How Restaurant Workers Are Finding New Jobs During the Pandemic | Eater

"A local taco bar where a cook saw hours cut dramatically—from roughly 45 to about eight per week—leaving him reluctant to move into retail because he values the high-pressure, customer-facing kitchen environment and fears he would struggle with shelf-stocking work." - Matthew Sedacca

Google
I stumbled upon the Garage Taco Bar while checking out downtown Binghamton and couldn’t have been happier! Monique & Briana served me up three amazing tacos, and they even had a good selection of non alcoholic beer. The place has a cool vibe that’s a converted auto garage with good views of downtown. It’s a clean fun place that’s definitely worth the stop!

Loung Thammavongsa

Google
The food was delicious, fresh, and well portioned. Margaritas were delicious. Our server Briana was great!! Very friendly and personable. Even though it was busy we still had great and attentive service. We will definitely be back!

Zack Ayres

Google
Great service, better vibes. Like going to your own home garage, but they serve tequila and top notch Mexican food. Their margarita list is second to none, Liam, Luciana and Alfredo sure know how to make a fella feel welcome.

Ellen Lachewitz

Google
Excellent fun vibe!!! Great service. New owners so the drink menu online is not available. Drinks - Palomas and Margaritas are fab. Tasty nachos - order & share.

Google
Had lunch today and everything was Fantastic! All 3 of our meals were delicious and we were given some great options to choose from by our server Valerie. She was Polite, Enthusiastic and Professional plus waited on us in a timely manner. They also have a nice outdoor area with seating she told us we could come another day to have lunch or dinner at when it wasn’t so hot out. We will definitely be back.

Michael Uhler

Google
Totally worth it! Cool bar with great drinks, and the food is delicious. They have a wide variety of margaritas—I really enjoyed the blood orange with a chili rim. The menu offers a lot, but the tacos, burritos, and quesadillas all look fantastic.

Noah Schuster

Google
Valerie was the best server ever! Kind, warm, and prompt! The food was great and the vibes were wonderful. Definitely stop at Garage Taco if you get the chance! $4 margaritas on Monday’s!!!!

Kaitlyn Weaver

Google
Valerie provided exceptional service during my visit. She was attentive, efficient, and had a warm, welcoming personality that made the experience truly enjoyable. I look forward to returning soon and will be recommending Valerie to friends and family!! Everyone needs to request Valerie to be their server!

Yelp
Amanda and Emma D. were so awesome! We arrived a bit later in the night but, despite closing in 30 minutes they were pleased to serve us. As we ordered drinks, they were friendly and welcoming. It was a great experience at Garage Taco Bar!

Yelp
Seeing the average rating I wasn't expecting to be blown away, but we were impressed! We came on a Monday afternoon for late lunch. It was really easy to find street parking since most places were closed, and the restaurant wasn't crowded. The inside is cool with interesting decor - true to its name, it has a garage theme with some fun decorations. The waitress was incredibly sweet, friendly, professional, and serviceable. She was extremely attentive and went out of her way to proactively offer everything we needed - even taking the time to explain the different (homemade) hot sauces to us. One of my dining companions got a strawberry margarita with a chili rim, which the server explained used their housemade tajin-like blend. Good flavor to the drink. They had a large menu of cocktails and mocktails, and half priced basic ("broke") margs on Mondays. Looking at the menu, it was really hard to decide because they had so many great options. We started with the fried avocado which were DELIGHTFUL. Our whole table loved them. Not greasy at all, well seasoned. The outsides were perfectly crispy and inside was like biting into guacamole. A really fun menu option. I went with the cauliflower tacos, and they were perfect. The cauliflower was cooked perfectly, crisp but light and not greasy. All of the flavors and textures were evenly balanced. I'm not the hugest fan of cilantro but I didn't even detect it. I thought that the prices were a little high initially but two tacos (+ a side of choice) was PLENTY. The flavor and quality was top notch, and we were all really full and satisfied. I tried a bite of someone else's fish tacos and they were BOMB. Might have to order those next time. This was really a five star experience all around, and we were all already talking about returning in the future even though it's a drive for all of us.

