The 13 Best Gelato Spots In Rome 2024

"If Piazza Navona is on your list of things to see in Rome, and it should be, plan to come to Gelateria del Teatro after. It’s just a four-minute walk away, and serves many unique flavors you won’t find elsewhere, like pineapple and mint, or ricotta, fig, and almond. Fill a cup with the creamy white chocolate and basil, followed by the rich, dark chocolate that’s spiked with fruity Nero d'Avola wine. Granita is also an option if you’re craving Italy’s version of a snow cone, and it’s especially refreshing during the summer months. " - annie replogle, gillian mcguire

11 Best Gelato Shops in Rome

"Maybe it’s the piles of lemons, apples, oranges, and pears in the window; the drawers overflowing with almonds, pistachios, and hazelnuts; or the trays of chocolate on the countertop: Gelateria del Teatro is quite obviously the real deal. Everything here is handmade and utterly delicious, from the crunchy olive oil cones to the tray of Peruvian dark chocolates truffles in the window. But the main event is the gelato. The menu is seasonal; summer is best for fruit-based sorbets like orange-kiwi or rosemary-lemon." - Maresa Manara

Google
Our favorite gelato place during our visit to Rome! The white chocolate basil ice cream is divine. You must try it! Went back to this spot several times it was that good.

Laura

Google
Fabulous flavors, all local organic ingredients. For example, all different levels from milk to dark dark cioccolato! This location also has little cannolis and other cookies. Got the 3 scooper for 5€, Rosemary lemon, pistachio, hazelnut. June 2025 Usually a line but if you go at the right time it won’t be too long. Goes by fairly quickly

Google
Highly recommended! Not only is the gelato amazing, but the staff is also very friendly. You should definitely take their recommendations — the combination of peach and chocolate was incredible!

Google
Again, if I only had to have gelato from three places in Rome for the rest of my life this place is also on that short list. The flavours were amazing and none of those ultra bright fakes here. The spoon colour use for categorising ingredients- milk+egg/milk/no milk no egg was great, a good guide for all you allergy-vores out there. Staff cheerful and chatty too and made a few great flavour combo suggestions.

Google
Great gelato! Lots of flavor choices, and great service. One of the best in Rome so far!

Google
Horrible and quick meltdown Gelato I've ever eaten. Overrated and its so watery. I came sharp when the shop was opened and it was horrible. Not recommended.

Google
Gelateria del Teatro was one of my favorite gelato stops in Rome. They offer such interesting and unique flavors — I tried the rosemary and lemon, and it was sooo refreshing and unexpectedly delicious! A perfect balance of citrusy brightness and herbal notes — unlike any gelato I’ve had before. I also loved that they use natural ingredients and no artificial colors — you can really taste the quality. The place has a lovely vibe, the prices are reasonable, and the staff was friendly and helpful with suggestions. Definitely a must-visit if you’re in Rome and looking to try something beyond the usual gelato flavors!

Google
I can't express how much I loved the gelatos I tried in Gelateria del Teatro. I just can't find the right words, because saying it was the best gelato in the entire town, country, planet or galaxy doesn't explain it all. First of all I need to say that I got 2 flavours (3.5 euros) on the first visit - almond and hazelnut. I was astonished by the taste and the amount of the nuts in the gelato. It was heavenly gentle, full of delicious nut flavour! I must confess that almond is my favourite nut, and the creator of this gelato did a great job in delivering the best almond flavour and texture I ever encountered in any similar dessert. Hazelnut was great, too. So the next day I did everything possible to reach this place again and order the same gelato, except for this time I took the 3 flavoured cone (5 euros) and added pistachio to almond and hazelnut. People, this nut trio was a killing combination. Almond is still my favourite one, but enriched with other nut flavours this was the best experience I had in Rome in 6 days. The staff is great at their job! The only thing that makes me sad is the fact that I couldn't come back once more and try other flavours. I think this place is wonderful and I hope it will stay open for many-many years, making people happy!

