Garden Bakery - Review - Mendocino - Mendocino - The Infatuation

"When you need pre-hike sustenance but don’t have time in your schedule for a full sit-down breakfast, head to Garden Bakery. The counter-service Mexican restaurant and pastry shop with a big garden out front has a case full of flaky fruit danishes, as well as a menu of tacos, quesadillas, and tamales you can easily take on the road. The breakfast burrito is decent and filling—it’s filled with just eggs, mozzarella, and bacon—and it travels well, if you need to get your steps in on a waterfall loop before eating on the trail." - Julia Chen

My husband and I came to this place for lunch and we were disappointed. I ordered a taco and it was ok. He ordered a Chile relleno Burrito. The burrito was rapped in plastic wrap, which already wasn’t good for us. The lady who attended asked if we wanted cold or hot, my husband said hot, so she put it in the microwave 😐 She gave us the burrito without any salsa until we asked, and from the top (see photo) you could tell it was not fresh, also very cold inside. He could not even finished.

Google
Best baked goods around - especially the filled pastries with blackberry or blueberry with cream cheese. Perfectly soft on the inside and crispy, flaky outside! The Mexican food not so much as our “taco” was over cooked, dried out chicken with onion on a disintegrating corn tortilla - no salsa offered. So will definitely rerun for the baked goods but not the tacos.

We go to the Garden Bakery pretty much every time we’re in town. We’ve tried almost everything they make. Love the pastries. The burritos and egg bites are also delicious. Can’t really go wrong with anything you choose. Service is good and everyone is friendly. Very comfy feeling inside and outside. We highly recommend you give it a try.

Best bakery. Delicious baked goods for a great price as well as great mexican food. Great location & environment

Google
Good pastry, mango danish, not too sweet. Service is indifferent.

Google
Blackberry Danish was excellent! Turkey empanada was good, but warmed up in microwave which made the pastry texture less appetizing. Breakfast burrito was also good.

This is our favorite bakery in Mendocino County - we always stop by when we are on the coast! The danishes and cookies are on point, but with their reasonable prices we often end up walking away with those plus whatever we haven’t tried before! As a bonus their breakfast burritos with mozzarella are consistently good - and the salsa is so fresh!

Yelp
Garden Bakery is a tucked away bakery in Mendocino. It's a smaller bakery with a few selections. We were greeted as we entered and the lady was patient with us while we took a look. We decided to order a breakfast burrito, mango danish and blueberry danish. I was a little shocked the breakfast burrito was prepared and then just microwaved. Probably the most low maintenance burrito I've had. It's more on the flat side too and not your proper burrito shape. The burrito itself tasted good though and there was even a cheese pull! The pastries were decent and had a good flakiness. I will say I think I was given a peach danish and not a mango one because it literally tasted and looked like peaches even though we saw the danish picked from the mango danish tray. We also sat outside which I already know is really cute during the warmer season, but during the colder season it's a bit cold and dark.

Yelp
Small place but so worth the visit! Amazing pastries! I had to go back twice during my weekend visit in Mendocino . Friendly service. A must try

Yelp
Garden Bakery is tucked away in the midst of a backyard garden and is one of few coffee shops open in Mendocino Village (and to its credit, the only one that's open "late" until 4:30 pm). There's minimal seating inside (just 2 stools next to the window), but ample seating in the garden area outside. I stopped by here mid-afternoon and by 3pm, the pastry counter was slim pickings. The bakery offers an interesting mix of traditional pastries and Mexican food (tacos, burritos, and quesadillas). Since I was in the mood for something savory, I got a turkey empanada, which was hearty but honestly not worth $11.50 (the price was suspiciously inconspicuous, so that was on me for blindly buying). FYI: $5 minimum for credit cards. I'd give this place 3.5 stars, but rounding up to 4 stars.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came to this bakery/coffee spot while on a weekend getaway. The drinks were decent for their price. I got a hot earl grey tea for $2 and my boyfriend got a 16oz latte. We weren't able to get a bakery items as nothing caught our eye. They did have tacos and burritos if you're hungry. This bakery is on the side, you kind of have to walk into a nice garden pathway. What caught our attention was the Raven that was outside of the bakery. This kind man gave him a piece of bread which he enjoyed. Overall it was an okay spot, nothing too crazy. The customer service was sweet.

