Gamine Review - Cow Hollow - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Gamine isn’t your usual Cow Hollow restaurant: there are no cocktails, shot specials, bouncers, or people on the verge of a sidewalk vomit session teetering outside on the curb. There are locals, families, dates, and people who have lived in San Francisco long enough to survive multiple earthquakes. Real ones. Gamine is a place you go for authentic, traditional French eats served by - hold the phone - nice, friendly French people. I know. We didn’t think it existed either, but apparently they send all the nice ones to San Francisco. People in the ’hood are very, very devoted to Gamine. We aren’t as gung-ho as some, but it’s great in a pinch when you don’t have a reservation or feel like waiting an hour and a half to yell across the table at your dinner companions at Tacolicious. There are a few dishes we are very pro (escargot, moules, steak, salmon) and but some are just OK - the sauteed sides, fish burger, duck salad, and sadly, the bread. But whatever you order, you’ll feel like you’re in a local Paris cafe - even if it isn’t a glamorous hotspot or the most incredible food you’ll ever consume. As noted, the service is awesome and easy going, and while the space is crowded and a bit loud, it mostly makes it seem more authentically French. There’s an affordable wine list (with healthy pours from that friendly staff) and you can BYO with a corkage fee too. Bonus points: you can pretty much always grab a table with a short wait. Even though the money-suck that was Des Amis is gone, Union Street still has a French restaurant. Only Gamine is actually worthwhile, priced for the people and ready for a party. Food Rundown Duck Salad This is disappointing. Not that we are anti-bacon, but if you call it duck salad, give us duck. Not mountains of bacon and a few tiny slivers of duck. Weak. Onion Soup Gratinee Also known as “French onion soup,” this mostly serves as a cheese delivery device and we are A-ok with that. Soup is decent, cheese is wonderful. Good way to warm up on a foggy night. Escargot Served in the traditional plate, these come six to an order in a buttery yet light, slightly spicy garlic sauce. Frites Get some for the table. These are thin, crispy, potato gifts from above. Brussels These are lightly sauteed and a little peppery, not particularly good or noteworthy. Moules Mariniere and Louisette are our usuals - the first is standard, white wine and garlic - we’ve had mixed experiences with the broth quality, and the second has mushrooms and cream if you want to go richer. They are generous with the basic bread baskets so get your dip on. Goat Cheese & Arugula Salad This is another cheese delivery device that we are happy to consume. A lovely nugget of cheese rests on a nest of well-dressed arugula. Consume this. Steak Juicy delight with killer caramelized onions. Oh and frites. That’s all you need. Burgers Served on an almost too hefty ciabatta bun with a hearty helping of frites. The chicken and beef hold their own, especially if you get highly involved in the cheese, avocado, egg toppings game. You only live once. Grilled Salmon When in Rome and/or Cow Hollow, do as the locals do. Grilled fish has to make an appearance, and Gamine delivers well on this one. Leek fondue is a nice touch and they don’t overcook the fish." - Taylor Abrams

The Best Restaurants In Cow Hollow

"If you don’t want to drop Atelier Crenn money, but still want to feel like you’re not in the neighborhood anymore, go to Gamine for dinner. This quiet French place on Union usually has a minimal wait, and they serve food like mussels, steak frites, and French onion soup that tests the limits of maybe having too much cheese. It’s a great spot for brunch or dinner, especially on a warm night when you can sit out front." - taylor abrams, will kamensky

Where To Go When You Don’t Want To Make A Big Deal About Your Birthday, But You Actually Kinda Do

"There are a ton of places in Cow Hollow where you can blow out the candles, but Gamine is a neighborhood spot that you can basically take over with your friends. This small French restaurant has a private room you can book, or just push a few tables together in the dining room and make yourself at home. The staff is super nice, you can always get in without fail, and the petite filet, steak tartare, and mussels are all very worthy of being your birthday dinner." - taylor abrams

We went here as a party of 15. They accommodated our reservation with only a couple days. The service was incredible, very attentive. The food was much better than expected. I had the mussels in white wine and my husband had the lamb stew. Both were delicious. The appetizers we got were all quite good but the escargot isn't worth it.

The food was delicious and really tasty. We got there very early and so the place was empty with not very appealing decor. Once the food arrived it turned out amazing and would definitely come again.

If you are looking for an authentic french place in the city, this is one of the best options. Delicious food, good wine and friendly service. I recommend the mussels and the combozola cheese.

I had the pork chop - delicious. Wife had the chicken on recommendation of the staff... Amazing. Friends had the steak and they loved it, for the table we had the tartare which was really great, calamari which was decent given you can find it anywhere, lamb sausage great if you like a little heat on your dish. Overall great experience and the staff was great. We were in a back room because we had 3 like kids... Still managed to really enjoy our meal.

Really fantastic find. Amazing ingredients and passionate cook (I think owner) and staff. Taste is by rich ingredients, not by a ton of additives. Atmosphere is casual but super cozy. And yet prices and portion sizes are great. One of my faves in SF!

Great food and great service! The French toast is the best in the city. I've had the escargot as well and I recommend 100%. The last time I visited was on a Thursday and this was the first time I ever had their scallop special. They are to die for. Perfectly seared and melts in your mouth. The flavor is brilliant. The service is always friendly. Will come here and invite you to come as well.

I loved this little Marina neighborhood bistro. It was too cold to try their outdoor seating but on a nice day, that'd be a great option. Their food is delicious! I tried the Ricotta Ravioli with pine nuts and basil. I don't think I've had a better ravioli. The portions are quite small though, so it's best to order an appetizer. I would definitely go back here.
