Austin Taco Truck Asador Is Opening in East Austin | Eater Austin

"The university campus event space has added executive pastry chef Daniel Benavidez, who will work under executive chef Jason Cunningham to oversee pastries across the center and its hotel, the Carillon. Benavidez—whose past positions include roles at Moody Gardens Hotel in Galveston and the Omni Austin Hotel—has introduced new desserts such as a carrot cake with coconut caramel sauce and candied carrots, a warm apple cranberry crispy, and a chocolate mousse cake made with Shiner." - Nadia Chaudhury

Really great convention center! Went here for 2023 Western National Championships (gymnastics meet) . It was really great! Place very organized, nice elevators, great ballrooms, FREE parking deck underground, and very well laid out and convenient! We highly recommend checking this place out or hold an event here! Totally recommended!

I've attended several events here. The conventions are always pleasant, the views are beautiful, and there is lots of seating areas you can take a break when you need to. The parking garage is HORRIBLE though. There is very little signage & the curbs at the exits are designed so poorly. You can't get out without damaging your car unless you drive a tiny smart car.

Came here for a sports event. It's located right across from the beach, multiple hotels nearby for lodging, Starbucks at Kroger next door. There's one big exhibit hall with many smaller conference rooms. Overall decent venue.

Lone Star Rally 2025, was great. Traffic, was controlled. Friendly and family oriented. Restaurants were fabulous. The vibe was excellent.

We went to this facility for my son's graduation from Texas A&M. Although it was crowded, the multiple levels of parking in the garage made it easy to find a spot, plus it was free. Plenty of room inside for such a large event. An added bonus is that it's right on the beach, but you'll be dealing with a significant amount of traffic during peak hours (middle of the day and early evening).

A wonderful facility. Plenty of parking underground with elevators and stairs to easily get to the 1st floor. They offer attendies ample board during conference meetings with full spreads for breakfast and lunch. It is well-maintained with regards to comfortable temperature. The bathrooms are spotless as well. I would enjoy another conference there again.

Yelp
I'm gonna be honest here, I was impressed by this place. The size is very accommodating, and can definitely fit just about anything in here. While I was here for a training event, they definitely made use of the space. For a majority of the time we had used the space mostly downstairs. When I say that the space here was huge, it was. The one day our event was going on downstairs and the area high school was starting their prom upstairs. As we were closing up for the day, the prom was coming in for the evening. Honestly, you wouldn't have known there were two different events happening at once in this building. I also would like to point out that the Convention Center itself is part of a bigger complex of buildings. If you have the ability to spread out your event you can use spaces in the hotels that share the complex. As far down as the San Luis I believe. One perk of using this space, and if you set it up, you can have a shuttle running between the many hotel buildings and the convention center. Sure beats having to walk the long blocks to get here. The only downside here is the amount of air conditioning being blasted from the rooms. I understand if there is a huge event with tons of people, but when you are sitting next to an empty room with no one in it, that air can make you think that you are sitting in the arctic. The biggest highlight of this space is the view. You have a great weather day outside and you get some beautiful views of the Gulf.

Yelp
This is the second time that we visit the Galveston Island Convention Center for the Winter Beach Blast which is a gymnastics competition. This convention center is lovely and right across from the beach. It is 2 stories with multiple different size rooms. I wish I had thought about getting a picture of the lovely chandelier that was n the room that we went to upstairs and pictures of this beautiful convention center but I didn't. I was in gym mom mode and not yelper mode. Oops lol!

Yelp
Been several times since 2013. Very nice (huge) venue with enough indoor parking. Lots of events go on here from all over the USA, as well as, locally in Texas.

Yelp
We're so upset that due to the inhouse catering by red dot indian cuisine, our event was a disaster. Abhijeet and his team scammed us with the Indian catering at the Galveston convention center. He told us he had a well-known chef we knew was cooking the food and in the taste testing, he made us try good food. In the actual event, the food catered for 500 people was nothing like the taste test. We called that chef and turned out he was never even involved. In the middle of the event, our guest left early due to their stomachs feeling upset and people throwing up. Guest literally showed us frozen bread pieces with the white defrost still on it. The food was like baby food. The biryani had no meat. The guests called us and called the next day informing us that they got food poisoning, their kids were throwing up, and the food was really old. This was so embaressing for our family. My family's event was really bad due to guest leaving early. The food was undigestible. We're so sad that san Luis Galveston convention center has such bad in house catering from Red Dot cuisine.

Yelp
I will say the staff was polite and the facilities were clean, while I was there for a four day conference recently. One of the main drawbacks is simply the lack of restrooms and lack of space. The convention I attended ended up having to have some of the presentations at the San Luis resort and Hilton hotel. Walking there isn't a drag, if you have the proper shoes, and they did provide a shuttle, but it was never clear where it was and what time it would pick up people to take you to the other two locales, making walking the most efficient way to get from place to place. There were a lack of vending machines and the "store" that opened was at 11 a.m. during the middle of presentations I was attending. I think if there were more drink options, be it coffee, a soda machine, or something else, with snacks for those long conference days, it would help sustain your attention span. There are restaurants down the street, which you are encouraged to attend, but I feel that sometimes a restaurant is a bit too much, and I would have preferred the convenience of say a nutrigrain bar, had there been a vending machine. I think for this convention center to stay successful, it will need to continue partnering up with the San Luis resort and Hilton hotel, while adding small amenities, so that people don't start having conferences at the hotels, rather than the conference center.

