I stayed here for 4 nights and had a very nice stay. The bed was firm which is what I required due to my back issues, the lighting was good, it was clean, and the toilet & shower had good pressure. Check-In & Check Out was a breeze. The location made it easy to find and there are good restaurants and shops within walking distance. Thank you Gateway hotel Santa Monica for providing a nice hotel in the local area. I highly recommend this hotel.

This is an uncomplicated hotel on Santa Monica Boulevard. Not very close to the beach, but there is a great bus service (Route 1) right outside. There is a simple breakfast included in the price. My room was spacious, had a brand new bathroom and a good choice of TV channels. Nothing to complain about.

Google
Place is nice and clean. But the breakfast is sad. We've been traveling old route 66 for 21 days spending days in cheap motels that had better selection than this for 40$ . We wanted to spoil ourselves a little with a nice hotel before we go back home to Scandinavia. Paid 300$ +deposit for 1 night. Expected way more for the price. Doesn't even have a pool.

Google
The staff was friendly, and they let me check in early. The room was nice, with the exception of hair in the shower, on the floor, and in the sink area. The odd part is that the gym is outside the hotel, where you must walk. Parking is $18 a day, so be mindful of that. The restaurant was excellent! Go there and try anything on the menu.

We had 4 nights accomodation at this lovely hotel and we really had a positive experience. It is a clean and well organized hotel. The housekeeping is doing great work. It has its own parking area with additional fee but the area is really big and has direct access to the rooms. The hotel is usually quiet so you can sleep well. It has a grab and go breakfast opportunity as well and they provide fresh fruits, cereals and even pancakes to the guests. The beach is 35 min away by walking but as we have a car, we preferred to reach by car and the beach area has plenty parking opportunities. I would definitely choose this hotel again for my next trip to LA.

My husband and I stayed here for a week while on vacation. We arrived about 6 hours before check in. We were tired from the plane and had heavy bags. The front desk lady was so nice and had them check to see if a room was available for early check in. And it was. The room was fabulous! Exactly like the pictures on their website! The bathroom was spotless and the bed was clean and so comfortable! The staff was so friendly and accommodating!! I highly recommend staying here! Great location too! We were able to walk to the third street promenade and the Santa Monica pier!

Google
I had great experience over Mother's day weekend. The room was simple but nice, clean, good condition. Breakfast is OK, at least they had some eggs, yogurt, pancake, fruit. Coffee was good enough:) I really enjoyed the outside sun deck on 4th floor!

Google
If you’re just looking for a place to stay in Santa Monica without any unnecessary hassle or stress, this hotel is pretty good. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable, but the location is what shines brightest. Nothing fancy but well worth the price. Parking isn’t free but it is available, convenient, and easy.

Yelp
The condition of our hotel room was awful. Bathroom door would not lock and the handle fell off! Sink the water was splashing on us. Water in the shower got cold after 10 minutes! Elevator was really slow, which made it inconvenient. The "free" breakfast was a disappointment, they ran out of coffee and machine made pancakes no thanks, and quality of produce terrible and lastly, granola bars? I could've picked some up on my way over. The people at the desk were nice and that's the only positive

Yelp
Had to have surgery nearby at UCLA medical. I could see this place on the map, so knew it was close by. Not sure if they offer special deals for people that are there for medical procedures, but they should. Front desk staff was okay. Our room wasn't ready so we had to come back later. I was told parking is $16.50 per day. I hope that's accurate. We'll see on my credit card.