Yelp
Had dinner here with a few people - here's my take: - cool atmosphere, nice vibe inside - server was on point - friendly, timely, very good - strawberry margarita was very good, chips and guacamole were very good - ground beef tacos, beans and rice were good but VERY SALTY. Rice was decent, beans had flavor but tasted like they just dumped a bunch of salt and spice in them and mixed it up, and there was so much neon orange oil from the ground beef it gave cafeteria vibes and was just so salty. A missed opportunity for sure - like they scooped out the beef but didn't drain the oil and just plopped it on the tortillas. I would give this another try and order something else, and hope for way less salt.

Yelp
Another great experience, food was excellent and server was so friendly and chill. Forget his name but he did a great job. Love this place!

Yelp
Went here on a day after golfing 18 holes and the food is incredible. I ordered a smothered burrito with red and green sauce. The space is really great, the soccer games on the tvs, the slushy machine margaritas and beer available on tap were local and varied. The green sauce edged out the mole sauce just by a little bit.

Yelp
The shrimp tacos were small but flavorful. The tortilla was a bit chewy. The salsa had a nice mild heat. Staff were polite. Not bad, but not something I'd crave.
google avatar

Yelp
Bring your appetite!!! The House Marg and Mango Marg are on point. Not too sweet and not overpowered by tequila. The chips/guacamole were great, would have like chopped tomato in it, but that's ok. Chicken tacos with side salad and a shrimp quesadilla with fries, and all was excellent. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Came in on a Monday night and they were able to seat our larger group with no problems. Pitcher of classic margaritas were half off that night as well which was a great price! Our service was a little slow but luckily we weren't in a rush. The fried avocado tacos were fantastic! I've never had fried avocado like that at any other taco joint.
google avatar

Louis L.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere, food you can eat with your hands, and a friendly staff? Sign me up. They have wine in a can. This place ain't pretentious! The tacos are the highlight, and don't sleep on their side salad. It's also a good place to knock back a few on a date or after work (if you work downtown, that is, otherwise parking can be tricky). You get the fun and liveliness of downtown without all the "extra" of being closer to State St. Wait times for tables can be up to 40 minutes, but the bar is first come first serve, so if you see a spot, grab it. You'll be able to order from the full menu. Portion sizes are generous, so you won't be hungry when you walk out.

Yelp
Service is okay here. The place itself is industrial and very cool. The food, however, is definitely overpriced and lacking. Went recently and ordered shrimp tacos, and the shrimp was so charred and burnt it tasted like hard rubber. Nachos were okay. A friend had the shrimp tacos two days after I did: his was also burnt. So I don't know if it's their recipe, a bad cook, or what but as someone who's worked in restaurants for years...that's NOT how you cook shrimp.

Yelp
Stopped by for dinner on our mini family vacation and was feeling some Mexican food. The food was subpar but the service was good. Server was friendly and answered a lot of questions. Tacos from Barbacoa to fish didn't have much flavor. Tortilla seemed very large and not house-made. Loaded nachos was tasty but what you expect on a drunken night. The worst is the quesadilla. I would not recommend that item. It's hard to butcher a quesadilla but this one was loaded with too much sauce and drippy cheese that wasn't Monterey cheese. Seemed like sauce or queso.

Phoebe B.

Yelp
We had such a good time at garage. Their karaoke night is genuinely one of the best nights I've had in Binghamton. Sophia, our bartender, was so kind, made AMAZING drinks and gave us such good service. She always checked in and made sure we had what we need. Garage has the best vibes!!!
google avatar

Kira R.

Yelp
The food is absolutely fantastic. They drizzle queso on the fries and the quesadilla has so much flavor. Really great place to eat in downtown Binghamton.

