Gary's Wine & Marketplace

My first time visiting Gary’s to pick up an online order. It’s a huge store with so many good collection and options for wine, beer and spirits, including top line shelf brands. Aisles are wide. Shelves are clean and clearly marked. Super convenient to find different types and brands. They also got a cold cut section full of variety of cheese. They sell some small snacks, candies, accessories, and gift bags and baskets as well. Prices are competitive. They have membership discounts too. Associates are super friendly. Few of them greeted me and checked if I needed help. Checkout process is quick and convenient. This is really one of the nicest liquor stores I have been in Bergen.

Gary’s Wine in Closter is an okay spot, so I’m giving it 3 stars, but it definitely has its downsides. They do have a good selection of wine and spirits, and you can usually find what you’re looking for without much trouble. However, the overall atmosphere is very gloomy and a bit depressing. The store feels cold and uninviting, and that feeling unfortunately carries over to the staff as well. The employees come off as pretty cold and not very welcoming, like they’re just going through the motions instead of making customers feel comfortable. It’s not the kind of place you really enjoy browsing in. I’d go back if I needed something specific, but it’s not a place I look forward to shopping at.

I was there lately for their inventory reduction sale. Well worth the trip! I loaded up on outstanding wines with great prices. Staff was very helpful. Store was a little tight compared to their Wayne location (now a Buy-Rite), but once you get the hang of the layout, it is logical and easy to find the wines you are looking for. I'll be back!

I used to be a regular customer, but that changed after a recent incident at your store. One of your employees physically bent and broke my friend’s ID while attempting to determine whether it was legitimate. What I find difficult to understand is why the ID was not scanned or properly verified first, which is the appropriate method for checking its validity. Instead, the employee stated that “your ID feels light like fake IDs, and they break easily,” damaged the ID, and then proceeded as if nothing had occurred. If there were suspicions regarding the authenticity of the ID, the proper course of action would have been to refuse service or contact law enforcement. The ID in question is legitimate and not a fake. No apology was ever offered to my friend for this incident. Additionally, there has been an ongoing issue with one female employee whose attitude toward us has consistently been unpleasant and unprofessional, which has further contributed to our decision to stop patronizing your establishment. I felt it was important to bring this matter to your attention.

I called to order 12 bottles of assorted Cabernets as a gift The young man I spoke to asked if he can call me back and take a look what he would think would be good for this order He called back a short time Help spell the wines exactly and year I ordered on-line and gift was delivered the same day. The recipient was thrilled Awesome customer service ! Thank you Gary’s Wines !

Today I bought a Jack Daniel’s no.7 which was in a box with a ginger ale soda as a gift pack when I open it I noticed that ginger ale was expired a month ago. Don’t you feel any shame to put that expired soda in the box and sell it to customers. What if I didn’t check the expiration date and drink it ?

Gary's Wine Bar should be extremely pleased that that have Sarah as a representative. She helped me with every aspect of a difficult online order. She was remarkably helpful and ensured that I will order from Gary's in the future.

This place is great. I walked in looking for wine for a house wanting gift basket I was making. I was immediately approached by a sales associate who gave me her opinion and saved me countless minutes of googling and guessing. So friendly and helpful!

Ordered 2 gift sets of a wine for Birthday gift that was advertised on Uber eats, delivered just the bottles. They clearly posted a picture of a gift set. Spoke to the manager who was unapologetic and offered no solution to the issue while acknowledging the picture showed a different product. Will never order from here again.

I've always loved shopping at Gary's! The sales staff is incredibly knowledgeable and always take's their time to find out what my needs are and select the perfect bottle. Also, not a zoo like Total Wine. Additionally, they also have an excellent selection of gifts. I had a small issue with an order and Larry, the manager, went above and beyond rectifying the problem.

This place has everything you can think of. I know it says Wine but it also has other drinks there as well. The variety is plentiful, the staff is nice, its in a plaza so parking isn't a problem and they're always fully stocked. This is one of the few places I would go to in order to get drinks for my parties. You might as well give them a shot

Great selection of wines organized by region. If you would like to add a charcuterie board while enjoying a glass of wine, plenty of cheeses to choose from. Need a gift, no problem pick up a gift set and impress your friends or loved ones! Definitely will go back!

I like the convenience since I am always picking something up at Closter Plaza. But sometimes with convenience comes price. Their wines are on the pricey side. Wine selection is good and varied. Beer selection however not so great. They focus more on the InBev beers but I am more interested in beers from smaller breweries. Service is good. They ask if you need help but they are not pushy like Total Wine. I come here when in a pinch and need a bottle or two. But definitely not a place to fill the wine fridge since they also do not offer any kind of bulk discount.