Yelp
Very nutty, real pistachio flavor and their pure chocolate was my son's favorite! Easy location, went right after dinner next door at the Cucina del Teatro.

Yelp
The lemon gelato from here is sooo sour, so if you enjoy sour you will love this! The raspberry was good and so was the almond one! I wouldn't say best I've ever had, but it hit the spot when we wanted some.

Yelp
Gelato a Roma! Gelato in Rome! So many to choose, and here I am based on a high recommendation with great results! With a variety of flavors that match their description, I went with a double chocolate red wine flavor paired with a eggnog cream flavor. Located in a small and easy to pass by, be on the lookout for this shop!

Yelp
A very popular spot- meaning it can be somewhat busy, but the line usually goes pretty fast. Honestly, this is not the best gelato you can find in Rome, but it is still very very good, and where it really shines is the variety of flavors. Some, like almond (mandorla), you would have trouble finding at other shops. They also have specialty flavors that they switch out every few days- if you're a fan of floral flavors, their rose and raspberry is delicious. A must stop for those who like adventurous flavor combinations!

Yelp
Deliciousness in a cup. Pure flavors and wonderful creaminess. Large selection of cream and fruit based gelato flavors. They let you sample as well.

Pinky R.

Yelp
Excellent gelato. The service was great. I loved the melon and fig flavors. The raspberry and prickly pear were also tasty. They offered a couple of different types of cones. The heard us speaking English and started speaking to us in English. I look forward to coming back.

Rodrigo L.

Yelp
This gelato was by far the best that we tried in all of Rome. My wife loved the rose petals and raspberry flavour and I was enthralled with the dulce de leche. We loved it so much that we went back a second time. The service was exceptional, both times the servers were very kind and welcoming. What's even more cool is that, as the name suggests, you can watch them mix the ice cream on site through one of their windows. Tamara and I highly recommend this place. Not to be missed!

Mariam A.

Yelp
So worth the line wait. I wanted to finish my cone and stand right back in line again to try more flavors.

Felicia M.

Yelp
Our VERY favorite gelato while traveling 3 weeks throughout Italy! Opt for their seasonal specials. My son LOVED the creamy berry & sage and I adored the fresh melon. We went 2xs after discovering this delight.
google avatar

Andrew N.

Yelp
The nut flavors here are special. Pistachio, hazelnut, almond. Spectacular cannot find in the states
google avatar

Yelp
This place has the widest selection of flavors including 6 with chocolate. Very friendly staff and mouth watering flavors including truffle chocolate, ginger and pumpkin/chocolate.

Yelp
You should turn around and head to Frigidarium immediately where their gelato is 1000x better. Got the pistachio and chestnut flavors here and the first tasted too chalky but still better than the chestnut, which tasted absolutely artificial and overly sweet. Had to throw it out immediately and walk over to the nearby Frigidarium to have gelato there to cleanse my palette.
google avatar

Teena S.

Yelp
Wow. This is the best gelateria in Rome! The milk chocolate, strawberry sorbet, hazelnut, mint chocolate chip, pistachio, and coconut were delicious. We tried a few other gelato place and this is definitely the best!

Yelp
Came here right before midnight and wanted to quench my thirst with something fruity so I elected for the pineapple mint and cactus pear. Pineapple mint was good. Cactus pear just tasted sweet. I couldn't really identify the flavor. It's a little pricier than Giolitti but I don't think it's necessarily better. The flavors are a little more unique but if I had time for just one Gelateria, it would go to Giolitti.

Yelp
Located at Via dei Coronari 65, not far from the river, Gelateria del Teatro is considered to be one of Rome's best places for Ice Cream by some, a reliance on fresh Ingredients yielding some forty flavors daily with seasonal specials changing frequently. Offering guests the opportunity to watch Gelato being made through a large window, both this location and one at Lungotevere dei Vallati open from 11h30 until 24h00, guests are unfortunately denied a taste before making purchases, which thus encourages a reliance on past favorites. Also selling various Chocolates and Candies, questionably made on-site, three scoops were added to the top of a yeasty Cone for a bit more than Rome's average, the arrangement not particularly eye-catching but Base luscious and creamy with good flavors of Pine Nut and Pistachio, though less from Torrone.

