Restaurant Closings in the San Francisco Bay Area | Eater SF

"Four Barrel apparently departed its Garden District location and is being replaced by Hey Neighbor; Four Barrel still operates Valencia and Divis locations and is taking over the former 20th Century Cafe space in Hayes Valley, though questions remain about the ownership transition promised years prior." - Becky Duffett

Google
First time guest and definitely going back. Ambience is serene, especially the patio (with ceiling fans...thank you). The espresso was robust and smooth. Y'all have a good thing going.

Debdeep B.

Google
Spacious cafe with nice ambient music. The coffee is good too. They have a small outdoor seating area that is shaded and is great when it is not raining hard. The parking might be a bit hard to find.

Marufa M.

Google
It’s a very nice place especially the outdoor area. Had their cafe au lait on the second visit. It was good.

Time2Geaux

Google
Neighborhood coffee shop where you can see people visiting over good coffee, reading the paper or a book. Dog friendly outside that is like an oasis! Friendly service and nice pastries.

Elina G.

Google
Excellent strength and flavor latte. I came specifically to this coffee shop for their cozy outdoor patio as it was a perfect day for being outside. Wish they’d offer more savory bites - wraps, bowls, sandwiches. All the food offerings I saw were mostly sweet - biscottis, cookies, cakes, and muffins.

Jackie W.

Google
This little shop has a great atmosphere inside and out. The outdoor area is well lit and the wall of greenery gives you some privacy even though it’s right next to the street. It’s a great little shop and I’ll be coming here more. Oh and the coffee is good to!

Google
Most goated place ever. I study hard here so that if this place ever closes I have enough money to buy it and reopen it.

Charlton W.

Google
Cozy little place off Perkins. The coffee is good, the staff is very nice, the place is great for a relaxing cup of coffee. They even offer wifi to customers.

Yelp
Hidden away neighborhood place, but worth our drive to visit from South Baton Rouge. Loved their granita.

Yelp
quiet laid back atmosphere with tasty coffee and such a tempting variety of pastries and desserts that always exceed expectations (the chocolate chip banana bread is my favorite) (they also have the best blueberry muffins i've ever tasted in my life) the cashiers are always super friendly and sweet always a nice experience there!

Yelp
Ive been going here off and on for 20 years. iYKYK. It's still operating after all this time in addition to its past iterations cause it's good and it's co distant it's dog friendly and the staff is nice. Nothin fancy just good.

Yelp
OMG!!! One of the best pastries I've EVER had!!! I have a problem digesting shortbread since my endometriosis diagnosis. I was told this was a shortbread Jewish pastry but I couldn't resist. I had a few bites waiting for stomach cramps to start. I waited and waited and waited and nothing happened. All I'm saying is wrap me 2 dozen because this latina is taking them back to Houston. Absolutely to die for!!! There is something in or lacking in this recipe that is "endo friendly"!! Finally I can eat a shortbread pastry again. Happy Dance!!!

Jennifer D.

Yelp
Go local! This quaint hidden gem is just a few miles down from the chain coffee shops that taste like burnt beans. Drive to the eclectic area of Perkins Road and buy local. Tables to enjoy pastries and coffee are inside as well as a private area to enjoy outside. The place is quiet and peaceful. Plenty of place to park and not a highly congested traffic area

William B.

Yelp
I had a nice tea/frozen lemonade drink with a delicious slice of their almond pound cake...the almond pound cake was delicious, and wish I could have had another slice (but it was the last one!!)

Penny D.

Yelp
I just didn't get a good feel walking in. The pastries didn't really look that appetizing. I got some cinnamon coffee cake. It was quite heavy. I got a tea latte. It was ok.
google avatar

Cindy M.

Yelp
Great coffee and some of the best pastries in Baton Rouge. The blueberry lemon pound cake is life changing.