Very good selection of wine. Great looking store. Great addition to neighborhood. They also deliver-Saved me a couple times for gifts.

I originally visited looking for Gruet Noir, a very nice gentlemen sent a message (via radio) for see if it was in stock. He relayed to me that they were out of stock. I go back for it, they don't have it. I pick up some other prosecco wines that I think may be comparable. They are fine but more expensive. Second, third time around, I go back looking for other prosecco wines, and they are out of them. I try to pick items according to "Gary's Direct" but don't get the discount for six bottles. SCAM.

This place is my go-to every weekend. EVERYONE is super friendly and is always willing to help! Katie is one of the best employees there, and I have never gone wrong with her recommendations. Gary's has not only a great selection of wine but also cheese/crackers/olives. Just ask and everyone is jumping in to help you find the best purchase :)

Great selection of wines (albeit pricier than Total Wine) and I love that you have a cheese and charcuterie section but PLEASE appoint someone more experienced in that department. The young man who cut our cheese massacred one piece into unappetizing chunks and the other piece was three times the size I needed. It also took him forever to slice and wrap meat. Jamon Iberico at $89/lb should be sliced on a Jamonero. This department needs to be more professionally run. If I'm paying $10-20 per piece of cheese, it needs to cut to better standards and much much faster.

What kind of wine store keeps its wine in a 70+ degree temperature environment. Wine should be at 55, and 65 at the warmest. Also, half of the staff their doesn't know where anything is, or the basics of wine. Two stars for ok selection, cleanliness, value.

This place has an amazing selection and the staff are very knowledgeable. The manager on the other hand is zero friendly does not make you feel welcome. Makes me not want to return.

While visiting my daughter I needed some supplies and happened into Garys new Closter store. What a beautiful store that had everything! I loved the cheeses and the wine samples. The Manager was friendly and gave me a quick guide in Bordeaux, the daughter is a Bordeaux aficionado and besides a great bottle the cheese to go with it was perfect. He was extremely Knowledgeable and he is very funny. Best part is private wine room with hard to find wines. I wish I had one close to where I live but anytime I'm in the area it's my new "go to" liquor store, it has it all in a "laid back" no hurry atmosphere.

Very disappointing. Even though they have a large variety, the staff has little knowledge of wine. Once I asked for Marsala and the girl told me no one by that name worked there. The other day we went for a tasting of Rose wine. The rude man behind the counter loudly said to his co worker "all these people think it's a party and are just here for free wine". He barely poured enough to taste. And we bought 4 bottles. Even though it's right down the street I won't be back.

Very pleased with the customer service. I placed a very large order on line. some of my items were not available, so the manager called me right away and offered substitutions. Everything was delivered the next day to my doorstep. Highly recommend

Gary's wine in Closter has a good selection of wines, beers and spirits. Their prices are reasonable. The sales associates in the isles are always willing to help. I was a bit disappointed that the cashier was inconvenienced when I checked out, noting that my request was "such a process."

Gary's is ok for liquor or wine. Don't dare buy anything besides that. I had the misfortune of picking up a small bag of nestle chocolate without looking at the price (my fault). After a bit of confusion I looked at the price 14.00 for a small bag of Hershey chocolate. I went back and both me and Cashier were confused that a small bag of chocolate was so expensive. Maybe wine and liquor are reasonably priced so that they can rip you of on cheese and side items. If you are only going for alcohol than Gary's is ok. Otherwise go somewhere else for the extras.

I seriously Love this location is well organized, big, clean with very friendly staff and you can find everything you want, just perfect best of luck and welcome to the neighborhood.

This is a new, beautiful store, and the wine I was looking for was on sale for a terrific price. Not only is there a great wine selection but there is also a large area devoted to cheese selection and even some chocolates. This is a perfect place to visit when you have guests coming over.

I am giving the two on the selection of products carried in the store which is the positive. The leadership in the store is shaky. I've been to this location 12-15.times. The manager doesn't give positive affirmations. He is skilled at shaking his head and giving a "no" to any questions. If you work in a retail environment, positive responses bring sales. Also, know your stock! It trickles down to the staff and they are unable to achieve their potential as there is a culture of negativity. Happy staff means happy customers. Change the guy with glasses and you will see a positive change in the tills.

"Too big for their boots" Snotty young salespeople who don't really care what you're looking for, and they most likely won't have what you're looking for in stock. All I was looking for was SkinnyGirl Cranberry Cosmo, Beringer White Zinfandel, and/or Papi Sauvignon Blanc - nothing crazy that ALL the other liquor stores in EVERY town around here carry. I'll never go back.

