"If you’re on the lookout for a unique dining experience, head to this delightful 17C “baserri” (traditional country house) surrounded by vineyards and boasting impressive views. It also features the unusual ancestral custom of burning laurel branches to ward off evil spirits before each sitting. Choose between the charming “taberna” offering a more informal menu, the fine-dining restaurant on the first floor, and a private space (usually reserved for groups) on the floor above. Chef Julen Baz showcases modern Basque cuisine with a firm focus on tradition and locally sourced ingredients and a penchant for grilled dishes. The cooking here is centred around two menus (Gurea and Garena), both of which showcase the subsistence cooking specific to Basque farmhouses and their customs over the centuries. As part of the experience, learn about native cattle breeds from the Mugarrieta cattle farm, basic preserving methods, and enjoy chilled ciders that are the perfect pairing for the desserts here." - Michelin Inspector

Don’t believe the haters! If you’re a gastronomic Neanderthal who ‘doesn’t like anchovies’ and ‘needs to go for a pizza afterwards’ then stick to your Dominos and Burger King 😜 This place is amazing. The most insanely good food, stunning scenery and a wine selections to die for. An absolute bargain for €48 euro menu. Cheaper than some ripoff pinxos places on the coast. Just do it. You will not regret it!

We found out about this restaurant by chance, farm gastronomy is what we heard. It far exceeded our expectations. The team was super friendly and very proud of Basque food traditions. This is high end cooking at its best with a real homage to what produce the region has to offer. Don't worry, the service is the opposite of stiff, they are warm and welcoming, and the view from the restaurant is great.

Oh, Miguel, Monsieur sommelier, we wish we had you in our house to recommend and explain everything to us. Garena is fine dining at its best. Michelin star and well priced for this. If you’ve ever been to Pujol in Mexico City, it’s the opposite of that, because it’s actually good and appropriately priced. Buenas vistas.

Great meal, very relaxed place in the middle of the Basque countryside. Beautiful caseiro!!! The tasting menu was simple but very well prepared and presented. Clean and powerful taste while all very well balanced. The steak on the grill was exceptional! Very friendly staff, and very accommodating, we felt very well welcomed and e enjoyed every bit of this experience. Absolutely recommended if you are looking for a top quality meal without all the extra fuss of the classic fine dining restaurant. 1 Michelin star well deserved. Also very good value to be a Michelin star. Very well done Garena

This is a fine dining experience how it should be. Not so much a theater what other restaurants of the same level have recently turned to. I highly appreciated that you could also go there on a working day and have a seasonal/ market menu lunch. It was truly delicious. The setting was beautiful and the overall atmosphere was easy. Special thanks for an impeccable 5* service and attention to our special dietary requests. As it was lunch, we opted for a few glasses of wine rather than a bottle. The sommelier was fantastic. Please don’t miss their txakolina. It’s a white wine made from the locally grown grape varieties in the vineyards you see next to the restaurant. Their txakolina is different to the ones you might tried around San Sebastian. It’s wonderful, not overly complicated, but still setting the mood right to start off your culinary journey. I would be looking forward to my next time at Garena. Highly recommend it.

An outstanding experience, with exemplary service, phenomenal food (we had the tasting menu), all combined with a wonderful story told by our host for the day. An absolute treat, thank you to the whole team.