Yelp
Garden District Coffee is a wonderful little local coffee house on Perkins Rd. They have a really great patio area out front with lush greenery that makes it seem very tropical. The interior is very roomy with plenty of seating space for you to hang out in while consuming their great coffee and teas. They always have an array of tempting baked goods on the counter to add onto your drink purchase if you wish to do so. They roast coffee in house, and often have some great offerings on their daily brews. Parking is really the only problem you might encounter, as there is little of it! The neighboring businesses get miffed if you take up all their spaces. However, one can park at the lot by the dentists office and Coyote Moon located just north of Garden District Coffee and walk the short distance to get your caffeine!

Pacience S.

Yelp
I often continue to go to Garden District Coffee out of nostalgia as I've always loved their granites, variety of iced coffee and pastries which have not changed over the years. It continues to be a good place to hang out and have a coffee either inside at one of several tables or their outside space. The quality of the products is alway consistent and always good. The 3 stars really comes more from the customer service experience or lack there of. When I'm going for a coffee I don't always want or need an effusive welcome but I'd like to leave the experience not being made to feel as if I'd interupped someone's day which is how I've felt the last few visits.

Yelp
I like Garden District Coffee. They have good coffees and good pastries and are in a great location. Nice outdoor area as well with plenty of plants and shade. My only complaint would be the interior. It as a little bland and could use some spunk. If the interior had a cooler vibe, it would be even better.

Yelp
Well, the sweetest smells of spring are up and coming!! This is a lovely cafe to sit down, chillax and just enjoy that! During the first portion of my morning, I sat outside for a meeting I had. They have a beautifully spacious patio/courtyard area that has plenty of shade, too! I guess you can call me a cafe junkie because I spend a majority of my days at a coffee shop using as my satellite office. Large cafe... parking can be a challenge during a busy day. I came here in mid-morning and stayed until about 1:30pm and was happy to see the cafe was still very busy throughout the duration of my stay. It was such a lovely day to enjoy a cafe latte with soy milk, so I did just that. They had a lovely array of cafe pastries. I can honestly say that I am not really a morning pastry kind of girl, but for those that love them, you will have several to choose from. The customer service was very friendly and they were also very patient with me, as I was deciding what to order. My only complaint was the parking situation. A great place for a meet up!

Yelp
Great location with decent coffee but this place has several issues.: 1. Terrible internet. Less than 1mb speed. It's been like that for years. For some reason, they don't seem to care. 2. The mood in the place is like a funeral home. I only go there when someone suggests it as an option. The service is at worst, sullen. At best, disinterested.
google avatar

Shronda S.

Yelp
I've been meaning to visit this place but I always passed it up. I decided to go one weekend. I love it! A great quiet place, hidden so that if you need to do some studying or writing, you got it. The coffee is on point. I got a simple vanilla latte while there and got a chai latte to go and both were so good! I could see myself visiting again and just relaxing with a book or writing some stories there.
google avatar

Kirsten J.

Yelp
It's a hidden gem! The coffe was great and the pastries and deserts were equally as good. It's far enough away from campus that it isn't super crowded which is very nice. They don't have much seating nor my ch parking but that's the only downfall I'd say.
google avatar

Krishnachand V.

Yelp
It's a serene place to hang out in the evenings. Ideal for a romantic chat, gossip with friend, read and/or browse. There is plenty of room to sit around - inside with light music or outside in the greenery. Coffee is authentic and good but the only downside is even for dine in, it's served in a disposable cup as against a ceramic ones. We had a cappuccino and a mocha with the turtle cake. Cappuccino is good while Mocha is Ok. The cale is delicious, rich in chocolate, creamy and nutty. I would recommend this place to hang out often.
google avatar

Kathleen T.

Yelp
This a great coffee shop to catch up with a friend. The outside setting is gorgeous while the interior is good to study in. The coffee is good, I usually get a frozen granita. The only downside is that the wifi is usually slow and takes a bit to load. Overall, I enjoy the atmosphere and will be going again!
google avatar

Anna C.

Yelp
I really like their vanilla iced lattes. They always have a bunch of tasty looking pastries and muffins and cakes and macarons. The only thing they don't have that I would really like them to have is some gluten free options since I can't eat foods with gluten but that's to be expected from most places in BR.
google avatar

Kathryn L.

