Best Affordable Food in the West Village | Eater NY

"Known for granita that transports you to an Italian summer, with classics like lemon and coffee (and occasional flavors like cantaloupe) available in a cup or paired with brioche ($8.50); the shop is very small, so eating on the street is part of the experience." - Melissa McCart

The Best Gelato in New York | Eater NY

"This gelateria originated in the Apulian capital of Bari in 1880, and the flavor of the gelato has antique quality that is totally pleasing. Coffee is at hand in case you want an affogato. This may be the best gelato in town. Look for locations in Nolita, University Place, and Williamsburg." - Melissa McCart

Some of NYC’s Best Dining Is on this Bus Route | Eater NY

"The blocks north of Abingdon Square along 8th Avenue are a great place to stop for a treat. There’s Barachou, turning out multiple flavors of cream puffs, and Aux Merveilleux de Fred, improbably specializing in meringue lumps smeared with frosting. But the best place to stop is Gelateria Gentile, a branch of an ice cream joint hailing from Bari, the capital of Apulia, Italy. Often incorporating fruit imported from Italy, the product is rich and creamy, and the chocolate gelato is the darkest in town. Also consider the fresh-fruit granitas." - Robert Sietsema

Google
Gentile Gelateria is a sleek spot for artisanal gelato, offering a small but carefully curated selection of flavors. What they lack in variety, they make up for in taste — the hazelnut I tried was rich, smooth, and full of flavor, easily one of the better gelatos I’ve had in the city. That said, the portions are on the smaller side, and the prices feel pretty steep for what you actually get. It’s definitely high-quality gelato, but you’ll be paying a premium for the experience. Overall, Gentile is a great place to stop if you’re craving authentic, well-made gelato and don’t mind splurging a bit, but it’s not the most generous scoop in town.

Google
Excellent quality gelato! Very authentic Italian gelato. The pistachio and ricotta fig are delicious flavors! Lots of traditional flavors, but occasionally some interesting flavors, such as tahini. Definitely worth enjoying! Very friendly staff too.

Google
Tried the affogato here and was quite underwhelmed. While they allow you to choose up to two gelato flavors (I went with caramel and pistachio), the scoops were very small. Most of the cup was just whipped cream, which overpowered everything else. The espresso shot was average at best, definitely nothing special and didn’t tie the dessert together the way a proper affogato should. For the price, the quality and portion of ice cream were disappointing. Sadly, I wouldn’t recommend this place.

Google
I’m very particular about ice cream. Most don’t impress me. But Gentile absolutely blew me away. I tried the pistachio and green apple & kiwi, and both were next level delicious. Creamy, vibrant, perfectly balanced flavors. I can’t believe I’m just discovering this place. Wholeheartedly recommended.

Google
This shop provides tasty Gelato in a quiet setting. Hazelnut flavor is really good. Pistachio flavor was different, not what I am normally used to, but not bad either. If I am nearby again, I'm definitely stopping by to try out the rest of the flavors.

Google
Friendly staff, you can sample favors before buying. The favor hazelnut and the milk cream with chocolate chips taste great. I recommend stopping by if you’re in the area.

Google
The staff are always so friendly and accommodating!! Person with the cool glasses -name might be Simon?- makes the absolute best drinks & treats served with the best conversation! @corporate, would love a miniature version of those corona pastries - they’re incredibly yummy but so giant! Perhaps the love is meant to be shared :)

Google
Straight from Italy to ❤️ NYC now has a lot of good and exceptional Gelaterias. This one is absolutely great and their coffees with pastries is a kicker.

Yelp
This place made me soo happy! Ordered their almond and banoffe (banana coffee) but tried soo many flavors and they were all delicious. was really surprised by how delicious their pistachio and vegan dark chocolate flavors were! comparable to Italy's gelato and one of my favorite gelato spots in the city. Also they have cakes and pastries that I'm excited to come back and try next time!

Yelp
Very friendly; you can sample; and the gelato is excellent. We visited 2 of their 6 locations.

