The 17 Best Restaurants in Columbia, Home of the University of Missouri | Eater

"There’s no shortage of sushi spots in Columbia, but head for Geisha, where boat-shaped platters of specialty rolls and nigiri fly by tables spewing dry ice smoke. The moody, elegant interior makes for a transportive experience. The restaurant doesn’t skimp on portions either, providing some of the biggest rolls on the market." - Chloe Konrad

Google
Kory always manages to keep his restaurant and menu up to date, exciting and ever changing like the decor. The rolls are creative and meticulously made to order. One of my personal favorites is the Monkey Brain. Don't let the make fool you, it's delicious! The crispy outside and your choice of protein in the middle lightly drizzled with sauces makes it a symphony for the mouth. The presentation of each roll is very well thought out so it's not only a feast for your tastebuds, it's also a feast for your eyes.

Google
What really makes Geisha stand out is the presentation. If you’ve never had sushi arrive on a boat surrounded by dry ice mist this is your moment. It’s dramatic, fun, and totally social media-worthy, but the best part is that the quality of the food matches the show. I’ve tried a variety of their specialty rolls, and every one has been fresh, flavorful, and made with care. The Mizzou Roll is a local favorite for a reason it’s crunchy, creamy, and hits every note. Their tempura is perfectly crisp, and the fish always tastes clean and fresh. Even their miso soup and seaweed salad are a step above the usual. Service has always been great quick, polite, and willing to explain the menu if you’re unsure what to order. Prices are very fair for the quality, and they have good lunch specials during the week.

Google
Beautiful sushi restaurant!! Dim lighting, "stormy cloud ceiling" effects, and nice wood accents throughout. I could imagine this would be a good dinner date spot. The sushi itself is well presented and there are plenty of options! Additionally, they were very accommodating to our friend with a gluten allergy. Fast and friendly service in a cool sushi restaurant with great food, would recommend!

Google
I used to love this place. Loved their monkey brain avocado and spicy tuna, with a miso soup. But unfortunately this time around it wasn't good. The soup was way too salty and the monkey brain had no spicy tuna. The place has really gone downhill. My server was lovely though, but all the same I won't be back. Food quality no Bueno.

Google
Geisha sushi has a pared down menu with a little something for everyone. The prices are reasonable and the portions are generous. We ordered both vegetable and pork gyoza; fried. They were hot and crispy. The dumpling sauce was absolutely amazing and I retained a sauce vessel to dunk sushi in later. The side salad was a refreshing addition. I ordered Caterpillar roll and daughter ordered The Fox roll. The presentation was everything! Both rolls were delicious, if not a little loosely rolled. The restaurant smells clean, but the floors and tables were quite sticky. The bathroom floor was like walking on a glue trap. The staff were pleasant and service was friendly and efficient. Overall, a wonderful little dinner while enjoying First Friday downtown.

Google
Good place to stop for sushi. Flavor and atmosphere are great. We especially liked the complimentary ginger salad. Wife had the Jennifer roll, which was pretty simple but very flavorful. I had the White Tiger which I enjoyed. Both rolls came on a dry ice boat which was tops for presentation. We also got a Korean corn dog, which was filled with a stretchy cheese, and topped with sugar, cinnamon, salt and ketchup. Sounds weird, but it was pretty awesome!

Google
We came in around 5:30pm on a Saturday with a group of 16. I was worried they wouldn’t be able to accommodate us, but within about 5-10 minutes they arranged things for us to sit as one large group. The atmosphere and decor was really cool. A cloud installation that lights up covers part of the ceiling along with umbrellas. Everyone’s sushi look beautiful and fresh! I wasn’t feeling like having sushi that night and got the Tonkatsu Chicken Steak. I also paid a bit extra to add shrimp. It was beautifully plated and so colorful. It was also a larger portion than I expected so I got to take the rest home for another meal. I thought the price was very reasonable for the quality and amount I received. I paid around $18-20. I highly recommend this place!

Google
Food is always delicious here, and staff is great. There’s a complexity of flavors in every dish; my favorites are the mango citrus salad dressings, the tonkatsu barbeque sauce, and the light wasabi Mayo on the rice. We ordered Chicken Tonkatsu, Monkey Brains, Miso and salad, Kissing the Red cocktail, and the Shawn Roll. Everything was delicious. The cold rolls are great to takeout, like the Batman Roll, but some fried rolls loose their crisp with takeout.