Yelp
This is a wonderful local coffee shop near the Garden District. This shop has different coffees, teas, scones, cakes and cookies. I am guilty of buying the blueberry scone every time I go in for a mocha. It is delicious!!! Chances are if you're from Baton Rouge you'll probably see someone you know! They have indoor and outdoor seating. It is very relaxed and laid-back. They even have T-shirts that you can purchase to show the world how much you love Garden District coffees! So next time you're looking for a excellent local coffee shop with a great environment, swing on by for a Hot or cold beverage and a yummy sweet pastry! Enjoy!!!
google avatar

Jonathon R.

Yelp
Overall, I enjoyed my time here, though I was disappointed by the service and the scones. My friend and I went in to kill some time, and he decided to get some work done. I picked it because I used to drive by it all the time on my way to work, and the building is tucked away behind a beautiful patio surrounded by pretty plants. When you walk in, the first thing you notice is the front counter is loaded with treats. There are cookies and cakes and other pastries. The prices are reasonable, two pastries and two medium drinks came out to about $13. I had the White Chocolate Raspberry scone. While I enjoyed the flavor, it was almost like eating a brick of scone -- way too dense. It was also really weird that I could not find a menu that listed what baked goods they had and how much they cost. Also, only some of the pastries are labeled. So...you can have surprise cake! The barista was also a bit snobby. She did not know that I had spent 6 years working as a barista, so I knew what drinks were. As I had never been to this coffee shop before, I had some questions, but she was condescending when I tried to ask about various drink options and their drink recipes. This is the main reason I am only giving them 3 stars.
google avatar

Jackie D.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere of this place - very relaxed and quiet. Outside is pet friendly and they'll actually give you a water bowl for your pup upon request. I'm not a coffee drinker, so I'm glad they have options such as the Cranberry Lemon Tea - super delicious and very refreshing. My only knocks on this place are the parking and the staff. Parking is very limited, but I imagine its because most people that come here live in the neighborhood and either walk or ride their bike here, something I could deal with and still probably give them four stars if the staff wasn't so snippy. The first time I was there it was because I asked for a drink suggestion other than coffee and the second time it was because of a credit card issue. I'll give them another chance because I really like their tea and the location, but the staff needs some help.

Youngone K.

Yelp
Garden district has such a nice set up for a few covered and uncovered outdoor tables. As a heads up, don't bring external food or drink out there as I observed staff come outside and kindly but assertively enforce that with other patrons. From my experience here, the food showcased on the counter is much better than the actual beverages. This time I asked for an iced chai as it was too late in the afternoon to get coffee and it was hot outside. It was disappointing to see them take out tazo chai tea concentrate and splash it into a 12oz cup, add milk and ice cubes, and be charged more than what the entire carton of concentrate probably sells for. Their other cold tea beverages didn't appeal to me as they seemed to be of the fruit tea variety, so one is definitely just paying for the coffee shop feel over the actual options. I'd give it a 3.5 as the outdoor area feels nice despite the table being rather wobbly, the workers being pleasant, but the food and drink options being worth coming out for. Outside, i saw about 3 tables under covered seating and four uncovered. Outdoor seating was all really popular and never vacant for too long.

Yelp
I liked this place. The porch looked inviting but it was full when we went. It was also super hot so maybe when it cools down. My Americano was perfect and so was the service. The prices are fair. They have a lot of alternatives for milk such as soy and almond milk. The scones are the real deal. They also roast the beans on-site which I am a huge fan of. I will certainly come back.
google avatar

Emma S.

Yelp
Used to come here to study and indulge in some coffee, but not sure I will be coming here much anymore. The wifi speed is unbearably slow which is understandable when there is a lot of people occupying it, but it just made it extremely hard to get anything done. Sitting areas need some updates as well. Good place to get a quick coffee, but will not come here to study anymore.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Garden District Coffee is something of a local establishment, as evidenced by the group of regulars that one can find there early in the morning, chattering about whatever is going on and solving the problems of the world. It's also a hangout for local students. The snacks are tasty and the baristas know their way around the magic coffee machines, and I can't think of a better place to go on a quiet Sunday afternoon.
google avatar

Damon V.

