Gam Gam - Review - Cannaregio - Venice - The Infatuation

"Gam Gam is a kosher restaurant that’s open all day. So if you want a casual dinner at 6pm, or are desperate for lunch at 3pm, this is the place. The real draws here are the Mediterranean dishes, like the Specialty Of The House, an impressive amount of tiny plates that range from creamy hummus with a slick of tahini down the middle to fried cubes of eggplant. The charif hot sauce served on the side adds flavor and zing to everything. There’s also subtly spiced couscous topped with stewed vegetables or beef that’s particularly hearty. The straightforward inside space has bright lights and good air conditioning (important), but the tables with big umbrellas along the busy Cannaregio canal are really the place to be." - Gillian McGuire

Food was uniquely flavored. Everything tasted great! The service was a little laid back and it was my father’s bday and we had requested a cake with a candle (we would pay for) but it was brought out with hesitation. As if they were embarrassed. It ruined the special occasion. Other than that, clean and decent restaurant for a regular dinner.

I was late and came near to closing time because of delay in train, Came very tired and hungry and was sure they won't let me in, The staff welcomed me and made sure I got everything I need with kindness and patience even though it was near closing time, didn't rush me at all. Great experience with special food and amazing service, Also got take away for weekend, Every dish was so good, Thank you for bringing the best!

Google
A must of Venice! Kosher or not, this place is amazing. The food was so fresh and delicious. We got Shabbat take out and it was all made fresh and packed that afternoon and so good! We went again for lunch and had delicious fresh pasta and other dishes. They are very friendly and prices are reasonable! They also have outdoor seating by the canal which is really nice! A short walk from the main train station too. You have to go!!

I disappointed after 12 years visit. Service was very poor and slow. Pasta was very oily, salmon was cold. Massa baca Eggplant starter was very good I do not recommend Gefilte Fish

Google
This is a review for kosher-specific hence the 5*. The service is very good, all the staff are nice and friendly and the food came quickly. The knedilach soup was very good and the chocolate mousse. My mum really liked the meal itself, we had the pargit and the pappardelle with mushrooms.

This kosher restaurant in the heart of the Venice Jewish Ghetto is everything one could hope for. The menu offers an excellent variety of fish and vegetarian dishes, each prepared with exceptional care and bursting with flavor. Every bite showcased the perfect balance of freshness and seasoning, making for a truly memorable dining experience. The ambiance complements the meal, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere that reflects the rich cultural history of the area. Service was attentive and friendly, further elevating our visit. A word of advice: be sure to make a reservation in advance, as this hidden gem is understandably popular. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a unique and delicious culinary experience in Venice!

This was one of our highlights of Venice fpr sure! If I comeback ten more times, I'm gonna come to Gam Gam every time Perfect food, very good food, very good portion for great price. Staff makes you feel like home and that's what you feel in this place. I would highly recommend this to everyone. You have to try it! P.s: don't worry about the seagull, they let it go immediately 😁😂

Yelp
Stopped here for a quick lunch Run here don't walk this place is absolutely phenomenal!! 5+++++++++++/5 We were looking for kosher in the city and a real taste to jewish / levant cuisine This place does not disappoint The falafel was absolutely phenomenal so fresh and fluffy wow paired with our hummus beef dish it was absolutely perfect We got the Israeli mix salad platters with different salads Absolutely filling and delicious taste ! Venice is so lucky to have this place located in the beautiful jewish ghetto definitely worth trying Service was great a lil slow but I feel it's a european thing .. but as soon as your order is in the food comes out fairly quickly!! Had a fantastic experience and will definitely be back here soon Cheer

Yelp
Great food, kosher or not I suggest dining here. It is a Small restaurant, but we were able to get a table for two at 5:30without a reservation but by 7:00 it was very busy. For appetizer I suggest the gam gam sampler, which has a bunch of small plates of dips and vegetables, All delicious. For dinner we had the baked fish that came with potatoes and the paparadelle with meat sauce. We recommend both everything was enjoyable and the price was very reasonable.

