11 Best Hotels in Newport, Rhode Island, for a New England Escape | Condé Nast Traveler

"Opened in late 2023, this stylish, social, lineage-rooted newcomer proves Newport’s new wave can vibe with the old. Co-owned by Howard Cushing, whose family’s ancestral home inspired the design, it’s a three-story clapboard building set back from Thames Street on the waterfront, with a soaring foyer, whimsical chinoiserie murals, and a glamorous rattan chair by the entrance that’s already Instagram-famous. Dinner upstairs at Flora is one of the hottest tables in town; if you can’t snag a reservation, a spicy marg in the Studio Bar pairs with a great menu of small bites in what is currently one of Newport’s best social spaces." - Todd Plummer

Inside the Just-Opened Gardiner House, a Newport Hotel With a Rich History | Vogue

"Opened late last year, this 21-room property on Lees Wharf, directly next to the International Yacht Restoration School, channels its proprietors’ deep Newport roots—especially Howard Cushing’s—through interiors inspired by his 1860s family home, The Ledges. A digitally reproduced wallpaper of Howard Gardiner Cushing’s entry mural—powdery rose quartz-pink and turquoise, with butterflies mid-flight, peacocks on branches, and viney weeping willows—greets you as you climb a winding staircase. Unfinished traces of flora and fauna and visible cracks intentionally preserve the patina of the 100-plus-year-old artwork, since Cushing died before completing the original, making Gardiner House a thoughtful nod to the town’s rich design legacy." - Lilah Ramzi

Gardiner House (Newport, Rhode Island) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Newport is well known for its Gilded Age mansions but that doesn’t mean this coastal capital is resting on any stuffy laurels. Gardiner House is a perfect example of the new Newport. Built in 2023, this 21-room boutique property has a prime location on Lee’s Wharf (hello, harbor views) and is just off Thames Street (think shopping and dining). It’s all very nautical chic with a well-collected look throughout the guestrooms, restaurant, and bars." - Tablet Hotels

I had such a great experience at Gardiner House from the moment we arrived. Stephan, the valet, was super welcoming and made everything feel easy right from the start. The place itself has this perfect mix of elegance and comfort that set the mood for the evening. At the bar, Tyson took amazing care of us. He was friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed without ever hovering. My friend and I really felt looked after the whole night. Between the service, the atmosphere, and just how relaxed and enjoyable everything was, it turned into a really memorable evening. I’d definitely recommend Gardiner House to anyone wanting a special night out.

I was at Gardner House with nine other friends for two nights in September. (9/16-9/18/25). My room number 105. Mistakenly, I left my two phone chargers in the room. The hotel notified me that they were left behind. I expected the hotel to send them back to me. After a week or so, on September 30, I called and Andrew answered the phone. He told me that he would give the message to one of the receptionists because they were all busy at the moment. When I didn’t hear back from anyone, I called October 5 and spoke with Alexis. She told me that the manager would be looking into this and they would be returned. On October 17 I spoke with Katrina. She asked the manager, whoever that is/ was I don’t know, about the chargers and the manager told Katrina they were shipped two days ago and claimed there was a tracking number but she (Katrina) didn’t have it. I never received them. I mentioned that I, of course, would pay for the shipping and was told the hotel would charge the credit card I used to book the room. ||The fact is, I was lied to several times. I was so disappointed that this kind of treatment would come from the staff of a supposedly upscale boutique hotel. If the policy of the hotel is not to return chargers, because perhaps many guests do leave them in the rooms by mistake and it just might be too much for the staff to take the time to send them back, why didn’t someone just tell me that in the beginning. I expected more from this hotel, and was very disappointed.

This was one of the best hotels experiences I have ever had! I stayed here with my husband for a night and was extremely impressed by the entire stay. From the moment we arrived the staff was extremely accommodating, the amenities were perfection and the design is stunning! Our highlight was a delicious dinner at Flora! Would highly recommend this hotel for your Newport stay!

The evening we had reservations Emily was our hostess and was incredibly welcoming and attentive. I watched how she navigated a large crowd that entered effortlessly. From where I was sitting I watched how a woman’s walking cane kept falling over during dinner which upset the older woman. Emily noticed and came straight over and offered to hold it for her in the coat room. She saw a need and immediately took care of it. It’s a small gesture but it just shows how she pays attention to details. You have a wonderful staff working for you!