Yelp
This has to be the best coffee place in the entire area. It is such a nice shop to meet friends and enjoy the friendly faces that welcome you. It is my go-to place, 7 days a week. And their coffee is absolutely the very best. Why would I want to go anywhere else for my morning brew?
google avatar

George B.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop. Location is great. Seating and furniture could use some comfy updating. The coffee is amazing, the iced tea always seems a bit weak but still delicious. The food is good for a quick bite. Free WiFi, great place to work or study. Seems like a real community hangout for a lot of folks, there's definitely a lot of regulars here.
google avatar

Meredith B.

Yelp
We thoroughly enjoyed our coffee - hazelnut latte and pecan iced coffee. When we went to pay for our drinks we paid in cash and patiently waited for our change. Yet, the individual working the register simply dropped our change in the tip basket. Once she realized we would like our change back and simply said "oh I'm sorry." We did not get our change back. It's unfortunate that a one time incident makes you not want to come back another time.
google avatar

Eric O.

Yelp
It's alright. I like the little outdoor seating area. The baristas are friendly and the coffee is good, as well. Unfortunately, the inside is pretty sterile feeling and the seating isn't great. If you're in the area it's worth stopping by, but I wouldn't go out of your way to come here.
google avatar

Allison R.

Yelp
This is a charming and sleepy coffee shop along Perkins Road. Truly the best in BR as it has defined my experience growing up in town - it is such a special place. If I ever found myself in Baton Rouge in my 60's, I'd still come right here, probably ordering the same thing - a large Plain Jane and a Strawberry Hamentashen. GDC is kindness, coziness, wondrous coffee/pastries, and sublime outdoor seating.
google avatar

Steven F.

Yelp
I used to really like this place. Although I've been living out of town and not visiting often, I've been stopping in for over ten years, since it was called "Perks" under a previous owner. Sadly, a recent experience at Garden District Coffee was highly negative and insulting. I understand that a coffee shop needs to take measures to assure that folks taking up space are helping pay the bills, and if I am going to sit down and use the WiFi, I'm going to buy something. Always. But I *REQUIRE* internet access for my work, and occasionally, I've visited a coffee shop, purchased a drink/snack, and then been unable to connect for one reason or another. There I am - having done my part - unable to do what I came l do. Very frustrating, and not always the fault of the business. Therefore, I usually - but not always- connect to the WiFi before making my purchase. In cases where the WiFi passphrase is withheld until purchase, I just explain that I'll make my purchase after connecting. This has never before been a problem for me, at least not until this recent experience. In this case, when I asked the Barrista - a gal I've seen there on numerous occasions - for the password, I was told bluntly - and in no friendly manner - "I can't give out the WiFi, until you buy something". When I explained my reason for wanting to connect before purchasing, I got some kind of sarcastic reply, and though I don't recall exactly what was said, I *do* recall the unpleasant feeling of being insulted and the feeling of my integrity being called into question. I'm a middle aged professional, and it's not like the place is large enough that I could promise to buy and then disappear into the crowd, having conned the business out of its precious WiFi. Not sure I'll be going back to Garden District Coffee to be insulted again. Maybe one day...
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Sitting in the GDC shop as I write this. Coffee is okay , along with the praline but the croissant we ordered was terribly hard. I asked for it be warmed up and was then pointed to a microwave. Not sure why it was even served in the first place, and the microwave situation didn't improve the flavor or texture.
google avatar

Angellé S.

Yelp
This is a laid back little coffee shop located in the Garden District/Southdowns area. I like the patio area outside, especially on a pretty day. Its a good spot to meet up with a friend, grab a coffee and sit out at the patio. It's a nice coffee shop that the locals frequent a lot. You usually see a lot of the regulars here sipping on coffee and working on their laptops. The have different coffee blends and pastry items as well. Iced drinks and such come unsweetened so you just fix it up yourself. I've had to request more soy or sweetener when I come here because I find the coffee to be really strong. I like to switch up my local coffee shops, because it keeps things interesting. Next time, I'll try some of their foodie items and a different type of coffee blend.
google avatar

Brittany H.