Yelp
The place is nice looking and clean but for the price, the food is definitely lacking. Came here with a friend hungry and I feel like I left hungrier than I had came. The food is pricey with small portions, ordered the Barbacoa tacos with fries. The barbacoa was pretty tough to chew through. Food was served on one of those weird cheap plastic plates that you'd get from dollar tree that you see all the scratches on. I recommend using lined fry baskets or something else. Waitress was nice but slow wait times and it didn't seem all that busy. I've always wanted to go try out the garage but this experience was underwhelming.

Yelp
We were in Binghamton and Garage was close to our hotel and dog friendly and oh yeah we love tacos and margs! It had just rained but the staff was kind enough to give us some towels to dry off the outdoor seating. We were starving after a long day of traveling so we ordered chips and queso, a shrimp taco meal, Barbacoa taco meal and the absolutely necessary margarita. The food came out quick and it was good. The chips were fresh and the queso was creamy and had just enough zip. The taco meals were filling and had some yummy rice and beans to accompany the tacos. The shrimp was cooked well and was flavorful. The barbacoa was tender and flavorful, the twist is that it was cooked with Dr. Pepper. On top of the delicious food we had an amazing experience from the wonderful staff. They were beyond attentive, kind and checked on us several times. They made sure our dog had water, we had enough chips and beverages and that we were enjoying our meal. The host was actually a cook who was not able to cook right now due to a wrist injury but he was a phenomenal server/ host and even brought out some yummy home made hot sauce that is made here on site. The only bad part of this meal is that it's not close to home.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere, they have hardworking crew, and enjoyed my tacos with my son. Went late Friday night during karaoke and added to the vibe. Support local. Thanks for the yummy food.

Yelp
The short review is: the food is mostly very good but at least one of the staff members (co-owner??) should be fired. Over the summer my wife and I decided to stop in for a bite. I'd been there a couple of times with a friend of mine for lunch and had a good experience. That was NOT to be the case during my visit with my wife. We decided to pick a seat in the outdoor courtyard, sat ourselves down away from all the other tables. We'd been there 30 seconds when a group of idiots from another table decided to sit on the wall near OUR table and smoke a joint. Yeah, I know that's legal now, but perhaps certain cultures who don't seem to care about others could at least consider that people dining just a few feet away don't want to smell any kind of smoke? Yeah, not gonna happen. Especially when these outstanding citizens were soon joined by one of the place's staff members. We thought maybe he was going to go over to them and ask them to be considerate, but nope. They seemed to be his friends and he just stood there and chatted with them. We ended up deciding not to challenge this group of entitled pigs and went inside, where we got decent food and decent service. The fella who enabled his friends to smoke a joint right near where customers were sitting shouldn't be working anywhere. I'm not inclined to return.

Yelp
Excellent Food, slow service and great vibe. Granddaughter wanted to come here so we did. Service was good to take order, slow to get food but they were slammed. Unfortunately my son ordered something they brought the wrong plate and then 2nd one came out after we all were done eating. Still the wrong plate. My son ended up eating it but only half the other half was very spicy. Waitress apologized as she was new. But no compensation for wrong order. But you need yo get the churro dessert. That is what gave them a 3 star. Awesome and all 5 of us split it. Granddaughter was entertained in the outdoor seating area while we waited. It was a long dinner over 2 hours to eat.

Yelp
Wow! I have not been to Garage in a bit but Taco Wednesday became a thing. Shrimp tacos were spectacular!!! Just enough heat. Perfectly cooked shrimp. And the sides (half order of beans and half order of salad made it even better). Yum!!! Waiter was a rock star - great recommendations (try the grapefruit hibiscus tequila margarita with the fancy name) and paid attention (attentive but didn't cross the line that makes you wonder if he should split the check with you). Only negative was having to bounce from table to table to get away from the AC. I won't wait so long before I return!

Mich L.

Yelp
The food is delicious and pretty filling. It's not the cheapest but it's not the worst. They had many options for vegetarians/vegans/gluten free people. The ambiance is nice. The only thing to know is about adding guac - we added guac to a burrito and it came on the side so if you want it inside be sure to specify. The service was great as well.