Yelp
Loved the ambiance! The food was pretty good as well and even though waiters here don't expect tips, they treat you very well. We tried the crispy sardines and they were delicious as was the pasta and everything else we tried. Definitely check it out if you're in Venice.

Yelp
It's historical place in Venice! Kosher / Italian place As a tourist visiting Venice after Rome, I was looking forward to a different style cuisine with spices and flavors and Mediterranean food was perfect for my liking! Me and my family did a lot of tours and on the last stop , someone recommended to visit this restaurant and we were not disappointed! Food , service it was amazing and how people who work there truly care about visitors! We got lucky and even got some music going as well!

Linda A.

Yelp
House wine- highly recommend! Buying a bottle to take home. The fried artichoke is absolutely amazing as is the chocolate mousse. We ordered the Gam Gam house special for an appetizer, a taste of Israel, it was so so good! Highly recommend that too. Main dish tagliatelle with meat sauce was good. Server was very helpful and kind.

Yelp
Enjoyed a delicious lunch here - there is something for everyone and nice to get an A/C break from the heat and humidity. The whole family enjoyed their meal and it was perhaps the only place in Venice without ripoff prices. Just make sure you visit the restaurant and not the bakery up the road. Highly recommend for value, service and wonderful food.

Yelp
This was our best meal in Italy. Get a reservation! We walked in and the man said we take reservations only (dinner time). As we started to walk out he said come back in 15 minutes, and I'm glad we did. We started with latkes and applesauce, it was delicious. The applesauce is made from scratch and the latkes are crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. I only wish there were more than two in an order. For dinner we got schnitzel and tagliatelle with meat sauce. Amazing! Amazing that a kosher restaurant had the best pasta we've had in Italy. The schnitzel was perfect, boneless chicken with a nice, not oily, fried breading. We also ordered a side of grilled vegetables and they were so good.

Yelp
With all the incredible food in Venice, this was one of our favorite meals! Loved the menu, service was friendly and very helpful, and ordering several dishes to share is the way to go. Flavors are authentic to the history and culture of the Jewish Ghetto. Try the hummus with mushrooms, fried artichoke, chicken shawarma, or eggplant with tomatoes. All delicious!!

Hana C.

Yelp
This restaurant was delightful. All courses were splendid and the house wine complimented the taste of each meal very much. I got the meat and quinoa and it was lovely. 10/10 recommend!

Yelp
The food was literally so bomb and the employees were so nice! Great location too! I did get locked in the bathroom but I think that's just user error :)

Karam Q.

Yelp
First, the lady who was serving us was so rude and was upset that we don't understand what is she trying to say as we don't speak Italian. After having breakfast which was awful, we tried to pay and she said they only take cash. I told the lady there is nothing mentioned about just taking cash. She said there is a nearby ATM. I offered here $10 US dollars which approximately 9.8 euros. She said no. I ended up paying her 11 dollars so we can leave in peace. Do NOT eat in this place!

Yelp
Gam Gam is a solid Jewish restaurant in Venice. the menu is vast so you have many things to pick from. service could certainly improve, it was hectic and confusing at times. the appetizer sample comes with a lot of small dishes to give yourself a taste of what's available. it was interesting. the hummus and baba ganoush were prepared in a way i haven't tasted them before. I can't say i prefer gam gam's version but, they weren't bad. eggplant ghetto style - it was just ok. pieces of eggplant cut up in different styles - it's actually a cold dish. the sea bass (17€) is a must try if you love fish. it was so damn good. it was cooked perfectly and the flavor of the actual fish stood out well. highly recommended. Fallafels were really really good, taste so fresh as well. overall, Gam Gam has good food and is worth checking out.

Yelp
Great food in a great location. It's right on the canal. If you're in Venice, don't miss this. One of our favorite meals.

Yelp
We got the meat hummus and the meat pasta. Both were amazing and the hummus was a nice shift from all the pasta we had been having. Prices are very reasonable and

Yelp
Food was really good here. Batter fried artichoke was a standout. Need a reservation, but I'd definitely go back next time in Venice.