Yelp
Great location next to the hospital. If you don't mind walking, you can walk to the Santa Monica pier. Driving wise, you're close to Fairfax/Wilshire where all the museums are. Next door to this place is a great restaurant & bar on the corner. It's a little pricey, but I was in town to see family so kinda worth it. Yelp
My sister and I stayed one night. It started off ok, the room was a bit hot so we opened the windows and turned on the AC. About 10 minutes into our stay there was a knock on the door and the hotel staff opened the door with their key even though the do not disturb sign was hanging on the door knob. They were apologetic but it was a bit unnerving. On the way to the event we were attending that night, we stopped at the front desk to let them know that someone had entered our room but had been stopped by the lock on the inside of the door. They were apologetic. Fast forward to the end of the night when we came back from the event. We walked into the room and were hit with a blast of heat. The room was extremely hot, the heater was on and the windows and blinds were closed despite having been open when we left the room. It was OBVIOUS someone had been in the room and had closed the windows. Now thoroughly freaked, we called the front desk to let them know. The woman couldn't help us except to send someone to give us new keys and to help us get the AC to work which was going between on and off and heat and cool. The man who came to give us the keys did not speak, just handed the keys and left. It left us feeling disconcerted. We spent the rest of the night trying to get the AC to work, it kept turning on and off and going from hot to hotter. It was the worst night we have experienced in a hotel. The next day I spoke to the manager who told me that no one opened our door after 10:20pm which he said was us coming back to the room although I explained that we were still at our event at 10:30pm. He also did a great job of explaining how a double window works, thinking perhaps we had accidentally closed it and the blinds and didn't realize. Thanks. He did offer us a 50% off of our stay but honestly I feel like we were not heard and nothing will be done about the safety issues at this hotel. Will never stay here again and will never recommend.

Yelp
First and most important, the customer service is the best. They were so nice and friendly. My kids loved the place and the ambiance and cleanliness was remarkable. Thank you again!!

Yelp
Second time here. Santa Monica is expensive so about $300 a night in the summer begins to sound ok. $15 for safe parking below. The hotel is neat and clean and centrally located. The room staff are friendly and polite and do a good job. The front desk staff were less than friendly on both my visits. The hotel is near a major hospital so you hear sirens and traffic. I kept the AC and fan on all night so the white noise helped. Appreciated water bottles the first night. The small touches made a difference. The location of Tartine Bakery down the street is an enticement, as is the convenience of Socalo restaurant next door.

Yelp
Seriously Santa Monica, you can do better. The price you are paying is strictly for the location And this hotel knows it. They provide the absolute bare minimum in comfort. Motel 6 provides better amenities. The 'breakfast' they pretended to offer when I stayed was machine made pancakes, that's it, just pancakes that people are all standing in a line for- nothing else, NO proteins, yogurt, cereal etc.. the receptionist are nice, but fail to mention that if you would like coffee or tea, cream or sugar or a cup to drink it with you'll have to ask for it. Which means you'll find yourself making a trip back down to the lobby to get what you need. They claim it has something to do with Covid, which is insane...

Yelp
For our time in the LA area we stayed at Gateway. The hotel is very nice. Tricky to get into- the driveway is tucked into the building. I managed. But I did not enjoy it. Check in was a breeze. The desk staff was friendly and helpful. The room is surprisingly big for a city hotel, and very well appointed. The room and bath were clean. The sheets fresh. Breakfast at the Gateway is a prepared bag of light fare. Okay, but it would be nice to be able to pick your own things. I can't eat oats and don't eat artificial sweetener. The bag had a granola bar and fakey yogurt. Parking is extra but worth it. The garage located under the hotel makes coming and going very convenient. I would stay at Gateway again if I found myself in Santa Monica.

Elaine M.

Yelp
Clean comfortable room. However a few disappointing items: breakfast is grab and go but selection is mediocre and prepackaged muffins wavered between stale and outright moldy. Two muffins were disgusting Why is one person allowed in a gym at a time? Why are appointments set up for one hour sessions only? Could not use gym for a block of time even though it was empty as someone must have left before the end of appointment. Even more weird is after someone leaves the gyms is closed down for one half hour to be cleaned. Lastly I asked for a second manicure kit and was told no. Very odd and lacking in hospitality. Debatable whether I will recommend or return .

Yelp
Super clean room. When we asked for something higher up we were treated very nicely and we changed rooms. Not a luxury place by any means and having to go down for coffee supplies is a little weird, but all in all we were very satisfied. Comfy bed!!! We are repeat visitors. If you are bad at parking you will be challenged by the very narrow parking spots in the underground lot. Trust the process!

Chris G.

Yelp
My husband stayed here while I was in the hospital. He said that the staff were very accommodating and his room was very clean and nice.

Bruna L.

