I've been yearning to check out what the downtown gay bar scene has the offer for quite some time, and finally stepped into the pond last night. With all the choices out there from the Saloon, Gladiators, Blot, 19 Bar, and more, it was hard to determine which to tackle first... but not that hard. I've heard good things about Gay 90's drag show, so that was that.
And good it was. There were a variety of drag queens to appeal to various tastes. Some were medicore at best (in looks and performance) but a few were very, very talented and incredibly entertaining. The MC rocked the house and joked with the crowd. I will admit, like the review before me, there were quite a crowd of heterosexuals around: when the MC asked for the L&G to raise their hands, very few did, and half of them were in our group! However, that's not to say there weren't any in the the house... they were all out tearing up the dance floor!
If the Drag show's not your thing, I'm sure one of the 6 bars and 3 dance rooms will have you partying hard in no time. Upstairs is the recently remodeled Retro Room with plush carpeting and hard wood floor, 7 poles in the back and two on the bar for all your twirling needs, and flat-screen panels around the room showcasing the latest and greatest music videos.
Downstairs, there's a room for hip hop music and another for pop. There's a special bar, "Men's Room," for men only (surprise) past the men's restrooms. My group of gay and straight men entertained themselves with shots and graphics videos while us ladies were left to our imaginations.
Service was pretty good - didn't have to wait too long for drinks. At one point, my friend and I got a drink that turned out pretty terrible, but the bartender quickly replaced it with something very delicious.
For a straight girl, I have got to say, there were some great eye candy in the house. I somehow also talked two of the male dancers there into showing me a few moves on the pole, which was AWESOME! It is NOT easy doing tricks on the pole and I've got the bruises this morning to prove it. Lots of upper arm, core, and leg strength and control to pull of the slick moves. Major props to all the dancers.
Bar time's still 1 or 2 (depending on which of the 6), but the dance party rocks on till 3am on Fridays and Saturdays! Hours of fun for $5 (and $2 coat check) - well worth it. Definitely looking forward to going again. I hear their occasional foam parties are nights not to forget...