Yelp
You know what you need after a long day of walking around in Venice? Latkes and wine. Just in case you dont know in order to make a latke all you need is some TLC, 2 times the amount of ingridients for a normal potato pancake and deep fry that stuff with lots of oil and you have a hearty meal. Throw in some light italian kosher wine and you have a delightful meal. Located in a corner of the ancient ghetto this is a little gem that I have been to a few times on my various trips to Venice. one of the great hidden gems of the world

Yelp
What a great stop after learning a bit if the history of the Jewish diaspora at the Museo Ebraico in Venice's Jewish Ghetto. An international, friendly staff is welcoming and informative. It is conveniently located on the Cannareggio Canal. The Israeli appetizers are sweet (carrots, raisins), tart (tomatoes), savory (ethereal falafel), and nuclear (harissa). As a person who makes matzoh ball soup, it's not like my home made, but good for the tourists. The pumpkin soup, however, is righteous: toothsome, sweet and savory at the same time. To sum up: if you are nearby, don't miss either the Museo Ebraica or the nearby restaurant, Gam Gam.

Yelp
I know it may seem like an odd choice to go for Kosher when you're in Venice, but this is no ordinary Kosher food. All their dishes are influenced by the rich Jewish history of living among Italians for hundreds of years. You definitely won't find this kind of food anywhere else, not even in New York. Every dish blew my mind (except the gefilte fish, which is just not my thing and I'm yet to try one that I like). Ordered the Assaggi Israeliani, a mixed appetizer consisting of many tiny dishes of various marinated veggies, hummus, homemade hot sauce, and stuff like that. Also got the beef & eggplant moussaka and the beef kebab. The meat on the kebab was slightly on the drier side, but the seasonings more than made up for it. The moussaka was insanely delicious and flavorful. I would come back here just for the goulash!

Yelp
They ran out of meat [not chicken]. If your eating here it's for kosher food, so not cool. Poor planning and the place was typical busy. So disappointed.

Yelp
My meal at Gam gam was one of the most memorable meals of my time in Italy. The service my friends and I received was impeccable, truly one of the nicest I've received anywhere. This was some of the best Israeli food i've ever had! The server recommended that we try every appetizer, so we just followed his lead...and boy am I glad we did! We had hummus, pita bread, fried artichokes, babagounsh, cous cous, marinated vegetables, and latkaes with apple sauce, and everything was amazing! I salmon for my entree and it was out of this world. A very memorable evening and meal! The server even invited us back for dinner the next night, but we were leaving Venice before then. Shame!

Yelp
Spent quite a bit of time in Israel and I'm Italian. This has been by far the best meal we have had yet in Venice. Highly recommend no matter what type of food you are looking for. You don't have to be Jewish to LOVE this place!
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
We tried Israeli food for the first time, in Venice, of all places. For apps we shared the pasticcio gam gam (must try) and latkes. Main courses we had the shwarma, kabab(beef patty), zuppa pollo and assaggi israeliani lasagna. The food reminded me of home cooked Traditional Russian food which reminded me of home. Servers are friendly and speak good English. Very good Israeli wine as well. Would come again.

Yelp
We had just arrived in Venice at Night and a lady with her two kids was very kind in helping us get to our hotel! During our 15 min walk we asked for restaurants suggestions in Venice and she mentioned she owned this restaurant...GAM GAM! We had to try it. We went there for lunch and the place was packed! But we still managed to get a table for 2. Service was great and fast, good price, and very good food. They have a mix of italian and Jewish food. Make sure you make a reservation.

Yelp
Break away from all the pizza and pasta and try some delicious Jewish food in one of the most famous areas of Venice. For a moment, you won't even feel like you're in Italy!
google avatar

Harshitha R.

Yelp
We got a table right by the canal. So the meal was off to a great start already! We had the house wine- pretty good. The food was amazing. I ordered the vegetarian lasagna and it was heaven. The service was good too. Definitely one of the best in Venice!

