Sarinah is always a fun place to visit, especially on Fridays or weekends. There’s live music, plenty of seating, and lots of cool and pretty photo spots. You’ll find beautiful Indonesian textiles and a wide variety of tasty, satisfying local food — from Monsieur Spoon to exciting street snacks at Jajan Nusantara. Toilets are plenty, and the location is super strategic. Parking can be tricky on weekends, though. Prices match the quality, but there are tons of options and discounts too, so you can always find something that fits your budget.

Sarinah Mall, on M.H. Thamrin is Indonesia’s first modern department store and skyscraper. Inaugurated on August 15, 1966, it was a visionary project initiated by President Soekarno to promote domestic products and support the nation’s economic growth. The mall’s name honors Sarinah, Soekarno’s childhood caregiver, reflecting his deep respect for her influence in his life . Constructed with Japanese war reparation funds, Sarinah introduced Indonesians to modern retail experiences, featuring the country’s first escalators, air-conditioned shopping spaces, and electronic cash registers. Over the decades, Grand Indonesia and the Pakuwon Malls have overtaken Sarinah. However, revitalisation commenced a few years ago to position it as a food & beverage destination.

If you're on the hunt for unique and stylish apparel, this is the place to be! In addition to shopping, Sarinah Mall features a variety of restaurants, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a meal after a day of retail therapy. Sarinah Mall beautifully blends traditional Indonesian charm with a modern atmosphere. I was especially impressed by the supermarket in the basement—it offers a wide variety of Jakarta’s local snacks, instant noodles that are hard to find in Australia, and great gift options like chocolate and Indonesian coffee. The ground floor also has well-curated local crafts and souvenir shops, perfect for travelers. If you're visiting Jakarta, Sarinah is definitely worth a stop!