Yelp
Endless studying isn't as bad when I'm at this place! The workers there are fun, interactive and nice! Their ice coffee is a must try! The parking can be a bit difficult but it never stops me from going to my favorite coffee shop in the city!

Lucy W.

Yelp
Garden District has been my favorite coffee spot in Baton Rouge for years now. Even when I lived 30 minutes away I would go get an iced vanilla latte every morning. I didn't know what a granita was until ordering it one day...it's amazing. Their coffee is unique and I genuinely haven't gotten anything close to it any where else in Baton Rouge. The ham and cheese croissant and the blueberry muffin are SO GOOD. Garden District gets 5 STARS!! So obsessed.
google avatar

Samantha M.

Yelp
They have the a fantastic patio that's perfect any time of day - lots of seating and a lovely water feature that is soothing. It's my favorite spot to bring a book and catch some sun. The price is right and the people are friendly.
google avatar

Newly P.

Yelp
Nice neighborhood coffee shop with free wifi and plenty of seating spaces both indoors and outdoors. I usually get the medium sized coffee or the latte and I've never been disappointed. They have a bunch of baked goodies too but I've never tried those. Good location, and they have additional parking near Coyote Moon. I wish they'd start a small breakfast menu sometime...it looks like the kind of place that should serve breakfast too :)
google avatar

Vanessa P.

Yelp
This is my neighborhood coffee spot, but I would still come here if it weren't so convenient. I occasionally come in for a drink - I love sitting on the patio with a chai latte on cool nights. But more often, I buy beans here. The coffee is solid, and the ambience reminds me of a 90s sitcom coffee shop. It's not fancy or artisanal - just good coffee. The only thing I don't love is the food. There are a lot of sweets (and Naked Juice), so if that's your thing, you'll love it. But if you're looking for something more hearty or healthy, you'll be out of luck. But overall a great place to grab a cup of coffee with friends or by yourself.
google avatar

Felicia G.

Yelp
I started going to this coffee shop when it was called "Perks" and was owned/managed by a different group of people. It was really nice then, and it has gotten better over time. The art on the walls changes every couple of months. They used to have an improv show called "The Family Dinner" that performed every Friday night, but I don't think that's a thing anymore. My favorite aspect is the covered outdoor seating area. It's very plush and green and quiet despite being right on top of Perkins Road. I love sitting there with a latte and reading or doing work on the computer (their WiFi is strong and extends pretty far). Plus, they offer plenty of alternatives to regular milk, e.g. sweetened and unsweetened almond and soy milks. The baristas there are very sweet and well-trained. There's a short, skinny woman with long dark hair that makes the best cappuccino I've ever had. They change their internet password every few months, and will only provide it to regular paying customers. So no freebies! There's also a minimum amount for using charge cards, but it's not hard to meet; a large latte or iced coffee will do ya. Also, it can get very, very crowded and sometimes there are not enough outlets to go around, but that's more related to the overall size of the place and not bad planning.
google avatar

Amy G.

Yelp
I use to be a regular customer at GDC. I had several tutoring students that I met there on a regular basis, and most times, me, the student and their parent would purchase something. However today only my student bought a cookie, and as we were walking out the door, the barista shouts across the cafe in front of everyone that next time, if we did not ALL THREE buy something, she would kick us out. Shocked and surprised, I responded that we would not be returning ever and she said that sounded good to her. I am highly offended and I will be sharing my story with everyone. Honestly, from the looks of these reviews, I am not the only customer that they have ever been rude to. I can understand that you don't want continuous freeloaders, but this is the first time I had not bought something in the fifty times I have been there. I guess the rest of my business was worth the price of a cup of coffee. Next time I'll go to highland, they have better coffee and pastries anyway...