Yelp
Dropped in for gelato after getting pizza for dinner at Simo next door; got a wafer cone with 2 flavors : the fondente (dark chocolate) and crema antica (vanilla cream with lemon zest). The fondente was silky and decadent, and the crema antica was refreshing and bright. Excellent service. Beautiful shop. I'm in love.

Yelp
Today was the ideal day to have a gelato. I chose a cone with Crema Antica (my favorite of vanilla with lemon) and Nocciola. Actually there were two cones - the one with the gelatos and a tiny one on top like a hat. I did mention that for $7.08 the amount of gelato seemed tiny. It was luscious and I was tempted to have another but refrained. I did buy a tiny tartlet to eat later. A few people came when I was there. A bright sunny interior and a place I wish I could visit every day!

Yelp
Came by for some after-dinner gelato. The display cases are adorable filled with really nicely-done cakes and pastries. The gelato, however, left a bit to be desired. I wasn't super thrilled by most of the options (the flavors are also fairly limited? so I wasn't even that interested in trying most things). We ended up with a milk cream cup which came with an adorable mini cone on top. However, we did not realize it was going to be $8 for the smallest option, which even for the area is a bit egregious. In the end, would go somewhere else to try next time.

Yelp
dairy free gelato?!? sooooooo freaking delicious!!! i love the dark chocolate and strawberry mix!!! the service here is so good and the place itself is so cute !! if you're ever in the area, i'd totally recommend, there's more locations scattered around too!
google avatar

Yelp
I loved this place! The staff was super friendly, helpful and gave great advice! Naturally had to try 3 flavors- casual, few seats and Italian music plays in the background. The gelato was great! Very flavorful and not too sweet- definitely will go here again!

Ana R.

Yelp
Place was perfect for our late night sugar cravings. Has both classic and unique flavors!

Yelp
Chocolate was amazing. Hazelnut was very good. Pistachio was good. Guy who helped me in there was very nice. It's gelato. It's delicious. I don't ever remember having gelato and saying, this place sucks. Prices aren't too ridiculous. You really can't go wrong here.
google avatar

Yelp
We try pistachio and the flavor is just meh. Too sweet in my opinion. Maybe next time different flavors can change the review ?!

Yelp
This is a good gelato place with some unique flavors. They have a very minimalist aesthetic with the descriptions of the flavors either in small font or behind on the wall. It reminds me a bit of il laboratorio del gelato (with the one in the West Village also closing recently.) It was a very hot day even at nighttime and among their unique flavors, I noticed they had some different takes on a granita and also a cremolata. A granita is essentially a shaved ice while a cremolata is it's rarer creamier variant. You don't see much of either in the city and especially of the latter. For cremolata, they had albicocca (apricot) and for granita, they had limone (lemon,) mandarino (orange,) caffe (coffee,) and mandorla (almond) as well as to my surprise and delight chinotto*. Chinotto is made from the myrtle orange and it is usually made into one of my favorite Italian beverages. It has a wonderful bitter and sweet flavor almost like a coca cola but without the fizz. After trying the albicocca (which was also great,) I tried the chinotto and immediately ordered it. It was 6.50 and packed nicely into the cup. The ices had the same flavor as the soda but a bit stronger and I have 0 complaints about it. I might be bias leaving a 5 based on something that isn't their gelato but it's hard to argue when I'd probably stop here very often if I was in the neighborhood. *Thanks Mike for the refresher on their listing: https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/gelateria-gentile-new-york-2?select=1RR9Ch8TYUFDAzuBERNp1g

Yelp
This spot has a charming, cozy interior with an array of delicious-looking pastries. Seating is limited, with space for about six inside and a bench for four outside. The server was pleasant and welcoming. I was in the mood for gelato, and the variety of unique, fruit-based flavors caught my eye. I chose the chocolate fondante flavor, which was perfect--rich, high-quality chocolate that was wonderfully satisfying. While I've read the reviews about high prices, I found them reasonable for Manhattan, especially given the quality. I'll definitely be back to try the coffee flavor or an affogato!
google avatar

Dahlia R.