✨💎 Oh my God this is one of the most elegant properties on the island. Absolutely stunning.🤩 The rooms are huge. The story behind the property is also so interesting. You should look it up. I was there for a blowout hairstyle service for a Fabulous New Yorker visiting for work. She found my business , BEST SALON NEWPORT , online, when she was looking for concierge hair service, such as the service I provide, and requested me , rather last minute 5:30 pm, , but fortunately I was able to fit her in for 6:30 pm 👍🎉🥂 I’m so glad I was able to. I’ve had a crush on this property for a long time and I was finally able to see it from the inside looking out , I had the pleasure of taking care of one of the employees for her baby shower back in June, I believe/ later May she told me some real interesting stuff about the history there that peaked my interest! 😊 SIMPLY FABULOUS!!!! ✨🦄 magical! 💯 Thank you for a lovely experience. I hope I can go back many many times. In the future! Todd, BEST SALON NEWPORT ✨😎

The Gardiner House was the absolute perfect place to stay during our first trip to Newport! The hotel is in a great location- walking distance to all of the shops and restaurants. Our room was very cute and clean & the bed was extremely comfortable. The Studio Bar & the views in the Flora restaurant were both a 10/10! Catharine at the front desk was so kind and wonderful. She made us feel right at home and was very welcoming and helpful with recommendations. I highly recommend this hotel and can’t wait to be back!

The Gardiner was a beautiful location for the wedding. We stayed at the Gardiner for one night for our family wedding. We had heavy equipment to lug in and out of the hotel (we did this on own). We had a handicap accessible room. Unfortunately we requested a later checkout due to the complexity of closing the Hoyer (lifts handicap humans) we were not GIVEN until 11:45 P. It was quite unfortunate, as we were left in the middle of the lobby trying to close this heavy piece of machinery. I understand most people will not come across these issues, but exceptions should and need to be made for those who have it just a little bit harder than most. This was a room that cost $1260 from 4 P until 11 A the next day. Being given a little wiggle room to figure out how to transport the machinery in and out of the narrow rooms would have been extremely appreciated. I’m sorry this feedback isn’t more positive

I've spent a lot of time in Newport and own a shop on Thames St. You'd be hard pressed to find a less hospitable place than Gardiner House. Our party of 6 adults was turned away, literally in the parking lot, for a few people wearing flip flops. All in collared shirts and just looking to enjoy a cocktail. We had just come from a wonderful lunch at 41 North. We’re not talking tank tops and backwards hats here. We were all dressed well and it was also 4pm. Instead we went to the Cooke House and 22 Bowens - which were wonderful. I'm not sure who the Gardiner House is trying to cater to, but its summer in Newport . . . not NYC.

Yelp
We went in to check out the restaurant Flora and got a beautiful table on the rooftop - it was a picture perfect evening complemented by our waitress Alix ! Her recommendations on the peach Buratta summer salad were spot on. The bartender made me a raspberry margarita that was so good I had more than one. We had the tuna carpaccio- it was the best we've ever had! The aioli on it my husband wanted to eat everyday! I am a very critical steak tartar fan having had it many places and this one was spot on!! I had the octopus for my entree and loved the flavors and especially the combination of hot and cold. My husband had the pounded filet and enjoyed every bite. We look forward to putting this restaurant on our weekly rotation. The inside bar looks super inviting for fall and winter we can't wait to try it!

Yelp
Gardiner House is such an incredible place to stay in Newport. If you aren't able to stay, I highly recommend after-dinner drinks at the bar. The bartenders are so friendly and you can even ask for hot chocolate chip cookies with your cocktail! Flora, the restaurant, has by far the best food in Newport. It has recently opened and is already the hottest place in town! Can't recommend Gardiner House and Flora enough!

Yelp
"A gem" said one guest. "best hotel in New England" said another guest. I stayed at the hotel for a week over 4th of July. The hotel lives up the hype. The location is excellent, parking abundant. The views of the waterfront are quite special. The wifi worked extremely well. The breakfast was elegant, flavorful, with piping hot coffee. The service was top notch. When I needed dining reservations the front desk worked constantly to find the right restaurant and make reservations. The valet took good care of my parking needs. The front desk got all my bags up from the car. The air-conditioned air made a welcome respite from the balmier days in Newport. The pillows, sheets, and towels best I have ever had in a hotel. The in room fridge and mini bar were fully stocked. The Studio Bar was excellent, I went there almost every night and loved Flora- I ate there two nights. I cannot recommend Garnier House highly enough after 30 years of summering in Newport- this is now my favorite Hotel, bar and restaurant- all in one place.
