Where to Eat and Drink During Portland’s 2023 Waterfront Blues Festival | Eater Portland

"I remember Garbonzos as a ’90s hit for hummus and grilled eggplant sandwiches; the falafel bar inside the Mittleman Jewish Community Center will be at the festival serving salads, chicken, and catfish in addition to its classic offerings." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Where to Find Next-Level Hummus in Portland | Eater Portland

"This long-closed Portland falafel chain re-emerged as a food cart in Southwest Portland, and most of its plates and pita sandwiches include a dollop or smear of a thick, hearty hummus, dusted with paprika and drizzled with olive oil. It’s best served with its crunchy, herby falafel, either tucked into a warm falafel or snug in a takeout box. Garbonzos is open for takeout via online order." - Michelle DeVona

Ringside Steakhouse Among Portland Businesses Filing a Lawsuit Against Their Insurance Company | Eater Portland

"Returning as a food cart in the Mittleman Jewish Community Center parking lot, Garbonzos is making falafel from fresh chickpeas and serving grilled eggplant sandwiches, vegan kofta, and other pita-wrapped sandwiches; the Oregonian calls its falafel and grilled eggplant sandwiches “among the best in town.”" - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

This Kosher falafel and also beyond meat in pitta was very good. Also lentil or tomato soups. restaurant is pretty nice with very nice guy who is running it. It is located in the Jewish center so the atmosphere is not the usual restaurant one. More like a familes place. I liked it, I think it's the only certified Kosher restaurant in Portland, a place simply to eat.

INCREDIBLE authentic middle-eastern food! I ordered for the first time and everything I tried was amazing. When I took a bite of a falafel it reminded me of when I was living abroad and two Israeli exchange students made us falafels, same flavors. The potato salad and all the dips were delicious, the tabouli was super fresh, and my favorite - the fried eggplant salad was full of flavor. The only thing I didn't really like that much was the coleslaw. Definitely coming back! Also the portions are huge, so it's a great value.

I heard about this place and wanted to try it. The place is inside the community center and you have to show ID to get in. The food is so good. I really recommend the soup. The sandwich was also good. The restrooms are really clean and the atmosphere is nice and quiet.

Google
I have to agree with the other 1 Star review, their catering service is horrendous. The most bland food we have ever had, There is no way they deserve anything more than 2 stars for their food. KFC easily has better tasting fried chicken and slaw

Google
These guys catered waterfront blues fest and holy disappointment 😔 the fried chicken was some of the worst we've had. Absolutely zero flavor, like not even a pinch of salt just bland breading and same with the Cole slaw, like it was just wet cabbage.. how pathetic idk who the cook is, but y'all need a new one. We feel robbed like so bad we think we deserve our money back

Google
So delicious! Love the Falafel plate in particular, but everything we have tried is good. We are Omni, but don’t miss the dairy at all on these dishes. We walk there regularly and food is fast, tasty, and employees are friendly and practicing good hygiene (masks, gloves, etc)

We stopped to grab food on our way home from a beach vacation. Order ahead was easy and the food was hot and ready on time. We had a portobello pita and an Impossible Kofta pita as well as an order of fries. The pitas were delicious, and the fries were tasty and a portion generous enough to split. If we’re ever back in town we plan to stop again.

Without naming names, we all know there are other middle eastern food places in Portland. If you didn’t know, and you stumbled here, good. Stop the search, you found your place. Their pita bread is a heavenly pillow. The falafel has a perfectly crispy outside with a moist and flavorful inside. Get the falafel sandwich. Every bite was satisfying. It took me all of 3 minutes to eat it. I missed it so much when it was gone. Counting the days until my next visit. Please stay In SW neighborhood… forever .