Robbie L.

Yelp
So I figured since I come here so much I would write a review. Pros: - The coffee is cheap yet quality. - The atmosphere is very laid back and calm. - Patrons are usually respectful and quite, so it's a good place to study (unlike Highland Coffee). - Owners/Workers are always nice and are good baristas (they always give me the right amount of almond milk) - The baked items are delicious and are, apparently, made fresh in house. Try the cake! Cons - Limited parking - $3 card minimum Overall I enjoy Garden District a little bit more then it's competitors in the area (highland, magpie, Starbucks, lighthouse) as it is a simple, quiet, quality coffee shop.
google avatar

Paul R.

Yelp
To an out of towner, at first glance there seems to be little to this shop... well in the somewhat stark interior there are echoes of decades of pleased customers. GDC is not the first incarnation of this space, but few will remember anything here before (spoiler: yoga studio). The space has changed names and owners a few times and the current management is the best it has seen.... old story .. employee buys out and runs the place better than predecessors. Granita Latte is a hidden gem on the menu.. think frozen mocha latte. yummmm. Oh and those folks in the front patio who look very comfortable may have been there 6 days a week for 2 decades.

La 4.

Yelp
I moved back to BR after being away for 15 years. I want to like this place for the nostalgia, if nothing else (I went here often when I lived in BR before). I've tried to go there twice in the past week. They were closed early both times. No explanation, just a sign in the door. I want to support a local business over a chain. But the hit-or-miss hours makes it impossible. I can understand if the water or power goes out - or something else they have no control over. But their hours are just random.
google avatar

Paige E.

Yelp
So the coffee is good. If you expect the staff to treat you like a human being or anything more than a transaction, you may be asking too much.

Dylan F.

Yelp
Hands down best coffee shop in BR. The less-than-glowing reviews read like they are from Starbucks regulars. Coffee is top notch and roasted in-house. The outdoor seating is in a completely different class from the offerings of the other local shops. Indoor seating is almost always quiet and peaceful. This place and the people who work here are charming and delightful.
google avatar

Bryan G.

Yelp
One time I defended my thesis and then when out and got really drunk with some friends. When I woke up on the floor of my office the next morning, I was still pretty toasted. I made a pass at finishing some work, but instead drunkenly listened to hip hop and harassed some officemates as they trickled in to work. Around 10 AM I left for a brighter future in New Orleans, still wasted. Don't worry, I wasn't driving. On the way home my comrade and I stopped at this place to procure some much needed caffeine. From that point forward my memory becomes a bit hazy as I was in the process of slowly declining from morning drunk to afternoon hungover. One detail remains clear however, I was fortunate enough not to vomit on myself or anyone near me and for that, Garden District Coffee probably deserves some credit. If only this cafe´ was located outside the uninspired grasp of Baton Rouge, I would surely procure their hangover retarding services more frequently.

Bethany F.

Yelp
Had the chance to check this place out last Thursday morning. I am not a fan of coffee and was meeting for a business meeting, but I had a medium, hazelnut latte with almond milk, and it was tasty. The young lady working that morning was very pleasant and had a smile on her face at 8am. That says a lot, lol. Nothing spectacular, but not a bad experience either. Will visit again.
google avatar

Miriam R.

Yelp
My friends and I have been going here since high school. I have taken first dates here, and it's where I do all of my studying. As far as snappy employees go, I have never had an issue. I'm on a first name basis with most of them and whenever there's a new one, I make a point to tip well so they know my face. I've never had any sort of a problem. As far as being "rude" about wanting you to buy a drink, it seems rude to me that someone would come use their free wifi and a table and not support this wonderful, locally owned place. It's peaceful, quiet, and the coffee is better than anywhere else. It's not hard to grab a muffin or a bottle of water, and you're putting your money into a business that has brought life and vibrancy to the Garden District area.

Yelp
Excellent place for relaxing with a cup of coffee. They have a good selection of desserts, breads, and bagels to accompany your coffee. Eclectic atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating.