Yelp
This place is a hidden Sushi gem of the Midwest. I love how they provide a basic roll and let you choose the toppings. I went with the Drunken fish w/OMG2 and my second roll was a Spider role W/Mizzou topping. Both were phenomenal!!!!

Yelp
The place is really cute. It would be a nice lunch date spot. We went for lunch on a Tuesday. It felt a little understaffed. We got the QP Scallop Hand Roll and the Jumbo Tuna roll with the Yummy topping. The food was good, large portions, but there was a lot mayonnaise. The service was okay. It just felt like a college kid rushing around.

Yelp
New menu is terrible . Used to love coming here but we won't anymore, we have been coming here for a few years monthly for work lunches.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch. Tried the "set b" with salmon roll and shrimp tempura roll. All good, nothing amazing. Service was prompt and friendly. Cool vibe. We'll come back if we get a chance.

Yelp
So we've been here several times now, and the food has always been good quality. The portion sizes seem to be decreasing though, unfortunately. Some of our rolls would previously have 8 pieces, and now they have 6. Service has been great overall. We love getting chef's choice sashimi/sushi sets, and this place seems to just have the sets of specific fish. - Salmon set (4/5): A bit pricey for what you get. But I love salmon, and this has been our go to. It comes with 4 salmon nigiri, 5 salmon sashimi (small pieces), salmon roll (6 pieces). Delicious just wish it was bigger portion for the price. - White tiger (4/5): This is one of my favorite rolls. So much flavor, always delicious. Definitely our go to roll. Love the crunch, the fish on top, the sauces. - Yellowtail roll (4/5): Very tasty, great flavor. Just a small amount of fish in each piece.

Mia D.

Yelp
This used to be the best sushi ever but unfortunately they had a menu change. Makes it almost impossible order the same rolls they previously had. Now you order a base roll and toppings are an upcharge. I attempted to order the same roll but now only half of the roll comes with the toppings. Calamari also changed and reminded me more of fish sticks. Staff and service is still great but the food is just not it anymore

Yelp
We had a large party & were well taken care of. The food was so delicious, presentation diverse & fun! Fluffy clouds with coursing lighting & beautiful parasols cover parts of the ceiling.

Andrew S.

Yelp
Unfortunately with their new menu changes I will not be returning after eating here for 10 years. They've removed their entire sushi menu & replaced it with a "mix and match" option which is both much more expense and makes it impossible to order our favorite rolls. Rolls are bigger but, because their serving plates aren't, if you get a topping only half of the roll is covered (despite paying a hefty up-charge for what is typically just a mixture of sauces). Very disappointing to see a well-established Columbia restaurant start to take a turn for the worst.

Yelp
SO YUMMY! Loved the food and had great service. Came in for lunch and got one of the sushi specials. So worth it!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is delicious! The caterpillar roll from rolls on the grill segment is delicious. Shrimp tempura roll was very good as well. I also love the consistency of their eel sauce, its not super thick like other places which makes it easy to dip and coat your roll. My photo shows the roll options from top of the boat to the other side of the photo. If that makes sense haha. The spicy roll is the white with red and that was good although I am not a fan of the spice. That was my friends choice. Overall great choices and options, reasonable priced.
google avatar

Shanna S.

Yelp
It was busy for a Tuesday evening. Service was good. Was greeted promptly and food came out quickly. We had the tempura shrimp, green monster roll and a shrimp tempura roll. All were really good. The green monster roll was a little difficult yo eat, it fell apart but all of it was very tasty and filling. I'd recommend.

Yelp
Stopped bt for a lunch special. It was tasty but nothing amazing and no Nigerian, which I would have liked. The price was reasonable and service was prompt. We'll come back if we are in town and feeling like sushi.

Yelp
The sushi part of the menu was basically just California rolls with various toppings. Lots on the menu, but very little variety. It also just did not taste great. The service was abysmally slow and the waiter was inattentive, and I am not someone who generally notes slow service, especially if I have only been there once. I wanted an appetizer as part of my meal, so I ordered it when we ordered our entree (which it took more than 25 minutes for someone to come to our table, so we ordered as soon as someone came over.) I have food allergies, so I asked if what I wanted had any sesame in it. She did not appear until 35 minutes later with our food, and then she told me the appetizer did have sesame. Due to how long we had already been there, I did not try to order anything else and left hungry. The restaurant is pretty inside and the boat coming out with smoke is cool, I guess. They also put all the sushi on the boat together, so that was disappointing since the other roll had sesame and I had told them I was allergic.