Yelp
I'm always in the mood for gelato and/or sorbet, but today I was in the mood for sorbet. Bryant helped me choose my flavors. & he was also super friendly. I went with Limone & Fondent as you can never go wrong with lemon & chocolate, & it was a nice combination of flavors. The lemon had just the right amount of tartness & the chocolate was just perfect & not too sweet as I don't like super sweet gelatos / sorbets. Can't wait to come back

Yelp
Gelateria Gentile remains my top gelato/ice cream spot in NYC. Tried their seasonal cherry flavor this time, and it was fantastic. Convenient location, perfect for a rest during city walks.

Yelp
We wanted a kids scoop but they would not sell it to adults. Not the employee's fault, but what a policy! Not everyone wants a huge size. We got the crema antica (vanilla with lemon zest) and it was good. We also got a slice of the orange sponge cake. Big mistake - extremely dry. Tasted like it had been sitting there all week. Stick to the gelato... and, if you are not a kid, make sure you're hungry.

Karen D.

Yelp
Worst coffee and AVOID! Went on a Saturday PM. Marketed iced cappuccino and iced latte but got iced milk and water down coffee. Store staff advised " if you want darker, I can add". She poured a pitcher of iced coffee into the iced milk. It's comical what they are serving. Do not waste your money on this place, you can do much better in the area! The Worst! From a decade long NYC local.

Yelp
I have a list of my top 5 scoops in NYC, and this place is threatening to break into that exclusive group. Flavor wise, they knock it out of the park with the balance. I've had 4 flavors here - a dark chocolate, a vanilla with lemon, a lemon sorbet, and a pear sorbet. The sorbets were deliciously refreshing and fragrant - the pear was basically like eating the ripest, most floral pear you've ever eaten, and the lemon was just a little sour to bring out the more delicate lemon fragrance. The chocolate was dense and thick, slightly grainy, and deeply chocolatey with some bitterness. It paired excellently with the mild, creamy vanilla accented with just a bit of lemon for interest. I am IN LOVE. Don't miss the edible cone cups and the mini cone top. Gelateria Gentile gets extra points for their massive display of which flavors have which ingredients and allergens, making it friendlier for the vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free people among us (do check with them re: cross contamination!). Do be aware that the available flavors change and it's usually a subset of all of the flavors listed on their allergen wall. Only thing I don't like are the prices, but unfortunately $7 for two flavors at the smallest size is the base price for most gelato and ice cream places in the city nowadays.

Yelp
Walking around the study around the west village, I came across this gelato place because it caught my eye tucked away on the side of the street. I usually am up for dessert right after I had a meal, and decided to try this gelato place. They had a wide variety of flavors to choose from and I thought that their menu was very detailed since it listed out the ingredients it contained and was very transparent. I also thought that their cone cup was creative with the cone sticking out, but a bit unsanitary during covid times so I opted for the regular cup. For the price, I don't think the amount of what I got was enough and the topping of whipped cream made it seem like I had less gelato to begin with. The flavor I got also didn't stand out to me that much, so it was just ok. Overall, if you're in the area and want to check out this gelato place, its a fine place if you're just trying it out for the first time. But, I probably would not come back again as there are better gelato places in the area.

Yelp
I've had the pleasure of visiting their Williamsburg location a few years ago and I've been in love ever since. Gelateria has some of the best and creamiest gelato I've ever tried. The flavors are authentic and bring you a taste of Italy, from the fruit based flavors to their more cream based ones. This new location is super cute and quaint. The staff is also very nice and welcoming. And they have a variety of Italian desserts that look so scrumptious. I'm definitely looking forward to visiting here again.

