Without a doubt, the worst restaurant experience I have ever had.
It was a family gathering, with family arriving from all across Germany, and the initial impression was positive. However, as the evening progressed the service became basically non-existent and progressively more unfriendly. There were several periods of more than 30 minutes where not a single member of staff would attend the Biergarten. In general, the staff were friendly, but simply completely understaffed, the exception was the head waitress who was incredibly unfriendly and openly hostile. Some quotes from the evening:
If you sat inside it would be quicker (“Wenn Sie drinnen sitzen würden, ginge es schneller”) – At this point in the evening inside was completely full, in a pandemic, where nobody was asked to show proof of vaccination or testing. If the Biergarten is offered it should be served, and this attitude left us dumbfounded.
Hotel guests are sitting inside (“Drinnen sind Hausgäste”) – this attitude that restaurant guests are treated as second class customers is simply insane for a restaurant. Not to mention that 4 people at our table were also staying in the hotel for several nights.
The process didn’t allow it (“Es ging vom Ablauf nicht”) – some background, 2 members of our group ordered starters as a main course, and when we were ordering this was completely fine. When the starters arrived, so did their “main course” starters. When asked about this, the head waitress said very bluntly “Es ging vom Ablauf nicht” und walked away with no further comment, no apology, and no chance for any further questions. As a result, when the main courses arrived (approximately 2 hours after the starters), 2 members of our group had nothing to eat, and we ended up sharing the food from the rest of our group with them.
The above quotes were delivered very bluntly and in an openly hostile tone, as if it was out fault that we were not being served, we also overhead the neighbouring table also ask the staff later in the evening “is it possible that we also get dessert at some point”, so we were not alone in our predicament. Were it not for the fact that it was late in the evening, and we were staying in the hotel, we would have paid for our starters and left before the main course. The restaurant was woefully understaffed, and the attitude of the head waitress is absolutely abhorrent.
Regarding the other aspects of the food, it was mediocre and not what one would expect for the price (3 course meal was €39). While not massively expensive, still above the what the meal was worth. Some of our group ordered steak and the medium steak was cooked exactly the same as the well-done steak (spoiler: they were all well done). Also, the sizes of the steak varied wildly, with the largest being between 30 and 50% larger than the smallest. The portions are relatively small, which would be fine if the meals were served within a reasonable timeframe, however with literal hours between courses, you may leave hungrier than when you arrived, with several members of our group eating their rations that they had prepared for hiking as soon as we paid as they were too hungry to sleep. Were the service of a reasonable standard, I would rate the food as 3 stars.