Yelp
Exceptionally fun, tasty, quality food. One of my favorites in area!!! Fish tacos are screamingly good!

Jason F.

Yelp
Went many times before for late eats. Door says they close at 11, Yelp says 9, apparently tonight when we got there they said they stopped seating and serving at 8. Many tables inside and outside were still seated waiting for food. Call before you go.

tony m.

Yelp
Sat at the bar. Was served by Nicole. She was decently nice but a little inattentive but I understand what it's like to work a service bar and serve patrons at the same time. It also seemed as though she was training on bar so I get it. Amanda was also on bar and she was excellent, she's served me before and she's extremely friendly and attentive. I will say-- to be fair, Nicole was serving me but was working the other side of the bar, and I had requested to stay with Nicole as my server so I could ensure whoever served me didn't have to split the tip. The guac I ordered in my chip flight was so salty that it was inedible but I asked for the manager and she swiftly fixed it and provided me a new batch after agreeing that it was very salty. The manager was great, even took the salty guac off my check. Typically the pico doesn't have enough lime so I'll ask for a couple to squeeze into it, but they perfected it this time. Garage is a nice spot if you wanna sit around a fire and have a few drinks, but I've always struggled with getting my server's attention here, even before the new ownership so it's best to sit outside and order drinks from the bar rather than get sat by the host and eat.

Yelp
Delicious vegan options! Our server was super nice, too. Definitely recommended!!!!!!!
google avatar

Randi P.

Yelp
We stopped in for lunch on a Tuesday hoping for some Taco Tuesday specials. This week happened to be Restaurant Week, so the taco specials were replaced with a different menu. No problem, we will be back! The ambiance is modern and fun. Our server was attentive and made great recommendations. The food was plated well, fresh, and delicious! I loved the fish tacos and cannot wait to come back for them, as well as the Broke margaritas!

Douglas C.

Yelp
The food was just fine. We hadn't been to Garage in a couple of years due to my disability. There used to be 3 parking spaces on premesis, but redesigned now for outdoor dining. Service was prompt, and we'll certainly go back.
google avatar

Bill W.

Yelp
Overall this place is a solid "4". The servers have always been friendly, the food is always good and the place has a great vibe. The fried chicken however, is another story. The. Best. Fried. Chicken. I. Have. EVER. Had!!!!!!!! Completely worth my 45 minute each way drive. A half chicken coated so freakin crispy, the queso and Molé stand NO CHANCE on making it soggy. 10/5 must have!!!! Sadly they have been having supply issues and because it is sooooo good, they often do not have it available.
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
Only reason I'm going 2stars is the atmosphere and the service. We ordered appetizers. One was the nacho with salsa, queso, and guacamole. The queso was amazing! Guacamole unflavorful, the salsa to me tasted like ketchup with onions and peppers. Peppers. Other appetizer was fried avocado. It came out black, you bite into it. It was very hot which is a good thing. The seasoning tasted to all of us and I'm speaking six of us at like City Chicken seasoning. And that was it. The darkness we're assuming is from old oil. Cuz I can't imagine a restaurant sending out burnt food. Now to the entree our whole party of six said their food was either lukewarm or cold, they ate them. I did not eat my burrito cuz I do not like my protein room temperature or lukewarm. I don't know how anyone can eat a fish. Taco and the fish be cold. I would highly not recommend this place to anyone looking for Mexican food because it's simply a disgrace. Two people that want Mexican food. That's my opinion and apparently shared by the other five I was with. Because we all agreed we will never go back. Other people tried to come in and it was 8:15 and they were sent away saying they are closed on their door. It says 12:00 a.m. On their page it says 10:00 Thank you pm, So how do you really know when this place is open or closed? You have to drive by? Now. Let's get to the finer points. The bathroom were disgusting. You got to have your staff clean them bathrooms or at least check them cuz they were a joke. I know this is going to offend a lot of people but frankly I don't care. This food was not good. They did take my burrito off the bill. That's probably about the only good thing, even the margaritas mango to be specific didn't have a mango flavor. You can go there if you want. Want it's your choice. This is just my opinion.