Yelp
We were wandering the streets and wanted to find a local spot to eat. I did a quick search and saw that this place got some good reviews. The only problem was that my google maps showed the wrong location. Luckily we asked a local and he kinda pointed us in the right direction. It is located on the banks of one of the canals, but the entrance is on a side ally. IT is a very small restaurant but was packed. Fortunately, they had 1 table for 6 people around 1pm. ambiance: Nicely decorated hole in the wall type of place. Great for small groups (I would recommend a reservation). Tables are fairly close together. I didn't see outdoor seating. Restrooms are clean. They were rebuilding them so you have to wash hands in the bar area. Service: Very good overall. They all spoke fair amount of english and was able to explain all of the dishes. Bread was constantly being refilled. Food came out in typical fashion. Appetizers coming out fast, and main dishes a while longer. Food: For a party of 6, we ordered 2 antipastas, 1 soup, 2 pastas, and 2 main and it was plenty. We started off with the Gam Gam appetizers which included 9 different antipastos and falafel. All were different and good. We also had hummus with minced beef. One of my favorite. i had never had meat with hummus before. It was really good and went well with this spicy green sauce they gave us. The matza ball soup was very nice and clean tasting. i had the Spaghetti salmon pasta which was unique. Salmon was cooked nicely and went well with the pasta. We also tried their version of the fried artichoke. Very much different than in Rome. They cut it into pieces and battered. The sauce was good though. We also got the branzino. Very nicely cooked. My son wolfed it down in an minute. We also had the chicken schwarma. This was probably my least favorite dish. Value: Price was excellent for the quality that we got. I would definitely recommend.

Yelp
We ordered eggplant four ways as an appetizer. The babaganoush was garlicky, creamy, and rich. I ordered the spaghetti with salmon. It was très flavorful and I finished the basket of bread off with the sauce. He ordered salmon with lemon with potato wedges. Fresh and succulent with especially delicious ultra citrusy lemon. Our initial choice was Pontini Trattoria next door but the line was too long. He says "any line is too long" We were pleased.

Yelp
We were visiting the Jewish ghetto for the day and wanted to try some great kosher style middle eastern food. We ordered the fried artichoke hearts and they were absolutely incredible!! We also got the platter as an appetizer and everything that came with it was so delicious! This place is an absolute must while visiting the Jewish ghetto!! Great prices and a great view if you sit outside!
google avatar

Sara J.

Yelp
We were in the jewish ghetto and asked a local for a good jewish deli. He said to come to Gam Gam. Please note!!!! There are 2 locations, one that is the deli and the other that is for dairy/egg dishes. I did not know there were two locations so when I asked what deli options they had, it really offended the owner. Walk two doors down and you will find the restaurant. My husband ordered the sardines which was sooooo good. Simple ingredients but very well done. I ordered the appetizer dish which was so-so. It was a great place to stop for lunch but we wouldn't return and I'm glad we didn't go for dinner. It's worth a try if you are in the area!
google avatar

Yelp
Great Jewish restaurant near the Jewish getting in Venice. We ate right on the canal and was even serenaded by a local with some traditional Italian songs. I love how they served many of our dishes like the humus and carrots in great little leaf-shaped bowls. The food was full of deliciousness and if you are in Venice for more than a minute I would say this is worth the experience.

Kwiyoung B.

Yelp
Delicious hole in the wall that's dairy-free because they serve meats and is kosher! Perfect for vegetarians and vegans. Make a reservation so you are guaranteed a table. So far it's my fave restaurant for healthy fresh food! Don't miss the Gam Gam specialty appetizer!
google avatar

Mary M.

Yelp
Food was fabulous. Service was great. So many wonderful things to taste. So glad we decided to try this place. Recommended by our hotel! What a gem. Mix between Kosher, Italian and middle eastern!

Yelp
Tired of Pasta in Venice? Gam Gam has great Mediterranean food. The interior is small but nice. Great service. if you are in the neighborhood, this is a great pick. Get here early to avoid waiting.
google avatar

Tori L.