Yelp
Oh my! I've been wanting to try this place since I use the JCC occasionally. It's amazing! I got the Falafel Pita Sandwich and it was so good and filling! Comes with a what I assume is homemade pita (I don't know for sure tho), hummus at the bottom, shredded cabbage, mixed tomato salad, falafel patties (I think there were three but might have been four) and tahini sauce. It was phenomenal! A bit messy to eat but holy crap so good! I'll be back next week for a kofta beyond burger plate.

Yelp
This brightly colored food cart in the parking lot of Mittleman Jewish Community Center is just what I was craving on a perfect summer day. Had to try the falafel from the man, Allen Levin, that introduced hummus and falafel back to Portland in the 90s. Legend! We ordered falafel sandwiches, vegan kafta platter, hand cut fries, and fried eggplant salad. The falafel was chockful of cucumbers, hummus, and crunchy falafel in every bite. Each bit brought new texture into the mix. The kiddo loved the kafta beyond burger, which came with mixed vegetable salad, cole slaw, potato salad, tabouli, hummus, tahini, baba ghanouj, and pita bread. Every bite I stole was delicious. The fried eggplant salad was also complex. So good with the pita. The fries were fresh & just the kind A was craving. Everything is vegan, halal, gluten free, and certified kosher, so it makes food allergies and preference simple. They were very efficient and nice as well. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Yum. This is a fantastic addition to the neighborhood. My family has falafel sandwiches and hand cut fries. The falafel was very flavorful and not too fried tasting, which is a problem at other places. I loved the hummus, veggies, and sauce. The hand cut fries were pretty good, but weren't really hot. It seemed like they had been sitting quite awhile. However, we came on big truck day at the MJCC, so they were very busy.

Yelp
I am giving up on Garbonzos. Most times when I call to order there is no answer. There has never been a message stating that they are closed. Tonight I called and they said that they closed at 4:30, but when I look online it says that they are open until 7. What a shame. This is no way to run a business.

Yelp
They very clearly advertise that the entire kitchen is gluten free (see picture attached), and make no additional notations on their menu to make one question that statement. There is even a prior reviewer that, after trying almost everything on the menu including the pita, states that everything is gluten free. As someone with celiac disease always on the lookout for somewhere safe to eat, it is inconceivable to me that a restaurant would advertise as a fully GF kitchen when ALL of their Pita sandwiches and even the burger plate are littered with gluten (these are not GF pitas, they are normal pitas...). That's 50% of the menu, not just a one-off item. I had a friend go to pick up on my behalf, and thankfully he asked the right questions or this review wouldn't be where my experience with this food cart would end. If you have a serious allergy, or want to support your friends that have severe allergies who face this level of deception daily when making food choices, consider an alternative option.

Yelp
Had the falafel plate and it actually includes everything listed. Amazing. Really good. Just what I needed after a 13 hour shift. Everything we ordered, we enjoyed.

Yelp
Great fries and the mushroom wrap was good. They need some garlic sauce or spicy mayo and it would be perfect. i would definitely go back again.

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood and also work within walking distance of Garbonzos food truck. It is so good, fresh and well priced. The fries are some of the best ever. Staff is really friendly and again, food is hot and fresh. I keep having the same thing, the falafel sandwich, and I am addicted. It's big for $8.00 and you can really have some left over. Some of my coworkers have tried also and go for the salad or dip plate. Just go there - support local and you won't regret it.

Yelp
Excellent food and wonderful service. Great option for vegetarians. Feels light while being very satisfying. Worth stopping by and trying something new.

Yelp
Garbanzos food cart served at Zidell Yards event space. It was the most popular food cart on the lot so had to wait 40 minutes for our order but it was worth the wait for the Kafta Beyond Burger Pita and gluten free Falafel plate. Yum!

Joan W.

Yelp
Ate there twice at Zidell Yards events. Nice people. Yummy falaffal sandwich, and vegan too! Thanks for being there for us!

Mikhaila B.

Yelp
Had their kafta beyond burger plate and eggplant salad During a show at Zidell Lot. LOVED the flavor pallet and was blown away by the amazing textures. Will be eating here again!
