Gazette - Review - London - The Infatuation

"Gazette in Putney are charging £5 for delivery. You should consider it the price of entry to their menu of classic French dishes. From foie gras served with brioche and chutney to roast duck breast and beef tartare, everything is available to order on their website. Deliveries are made daily from 6 to 9pm (or from 12pm on Sundays). We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

My friend and I visited Gazette for lunch and we were met with a wonderful smile from the manager Alina and great service from Ibul our waiter, the food was delicious and service was efficient, so much so, we went back for dinner the same day. Highly recommend

Ibul, our waiter, and Shalo, on the bar, were top on service and making us feel comfortable and at ease during our time. Traditional food with top service and top quality. Can’t compliment the staff enough, they looked after us with professionalism from the very start until the very end and with amazing knowledge on the food.

Had been planning to come visit Gazette Putney for ages! Finally today we made it! We should ve been much earlier! Wonderful French cuisine would definitely recommend And will probably be back very soon 🤩🌈❤️🙏 —- edit 20-Apr-2025 Easter Sunday —- love Gazette, it’s like having lunch in France, but in London! Had the onion soup that is a long time favourite… then the “porcelet” ribs and it was to die for, so delicious, favour rich, soft and wonderful! Been many times, and will certainly return, to have the same wonderful experience, of a French small town cosy restaurant, in Putney! ^_^ Highly recommended!!!

Misleading Offers, Minuscule Portions – and a Truly Ludicrous Response from the Owner ( Walter) Avoid this place if you value transparency, professionalism, or even BASIC courtesy. We visited Gazette on Upper Richmond Road, enticed by an online offer for Chateaubriand at £18 per person – an offer that is still publicly visible on trusted platforms linked to their name. What we received bore no resemblance to that promise. We were served a so-called “Chateaubriand” that was laughably small – allegedly 200g in total (yes, for two people), and quite possibly inclusive of the chips and sauce, judging by what was actually on the plate. To add insult to injury, the steak was overcooked and dry – far from the medium we ordered. We were even charged for a side of spinach that never arrived. They did remove it after we pointed it out, but by that stage, the damage was done. When we raised our concerns, we were met not with an apology, explanation or any semblance of customer care – but with condescension. After a brief, evasive back-and-forth, the owner, Walter Lecocq, sent us a response so dismissive it bordered on insulting. He called our entirely justified complaint “ridiculous” and sarcastically stated that he hoped we weren’t being serious. Rather than acknowledge any of the facts, he chose to dig in and be combative. It’s hard to imagine a more unprofessional way to deal with feedback – especially from someone claiming to run an established restaurant. If a business advertises something publicly, they are accountable for it. That’s not just common sense – it’s basic trading standards. And if they’ve changed their pricing or portion sizes, then they need to update all listings and ensure staff are properly briefed. This entire experience was a masterclass in how not to treat customers. Save your money and your evening – there are plenty of places in London that serve great food and actually respect their patrons. This isn’t one of them.... (though the waiters were decent - Shane about the rude owner !) Update ( post review ) 11/4/25 At no stage were you ever “bullied” to ask for any kind of freebies. Any reader of your response will see how degrading your attitude is. How unprofessional !! ... I have copies of all the emails and I’m more than happy to share these with anyone

The lunch set menu was really good value and excellent quality. Loved the Prawn Cocktail on toast, and the Pan Fried Seabass with a lemon and butter sauce, these were perfect and I’d highly recommend them! Also we enjoyed the Duck Rillettes and Brevette Steak buried under a pile of shallots. All washed down with a pleasant Carafe of enjoyable House red, we’ll definitely be back for more again soon.

This is my new favourite restaurant in Putney. The food is some of the best I’ve had in London. The beef tartare is assembled at the table and is generous with both flavour and quantity. The escargots are tender and covered in copious amounts of garlic butter and parsley, and are presented beautifully. The service is pleasant and attentive, and we left full and satisfied. I can’t wait to come back and try the onion soup and chateaubriand.

My husband took me to Gazette for lunch and it was a pleasant experience. I ate the mussels, which were very tasty and the mariniere sauce was perfectly seasoned. The side mixed salad was a generous size and enough for two. The chips were tasty and also a generous sized portion. My husband chose the venison with mash and thought the mash was good, but the venison didn’t have much taste. The service was attentive and it was good value for money.

Yelp
Great French bistro in the heart of Putney. The steak tartare was delicious and is mixed at the table to your liking. Service was friendly and attentive

Yelp
Went for dinner this evening on a recommendation. Unfortunately I will not be recommending it to anyone else. Slow service, terrible food, wine not great. Chicken liver parfait grainy and watery. The ultimate insult was the bavette steak which came swimming in what looked like dishwater and huge amounts of lukewarm stuff which may once have been shallots. Not once did any of the staff ask if everything was ok with our food. Maybe because they didn't want to hear the answer!

Yelp
Cute little cafe on the main road of Putney that serves affordable and delicious French food. They have an excellent value lunch course at 12 pounds for two courses. Service is very nice. Would recommend.

Yelp
In London I've found myself continually asking "seriously, why don't they know how to soft poach a damn egg" when out to breakfast. I mean, it's really not that bloody hard. Luckily, that thought did not pop into my mind AT ALL at Gazette. Gazette delivered the best poached eggs I've had in London thus far. Heck, I'll even go so far as to say it delivered the best brunch I've had in London, like, ever. The omelette was juicy, the potato / mushroom / pancetta / onion fry was simply to die for, and did I mention that the eggs were poached to perfection?! Service was faultless. Can't wait to go back and try their non/brunch items (chopped steak tartare, in looking at you!)

Yelp
I came back recently and ordered the monday night special - Chateaubriand with chips. It looked small when it came out but it was really filling and I really liked it. It was funny as my friends ordered their steak well done and our waitress really tried to persuade them to change it to at least medium well. I'll definitely come back - curious to see whether the moules frites are any good.

Yelp
I recently enjoyed a lovely brunch at Gazette, I had the full French and it was huge! Everything seemed like it was presented and cooked with great care. Roasted tomatoes, brie on bread, bacon and mushrooms, soft omelette.... Great setting too, interesting quirky décor, just seconds from Putney High Street. Would be interested in trying their evening meals, some great deals on their website!

Yelp
Good food served in a very rustic way. The first time I went I had brunch consisting of eggs and toast and since it was close to midday I ordered chips too but the chips weren't very good- overdone and cold.

Yelp
Beautiful interior and our waiter (seemed to be the manager too) was awesome - knew his stuff and everything he recommended was sublime. We had the tarine tasting platter - mouthwatering and I loved how the bread came in little baskets. Then had the rib eye- wow! And the frites are delicious!! Them desert had the madelines with choc pots. Too good and our red wine was the best. Definitely a favourite and will be taking my parents there in May for anniversary dinner!

Yelp
What a great place! Amazing service and the food is extremely good. Very good value for money and feels very genuinely French.

Yelp
Fab authentic French restaurant in Putney. If you love steak frites, you're in for a treat. The snails are great too, 12 (instead of the normal 6) as a starter. I also had pan fried foie gras on the side with my steak which was absolutely delicious (if a little greedy) Wine can be bought by the glass, carafe or bottle which is perfect when you all want more than one glass of different wines. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Went for dinner here last night. Had the snails to start (I love snails ) portion size was amazing. If your not overly hungry you could get them for a main and then just have a side order. On Mondays they have a steak deal £14.50 for their 'best cut' and a side of chips. It was cooked perfectly and I'm really fussy with steak. Id say if you weren't going for a deal it could end up being quite pricey, by in total and with a bottle of house red it worked out at 30 per person.