Yelp
This place is just plain disgusting, would give no stars if possible. Went for lunch and the restaurant was basically empty yet there was still trash and food on the table and booth. The sushi was TERRIBLE. Poorly cut, falling apart, rice was dry/old and also way too much rice. The shrimp tempura roll was missing avocado and eel sauce. The tonkatsu steak was the only thing that was edible. Supermarket sushi tasted better than this. Waste of money. The sushi chef was probably just distracted flirting with the waitress.

Maya ..

Yelp
This restaurant is a perfect date night restaurant. You are also welcome to come as you are, the staff here are friendly and welcoming. During the holiday season though the staff was short staffed, the service was still consistent. The bathrooms are also, clean.

Yelp
This restaurant is located on Broadway and has fantastic sushi. The decor is very modern with Asian influence, the menu is simple but well prepared and fresh.

Yelp
While on a business trip, I stayed at the tiger hotel. The Geisha Sushi Bar is right around the corner from the hotel. This place is super chill, and the staff is very kind, friendly, and helpful. The soju, sushi, and dumplings are phenomenal. It wasn't too busy and you don't need a reservation. Great vibes.
google avatar

Carmen S.

Yelp
Food was pretty good. The rolls were just a little too big for me. I had to eat them in two bites, but the presentation of them was phenomenal. Love the dry ice boat and had to snag a picture of it. Overall nice atmosphere, good service, good food.
google avatar

Kathryn S.

Yelp
Fresh fish and excellent tasting sushi. There's a separate bowl to top the sushi chefs. They got twice the tip as my servers. The white tiger roll with spicy salmon was to die for. Freshest tuna and excellent smoked unagi nigiri. I will be back. Maybe next time have more sake, only hot sake here?
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome little sushi spot that's open until 9 pm in downtown Columbia. Great prices too. I've had sushi in many states and this place is on point! Their seaweed salad and miso soup are great. Try the Mizzou Roll. Customer service was great.

Yelp
I quite enjoyed Geisha! A classic hole in the wall, this place had cute decorations and a very good "Sushi Bar" feel. The sushi was delicious, no complaints there. Drinks were fairly priced and the dessert that my friend ordered was very appealing to the eye. I imagine that this was just a one-off thing, but it seemed as though they might have been training a new server or two. Our table was pretty wet when we sat down and we had to ask to have it wipes or even for a napkin. We went through like three different servers who didn't really know the answers to some of our questions, so overall that was just a little strange. But it didn't ruin the experience. I recommend for the students in COMO!

Yelp
As someone who dines out often and seeks for the best sushi in the area of travel, I confidently write this review as a subject matter expert! Geisha Sushi was across the street from Tiger Hotel and knowingly we want a few cocktails this walking distance restaurant was perfect! We arrived to this quaint place at 8pm on a Tuesday. We were immediately greeted and told to sit wherever we wanted. Their booths are extremely spacious and there was only two of us. We chose one and cuddled to the corner ready to review the selection. We had a selection....for sure! Let's start with drinks, wow! A wonderful array of beers from domestic to locals. My husband chose the Honey Wheat IPA beer and said it was delicious! I chose the German Riesling and much to my surprise, it was light, crisp and a hint of sweet. What was the best part of the drink menu? The prices! $3.50 for the beer and $5 for the wine?! That's a steal compared to the national average! Next time I'll grab the bottle! Moving to the food, we came to conquer the sushi menu. We ordered the White Tiger roll 1st and it was beyond good! The presentation on the dry ice boat was unique and a show stopper! We also ordered the salmon sashimi set and the fish was extremely fresh! Great portions and perfect for 2 hungry people! Lauren was our server and she was wonderful! She spent time getting to know us, helped my husband with his beer selection and was very attentive! She was down the earth, sweet disposition and wonderful to get to know! They had great music playing! I wish they would have stayed open after 9pm! They closed and we left wanting more! I would recommend extending their hours for those that are late dining. We would have returned the 2nd night but our prior commitments only allowed us to eat at 8:30pm and we didn't want to rush in order to close at 9. Thank you for a delicious dinner and dining experience!