Yelp
We come to this facility every year for NASA-sponsored conference, brining together scientists from across the country and around the world. Everyone seems to enjoy the meeting, and it's a great layout for the number of people who attend. Plenty of room to have a poster session (with a cash bar to facilitate discussion and creative thought), large spaces for plenary talks to the whole group, and rooms that are smaller or can be subdivided for specialty lectures. The parking underneath the building is convenient (although the entrances and exits can be tight in a larger vehicle), there are several hotels close by, and there are plenty of restaurants on the island from which to chose. This NASA meeting is in the winter time, so it is good timing to miss the crowds that descend on the island in the warmer months.

Yelp
This place is very nice to have a convention. The people there are very hospitable and knowledgeable about their job. They are aim is to make sure that you are taking care of. Whatever you need whether it is food drinks or something to do with the classroom they are there to make sure that everything goes well. There is no I will get back to you later they will fix it right then and there. They prepare delicious food whether you want a $5 menu or a $25 menu per plate they have it there. I will highly recommend this place for anybody that is holding any type of convention or conference.

Yelp
I highly recommend Galveston Island Convention Center. It's a great venue for a conference or event and David Townsend and his staff give incredible customer service!

Yelp
This is a very nice facility. We hosted an event with about 3000+ people and used the small ballroom downstairs. It was a good sized room but didn't allow enough room to fit our competition floor, judges stage, sound booth and all the competitors and spectators comfortably. We ended up having to rotate out the spectators as their team came on the mat. It was almost like a revolving door. Come in, watch your team, go out this door. It worked luckily! Apparently there is another ballroom upstairs that is twice the size that we will be utilizing next year! Overall its a nice facility. Plenty of bathrooms and tons of space to move around in the main entry. There was enough room for our vendors to post up in the entry without being in the way of people walking through. The facility staff were very friendly and incredibly helpful when it came to our every need. I look forward to using this facility again next year.

Yelp
Beautiful. Attended a two day conference at this locale. I especially enjoyed the food provided. Everyone commented on how utterly delicious it was. The staff is attentive and behave totally professionally. No cell phones out, ready smiles....win win.

Yelp
Eh, it's ok, not laid out well as bathrooms are far away from the actual meeting rooms. Both rooms stalls are not plentiful either. It is clean and well maintained and the staff is helpful. But a convention center is all about layout, if that is not done well then it's not the place to be.

Yelp
I have attended several shows here ie Home Show, Dog Show etc and the place is great. Its large and the entrance hall faces has high ceilings andfaces the Gulf. There are plenty of restrooms that have always been clean and well stocked when I was there. The three adjacent hotels make a great place to stay if you are attending or exhibiting for a few days. Along with the hotels and resort there are several restaurants on the property from breakfast, lunch and dinner from cheap to fine dining. Im just wondering that if and when gambling is finally past in Texas if this place will remain a convention center or will become a giant casino?

Yelp
Nice room, friendly staff but the Flatscreen in the room is poor quality. Everything else is great. The Service was exceptional!

Yelp
This is a very nice venue for a convention. I went for a nursing convention and they had a nice size room for the main sessions and several break-out session rooms that comfortably fit everyone. The meals provided were delicious and the staff were very readily available. The scenery is absolutely fantastic since it is right on the Seawall. I would highly recommend this facility for any events.

Yelp
My mother is a local artist that was asked to exhibit her work by a company doing a conference at the convention center. The elevators were turned off from the parking garage by the handicapp parking places and a sign placed saying take the stairs. The east entrance outside the building has a ramp but those doors were locked with paper on the doors saying no entry as well. The only other way a person with mobility issues could access the building would be the front entrance but it was also blocked with huge equipment trucks and cones. No ADA access for her to enter the center where her art was being displayed. The convention center said the client requested the elevators be turned off from the garage. Why would the convention center allow a client to do this? As local residents we were extremely disappointed that Galveston would have such a large venue with no handicapp access-and purposely done. It ruined the experience for my mother and it caused a lot of stress in the extreme heat. Even after telling them they did not unlock the elevators by the handicapp spots or unblock the doors the next day. Truly a discriminatory situation against handicapp people.

Yelp
Pretty nice facility. Great view of the gulf. Temperature was good for an event of this size. Loading dock area is undersized and makes larger events with multiple vendors difficult to organize.

Jea E.

Yelp
Attended smallish conference here. Biggest complaint was the IT staff. A presentation stalled in every session, even though they were using the IT staff's computer only. And the microphone situation? Akkkkkkkkkkkk feedback central, and no discretion as to how to fix them without blowing everyone's ears out. Now if the IT staff doesn't work for the convention center directly, then the only complaint I have is the mediocre and overpriced food available at the center. But isn't that part of the joy of conferences?

Yelp
This place has great mojitos! When I arrive I see "The mojito Bar" which offers all different flavors. I tried the skinny Mojito first. I was offered a rasberry Mojito and I almost committed to that but opted to compare the skinny vs regular Mojito. The Skinny was much better surprisingly! I ordered the fish tacos and they were great for outdoor bar food and the service was great considering the outdoor poolside environment. I stayed at the hotel last year and honestly wasn't too impressed but coming back here for an afternoon brunch is something ill definitely come back for. The menu offers burgers, fish tacos, ago tuna crab and shrimp ceviche and chips and salsa and guac. Not an extensive menu but like I said for a pool aide beach resort its pretty great.