Yelp
This is a great affordable nice hotel. The only disappointing thing was the breakfast, cause they don't have a lot of options (only pancakes and cereal) and not a lot of spots to sit and eat. But the staff is super sweet and always helpful.

Yelp
Kinda clean but old, dark and extremely noisy.. zero amenities. Not a place to house a surrogate on bed rest.. shame on you, Dr John Jain of Santa Monica Fertility, Pinnacle Fertility and pinnacle Surrogacy.
google avatar

Yelp
Great location and very clean! Room are sorely overdue for new beds (not comfortable and sagging) and installation of multiple USB ports inside the rooms. Good price, but didn't mention the $16.50 parking fee upon booking.

Yelp
I stayed her one night for the LA Marathon 2020 and the Gateway did good... Front Desk Lobby: The staff was very friendly with our check in. We requested an extremely late check out at 6 PM and they were able to accomodate us for $69. We needed the room to shower and rest after the 26.2 mile race. The lobby had a nice lounge area to relax in and there were some PCs available for internet access and to print boarding passes. The whole area looked renovated and had a clean minimalist theme. Rooms: We had two queens in our room and the renovated clean minimalist theme was evident here as well. The floors were wooden and the bathroom was spotless. We received two complimentary bottled waters. There's a refrigerator to keep drinks/food cold and the flat screen was newer and operational. Overall this is a pretty nice hotel that's about 1.5 miles away from 3rd street promenade and the Santa Monica Pier. It's away from the traffic madness that occurs in that area. It's an easy Uber there or using any of the motorized scooters works too. There's a couple of dining options within a 1/2 mile radius if you want to stay close as well. I will definitely check out the gateway next time I'm staying in the Santa Monica area again. Bon Voyage!

Yelp
Ok long overdue review -- I just rebooked this hotel after staying here in June 2021 when my brother was in the hospital and COVID was ruining everything. Shout out to office manager Angie and back office Fabbie for being so helpful with some crazy challenges I had adjusting my stay. The room was clean and for Santa Monica (or the entire west side) it's inexpensive. If you want to pay less go to a less safe neighborhood. People keep complaining about noisy guests -- well, then you should talk to them or ask the desk to talk to them. Too bad we can't rate other guests!

Stefani C.

Yelp
My husband and I had to travel to Santa Monica for a medical procedure. This hotel was perfectly located so we did not have to reply on transportation to/from the doctor. We were booked elsewhere and when we came upon it, we stopped in to see if there was availability. We were assisted by Angie ( you will know her the minute you see her as she has the most stunning, ice blue eyes). She was insanely kind, accommodating and professional. The hotel was clean, the bed was super comfortable (even the pillows) and although under the crummy circumstances for our visit, it was about as perfect as it could be. Every once in a while, you have an outstanding customer service experience that sticks with you and this was certainly one of those times for us. My husband and I will not soon forget the exceptional kindness Angie showed us and we will return because of it!

Yelp
What a great little gem with free parking. :p We stayed here last minute as a walk-in. The receptionist was very welcoming and was happy to book a room for us. We booked one night at first but given the great service and the comfy rooms, we ended up staying 2 nights. The hotel is spotless clean. The decor is very nice put together. My favorite were the pictures on the walls of old Santa Monica! I could describe but its a must see. It makes you wanna travel back in time. They have all the amenities: Free parking, breakfast (due to COVID-19 madness they provide with breakfast bags), office space with free printing, coffee and it is within walking distance to so many restaurants and coffee shops. They also have free parking :p Overall I recommend this hotel. They are worth the price and a way better option in the area. We will definitely be back next time we have business there. Oh also, they offer military discount.

Yelp
Nice clean room, nice beds, decent hotel. Not a lot of amenities. The front desk employees are rude and unaccommodating.

Yelp
Weekend stay. Served its purpose and was comfortable and clean all around. Bathroom was roomy. Doesn't look like much on the outside and unassuming. Service was consistently pleasant and helpful. Continental breakfast was something as opposed to nothing, but it can be missed.