Yelp
The best icecream in town, Highly recommended. We were walking by this small neighborhood street and run into this small joint.... Best place to chill.

Yelp
Awesome shop with wonderful gelato. Tucked away in an alley, with a nice shower and other stories

Yelp
Probably the best gelato we had throughout Italy during our two week trip. This little unassuming ice cream shop is nestled on a corner of one of the most charming streets in Rome. The ingredients are fresh and organic and the flavors denoted as dairy free, gluten free etc. They have an extraordinary selection of flavors that will not disappoint. When entering, you grab an old fashioned ticket like the kind you find in a deli way back when. The gentleman behind the counter was incredibly gracious. I had ricotta, almond and fig gelato which was unusual and simply delicious. The dark chocolate was great as it was made with red wine and was dairy free. You will not be disappointed. Worth the venture out of the more touristy areas and amidst a street of local shops and artisans. Yum!!!
google avatar

Eric W.

Yelp
Not really impressed. We had searched online and this place came highly recommended. Service was good but the flavor choices were somewhat ordinary and, after tasting, quite bland. The serving size and quality just wasn't there for the price. Definitely found better in Rome.
google avatar

Anat S.

Yelp
All natural and you can taste the quality. Good but had better. Still happy I tried it. Some different flavors like honey and rosemary
google avatar

Yelp
Rome is a town in which gelato can literally be found on every block. You'll never get to experience even a fraction of these, so it's Yelp to the rescue! We had heard that Gelateria del Teatro was the best, so we put it to the test! Why not a 5? Because the Frutti di Bosco flavor at L'Orso Bianco was the best flavor I tasted in Rome and nothing else can compare!!! They certainly offer the most inventive flavors in all of Rome, separating itself from the thousands of gelaterias in the city with clever concoctions. The white chocolate and basil is very good, but the lavender and white peach is where it's at!!! The proof of extraordinary freshness is not merely in the taste. You can actually watch the gelato being made from scratch in the front window, or on live video feed in the dining room. The store is very bright and clean and features a beautiful ceiling with wooden beams. Upon entry, don't forget to take a ticket from the machine at the door or you'll be passed over!
google avatar

Valerie T.

Yelp
DELICIOSO!!!! Freindly pleasant service and yummy gelato. They have many flavors and desserts. Large area to sit. Very nice indeed.
google avatar

Juan G.

Yelp
Take your ticket before walking in! It gets busy and they call out those numbers. It'll be back of the line for you if you don't have a ticket. Sherbet all on the right side and Milk ice creams on the left, you choose. Both our outstanding in terms of texture and natural flavors. This is my second best Gelateria in Roma (second best because they only have a hand full of flavor choose from in the milk side). Nice sitting area in the back of the shop or nice neighborhood to take-out and pick a spot to sit. Love it!
google avatar

Brandon R.

Yelp
This was our favorite gelato This was the best gelato we had in Rome. It came by way of a recommendation from a friend who spent a few trips in the city. Why? 1) amazing selection of flavors. Not just what you'd expect. We were there for Halloween and had pumpkin chocolate ice cream. They also had ricotta cheese and fig! 2) the gelato was smooth and authentic 3) the cone tasted great. It was light and delicious. Make sure u try it instead of the cup 4) they're very organized. Take a number at the door. They respect the deli counter number system. As an American traveler I'm annoyed by Europeans cutting in front of you because you're a foreigner. They really respect the queue. Follow us on Instagram @sebastianfashionicon

Yelp
If you can't already tell from reading my reviews, I LOVE places that have interesting flavor combos. And Gelateria del Teatro is one of the best! They have so many choices, and a lot of them are unique ones you won't find anywhere else. We tried the sage raspberry, rosemary honey and lemon, and the lavender peach. ALL OF THEM WERE WONDERFUL! But of course, my favorite was the lavender peach because I am partial to anything lavender. None of them were super overpowering, which I'm always afraid of with herby flavors like rosemary and lavender. They were perfectly subtle, and actually combined well with each other! This is a MUST STOP in Rome! I'll be dreaming of these flavors back in New York