Yelp
We drove up to Mendocino to visit for a few hours. We got hungry after wandering around for a while and were hoping to find something quick and not too expensive. It turned out that was not an easy objective! But then we stumbled on the Garden Bakery and decided to see if they had anything lunch-worthy. Fortunately, they did. We split a breakfast burrito and then bought a cinnamon roll and two danishes: mango cream cheese and strawberry cream cheese. It's a small interior, pretty much a to-go operation, but there are tables outside in the garden (hence the name). We found a nearby table with nice greenery all around, although the tables and chairs could use a more regular cleaning. Still it was a pretty spot for lunch. The breakfast burrito worked great for lunch - chock-full of scrambled eggs, mozzarella cheese and bacon. Yum! Then we moved onto the sweets - wow, everything was great. The cinnamon roll was to die for and both danishes were marvelous! All in all, two thumbs up for Garden Bakery.

Yelp
I guess the best part of our encounter with Garden Bakery, was after coming here and having a terrible time, we happened upon the Waiting Room which was incredible and without this bad breakfast, we may not have ever found the Waiting Room! We stopped in here for breakfast during our trip in Mendocino, and even though it was breakfast time, the place was dead. We parked on the street and made our way in. Inside, it was even more dead, and the cases were almost empty. I ordered a Cinnamon Roll ($3.50 I think), a Mango Cream Cheese Danish ($3.50), and was hoping for a tamal but they were out of those, breakfast burritos, and just about everything else. The person helping us behind the counter was really short with us, dismissive, unhelpful, and as soon as we paid, they threw our items at us and walked away. Once to the car, we bit into our baked goods. My Danish, although it looked pretty ok, was super dry like all the butter had baked out of the layers in the dough. There was filling, but it was so sparce and unremarkable, it definitely didn't taste like mango or cream cheese at all. Hubby's cinnamon roll was bland and also dry, and the frosting was grainy and heavy. Overall, a terrible experience with really lackluster baked goods, unfriendly staff, and not somewhere I would return if I were back in the area. Do what we did and give this place the *pass* and head straight to the Waiting Room- you'll be glad you did, trust me.

Yelp
Drove 30 minutes to try this place only to find they'd closed for the day - at 1:30. Didn't bother updating their 'website'. Probably only caters to the pretentious locals.

Yelp
Muffin was okay, espresso was awful (Threw it out). Maybe the drip coffee is better (?).

Yelp
Stop by for a quick lunch and found the tacos here are simple and delicious. It's so nice to enjoy a good lunch in the beautiful garden.

Yelp
Tucked away in the corner, this Cafe and bakery is easy to miss. But we enjoyed stopping by here for some good coffee and a Peach Danish.

Yelp
Delicious find! Little alley way leads to delights! Small selection but delicious! Pic of 1/2 of blueberry cream cheese danish. And reasonable pricing!

Yelp
We spent the weekend in Mendocino and were craving sweets before heading back to our inn. I found Garden Bakery on Yelp and the mango cream cheese danishes brought us in. But when we arrived around 4pm-ish, they were sold out of almost everything except a few strawberry cream cheese danishes and cinnamon rolls...so we ordered both, and agreed that these were some of theeee *best* pastries we've ever had! The danish pastry was flaky, generously-filled, and flavorful; the cinnamon roll was doughy, crispy around the edges, and delicious. They have an outdoor garden seating area, but the inside is pretty plain; you just walk up to the counter and order. We were surprised to see they had tamales, empanadas, quesadillas, etc so will stop by again next time we're in Mendocino.

Vincent M.

Yelp
Food was served fresh, had the breakfast burrito and it was hot and tasted great. Has nice outdoor seating and very peaceful indoor seating.

Yelp
Such a good find! Don't let the look deceived you, it's very simple but their pastries are delicious. Crispy and melting in your mouth at the same time. They are not overly sweet as well which is great, you could eat 10 of them and not feel overwhelmed by it! Honestly just stop there just for the danishes! You are welcome !

Yelp
We stopped by to check out the pastries they have to offer, but most of it was gone by the time we got here around lunch time. We settled for some lunch instead. The lady behind the counter wasn't too friendly, but answered my questions. We ordered the chili relleno burrito ($9.5), three tacos ($8.5) and chicken tamales ($3). They are cash only. The tacos are made right on the grill with onion and cilantro. The burrito is pre-made and she reheats it in the microwave. The tacos are the best! Every meat was grilled to perfection with wonderful flavors and I liked them all in their own way. The salsa that came with was fresh and delicious. The burrito fell short for me. The chili was not spicy and not much flavor. It was cheesy though. The tamale was small, but packed with flavor. I didn't get any chicken, but was a nice bite. Overall, it was a good taco fix. But I probably wouldn't return. I'm always disappointed when my food is reheated in the microwave.