Yelp
If you want sleep, go someplace else! The absolute worst hotel experience I have ever had!!! The person upstairs sounded like he was moving furniture from 10pm to 3am. I finally called to complain. I got 3 hours of sleep in a very sunken bed and heard noises from the hall and even outside. Someone screamed with laughter outside around 2am and I was almost asleep, scared me and then the guy upstairs continued to move stuff. The walls are thin!!! Also there are no curtains over the shutters so you can't even sleep in a dark room, it was like a 4pm nap. Horrible horrible experience and a complete waste of $300

Yelp
Decent hotel in a good neighborhood. Bed was soft, but sheets had a few old spots on them. Ammentities in the room were nice. Staff was a bit odd last night when I checked in, but it was midnight so they may have been tired. Shower was a wheelchair access but the water came out of the shower onto bathroom floor, had to use towels to soak it up.
google avatar

Yelp
Owned by Best Western, I would've enjoyed my stay, but the noisy guests kept jolting me out of my sleep. A man kept moaning, ohh, ohh, ohh in the room above me, plus I heard someone running. People laughing and talking after 1AM. I asked for a room change after checking in, since the mattress was lumpy. The clerk pretended as if there were no more king size beds and suggested the first floor but miraculously put me in the room next door. Found 3 hairs in the tub of the second bathroom, although it was clean. I received a breakfast bag after check out. I don't know why they received a fabulous review on hotels.com

Diane F.

Yelp
The worst hotel that I stayed ever. Do not recommend it at all. Very rude staff. The receptionist had so much attitude that was unbelievable. I will definitely call their management and express my concerns. Avoid booking here
google avatar

Leticia G.

Yelp
The room was extremely clean. Very comfy. They do charge for parking. Also, make sure to ask for internet information. I called front desk 3/28 around 940pm for the wifi user name and password I was placed on hold for 10 minutes then I lady rushed to give me username and password and hung up on me. The information did not log me in. I called back and again was quickly placed on hold again. This place would be rank 5 stars if it was for the horrible customer service. They definitely need to invest in employee attitude training. Still on hold, let's see how the 2nd call goes. Update the reception by the name Chrissy finally answered 15 minutes later. I warned her to NOT to hang up on me. I finally obtained respect and logged into the internet.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel last week as we were both going through a lot and needed a little getaway . I decided to book with Gateway through booking.com as it looked nice . Come to our surprise , it was not what we expected and the cleanliness was BAD! We wanted to sit on the chairs but it was dirty and stained . Also be careful because the sheets may appear "clean" but as we started taking blankets off we found dead bugs and hair on the sheets. I really wanted to call the lobby and ask if the sheets can please be changed but I decided not to and just tried to enjoy my stay and make the best of it . Also this hotel has no nice views . There's nothing around and you'll probably get a view of an alley. We tried to make the best of our stay but I don't think we will be back .

Yelp
I stayed here recently for 2 nights ,as a family member was having surgery across the street at St. John's hospital. I was pleasantly surprised by the spacious, immaculately clean room and bathroom. Staff were all friendly and accommodating . Bed was so comfortable and the quality of the linens was fine. Bathroom amenities were also good with nice large bath towels. The shower was terrific with excellent water pressure. This hotel is a great value for anyone who wishes to stay in the Santa Monica area and not pay Ocean Avenue sky-high rates. One will not have an ocean view but a quick Uber ride can get you to the beach in 10 minutes. Bonus points for having a great restaurant right next door.
google avatar

Jon M.

Yelp
This is a run down, tacky hotel with bad furniture and very poor staff. The receptionist and even maintenance staff are unprofessional and rude. Apparently they get alot of guests using the nearby hospital but my advice is look elsewhere.
google avatar

J B.

Yelp
Upon check-in, Mariana at the front desk pleasantly explained the process and amenities and made my wife and I feel at home-- no small feat when everyone is 6ft away from each other and wearing masks! Sometimes the staff alone can make a place worth staying and this is one of those cases. Mariana helped find another room for us, which was a very kind gesture. I hope everyone on the staff rocks as much as she does! The only minor-- and I mean minor -- change I would suggest to the hotel would be to include inside the room a small notice about what has been sanitized in the room. This would spare us from going a little over-the-too with the hand sanitizer.
google avatar

Jay H.