Yelp
Stopped by here after dinner on a Friday night. There are so many gelato flavor choices here! We were able to sample some but they only limit you to a choice of 3 samples so I ended up picking blind and got the yogurt gelato which is one of the most popular ones. I was very happy with the flavor choice. The yogurt was not super sweet and was a little bit tart, portions were generous and texture was the right amount of creamy. I loved that they put a mini cone on the gelato, it's so cute. Would come back for the yogurt gelato!
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
First it is trying too hard. All the flavors are in Italian with no translation so you need to awkwardly ask over and over what flavor it is. They are stingy with samples. And honestly the lady helping us was super rude. The actual gelato was just okay but I would rather go elsewhere.
google avatar

Megana V.

Yelp
Super creamy gelato and stretchy gelato! Got the hazelnut and pistachio. Both were really good, authentic flavors and not too sweet! The portion size was generous for a gelato place/the cup size. Worth trying out imo! Also all the flavors are in Italian so just ask if you were confused like me and they do give out samples!

Yelp
I got the hazelnut (nocciola) affogato Al caffe. It was amazing. And the staff here was so lovely and helpful.

Nourai E.

Yelp
All very good authentic gelato flavors. Probably my fave in the city just because if it's simplicity and really great flavor.

Yelp
Food: 3/5 Service: 1/5 Atmosphere: 3/5 We used to come to this location almost every weekend with our 8 yr old son. The flavors used to be interesting compared to Amorino across the street. However, they don't rotate their flavors as much as they used to, and when it's hot out, their gelato that they scoop out of the fridge is almost melting. Their service has gone downhill too. One of the staff did not provide us with proper amount of gelato when I ordered 2 flavors in a small cup. The first flavor was covered flat on the small cup, but the second flavor barely covered the top of the first flavor. I told her the portion of each flavor was not 50/50. It was more 80/20. She just said "that's how it is". Horrible answer and service. Mind you we have been coming to this location for at least 2 yrs. Avoid coming here and spend your money elsewhere.

Yelp
This is five star gelato. We are aficionados, having pursued the best gelato all over Europe and in every US city to which we have traveled. This is on par with the best - creamy, served at exactly the right temperature, and so flavorful. The pastries here are top-notch, too. And the Italian behind the counter - such a lovely person.

Yelp
i studied abroad in milan, and when i was there, someone told me that the legit gelato is the kind that's stored and presented in metal containers, and i indeed found those to be the most tasty. i was intrigued that most of the most famous gelaterias were just in plastic tubs with a glass screen, the way any standard ice cream chain sold theirs. i think i found the best gelato in the city of NY! served in metal, this tiny shop serves 10+ flavors daily, with different kinds each day. it's served with a little cone on top and whipped cream, and is delicious! there's no indoor seating, but a few cute tables and seats right outside that you can enjoy. it averages about $8 for a small cup, and you can get up to two flavors. i got the nocciola (hazelnut) and fior di latte (cream) both of which i loved. the fragola (strawberry) was so good too. i'll be taking all my friends here :)
google avatar

Haejin J.

Yelp
Get the bergamot (citrus often used in earl grey teas) and the insonia (Nutella vanilla pistachio wafer). bergamot has to be the most interesting and fancy gelato / ice cream flavor I've had in years. The staff was pleasant and willing to share information and samples with me on a late Sunday night and I was here for it.
google avatar

Ti W.

Yelp
Love the exotic flavors here! I had the orange yogurt and it was very delicious! It was not super sweet, with a great balance of sour and sweetness front which yogurt. The girl helping me was very warm and friendly, explaining what each flavor was with a lot of patient.