Yelp
This place was amazing. The food was so authentic and delicious. Everything was prepared fresh. It felt as if you were at your grandmas house. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We got the matzo ball soup, the shawarma, pasta with meat sauce, and the gam gam special appetizer. Everything was to die for. I would highly recommend this place to everyone who is traveling to Venice!
google avatar

Natalise K.

Yelp
Had a really lovely lunch at Gam Gam. After being in Venice for a few days, you miss vegetables because they are hardly on any menu. But Gam Gam has plenty! We shared the vegetable sampler appetizer, which was very good. I missed LA's Jerry's Deli, so I ordered the Matzo Ball soup. It was different, but not bad. I'd highly recommend if you are looking for a good meal that is slightly different than your normal Italian fare (though they do have spaghetti options, as well).

c s.

Yelp
Terrible. Overhyped. Overpriced. Underwhelmed. Disappointed. They cater to the captive audience who gave no choice but to eat there. That's unfortunate. I'm glad this restaurant exists for their purposes but as a kosher in the house and vegetarian out if the house, this place just stunk. The fresh salad was cut tomatoes and cucumbers with no seasonings, salt, dressing it taste. The bread they serve is 30 seconds from becoming croutons on its own. We had the schnitzel, eggplant 4 ways, pargit, and beefsteak. Blah. Needed seasoning. The bathrooms are *filthy*. There are cleaner public toilets around Venice. Save your money. Skip it.
google avatar

Scott O.

Yelp
After a week of pizza and pasta we needed a break. We saw this one last year and put it on our list to visit if we returned. Grabbed a table by the canal for a late lunch and ate our way through the menu. Fried artichokes, hummus with meat, kabob, shawarma, schnitzel and a tagliatelle. Everything was great. Beer selection was down to Heineken and Corona. Both hot. Otherwise an amazing meal in the Jewish Ghetto. Another spot off the beaten path that is a must.
google avatar

Tanya B.

Yelp
Ok, let me first say the food was pretty good. I had a matzo ball soup (4 out of 5, because it could have been a few degrees hotter) and the latkes (4 out 5 because while delicious, they were tiny and only two). But the service was completely ridiculous. I don't know if they didn't have their normal staff there because it was the afternoon of New Year's Eve, but the six servers seemed completely overwhelmed serving maybe 15-18 tables. First, the host asked me to come back in 30 minutes, even though there were tables open. Ok, I had walked for an hour to get to the Jewish Ghetto so I went and had a Spritz nearby while waiting. When I returned, I saw them turn away group after group, including tired hungry families with children even though there were plenty of tables free. It was crazy. At one point, I moved to another small table against the wall so a family of five could have my table with another empty one pushed together and the host still turned the family away, telling me he "needed to rest!" (Assuming they started working at lunch, he would have been on the job for maybe four hours at this point). When my water came, the server slammed it down on the table without a glass. I was in Italy for over two months and this never happened at any restaurant. I saw no sign of anybody over 30 managing this place, and the results were obvious. When I asked for the bill (nobody ever came by to check on anything my entire meal) the host/server said yes and totally forgot. When I finally got up, put on my coat, and went over to ask him about the bill, he suggested I go into the kitchen/prep area and ask a server for the bill for table 27!!! At this point I gave him an incredulous look and carefully repeated back to him what he said - I think he realized he had crossed a line. I would never go back to this place with so many other amazing options in Venice. The ambiance is also extremely sterile for Italian standards, bright light, nothing beautiful plus overall, they just don't make you feel like they give a hoot about whether you eat there or not. Try Trattoria Pontini nearby - it's wonderful!
google avatar

Aaron S.

Yelp
Dress code: Dressy is misleading. My wife and I ate here on our stop to Venice and the food and atmosphere was great. But we wanted to clarify that most people were wearing jeans and tennis shoes, even the servers. You wont be out of place if you are dressed nicer than that, but don't feel like you need to change after a long day of sight seeing. So dress casual and enjoy the amazing food.