Yelp
TAKE A GODDAMN NUMBER AND WAIT!! Once they call your number you can order. Incredible gelato place. This place was a 30 second walk from our hotel so we stopped by nonstop, towards the end of our trip they recognized us. Should have just opened an account. A small cup or cone is 3 euros and can hold two flavors. Please stop sampling so much and order because the line is long. Below is my quick summary of flavors we tried and remember. Flavors we tried, Pineapple Mint - must try, true pineapple flavor but made lighter with the mint Garden Sage and Raspberry - good, unique. Bits of raspberry stuck in and sage flavor and scent is incorporated into cream of the ice cream. Lavender and white peach - good, loved the bits of peach. Pistachio - very good, nutty & creamy. Café (coffee) - must try, had this multiple times. Also think it has a bit of caffeine, had this one night, couldn't sleep. Stracciatella/witih cacao nibs - must try, this was two different flavors, one with chocolate chip and the other with cacao nibs. I preferred cacao nibs. Milk Chocolate - simple, straight forward, good. Mint Chocolate - must try and my fave. Mint was strong and chocolate was not only chocolate but cacao nibs which gave a much more satisfactory crunch. Peach - Very peachy had real chunks of peach, yummy. Melon - True to flavor, I'm not a fan of melon flavors but husband chowed down Lemon Granita - soo refreshing and good. Slightly tang, slight sweet. Lemon Ginger Granita - Just like above but with a subtly added heat of ginger. Felt detoxifying lol. Overall, would highly recommend the freshness and quality of ingredients really shines through in each flavor and you can also see them make the gelato through the window from the street.

Yelp
The cannolis was a little sweet, but it was very good. My favorite is the pistachio. Almond cannoli is my second go to .
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
I came here on a weekend adventure with my friend. Be wary, plastic card holders - this place only accepts cash. My friend started with a cone of pistachio and mint chocolate. I had the raspberry-sage with a bit of strawberry on top. We both loved the more exotic flavors (pistachio and raspberry-sage). My friend decided this was too good and had to go for round two which included milk chocolate and a nutty flavor. Pistachio still won. If you have a hard time figuring out what to order, just look for the vat with the least amount of gelato in it. That's probably the winner! It was a bit hard finding this place -- look for that ice cream cone sitting outside. I will give the place credit for having milk vs. vegan options color-coded. Overall, I would definitely come back here. With cash. (That ATM was a bit circuitous to find.)
google avatar

Tyrel M.

Yelp
Best cannoli and gelato place I have ever had during my stay in Italy! While walking in italy we came across this place for an ice cream and gelato shop and I will tell you that it was the best place I have ever had. If I ever come back to Italy I will be back to this place as soon as I get there!
google avatar

Joanna M.

Yelp
Come si dice 'HOLY MOLY' in italiano? Sacro moly? This is the gelato that you came to Italy for. What, you came for the art and culture? This is a masterpiece right here. Perfect for hot Roman days and sultry nights, del Teatro has some amazing gelato that has garnered a lot of praise. I don't quite remember where I read about it, but it was on my radar and my husband and I saved room for dessert on our first night in Rome and came here just before closing. My eyes bulged just looking at the splash of colors in the different flavors. As usual, I impulsively chose two flavors within two seconds. I always trust my ice cream intuition. Raspberry and sage and a creamy flavor with chunks of cherries were my inspiration. My husband deliberates more methodically, but selected equally as delicious pistachio and chocolate-y something. This is the purest and tastiest example of La Dolce Vita. Fellini would be proud.
google avatar

Dee K.

Yelp
Loved the spicy chocolate gelato at this cute little Gelateria. Also enjoyed the pistachio from Siciliano. My GF said this is the best in Rome. I'm not sure. I feel like we should be scientific and try them all. In the meantime, my junk food stomach is full.
google avatar

Angelica C.