Yelp
Amorino's was closed for renovations today (open again tomorrow) and I saw this new sparkling gelateria right across the street on my disappointing walk back to the subway station. It was totally empty, but it looked very promising - signs saying established 1880, a minimalistic clean space, and rows of gray covered canisters. In times like this, I especially appreciate that the gelato is not out and exposed. The sole person manning the store was very patient with me as I discussed gelato options on the phone with my friend, and he translated ALL the flavors for me because I don't know any Italian. (I understood nutella, ricotta, and pistaccio, but that was about it). The second row displayed contains non-dairy/sorbet, of which fondente (dark chocolate) is oddly present. The third row displayed the classic gelatos. They didn't have hazelnut (just a sponge cake with nutella drizzle), but I ordered the fondente and the pistaccio in their small ($17) to-go container. I also tasted the white chocolate passionfruit gelato, which was delightful and had bits of passionfruit crackle for texture. The fondente was deliciously rich, creamy, and dark for being non-dairy, and the pistachio was excellently nutty and tasted like actual pistachios. The small container (2 flavors) is $17 and the large one (3 flavors) is $34; I'm not sure how much gelato that encapsulates, but it was more than I expected. The gelato kept pretty well on my 30 minute commute in my cooler bag. I expect that this gelateria will be very popular quite soon; it probably didn't have a wait today because it's new and it's 16 degrees today.
google avatar

Marissa S.

Yelp
3.5 stars for fairly average gelato. Tried the hazelnut and crème caramel, which were as expected. Frankly all I really wanted was the hazelnut but they were very pushy in terms of not having that alone. I guess they thought they knew something I didn't. At any rate, it was good but nothing I would race back for.

Danielle A.

Yelp
Gelato is great but their portion sizes have gotten too small. Couldn't tell if it was just the person scooping my ice cream (she seemed to be struggling to get the second flavor in my cone, so maybe she's new) or if they're skimping now. Will give it another try, but if the portions are still skimpy, will stop going back
google avatar

Rezaul K.

Yelp
Probably the best gelato I have had in Queens! Creamy, not overly sweet. Lines are always long but it moves fast! I like the newly renovated spot, it has more room and seating.

The Queen Of New York City M.

Yelp
I've ordered from their Brooklyn location a few times the passed year, I was in the city picking something up and didn't know they had a location here, and had time to burn so I stopped in to get a small gelato. So delicious, I got the white chocolate, I will be back to try more, was gonna buy my parents some treats from the case but didn't feel like carrying it all around the city and back to queens but it all looked good. I took these pictures asking my mom through text if she wanted something, she'll get something next time I'm there

Holly D.

Yelp
An adorable (teeny tiny!) shop. We stopped in on a Friday maybe 30-45 minutes before closing. There was a line out the door, but the place is so tiny even a few people would make a line out the door. Pros: perfect gelato made up for any negatives. It was PERFECT. Cons: -only 4 flavors available when I went -workers were not super helpful and friendly -the cone didn't taste as good as I had hoped There were, I think, 2 flavors of gelato left and 2 sorbet flavors left. I tested both gelatos- one was ricotta fig and the other was possibly fiordilatte. I can't remember for sure. I asked what fiordilatte is and they said "like vanilla"- which was annoying because they didn't describe what it actually is. I did order the fiordilatte and it was decidedly not vanilla. It was better! It was so very delicious and subtle and tastes like the best and freshest cream possible and I thought I detected the tiniest hint of almond. Somebody I was with asked if they had anything with chocolate- they said no. But as soon as we paid somebody brought a container of something chocolatey out to sell. It looked good!

Shan L.

Yelp
Amazing gelato, the dark chocolate flavor is the richest and the darkest I've ever had. And get the chinotto flavor if you get a chance, it's an Italian citrus fruit, but tastes nothing like the citrus I've had before.
google avatar

Gabriela N.

Yelp
Came in at 11:51pm on Saturday March 4. I didn't even get to order because as soon as I came in the employee didn't greet us or said hi... he said "Ok guys we close in 9minutes so let's make this quick" I turned around and left. I didn't feel like ordering anymore. Definitely will not be coming back after his attitude and it doesn't take too long to order ice cream. I understand people have to close and have to go home but this is no way of treating customers. I came here to get ice cream because I had a bad day at work and he made it worse. So I suggest if you are feeling down and depressed and want ice cream don't come here. A sample would've been nice.

Sarah C.

