Kate Young’s Italian Holiday in Florence, Rome, and Tuscany | Vogue

"In Rome, my main stop was at Gammarelli. Years ago when I was a staffer at Vogue, I complimented André Leon Talley’s bright socks and he told me about this shop—it’s where the Pope and the most important Vatican officials get their clothes (also called vestments). Bolts of the most vividly colored fabrics, brocades, trims…everything is made to measure and super fancy. It’s not the most comfortable place to shop (as a non-clergy, American woman) but I went in and asked for the socks. I got every color they had in my size. I’m not Catholic but I also got a bottle of holy water in Vatican City too because I loved the packaging and you never know!" - Kate Young

Recently we had noticed that the stole worn by the pastor of our Church was getting a little threadbare. During previous trips to Rome we had "window shopped" at Gammarelli's and thought a replacement stole would make a wonderful Xmas present. We viewed the Gammarelli website and contacted them directly to order a new stole. The Gammarelli staff was pleasant to work with and exceptionally helpful. Several weeks after placing our order, we received a package via FedEx. Our Pastor opened the package and we were all dumbstruck by the fantastic workmanship and beauty of his new stole. Our thanks and admiration to everyone at Gammarelli.

I felt awkward entering, knowing that this is a small tailoring shop specializing in garments for clergy - and I am not clergy. But I had read that you could buy socks that are the same socks that Pope Francis buys and wears. I thought this would be a unique and useful gift for a friend. The man in the shop was very friendly. He told me they offered the socks in cotton, wool, or silk and colors come in red, purple, or black. I bought a red pair of wool socks and my friend loved them. It's also a beautiful shop, and its interesting to see all the clergy garments laid out that they are working on

Classic menswear enthusiasts must make a stop here to browse their socks. I got the calf length ones at 15euros. Staff were helpful and spoke English.

Amazing shop that is the place for members of the Catholic clergy to shop. They are the ones who dress the pope! Very historical and cool little place (check the walls for photos of their Holiest clients!). Meanwhile, their socks are a great and unique souvenir to get.

I’m truly satisfied with my purchase and also their prompt response. Will continue doing business with them. My pectoral cord got misplaced at a Congress, got to purchase another.

Yelp
Shhh... American tourists: actual "pope socks" for about $13 each. Beautiful colors, beautiful material... the ULTIMATE in souvenirs for the discerning men/teenage fashionistas/classy Catholics in your life. They are sold in specific sizes, so you might want to know what size you need in advance. They can translate American to European sizes. Out of respect, don't go in dressed in ripped jeans. They speak English. They take credit cards.

Yelp
The store is very serious. It was kinda awkward to get in there. But experience is fun. The seller was unflappable and cool. He explained what color they have, showed them, helped with size, packed a few pair in paper and gave the check. Super professional guy:) Thanks to him I have super unique and practical souvenir from Roma.
