Yelp
Gastro earned acclaim for the best gyro in Portland when they were a food cart. Today was my first experience at their sit-down and they are still knocking it out of the park.
I opted for the pork and lamb (their most popular option) gyro plate rather than a standalone "sandwich", the rice is so good. The side salad is kinda blah as the dressing doesn't speak Middle Eastern, it seems more fitting on an Asian salad. Moreover, their hummus is just average, a far second from that served at Nicholas' or Ya Hala. Be sure to ask for their excellent jalapeño relish, it complements the rice and pita well.
We also ordered the Chef's Special Salad which included octopus, shrimp, tuna, and squid ink rice. Maybe a tad too much salt, but still good. Round out your meal with a very good version of Baklava.
Their only miss is more of an irritation: the breakfast burrito is the first item listed on the menu, but its unavailable on weekends. Why? I'm sure it's some operational efficiency thing, but it's a pet peeve when restaurants limit hours or days for breakfast items. Crack and egg on Friday, crack it on Saturday or Sunday; even McDonalds serves breakfast all day.
The staff is very friendly, paid street parking sucks, and prices and portions are fair.