Yelp
Horrible service, I wanted a slice of tart but they went to the back to get the last piece of an old one. Said it was fresh and that they had to throw away old ones but then why not throw away from the one out front then? Clearly trying to sell old left overs

Kevin O.

Yelp
Went here with my friend after work cause we wanted gelato but was served with gelato and an extremely unprofessional attitude on top. PS. We work in retail. We walked in late at night and did our order as usual and my friend told her specifically we want two cups of different gelato. Unforenoutly she messes up our order. Now, we don't mind waiting to remake but I legit watched her throw the gelato in the trash unhappy and mad. No apology at all that she messed up. We didn't even give her an attitude. If you don't like working where you are then leave. You probably don't belong in new york city anyways. I don't know understand how this store hires people. Yes I will be going back. Yes, I will tell her out loud with friend next time she caught an attitude with us. I really enjoy the gelato but saddly.

Nader M.

Yelp
Always a banger and a go to. The gelato here is very rich and smooth. The one caveat is that sometimes they have off menu flavors that should be listed for customers; I recall it was pistachio, which sounds really odd to leave off the menu, but it could've just been that day that they didn't post it. Ask if they have anything not on the menu to be sure, but all of their flavors are good.

Beanie F.

Yelp
The gelato here is good. Not great but good. They have standard flavors but all in Italian and no translations and the staff doesn't seem to be able to translate which is in a word, odd. And there in lies the reason for the two stars: the service is bizarrely bad. I walked in when there was one other customer who was being very strange and refusing to order. This person finally moved on and when it was my turn to order everything was off. I wanted three cups of gelato. I got one with three different gelatos. I asked what's this mean, I was not told. I asked for to go lids. Was told there was none. I asked for a bag and then was asked do you want this in the bag? Yup. That's why I asked for the bag. Again, the gelato is good enough but the service is truly bizarre.

Jorge Sosa S.

Yelp
The apple pie it's terrible, and there's no wifi :(. The coffee is nice and I he croissant it's good.

Leyla A.

Yelp
Ordered a lemonade and when I was getting to the bottom I see this, looks like roach droppings

Lex I.

Yelp
We got the chocolate, hazelnut, and vanilla crème and it was absolutely perfect. Would definitely go back

Kathleen S.

Yelp
Really rich and smooth gelato. I got pistachio, and I absolutely loved it, next time I'll get 3 scoops. The caramel was ok. Anyways, the customer service was amazing. I have to be frank I am no expert of gelato so I stood there for a good 3-5 minutes trying to understand the Italian and guess what they were. But the guy saw me obviously confused, so he told me to come closer and he would explain the whole process to me. So he told me what are the cones, how are they different, what flavors they have today, toppings, all in plain English. Me and my friend wanted to share the ice cream, and initially the guy gave me one baby-cone (used to scoop the gelato, so you don't have to make a mess and you don't need to throw out a plastic spoon after you're done, just eat the baby-cone), and when he realized we were sharing he just gave us two baby-cones without asking. Overall, the gelato is smooth and rich, the place seems clean and well-designed, the customer service is very considerate and patient, definitely will visit again!

Sofi S.

Yelp
The employees are so sweet and very kind but i feel like people abuse with their kindness and trying the samples and then go, wasting the employees' time and customers' time waiting in line. ***Please stop giving free samples.*** I really love this gelateria. The ice cream and other products are delicious and the quality is the best.

Hello I.

Yelp
I had an apple cake that was in the refrigerator case, but is smelled/tasted like refrigerator. The case has absorbed all the smell of the refrigerator case. It was not edible for me. So I wasted like $7 on that. I had some gelato, but it wasn't very good. Just soft and melting ice cream with not much flavor. Croissant with cream wasn't impressive either. So, I don't think I'm going back there.

Lisa K.

Yelp
They have the best Stracciatella and get it with the panna (whip cream). Flavors differ each day and really happy there are more options than amorino.

L K.

Yelp
best gelato in the city surprised there are so few reviews. went in on a whim when we walked by and it's my new favorite place
