"If you’re on the lookout for a unique dining experience, head to this delightful 17C “baserri” (traditional country house) surrounded by vineyards and boasting impressive views. It also features the unusual ancestral custom of burning laurel branches to ward off evil spirits...Garena boasts a bar area and terrace, a main dining room on the first floor, and a second one on the floor above. Here, chef Julen Baz champions traditional Basque cooking via an array of grilled dishes, a “market” menu (weekday lunchtimes) plus an interesting tasting menu (Geroa) through which he explains the subsistence cooking specific to Basque farmhouses but from a more contemporary culinary perspective. This unique menu has to be booked for the whole table at least 48 hours in advance." - Michelin Inspector
We found out about this restaurant by chance, farm gastronomy is what we heard. It far exceeded our expectations. The team was super friendly and very proud of Basque food traditions. This is high end cooking at its best with a real homage to what produce the region has to offer. Don't worry, the service is the opposite of stiff, they are warm and welcoming, and the view from the restaurant is great.

Oh, Miguel, Monsieur sommelier, we wish we had you in our house to recommend and explain everything to us.
Garena is fine dining at its best. Michelin star and well priced for this. If you’ve ever been to Pujol in Mexico City, it’s the opposite of that, because it’s actually good and appropriately priced.
Buenas vistas.

Great meal, very relaxed place in the middle of the Basque countryside. Beautiful caseiro!!! The tasting menu was simple but very well prepared and presented. Clean and powerful taste while all very well balanced. The steak on the grill was exceptional! Very friendly staff, and very accommodating, we felt very well welcomed and e enjoyed every bit of this experience. Absolutely recommended if you are looking for a top quality meal without all the extra fuss of the classic fine dining restaurant. 1 Michelin star well deserved. Also very good value to be a Michelin star. Very well done Garena

This is a fine dining experience how it should be. Not so much a theater what other restaurants of the same level have recently turned to. I highly appreciated that you could also go there on a working day and have a seasonal/ market menu lunch. It was truly delicious. The setting was beautiful and the overall atmosphere was easy. Special thanks for an impeccable 5* service and attention to our special dietary requests. As it was lunch, we opted for a few glasses of wine rather than a bottle. The sommelier was fantastic. Please don’t miss their txakolina. It’s a white wine made from the locally grown grape varieties in the vineyards you see next to the restaurant. Their txakolina is different to the ones you might tried around San Sebastian. It’s wonderful, not overly complicated, but still setting the mood right to start off your culinary journey. I would be looking forward to my next time at Garena. Highly recommend it.

Garena is wonderful and truly an excellent experience from start to finish. I can understand why they are a Michelin star restaurant. From driving into the beautiful property to being greeted like family, Garena pays close attention to all details. The food is excellent, fresh, and made thoughtfully. Julen is an outstanding chef and an up and coming star.