Yelp
I couldn't decide what to order, so I got 2. Yes, two all for me. The mango and mint are my favorites. All ingredients are fresh. I even saw them squeezing lemon and honey into the batch. There are tons of gelato places all over Italy, but I do recommend this place.
google avatar

Erick T.

Yelp
I liked this place because it featured some more fun and unusual gelato flavors, like lavender white peach, sage & raspberries, and orange chocolate (with actual orange rinds). However, the gelato itself was slightly more icy (and less creamy) compared to Venchi (our all-time favorite). This place also had a little bit of a Soup Nazi feel to it (a la Seinfeld). My wife and I took a few moments to choose between all the exotic flavors, and the man behind the counter was getting visibly impatient. There was no line, and no one behind us, by the way.
google avatar

Mary Anne P.

Yelp
I just got back from Rome and cannot stop thinking about this place! This was by far my most favorite place for gelato. It was so good I had to go back the following day. The gelato was made fresh and you can watch them make it from the window. My favorite was the lemon cheesecake and pistachio (didn't have a picture of it) This was THE best gelato I've ever had. I miss it so much!
google avatar

Wendy L.

Yelp
Without some research it is hard to differentiate a good gelato place in Itlay especially when there is always one round the corner. But after trying so many around Rome I can say Gelateria Del Teatro was one of my favourites serving some of the creamiest and smoothest gelato I've had. The young male staff there was a bit cold and grumpy looking. it looked like we disturbed him half way watching some video on his phone which when we went to sit down to eat, he resumed playing it. He still looked bored out his mind though. However that didn't affect how much we ordered our dessert so I am not going include it in my star rating. Ren ordered the pure chocolate and it was the richest chocolate ice cream I have ever tasted. It so thick, silky and smooth with a shine that almost made it look like a solid ball. But that was only the result of how densely packed it was, with no air gaps but just pure cream. I ordered a mix of Sicilian almond and pistachio gelato which were both excellent. A lot of the previous gelato I've had in Rome had small ice particles in them but this was incredibly smooth throughout. No interruptions to the creaminess or their nutty rich flavours. Curious about their green pistachio tiramisu, I ordered it for novelty and didn't expect much from it. But it was shockingly wowing, so airy and light it was almost like eating condensed air. The addition of pistachio gave it a rounded nutty sweetness to it. Highly recommend.

Yelp
While in Rome it's more than easy to get your fill of gelato, even if it's just in one neighborhood. The question of preference comes down to the individual and their taste. Given what I've experienced, Gelateria del Teatro features some of the best gelato in all of Rome. The gelato shop is located in a pedestrian only side street not far from Piazza Navona. We discovered it while on the way to the Pantheon. They offer a wide variety of both classic and inventive gelato flavors. The gelateria also makes other sweets like bite sized cannoli and truffles. All of the sweets are made with the freshest ingredients. The proprietor of the store focuses on in season produce to make the flavors. On our visit, I chose a scoop of sicilian wine cream and a scoop of pumpkin, amaretti, and chocolate. The two scoops came in a cone for a total price tag of €3. My wife also chose the wine cream and added chocolate orange. I am amazed at the amount of flavor Gelateria del Teatro is able to pull off with their gelato. The pumpkin gelato tastes exactly like real pumpkin. Each bite feels like the gelato was made fresh just for you. I highly recommend this gelateria for anyone traveling in Rome. It's not only some of the best in the city, but anywhere in my experience.
google avatar

Anna K.

Yelp
Best Gelateria that we found in Rome. This is the place to go if you want to try interesting and unusual flavors. They also opened a restaurant right next to it so you can combine dinner and desert (we did so on our second night when we came back for gelato and unexpectedly stayed for the dinner and enjoyed it very much).
google avatar

Victoria L.