Yelp
Wandering around downtown Mendocino, looking for a small bite to eat, we found Garden bakery. The owners were absolutely lovely, even bringing out a water dish for our two thirsty pups. I ordered three different pastry items to share and try with my husband: A mango danish, a pear danish with vanilla custard, and a classic chocolate chip cookie. The prices were reasonable and the portions were fair. The garden area itself could use a little love and attention as it was quite overgrown and underwhelming. Aesthetics aside, the pastry items were quite tasty. But I feel that the garden bakery might be better known for their tamales and other Mexican fare. Since we had lunch reservations, we didn't want to spoil our appetite.

Yelp
Cute little bakery with some coffee options. Dropped in for a latte ($4.50) and to hit the $5 credit card minimum, a mango danish. Both were delicious and the staff very friendly. No interior seating, but the headlands are just a block away to enjoy with your goods.

Marina K.

Yelp
A little disappointed with the bakery items' taste and selection. Very basic average-tasting items. Given the location and a beautiful garden patio, they could have made this cafe so much better, if they've just put more thought and effort in the selection and quality of their pastries.
google avatar

Aly E.

Yelp
Gluten free options, the peanut butter cookies are so good. Cannot wait to try the zucchini bread. A little difficult to find, and the person who helped us seemed slightly annoyed by our presence. The entrance is beautiful. It rained when we were there, but on a sunny day, the exterior dining area looked very inviting!

Yelp
This place is a good alternative to GoodLife Bakery if you don't feel like braving the long lines. We popped in around 9am on a Sunday morning and there was no wait. Good food and decent service in a no frills, reasonably Covid-safe setting. The outdoor garden eating area is pleasant. We had turkey empanadas (okay), blueberry muffin (excellent!), and Americanos (good). The service was polite, though not particularly warm and friendly. They had issues with their credit card machine, so paying by cash is probably faster. The setting is no frills - don't expect character or nice decor. We appreciated the fact that the staff were all wearing masks. However, they are not requiring customers to wear masks at this time (I wish they were). Overall, a decent spot for breakfast.

Corinne F.

Yelp
Great spot to get a sweet or savory to start your day. The chile relleno burrito is full of flavor, not spicy (I am a wimp) and fills you up. The danishes are moist and rich with a cream/fruit filling. Even the regular coffee is good! Come enjoy the garden from the outside tables or through the windows on a rainy day.

Yelp
Whatever this place once was, it isn't anymore. I suspect it's under new ownership. The display case was empty at 8am, only drip coffee and an old paper sign stating the espresso machine is broken. I imagine it's been broken a long time and will never work again. The "garden" area looks like it's been sadly neglected and the inside is shabby. Here's my theory: The new owners either rent or bought the place all furniture and decor included. They set up what is essentially an indoor taco stand to make a few bucks off the wealthy tourist clientele. With not many options in town, any breakfast food will do well. There are only a few things on the menu and it's all pre-made and reheated in the microwave. The breakfast burrito is OK, but bland. The fact they have generic baked goods is probably out of necessity as people continue to ask for it; and it's not made in-house and likely purchased outside Mendocino. Not one pan dulce to be found. You can tell the owners don't care about the place. It's rundown, kind of dirty, and is a shell of its former self. The bouquet of dead roses in a dusty vase on the counter is symbolic. What a missed opportunity. The worst part about this place is it could be so nice, a lovely addition to the town with Latino flair, a classy Hispanic vibe lacking in Mendocino. It's clearly just a way to make money off the tourists and it should be so much more. The lady behind the counter wouldn't give you the time of day if you didn't have cash in hand.

Yelp
The meat in both tacos I ordered was overcooked and tough. I tried a chicken and a pork taco. At $4 each, they were tiny but tasty

Yelp

Yelp
Great burritos and a cafe tucked into a garden in the Village of Mendocino. Reliable!!!!!

Yelp
great to have this place open during COVID, they only accept cash but provide fresh food and drinks with nice garden setup. We shared breakfast burrito - ask them to warm it up! Blackberry cream cheese Denish - great, generous amount of berry's What they lack in their menu they make up with great taste, cheap and fast service, dont miss out in one of your mornings in Mendocino
google avatar

Yelp
Such a great little find in the town of Mendocino ! It's a small bakery that has an eclectic mix of goods all of which are tasty. On the savory side they have things like quesadillas, tacos, tamales, as well as empanadas. We tried the savory empanadas which had ground turkey as well as potatoes, nuts, and some really tasty and savory spices like nutmeg. We also ordered the tacos of carne asada, which were pretty good - the salsa was amazing. For something sweet we went for the strawberry and cheese danish, so good as well! The staff is super nice and friendly and overall really great! Would certainly recommend this spot for a savory or a sweet snack !
google avatar

Jackie R.