Malcolm M.

Yelp
Wow, I keep trying to leave a review but I guess the joke is on me? I'm the one who keeps coming back for this mouth molesting of sub par food and even worse service. It's not fair to say the service is terrible, I mean if you leave a bunch of kids with literally no training and even less desire to be there in charge? The food....... Just leave an unmitigated 4" garden hose of "crema" on remote and peeps have a better chance of getting south of boarder. Binghamton has terrible food..... congratulations taco garage....... You suck!

Jason V.

Yelp
Ordered the queso and chip appetizer, buddy got the fried avocados and we each had a draft beer. Both appetizers were very, very good. For dinner I ordered three taco meal with rice & beans and the beef, pork belly and barbacoa tacos. The beef taco was pretty good. The Dr. Pepper infused barbacoa taco was exceptional. But the crown jewel of the meal was the pork belly taco! The flavor was out of this world when combined with the pickled onions. I could not get over just how scrumptious and delicious that taco was. My one and only regret was not getting 3 pork belly tacos. They were THAT good. Without a doubt one of the best "street" tacos I have ever had the pleasure of eating.

Leia M.

Yelp
Been here twice in the past 6 months and both experiences were great. Really kind, lively servers and bartenders. The food was delicious, I had the shrimp tacos and one of the burritos. The vibe here is cool and there was never a wait time both times I went which was great.

John B.

Yelp
Nachos, tacos and beer...food was great. Nice atmosphere too. Manager came over to see if everything was alright. Gave him a little feedback that was well received. Staff was hard working and on top of things... I'll be back!
google avatar

Yelp
THe new place to go if visiting. Great setting, ambiance. Very good service. Just an amazing menu.
google avatar

LaDreena W.

Yelp
I liked the way the place looked on the inside and the musical selection was great, but the food didn't impress me. I had the surf and turf tacos and they were ok; I would preferred sliced steak over shredded and they were skimpy on the shrimp. The beans and rice were both bland. I also felt like chips and salsa should be complimentary at Mexican restaurants. The tunes were top tier though!
google avatar

Andrea Leona C.

Yelp
Ahem, the food sent me to the restroom after eating. It was not giving. I would not recommend eating here AT ALL. First of all, they took mad long to get my drink. On my soulllllll. Food was mad goofy. Even taco bell better. Even chipotle better. Even la isla is better. I HAD DIARHHEAA

Robert D.

Yelp
We ordered take out for delivery and it was really good. Rice & beans were perfect and the burrito was oversized and delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
When you're in the mood for a fun, laid back night with friends and you also happen to be craving Mexican food, go to Garage. From the unique garage-type aesthetic to the yummy cocktails, every time I go to Garage, I have a fun time! We ordered the street corn app, the surf and turf tacos, and the shrimp quesadillas!! The tacos were pretty good not incredible, but the quesadillas were something special. Also, my friend is gluten free, and she can eat a full meal here safely and easily! The menu is very accommodating! In my opinion, if you're craving Mexican and you're in the Binghamton area, Garage is a much better option than Dos Rios (unless it's for a birthday)!!!
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Great late night spot. Not too rowdy. Excellent and fresh Mexican food. Pretty chill overall. I don't drink much but the Garage was delicious. I've also tried the Pink Cadillac, which I didn't like as much because the agave flavor was pretty strong. Been here several times and will come again.
google avatar

JoAnne P.

Yelp
Amazing spot for a quick taco. Very good. Pretty fast service although it was not busy at all mid afternoon. Try it,. You'll like it.
google avatar

Beth M.

Yelp
I was born in Mexico, I visit often. The fries here are great, so are the drinks. The tortillas are, unfortunately, not so good. I think it is perfectly fine to call the meats something more akin to bbq than carnitas or anything remotely close to a barbacoa. Often the taco fillings are overly sweet, inconsistent in texture, twice the fillings have been almost burnt. I have been to this spot about half a dozen times, always wanting to give benefit of the doubt. The hot sauce collection is interesting, but again, very sweet. It is totally fine for food to have an american spin, but it also has to be tasty at least 65% of the time, which is not the case here for the "Mexican" offerings. Again, stop in, get the apps, get the drinks. The people who work here are nice, the vibes are good! The tacos are not.
google avatar

Kevin W.