Yelp
Very nice, clean, good shower, TV works, air conditioning works. That's all I need for a hotel stay. Special mention for Angie, the lady at the front desk who appears to be a manager (or should be) for all her help.
google avatar

Chelsea A.

Yelp
I'm staying at this hotel for work so we had to find a hotel in the area that wasn't too pricey. Well I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into my room. It was super clean and organized. But the bed was absolutely fantastic. I slept wonderfully and the pillows were amazing. They offered complimentary breakfast which was pretty good as well. Their WiFi is great! And their staff has been extremely helpful and polite. This hotel has been a wonderful stay for the price we paid!!

Yelp
This place is great for if you want somewhere close to the pier and Venice beach, but definitely not if you want anything overly comfortable or glamorous. It's the basics - which worked fine for me. The staff wasn't very friendly but I did arrive at the end of the day so that could have been part of it.
google avatar

Renee L.

Yelp
This is my favorite hotel to stay in when I'm in Santa Monica. I drive up for the UCLA doctors & this location is perfect for me. The staff is always so friendly & accommodating. The parking is free, but most important are the rooms. The rooms are larger as well as the bathrooms. They give you two free bottles of water with your stay. The free breakfast is adequate, but nothing special. I always feel safe here even when I have traveled alone. You have to use your room key to get up to your floor on the elevator. I can be picky when it comes to hotels, so if I'm a repeat guest that says a lot. This use to be a Best Western but is now independently owned. There are lots of restaurants & coffee shops close by. The freeway isn't far either. The beach & Promenade are a short car ride away.

Yelp
My wife and sister booked rooms at this hotel, we stayed on the highest floor, everything seemed ok at first, but there's a few things about this hotel that didn't sit well with us: 1). Surveillance Cameras: We understand Security is necessary and a must in the common areas but we also had a feeling that we were being watched inside our rooms, I thought it was just in my head until I mentioned it to my wife and sister and they both thought it was funny and disturbing at the same time due to the fact that they felt the same way. This place needs to be investigated. 2). We did not like the feeling of being locked out of the hotel were I belongings remained coming back to the hotel late at night. The elevators are programmed to not go up from the underground parking after 10pm, so we had to walk up stairs to the front entrance were either the security or front desk person has to open the door for you in order to be let in the hotel, if someone was chasing you you're basically done because you can't run in safely into the hotel, same goes for the underground parking, if someone was trying to rob you in the parking area at night, you can't just hurry up and try to get inside the elevators since they stop the elevators at 10pm, We know Security is watching through the cameras but by the time Security is able to do something it most likely will be too late. This is totally inconsiderate of the hotel. If they really want to be secure, have security located in the underground parking area at least at night. 3). My sister said she felt one of the engineers or maintenance guys seemed coincidentally always come behind her when she would go down to her car in the parking area. Since they're watching through the cameras, this was creeping her out. Every time she went down stairs she said 20 seconds later there he was like clockwork. Please educate your staff on sexual harassment. 4). We're adults, we shouldn't feel like we're sneaking into our dorm rooms coming back late night, specially since we're paying for the rooms. 5). Don't be fooled by the front desk staff, they're actually rude, the more days you stay the more rude they get, most likely because you'll start noticing everything wrong with this hotel the longer you stay so they try to make you feel like a burden if you stay longer than a week. We stayed for 1 week and noticed the changes. 6). The Housekeeping Staff is loud in the mornings, they talk to each from across the halls loud, the maintenance guy watered the balconies at 7am hitting our glass door startling us in our sleep without any consideration. The housekeeping staff damn near wants to force you to request your room to be serviced so they can look and go through your belongings. We noticed the lady cleaning our room while we were in the room preoccupied with trying to see what we had instead of focusing on cleaning the room, she asked us if we would like for her to change our sheets and we said yes but she never did, clearly just making conversation to distract us from noticing what she was doing. Most of The hotel staff are very unprofessional and sneaky, and are way too preoccupied with what guests are doing, obsessed even. During these times with Covid-19, most people want to stay in a place that will help them forget about stress and feel comfortable, this hotel just added to our stress, the reasonable prices weren't even worth it in the end. I Do Not Recommend this Hotel.