Yelp
So the food here is... INCREDIBLE. What we got to try of it. We were here for an hour and fifteen minutes and only received most of our drinks and ONE of the two appetizers we ordered. We put our full order in almost immediately when we arrived. They were very busy, and I understand that, but the server chose to take it out on her tables. She forgot to get our Diet Coke so we tried reminding her for it after nearly an hour had past and she turned around and borderline snapped at us saying "I'm really busy right now". No apologies or anything. We had to ask for plates, for napkins, for more water. The next time she came by she only said "your sushi will be out soon", but at that point we hadn't received our second appetizer, our salads, or had the opportunity to order more drinks. We mentioned it to her and she snapped at us, remarking again how busy she was. We finally asked for her to get the manager and she snapped back that there was no manager in. After that she only refilled our water. It almost felt like she was punishing us after that and although there was plenty of time for our food to have come out, it never did. After nearly an hour and a half, we gave up. I really enjoyed the ambiance, the one appetizer we had was DELICIOUS (monkey brain). Because of that, I'm excited to try this place again in the future, but I won't stay if it's the waitress we had tonight. Here's to hopefully a better experience next time.

Yelp
Amazing!!! Food was great and the presentation was unmatched- best sushi place and atmosphere in como! Fast service! Got our food in 10 minute:) friendly staff
google avatar

Derek W.

Yelp
Expensive, but the quality is great. I like to go here if I want to treat myself to great-for-the-Midwest sushi and "monkey brains."
google avatar

Kent R.

Yelp
Delicious food with kind and courteous staff. One of our fav locations in Columbia. Everything was so good.

Karen R.

Yelp
Can't remember what I got because it's been too long, but the food and service were excellent and I look forward to sampling more of their menu soon.

Grace E.

Yelp
Amazing food, amazing vibes, and quick service. Definitely get the monkey brains with avocado:)

Sydney C.

Yelp
Gyoza and the sauce it came with were very good! Quick service, fun ambiance, loved the boat the sushi was served on.

Fatin A.

Yelp
Food was okay. I wanted the udon but they no longer serve any noodles/ramyun. Service was excellent. The waiter gave me cold water and I asked for hot water which she nicely gave to me.
google avatar

Whitney S.

Yelp
This place had me when I saw a photo of the Monkey Brain which I ordered when I was there and it was as good as the picture showed. I had it made with the fried avocado and filled with spicy tuna (you had the option to get mushroom instead or a mix but I went with all avocado). There wasn't that much of a selection of nigiri which was a little disappointing. The green tea I ordered was lukewarm and cost $3.50...
google avatar

Bianca H.

Yelp
Warning anyone who is considering ordering- This place is actually closed for lunch, contrary to what the business hours say. I placed an order over Yelp/grubhub and when I went to pick it up, the restaurant was closed. It was a hassle getting in touch with grubhub about a refund. I'll also have to wait up to 3 days to get my refund.
google avatar

Jazmine O.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised when I got takeout from this restaurant today. Given COVID, I called in my order for pickup. They took my order quickly and it was ready when I arrived about 15 minutes or less later. I ordered the crazy roll (delicious and definitely my fave, but spicy!), California roll, and crunch roll as well as a side salad. All rolls we're huge and all 3 were so delicious! They made sure to include soy sauce, ginger, and wasabi with the order. The pickup was quick and easy. About half the tables were full, about consistent with covid. There were some that weren't clean when I walked in but I'm not sure of the situation. I will definitely recommend this place to friends and will be back next time I'm in town!
google avatar

Arlene C.

Yelp
First off, Geisha Sushi and Ramen got me fucked up. How are you gonna rebrand yourself as a sushi AND ramen restaurant but not have a single ramen on your menu. Second of all, where do you get your balls asking me to move to a different table IN THE MIDDLE OF MY MEAL?!? Yes, I was asked to move to a different table to accommodate a group of 7 WHITE COLLEGE STUDENTS (2 of which did not have on masks when they entered the restaurant) when there were 3 open tables directly in front of me. Had I allowed them to move me, social distancing would've been impossible. 0/5 stars would not recommend.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
I wanted sushi for my birthday weekend and I'm glad that I came here at Colombia. Hayden was an amazing waiter and so attentive! Definitely come here to eat if you're in town.

Stephanie R.