Yelp
Nice garden seating, lots of fresh pastry's and nice people. 5 dollar minimum for credit cards. Got the breakfast burrito. Tasted a little bland. Could have used more bacon.
google avatar

Jeanne C.

Yelp
Lacks the ambiance and cachet of others but the Mexican food (limited selection) was very good!
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
Omg! Go. Small and hidden, so worth it!!!!!! Best cinnamon roll- flaky and sweet but not overdone. This isn't a sugar fix- it's a journey.
google avatar

Sidney A.

Yelp
Such great food! Loved the homemade salsa, tacos, quesadilla, and tamales. Will definitely come back next time we are in Mendocino.

Alicia D.

Yelp
They had nothing but a few croissants, a few danishes, and black coffee. They were very disorganized. The Danish they tried to give me looked like it had a big bite taken out of it. And we asked for napkins for the many things we bought and they tried to give us 2 teeny napkins for the 6 people who bought food. Seriously? A single napkin per person should be included in the $5 danish.
google avatar

Brian R.

Yelp
Empanada was decent. The cookies leave a lot to improve upon. Too much flour. Was like a chocolate chip sponge.
google avatar

Vickie B.

Yelp
You walk into this bakery and you can see the stuff being made. There are mixers, there are eggs. I was surprised because even though I go to a lot of bakeries, I have never seen people actually really cooking the stuff. We had Danish. I liked some more than others. It wasn't too sweet. The apple raisin was to die for but I was disappointed in the blackberry, not that it was bad. The apple, which usually my least favorite was terrific. Friendly service.
google avatar

S P.

Yelp
Very fast snd friendly service! Open for outdoor seating. Big serving made to order burritos!

Yelp
SO glad we found this, adorable, cozy, casual oasis a just few steps off the sidewalk. If little garden fairies ate pastries, I am SURE this is where they would come. Whenever we travel we are always looking for places to eat with our dogs, so this little garden spot with tables + blueberry danish + croissant was exactly what we were craving.
google avatar

Greatest E.

Yelp
Blueberry and cream cheese danish. A flaky exterior disguises the delicate balance between succulent berry and savory cheese. Lightly dusted with powdered sugar. An excellent partner to a cup of strong, black coffee.
google avatar

Loreal S.

Yelp
Cannot believe I haven't reviewed this place... It's amazing and a destination whenever we're in the area. We always get the empanadas.. They're amazing, but I think I'll have to try the cinnamon roll this trip..woo hoo
google avatar

Ashly M.

Yelp
Delicious breads, and the tamales are very good as well- sort of off the beaten path, but on Albion, and they have a cute little garden seating area as well.
google avatar

Erika W.

Yelp
Not what I was expecting. The food was all premade and microwave to heat up. The breakfast burrito was good but the tortilla was stale.
google avatar

Bunni R.

Yelp
Delicious baked good and excellent home cooked Mexican food! Owners are extremely nice and their whole family works the business

Yo M.

Yelp
We spent a bit of $$$ here for a place that DID NOT: Have a restroom Have water for my dog's bowl Have ice Have espresso drinks Take credit cards
google avatar

Karen S.

Yelp
Charming little bakery in downtown Mendocino. We had a quick breakfast here both mornings of our visit. There's convenient parking right out front on Albion and there was only one customer ahead of us on both mornings. Service was warm and very friendly, and the homemade tamales and pastries were delicious. I brought home a few extra fresh peach and vanilla custard danishes; they are SO GOOD, with fresh ripe peaches, and not overly sweet. There's plenty of seating in the adjacent garden. I do wish they had additional coffee options such as lattes-all they had was regular drip coffee. I highly recommend starting your day here!
google avatar

Vanessa T.

Yelp
Breakfast burrito to die for! I'm not a fan of burritos but this is the best I've ever had! Delicious!!!
google avatar

Johnny M.

Yelp
They have good Russian Tea Cakes and Rugelach here. The pastries go well with their coffee. Enjoy the scenery with outdoor seating.
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
The most unassuming place with the best food! We had the breakfast burritos with the delicious salsa. The coffee was excellent. Once we discovered how delicious the breakfast burrito was we had to try the pastry. The blueberry danish was full of fresh blueberries and cream cheese.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Fantastic pastries. Truly some of the best I've ever had. It's a wild claim, but it's accurate. It's the only place open at 8am right now due to Covid anyway, so we are lucky they're also great.