Yelp
This is a very reasonably priced hotel in a great location in Santa Monica. The young girls at the front desk are very nice and helpful and knowledgeable. If you have a problem I'm sure they can help you in someway. You have a couple of hospitals nearby, Target, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods Market, and Erewhon market are all nearby. There are also plenty of different coffee shops within walking distance of the hotel. It has always been clean every time I have stayed here. You get a nice flat screen TV, a small refrigerator, a small safe, and an ironing board and iron. The free parking downstairs is a really good thing to have in Santa Monica, as street parking is hard to come by. You cannot access the upper floors without a key card, so you feel pretty safe and secure when you stay here. I highly recommend this hotel as I have stayed here many times and have never had a problem.

Yelp
The place was amazing they were kind enough to let us check in early as my husband is having surgery down the street the service was fabulous everything was right near by the even had a little sundeck that we could sit outside and I could see the hospital from the deckThey have precautions in place for Covid and they stick to them well all in all I would highly recommend this hotel

Yelp
Booked this room while in the area visiting my son who is attending UCLA. The staff was friendly and responsive to questions & requests. The Lobby and rooms were clean. The beds were comfortable. They offer a complimentary continental breakfast thats pretty typical (coffee, juice, cold cereal, things that be toasted, pastries, yogurt & fruit). The hotel had a restaurant that was closed. It would enhance the hotel if this were to re-open. There is a fitness room on site. There is also a large meeting room. The downside to this hotel is its proximity to a very busy street, which is why reopening the restaurant would be convenient. The price per night is average. We were here during Bruin Family weekend, so hotels near UCLA booked fast. I selected it because of its proximity to where our son lives off campus. Based on comfort and location to our son I will definitely consider staying here again. However it's location makes getting to the freeway longer than it should take based on distance.

Yelp
I wish I could give this place 10 stars!! My family has been staying here for going on two weeks now as we have a family member in the hospital nearby. Two people who have gone above and beyond for us during this time is Janet and another lady with dark hair and glasses. The staff have been accommodating and understanding of our situation and have helped with every request. We will forever be grateful for how kind the staff has been to us. The rooms and overall hotel have been clean and they have been taking precautions to be safe during this time.

Yelp
One of my Go-To Hotels in Santa Monica. PROS - Lots: - New / Renovated - Clean - Affordable / Good Price - Central Location in Santa Monica - Staff is very friendly and helpful - FREE Parking (and Underground / Covered) for hotel guests! - Bathroom has a lot of Counterspace - an important convenience feature that a lot of hotels seem to overlook - Empty Fridge for storing perishable food / drinks - Some reservations come with Free Breakfast... I got it on my second-last stay there but for some reason did not get it during my last stay there... CON(S) - Not that many but: (1) Their Reservation System has a lot of bugs that they need to fix. - Reservation Confirmation email has NO Contact Info (No Phone Number, No Email) in case you need to cancel or modify your reservation. - The Online Cancellation mechanism does NOT work. In addition to no Phone or Email Contact, when I cancelled online, it said I would receive an email confirming cancellation but none was sent. Then later it sent me an email telling me about my upcoming reservation (which was supposedly cancelled). When I called the Hotel (phone number online since no contact info in the reservation email), the hotel person said they could not cancel for me because I had reserved it through "Google". In fact, I had reserved through the Gateway Hotel website but when you register through their website, it takes you to a Rewards Program registration site where you register using your email. The system then indicates that you registered through (your email service supposedly) even though it was through the hotel website. Very frustrating. (2) Limited Amenities and Supplies - Some things you can get from Housekeeping upon request (e.g. slippers, robes) they don't have.