Yelp
Found this place since we went to lunch nearby and I'm glad to have tried it! Apparently it's famous for its gelato and their unique flavors. I'll admit I was a little off put by the cost since it was more than normal but I suppose I have a little understanding for the economics of being a more tourist heavy location. But still - the price keeps me from coming back too much, because it adds up when you're getting gelato as much as I do. I cannot for the life of me remember the other flavor I got but I tried the Sicilian winecream and I thought that was a very solid flavor. Unique in that I've never seen it anywhere else. It was very wine but also in a subtle way - I definitely plan to come back at least once before I leave Rome to try it again.

Yelp
Yes, I purposely saved this five star review for a simple geleteria as my last from my trip. Five stars for gelato; why? Because while eating it, I got it. The reason it and all the other food is so good; owners, cooks, chefs, give a SHIT! Milk from free ranged cattle, fresh picked, in season fruits, nuts, herbs used not a marketing tool but because it's the right thing to do. The result, a scoop of lemon gelato whose aroma is exactly like the sun ripened skin of a fragrant lemon and whose flavor is bright, citrusy and tart like the fruit itself. Fagiola gelato that captures the sweet burst of berry flavor finishing with tartness and green bitterness of the fresh fruit. A mango gelato with all the perfume of a fresh sliced fruit with a natural, cloying sweetness ending with a long floral finish of ripe mango. Milk based gelato, phenomenal. You can taste the terrior in the base. Richness of milk with a grassy somewhat tart finish. The base just picks up the flavor of vanilla, pistachio, hazelnuts, honey, rosemary, chocolate, etc. Quaint location. Modern interior. Friendly staff who was proudly pushing little taste of this or that. Very little English spoken. Go knowing your basic flavors in Italian. Very busy. Inexpensive around €2,50 for two scoops. I had it wrong, It's not about living la dolce vita but PASSIONATELY LIVING. Ciao Grazie!

Yelp
I wasn't even checking recommendations for Yelpers and found this place. WOW! Great gelato. We grab gelato at least once a day and this was a great find as we were leaving the Christmas Square. You are able to watch them make it from the display window. Also, other nice treats inside. There is a pizza restaurant in the rear. We haven't tried yet, but we have few more days in Rome. Let me know your comments about the gelato.

Yelp
one of the only places around to get white chocolate gelato! my wife loves white chocolate and so this was the ONLY gelato place during our entire 10 days in italy that we visited TWICE! i wouldn't say it's the best we had, but it's definitely worth going to. i tried a pistachio canoli as well which was delicious. service was excellent and they take credit cards

Yelp
My favorite gelato during vacation. So delicious I had to go twice. I had a tough time deciding between all of the flavors. Their fruity ones are so refreshing in the heat. I loved the pineapple/mint and lavender/white peach!!!! A must-try when you're in Rome!
google avatar

Kim-Anh L.

Yelp
Delicious home-made gelato made from fresh ingredients you can see in the window! Teatro was recommended to by a couple of my Italian friends - so glad we managed to stop by a couple of scoops! Gelateria del Teatro cater for vegans and vegetarians! When you go in make sure you collect a ticket from the machine at the entrance - it gets very busy so you want to ensure you're next in line! There's are a few quirky tables outside - perfect for basking in the sunshine (also seating inside). I tried the [alphonso] mango gelato - beautiful, soft texture and not too sweet. Delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Had a medium cup of stracciatella and tiramisu, and both were great, creamy, and rich, but service was so hostile and their bathroom was awful. Bad customer service gives visitors a bad image of your business, people!

Yelp
Flavorless gelato Not as smooth as it is supposed to be After trying several amazing gelato places in Rome, I just don't know understand how this one gets such high rating here on yelp! Plus.. prices are higher than the norm, which makes it worse.. Not recommended

Yelp
The cinnamon tasted like oatmeal cookie batter but the best batter ever. The milk chocolate was sooo chocolately, but not bitter. It was perfect. Still dreaming about this place....

Ramy S.

Yelp
Everything was delicious. Tried four different flavors. The four chocolate seemed to be a popular choice

Kevin S.

Yelp
This was an amazing gelateria. We had melon, watermelon, peach and Maracuja. In particular the Maracuja one was, while a bit sour, incredible on a hot day.
