 tables inside was available. There is construction going on so hopefully they are expanding for more inside seating.
google avatar

Gerardo C.

Yelp
Nice local brewery not far from the beach. Highly recommend the coconut hefe-a and Octoberfest
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
Cool brewery! Very busy on a weekend night but plentiful outdoor space for social distancing. Got the pit pat which is a chocolate peanut butter infused porter. Very nice haha
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
LOVE! Galveston only has a handful of breweries and we visited most of them during this trip. This is by far my favorite one! They are remodeling so parking is next to them. Look out for the signs! No food, but there was a food truck! Pet and kid friendly! They have a playground! Inside seating is small, however outside seating is large. We snagged a table inside and enjoyed the AC and great music. Bathrooms were so unique! Feminine products, hair ties and bobby pins were provided for the ladies! What!? Design your own flights and Saturday free brew tours are available. This will be a staple for us every time we come back to Galveston!
google avatar

Alex P.

Yelp
Cool vibes and great beer. Walking in there is a nice patio outside to bring kids and pups. Inside, the bartenders offered great recommendations based on what I like in a beer. I ended up getting some flights to try all of the beer. My favorites were Bada Bing and Math Is Hard (DIPA). They even had some live music and plenty of indoor seating. I didn't order any food but I saw the pretzel and it looked delicious
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
As a former craft brewer myself, I enjoy traveling around the state and even the country looking for fantastic beers. I also work in the beer and wine retail business. This is basically a small 20 barrel brewing company with 40 barrel fermentation tanks. This means that basically they provide enough beer for Galveston and perhaps Houston. However, they have this nice little tap room near the airport on Galveston. It is here that you'll find some of their more specialty beers that you will not find in the retail market. In other words it's worth visiting this brewery for their specialty beers and they do have some sandwiches, but you can read about those from other yelpers. If you are a beer aficionado, then this place is definitely worthy to be added to your "to do" list while on Galveston.
google avatar

Ann E.

Yelp
Top notch brews. Amazing and friendly service. The brewery and seating areas (indoor and outdoor) are comfortable and great for a date night or large group. Absolutely give them a try!
google avatar

Sandi N.

Yelp
Nice little Brewery at the coast. Decent selection of beer, although my Peach Session sour was not really a sour, actually it was more on the sweet side. I ended up getting a Kolsch as a second one . With each beer you grab a bag of free chips. Plenty of seating outside. Half under patio and the rest with umbrellas. My only complaint was that the music outside was very loud and Non-Stop reggae. Great if you're a reggae fan, but if not, a little goes a long way! Ample parking and nice bathrooms.
google avatar

Sven I.

Yelp
Good beer, nice outdoor seating, and cool environment. Parking is limited but you should check this place out. Watch the Facebook counter change when you place an order.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with Galveston. Always have been, always will be. And Galveston Island Brewing just increased that level of love I have for the Island by a few pints. Or maybe a keg. I've had It bookmarked in Yelp since they opened and I noticed a ton of reviews rolling in. Glad I was able to check them out over a holiday weekend. We rolled in with the pups, ordered a few beers from the inside bar and grabbed a picnic table on the patio. The brewery is kid and dog friendly. Fam friendly! There's a small playground, dog poop bags, dog water bowls; they also allow outside food. We ordered a few pints -- I think the Tiki Wheat was good. I want to return and try the Hefen-A and a few seasonal brews. Beers varied from ~$4-7. I had to get some merch, so I added a GIB pint glass to my collection. Shine on, Galveston Island Brewing Co.

Rey P.

Yelp
Anytime we make a trip to the island, we like to make a stop at Galveston Island Brewery. They do a great job of making a variety of tasty beers. There is plenty of seating to hang out and relax. Service is excellent. For those with Littles, there's playarea outside.
google avatar

Joon P.

Yelp
Fun spot with good beers. Only had the not the bay ipa and it hit the spot. Also has the pretzel to snack on and it was a nice pairing with the beer. Was getting hungry so we left as the 3 sandwiches on the menu didn't excite us and food trucks were not present that day.
google avatar

Fish B.

Yelp
Daytrip to get away and decided that Galveston Island would be our starting point. Sunday Funday indeed, with a hootenanny in the background and our two glasses of beer, we settled in to our seats as our adventure began. Pleasant service, delicious brews, and a relaxed atmosphere. I'm happy with their quaint and homey feel. A great place for the family

Shelby B.

Yelp
Great set up! Kid/family friendly- The tiki wheat was delicious! Didn't care for the sours, but enjoyed the flight option so happy we checked it out while in town.

Yelp
I live down the street. I brought a friend who loves beer. I don't drink beer but I wanted to show support to the locals that are kicking butt and taking names since they've been open. Cute place. Small but plenty of seating inside or out. Nice nice staff. Great sunsets in the evening. Each of the beer tanks (where it's made-brewed in the warehouse) each tank has a name...cute! Beer choices: Citrus Mellow Tiki Wheat 1/4 muffuletta roast beef hoagie Still don't like beer but, I'd go back most definitely My friend loved it all. BUY LOCAL SUPPORT LOCAL