Yelp
I was visiting Columbia and met with a friend of mine at Geisha just before Christmas. I was greeted by the hostess and told to have a seat in the front. It took 10-15 minutes for a server to greet me and ask for my drink order while I waited for my friend. Within this span of time, another party left their table because I'm assuming they were not being helped promptly. My friend and I ordered our sushi as well as the vegetable gyoza to start. My friend has dietary restrictions against eating pork and when the gyoza arrived at our table, it appeared to have pork inside. After asking the table next to us whether they too thought the gyoza looked to contain pork, we brought it up to the server and she assured us in an unfriendly, unconvincing way that the gyoza did not have pork in it. The service was probably the poorest service I've had in quite a while, and I was bummed to spend my visit in Columbia this way. The sushi was pretty good, but it was difficult to enjoy the meal with the unwelcoming atmosphere. There are definitely better sushi options in Como.
google avatar

LaShawnda K.

Yelp
So good! They have awesome vegan and vegetarian options which I absolutely love. They get food done in a timely manner as well whether you get it delivered or pick up, they're my go to spot for sushi!
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Came here with my daughter (8) for dinner the other night. We got a bowl of ramen and a couple rolls. It was awesome. Everything tasted great. Ramen was stellar. We will definitely be back for another dad/daughter date night
google avatar

Richard R.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor, stop at Giesha even when it's cold, the miso soup will warm you up, even with the $2 ice cold beers. I ordered the spicy salmon Giesha with a crunch roll, perfect match, just hit the spot even when it was 18 degrees out side. The server was "da bomb", extremely attentave and as for the food, I should have taken the picture at the beginning, but couldn't wait....pic of my last bites. I am voting Giesha as the best sushi in Columbia, MO. Do your friends a favor and invite them to go with you!!! Oh, forgot to mention, you can get your favorite Giesha sushi delivered by MrDelivery...check them out online.....but you will miss a big part of the experiance, the environment and the dry ice rolls. BTW: Ask for Brandon as your server.
google avatar

Hayden S.

Yelp
I had a really disappointing experience at geisha! My friend and I went for dinner and the restaurant claims our ticket didn't print but we were seated and had placed an order and waited for over an hour 15 before the head chef came and told us that they just found out ticket and they were now out of rice. I am extremely upset and most likely will not return or recommend to anyone.
google avatar

Shayna A.

Yelp
Seriously good sushi. Surprising for downtown middle of not-by-an-ocean, but true. The servers were great, the sushi was real, real good and we left feeling fat 'n sassy. Being downtown is a plus, the hours are a little weird, but worth the wait.

Chad C.

Yelp
Had lunch here for the first time ... I tried the all-you-can eat lunch special in order to try as many different rolls. I somehow ate four! All of them were savory, fresh, and well worth the $20 total spent. The place is small, but casual and the service was excellent. Highly recommend for lunch.
google avatar

Maya P.

Yelp
Ok I've been here numerous times and typically the food is pretty good but it's not my favorite sushi in town. I did find out that on Tuesdays and Thursday's they have $3 shrimp tempura rolls though!! Which is a great price for a great roll. Not only that but the deal includes miso soup or a salad also. Will definitely be coming back for more of these as they were delicious.
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
Great presentation but food & atmosphere not as good as it looks. Service very slow and forgetful. My husband asked for unsweetened ice tea. They didn't have it!!! Food was not very good. I do not recommend it.
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
Been to Geisha several times, really like the sushi and they have great drink specials. This is definitely a smaller restaurant and there's no place to sit if you are waiting. Typically we can get a seat in 30 minutes or less. Love the sushi boats they have with the dry ice. The Philadelphia II roll is my favorite here. The Kpop music videos on the tv are a fun touch! They have a really awesome drink that comes in a pineapple, forgot the name but it's delicious and really strong, definitely recommend!
google avatar

Kaitlyn W.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place. My friend and I made it a weekly tradition to come here and every time the customer service is excellent. Favorite sushi spot in como
google avatar

Megan P.

Yelp
BEST SUSHI IN COMO!!! My friends and I love this place they have great lunch specials (-: They also have cute decorations, the large booths are very comfortable and spacious!

Carl H.

Yelp
Great Sushi Rolls and the Eel plate was outstanding. Kids loved it. Wife loved it. Happy wife - happy life. Topped off with a Sake Bomb which I never had before. Can only recommend.

Emily R.

Yelp
I received the worst service I've ever experienced. My server was a complete and utter jerk. There seemed to be only two servers of the night and she was the one working the front of the restaurant closest to the windows.