Yelp
Steak was ok. Little dry. Pork was ok. Little dry. Chicken was ok. Little dry. Shrimp was great. Not dry. Some places do their work in the meat and it speaks for itself. Some need to fix the meat with sauce. This is the latter. Nothing was bad. Process was a little whack. Ordered on their site. Said 30-45 min. Then we got an email 2 min later that it was ready. When we showed up, they said there'd be a 10 min wait.
google avatar

Joanne N.

Yelp
Came here with my 2 daughters and their 3 friends on a Saturday evening. This place is #hip. I ordered 3 veg tacos to-go because I'm on that Yolanda Hadid almond diet but I decided to treat myself. The atmosphere of this restaurant IS kid friendly. Some ladies on the table next to ours tried to buy my daughter a shot (of JARRITOS MANDARIN SODA). How adorable! They're a bit skimpy with the cilantro but other than that the food was valid. Our waitress was such a doll! Loved her. Think her name was Veronica or Victoria. Either way she #slayed.
google avatar

Adam M.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised by this place. Food was a little better than 3.5 stars would suggest. I live near the Colombia heights neighborhood of DC which is mostly Hispanic and has a lot of good taco places, but this place is in the same league. And a nice break from my usual meals at Corteses and at Little Venice when I visit Binghamton. As others have noted--the tacos are priced a little on the high side, but they are also way bigger than normal tacos and while I walked in hungry, I was plenty full after 2 tacos (no sides)--a cauliflower and a fried avocado. They might be a tad easier to eat if they had less filling actually. Overall really good flavors and a worthwhile visit.

MJ H.

Yelp
I recently gave the Garage another try and was very impressed. It was the complete opposite of my previous visit and review. This trip was complete with great food, great service and a welcoming environment. Will be back for sure.
google avatar

Leigh Ann C.

Yelp
We stopped by for lunch today and it was very busy. We waited about 20 minutes for a table which was no big deal! Food was delicious and fresh and my margarita was good. It was very loud in there and service was a little slow (but friendly!) but that's to be expected with a hopping restaurant. Highly recommend the Barbacoa tacos. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Lisa V.

Yelp
Came here on a Tuesday afternoon. Because of COVID there is a contactless ordering system that is easy to follow. We started with the chips and guacamole. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND! A lot of the chips were not crisp and the guacamole had no flavor!!! I tried 3 of the tacos and only one of them really stood out to me: the shrimp taco!! Only reason I gave this place a 3 star was because the shrimp taco was really good. I also had the pork and chicken tacos and they were nothing to rave about. Two of my friends tried the rice and beans and they were both very subpar. The rice seemed slightly overcooked/ dried out and the beans tasted as if they had been washed out from the can, dropped on the plate, and had cheese melted on top. WOULD NOT EAT THAT AGAIN!!! Seems like a nice spot for locals and students, but the food is not that great.
google avatar

Allen C.

Yelp
We were suggested this place by one of the locals. It has got this great ambience to sit and relax to great drinks and some specials. The vibe is really great. There is a good collection of drinks to choose from . Overall it was a nice experience. The service is really great .

Warren L.

Yelp
This may be one of the worst establishments I've ever walked into! after being seated at a table by very unfriendly person, we had a person walk up to us and tell us they were not our waitress, and that she was busy and didn't know when we would get service! Unbelievable after sitting for 15 minutes we decided to walk out! Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend this to my worst enemy!

Yelp
This is one of my favorite spots in Binghamton, I always try to bring people visiting me to Garage. The music is always great and the outdoor seating when the weather is nice is a fun spot for happy hour. The food here has never disappointed me. The chicken and the barbacoa tacos always are delicious. I recently tried the elote corn dog and it will become and regular part of my order.
