New Mexican Restaurant Gato Exotico Opens in Cambridge | Eater Boston

"An over-the-top mash-up of Mexican cuisine and 1990s mall culture, this new spot brings 13-foot-tall Aztec-inspired statues, a lush jungle interior, cheeky tiki mugs, and $5 tacos to CambridgeSide. From the team behind the playful, immersive American Chinese restaurant Wusong Road, chef-owner Jason Doo channels his teen years hanging out at the mall into an atmosphere meant to foster community, and—acknowledging he’s not a Mexican cuisine expert—has Wusong Road’s sous chef and Mexico City native Sergio Enriquez and his mother, “Doña Anna,” creating the menu and running the kitchen. The wide-ranging lineup spans small, street food-inspired bites to large, shareable plates—think $5 tacos, enchiladas, and carne asada—paired with tequila drinks and tropical cocktails from bartender Matt Tetrault. Keeping the experience affordable is the point, with meals estimated at $30 to $35 per person and a proudly middle-class ethos. It’s currently open for dinner, with lunch service slated to start Monday, December 15." - Celina Colby

What a fun little spot! Incredibly decorated, fantastically mixed drinks, but I was absolutely bowled over by the shrimp cocktail. Aside from being a remarkably generous serving, the flavors of the gazpacho-salsa-pico blend it was served in were an absolute revelation. I have grown my own tomatoes and never tasted anything that good.

We went on the night of their ‘soft opening’. Warm welcoming staff at front of house. The food is creative and beautifully presented. We particularly enjoyed their riff on nachos which is Birra patatas fritas. Special mention needs to be made of the first cousin of Pina Colada “Tres Leches Colada”. Our waitress Chrissie could not have been more helpful and friendly. We forgot to take photos of the food. Big mistake! We will be back.

We came here during their soft open. Food and drinks were great. We loved the Jungle Pear cocktail, the tongue tacos, and the steak quesadilla. Our server was very friendly. The decor is amazing. We recommend it for a fun date or night out with friends!

Went for the soft open and the food is already so great. Must haves are the cochinita quesadilla and platano macho (croquetas). The margs taste like two more margs and decor is wild. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

Absolutely transformational right when you step inside from the mall— love the attention to detail in the decor. Food is a bunch of crowd pleasers and the cocktails are creative. We were there on the second night open but they already had a good swing of things. We came with a 2 and 5 year old and they were great at accommodating us! Will be back and really would have no other reason to go to the Cambridge side galleria so I think it’s going to be a nice anchor for the mall!

We were here during the soft open. The food is incredible, the coctel de camarones were to die for, super generous with protein. We put it on top of our quesadilla. The drinks were 10/10 like their other resturaunt wusong road. The patatas fritas were a hair too salty but we still tore it up. We will definitely be back when they open!

Fun place to stop by. Enjoy Margaritas etc. It is still in a soft opening mode but looking forward to the new upcoming full menu.

Love this new spot! The cocktails and food are great and the staff took excellent care of my party. The hand carved wooden tables in the jungle and temple rooms are incredible. Great value and I can’t wait to get back here.

Yelp
The newest restaurant at the Cambridgeside Mall, run by the same team behind Wusong Roadis a much-needed addition, especially since Cheesecake Factory was the only dining option there before. I was excited to check it out during their soft opening. They're operating with a limited menu until the grand opening on December 8th. I ordered the birria tacos and the asado de puerco, both of which were delicious. I also tried their margarita with a Tajín rim. Service was excellent, our server was attentive, and the food came out quickly. The interior has a fun tiki-inspired vibe reminiscent of Wusong Road but with its own unique twist. I'm looking forward to coming back once they fully open. A great spot to stop by for any occasion.

Yelp
I had a chance to try Gato during their soft opening and thought it exceeded expectations in every possible way. The decor leans full-on maximalist (which I love), with super cute tropical wallpaper, greenery hanging from the ceiling, and incredible woodworking with alligators and jaguars carved right into the tables. The cocktails (Sapo Pero, Tijuana Taxi, Tres Leches Colada) were all reasonably priced, balanced, and a good mix of complex/refreshing/boozy. Food wise, everything we tried tasted incredibly fresh and hit the spot. The calamari was complemented well by the cherry peppers, cabbage, and mango it was served with, and the lengua tacos/quesadilla were tender and rich without feeling heavy. For those apprehensive about lengua, I'd encourage trying - I'm always surprised by how tender it is. Overall, it's the rare place that nails atmosphere, drinks, and food equally well. Make no mistake, this place will get busy very soon so get in before it gets too crowded!

Yelp
Amazing new spot with really great vibes, food and drinks. We tried the Birria fries, fish taco and carne asada tacos and everything was delicious and perfectly cooked. The details of the space were beautiful! STUNNING back room for large parties with engraved pieces. Will definitely come back to host a birthday/ large group gathering in the future.

Yelp
The owners of wusong road have done it again!!! Love how they kept their theme of tiki and custom mugs. Came during the soft launch and their drinks are sooo good. Plus all the decorations and ambiance are really unique.