Yelp
The management for this hotel is horrible. They kept me in the lobby for an hour and 15 minutes because my car to chip didn't work. They ended up swiping the card anyway. They could've done an hour and 15 minutes ago not upset me so much. What a horrible hotel. We don't have a choice. Will only be staying here one night. Find another hotel if you can this is not worth it

Yelp
My company booked this hotel for my one night stay and I was very happy with the room. It was very clean, okay size (not huge, but not tiny either), decent amenities: nice desk & chair, separate seating, plenty of outlets at desk and bedside table, cold fridge, coffee, nice toiletries, safe inside roomy armoire, great WiFi, comfy bed and a quiet AC unit. The bathroom was super clean and I'm very OCD about cleanliness in hotel bathrooms and rooms. They even have a little "sanitary" pouch for the TV remote. I still wiped it down with my wipes lol but I've never seen that before even in a 5 star hotel. This is a 3.5 star hotel but I'm giving it 5 stars for cleanliness. Parking garage is a little sketch as all parking garages are and the street noise can be a nuisance, but this is a city, get some ear plugs, or get over it.

Yelp
Nice, modern, clean and spacious. And......the price was really decent mid week. Free parking and free wifi to boot!

Yelp
We always stay at this hotel when we visit Santa Monica. It's had a name change, had a shuttle service then stopped and had a few restaurants come and go that are attached to the hotel. However, we keep coming back because it's clean, appears somewhat recently renovated, the rooms are a good size and are clean and have hard floors (no dirty old carpet), the customer service is good, the price is reasonable, the parking is free and underground and it's about a 30min., walk to the beach. The not so great, they don't have a pool, the gym is small, and the breakfast is pretty much bagels and cereal. On this particular stay, the room we had, you couldn't lock the bathroom door and one of the light bulbs was hanging off on the bathroom mirror. That said, these were minor issues and this is a solid hotel that I'm 99% sure you won't regret staying at. You could book something on Ocean Ave and have an out of this world stay, but you're probably also paying $500-$600 a night. So despite the little issues this place may have, (which in my opinion are very minor) it's a pretty good place and I know we'll stay again.

Yelp
Let me preface this by saying we ended up here on the fly, and the staff at the Gateway Hotel turned our issues and misfortune into a really great trip for my birthday. *you can see my review on the Best Western Surestay in Santa Monica, DO NOT STAY THERE* My mother and I flew from the East Coast to meet my brother who drove in from a Naval Base a few hours away for the week to celebrate my birthday. We booked 2 beds at the Best Western, and not getting into the details (see the review) they have no 2 bed rooms. We were left stranded and, sitting in the other hellhole's lobby, I had to search for where to go. We ended up at The Gateway who had 2 bed rooms for all of our nights. We ended up paying much more than we expected with the first hotel, but you get what you pay for. The service alone was worth it. You guys let us check in early and late, all the things I had scheduled at the first hotel, and assisted us with everything we needed. There is a small gym (no free weights, but it is something) and a simple continental breakfast in the morning. The housekeepers are kind and I felt very safe here, the area is a good area and is walkable to Whole Foods and some restaurants and drug stores. The Best Western did me a favor by doing what they did to me for my birthday.. regardless, The Gateway really turned it around and helped us out when we needed it, and for that I wanted to write this. When I return to Santa Monica I would 100% stay here again, location is great, bus takes you right to the Pier and Promenade. Thank you for helping us out!!

Yelp
Wonderful experience. Room was beautiful and clean. Beds were so comfortable. Staff was friendly and the hotel location was prime. I would definitely stay here again.

Yelp
I needed a place to crash while I was in the area and passed by this hotel. I called and explained my situation and Gateway was able to accommodate me at a great rate. Lower than I expected for sure for a great spot in Santa Monica. Janet at the front desk gave me five star service and in terms of terms of cleanliness, I feel very safe here. Not sure when I'll be back in the area but if I am this is where I'd stay!

Yelp
I wrote a long review & erased it somehow. Stayed 1 night with husband for an event we had to attend. I thought the pricing was fair & nice and clean but the reservation person failed to warn us of restaurant closure & remodel noise. We had to change our room 3 times. First time the room did not have requested bathtub, 2nd time the room was very noisy cause of repairs and street noise. 3rd time was great but we were exhausted from the moving around. Free parking was a plus and got 20% off happily for the issues. Shelia was particularly great & Anna was helpful. Good staff generally.

Yelp
WORST Hotel PARKING and they make you pay for it as a guest!! To top it off, they also don't give any free in room movie.