A. P.

Yelp
This place was my great for me, a vegan person struggling to eat in Venice. The gam gam specialty of the house was perfect! Warm sliced pita and falafel with abundant sides went together perfectly. Staff were friendly as well.
google avatar

Taylor J.

Yelp
Must try! The schnitzel was yummy! Can't go wrong with this kosher option. Great location where gondolas pass by.
google avatar

Bobby F.

Yelp
After a couple weeks traveling with my wife in Italy, we were very much looking for a break from the heavy pasta/pizza meals we've been stuffing our face with. My wife is a vegetarian and she found this restaurant. We loved it! The food is fresh and delicious. It tasted like a home cooked meal. We are sad we only had one opportunity to eat here.
google avatar

Sirisha N.

Yelp
The food was really good . They have good vegan and vegetarian stuff which are hard to find . The staff was friendly and very helpful . Must try are gam gam special and fried artichoke .i would like to visit again

Nechama S.

Yelp
Rating- 4.5 Amazing kosher option in Venice. Ask the waiter for recommendation and order from that.
google avatar

Noam M.

Yelp
This was the best meal I had in Venice. I had the papardelle and the masa'bacha, both were really yummy, and the fresh bread was great too. The server was really nice (which was truly the exception in this town). And it was really nice eating outside, right on the canal. And there was no cover, and reasonable prices!

Jeff L.

Yelp
A little hard to find, but worth it. We had the sampler appetizer that included Hummus and other goodies. The Schwarma is fantastic, as is the matza ball soup. If you are a meat lover try the kabob. The falafel is as good as If you were in Isreal. All six of us definitely recommend eating here. While they don't have explicit gluten free menu, there are many items to eat that are gluten free. They also know what items you can eat if gluten free
google avatar

Steve E.

Yelp
We all enjoyed it very much. Busy night but they made room for us. Loved sharing the appetizer plate. I had the Red Sea Spaghetti which was great. Portions were comfortable.

Sam G.

Yelp
This restaurant was so wonderful that we ate here two out of our four nights in Venice. The fried artichokes with techina is not to be missed! How often can one enjoy a dish served in the Roman times with a modern twist ? Make a reservation so that you can sit outdoors on the canal and enjoy the breezes. Service is friendly and the crowd is multinational.
google avatar

Yelp
When one thinks of Venice, Italy rarely does Kosher come to mind. But A La Scott, having journeyed off the beaten path into the Jewish ghetto of Venice, found Kosher and its was fine. Gam Gam is Venice's first Kosher restaurant, sitting just on the outskirts of the heart of the world's oldest Jewish ghetto. And it's not just a really nice dining experience but a business that supports the many programs the Chabad of Venice pursues as it continues to re- establish the once thriving Jewish ghetto. On a nice day sit canal side and enjoy the outdoors but be wary that the canal water occasionally drifts over on to the sidewalk where Gam Gam has their tables. The ghetto area is low lying, as in the day the Jews of Venice were placed in a less desirable part of the city. Today however, it is again starting to thrive with enriched Jewish life. This is a perfect lunch spot after a bit of touring, and just a brisk walk or a bunch of stops on the canal 'bus' to get to the ghetto area. They do serve dinner as well including Shabbat dinner. Start with the Israeli appetizers with falafel. Like any good Jewish restaurant the portions are generous and the offerings diverse. Go for the fried artichoke with techina as well. It's a house specialty albeit pretty heavy and definitely fried. Nonetheless it's a treat and worth a try. As for main dishes, the Shwarma is a comforting sizzling skillet of onions and spices with cubed cuts of chicken. A predictably flavorful but well done dish. Although a kosher hot spot, do not underestimate the pasta selection (it is Venice after all). The pappardelle with mushrooms is a nice dish of all dante pasta and rich but simple mushroom flavors. Good food in a slightly off beat location in an otherwise busy city makes Gam Gam a nice destination along the way in Venice. A La Scott likes this memorable spot and gives it three and one half stars for the diverse and tasty offerings it has.