Wines are slightly on the pricier side, but picked up a few good deals here over the past few years. You need to know what you want and do a little homework before heading down. Always enjoy a quick wine education chit chat with Alex who is super enthusiastic about anything wine related. Store is clean, well organized. A bit disappointed that tastings are no longer provided (due to covid) and it would be great to bring them back as well as conduct classes to build a community of wine (and liquor) lovers.

Great wine store. Frank has been helping me and he really knows what I like and all about wines. Ask for Frank he will find you an awesome bottle at what ever price range you want.

It's a shame I can give only 5 stars to Gary's, as a company and especially for the Closter, NJ store and it's manager, Larry. I'll try to keep this short. Gary's sent an update about my order, saying they would let me know when it was filled. I kinda panicked and replied I needed it the next morning for a birthday party. Less than 20 minutes later, Patty in the Wayne, NJ called and said they have what I ordered in Wayne but not in Closter (near my house). We had some conversation and Patty said she'd check with Larry to see what can be done. The next thing I know, Patty is on the phone telling me Larry sent one of his staff to drive to Wayne and pick up my order. And not for pickup the next day, but in a couple of hours! I was completely floored by that amazing customer service and was happy to meet Larry and tell him in person. I've been a Gary's member/customer for a few years, but this customer experience has made me a true and loyal Gary's fan. Try them, I doubt you would ever be disappointed! My husband and I enjoy shopping and browsing the shelves at Gary's. Thankfully, every time we have been there Frank has assisted in our selections. He is quite knowledgeable about both beer and wine. He has recommended some fantastic beer for our Super Bowl party this year. Cheers and thank you Frank!

Gary's had everything I needed for the holiday weekend. I have been critical of businesses in this time, but Gary's had great social distancing guidelines in both the aisles and registers. I was in and out in no time. 10/10 experience.

Gary's is my go-to place for wine. The staff is always friendly and helpful and the wines are fairly priced. They also have a great gourmet cheese and snack selection as well as gifts and wine/liquor accessories; it's basically a one-stop shop for all of your party/entertaining needs. Also, you can taste up to 4 wines at a time for free, which is a great perk!

Wow, what a wonderful family-run establishment! Excellent selection and reasonable prices. The staff was was very attentive and suggested some lovely white wines and cheese to pair with it. This is the type of place that this country needs more of, and that I'm proud to support. I'm looking forward to returning next time I'm in the area.

The customer service is amazing at Gary's. They're all extremely helpful. If there's ever a problem, they work with you. You can order cases of wine for pickup.

It was my first time in the new store over the weekend and this place is just what the neighborhood needed. I was able to get everything I needed for an impromptu party and Gary himself helped select the wines! The service was great, the shop is hip and the prices were fair. In addition, my guests were impressed with the wines. I learned that they deliver which is a huge plus!

I have attended 2 excellent Wine tasting classes with Juile Margolis. The first was on Rose the second on Loire Valley. Julie was knowlegable and passed the information on in a fun way. Both tastings prompted me to purchase wines I had not know about and enjoyed. I would be interested in more wine tastings and possible a full class with her.

Picked up from here once and have never revisited while their selection is extensive their staff is so rude. There are a bunch of adolescents working there who are clearly unorganized and rude. I talked to a girl on the phone who mistakenly told me my order could not be picked up without checking my order number first as she should've! super incompetent! After complaining about not getting the bottle on the same day as I was promised she decided to do the least of her job and check my order number and realized it was ready the whole time. I seriously had to deal with her raising her voice and berating me through the phone for 10 minutes and did not even get the apology I was entitled to receive afterwards. To make things worse a young man gave me my bottle and gave me attitude when I asked to talk to the manager, I guess the whole staff was gossiping about what had happened and decided to gang up on me what a waste of time. Finally got the manager to come out after arguing with this young man and she apologized for her incompetent employees. IM TELLING U THESE KIDS NEED TO BE FIRED THE RUDEST AND MOST INCOMPETENT SAVE YOURSELF SOME TIME AND STRESS AND GO TO BOTTLE KING.

Great store, classy. But customer service sucked. Bunch of teens that neglected to help me when I requested. Wines seem a little pricey as well. Eh store

What a place! When they say to be a good leader is to lead by example, then Larry, Manger of this Gary's is a great leader. I stopped in to pick up some wine and check out this new store and was amazed at the attention to detail, the very personable staff, and the dedication to help customers like myself who are not too wine savvy. I found myself looking for a wine to pair with my dinner I was making for my wife and I and was approached by a very humorous and knowledgeable man. He took the time to explain to me what wines to pair with my dinner and why. Suggested others as well for other functions and gatherings and when I had asked him who the manager was to compliment him was amazed that it was him in front of me who took the time to talk with me and not just sell to me. This is definition of a great leader, taking time to get involved with customers on more than just a financial level! I will return again! Great job Larry and great store.
