At Gammarelli, the historic tailor to the Pope since 1798, you can snag luxuriously made clerical garments and famously colorful socks.
"In Rome, my main stop was at Gammarelli. Years ago when I was a staffer at Vogue, I complimented André Leon Talley’s bright socks and he told me about this shop—it’s where the Pope and the most important Vatican officials get their clothes (also called vestments). Bolts of the most vividly colored fabrics, brocades, trims…everything is made to measure and super fancy. It’s not the most comfortable place to shop (as a non-clergy, American woman) but I went in and asked for the socks. I got every color they had in my size. I’m not Catholic but I also got a bottle of holy water in Vatican City too because I loved the packaging and you never know!" - Kate Young
