On the Grid : Gelato Messina

"It’s the best gelato in Australia. It’s got a relaxed, milk-bar vibes as well as a vast array of staple, classic flavours. They also have new, crazy, mind-bendingly delicious concoctions every few weeks (such as, sage & burnt butter, chilli peanut satay, and pavlova, just to name a few). What else are we supposed to say? Stop reading this right now, go to Messina, and cram as much gelato as you can manage into your gaping maw." - For the People

The 38 Best Restaurants in Sydney, Australia | Eater

"You’ll find enticing scoops all over Sydney, from the peach and basil flavor at Randwick’s Gaia Gelato to the turon gelato with caramelized spring roll crisps at Burwood’s Kariton Sorbetes. But Gelato Messina HQ in Marrickville might be the most blockbuster sweet tooth-friendly venue out there. Gelato specials can include favorite flavors like pavlova or Robert Brownie Jr., alongside regular offerings like pistachio praline, all churned from Jersey milk from Messina’s 500-strong dairy herd on its Victorian farm. There are also frozen cakes (like tiramisu tarts) and a chocolate cabinet displaying artisan takes on Iced VoVos, Wagon Wheels, and other Australian supermarket sweets sculpted with single-origin cacao from Ecuador. Know before you go: You’ll also find an in-house bakery (the excellent Shadow Baking) and restaurant (the cutely named Erin)." - Lee Tran Lam

Why is Gelato Messina so good? I wish we had it in New Zealand! The gelato is silky, light, and packed with the most delicious flavours. We tried two of the specials—Robert Brownie Jnr and a caramel dulce de leche cheesecake chunk flavour. Both were exquisite. Our server was lovely and very patient, letting us try several flavours before deciding. Overall, an amazing experience with top-notch gelato and excellent service.

Google
It’s so crowded so basically it’s a takeout shop. We tried pistachio and caramel with white choco. The caramel gelato taste very delicious but the pistachio is relatively ordinary.

Google
I don’t understand the high reviews. Ice creams were correct but not excellent. Service was very good. Nice employee encouraging customers to try flavors.

Google
Small shop just off Bondi beach. All the delicious flavours you can think of including specials. Takeaway without any seats.

Google
Fresh, custom cakes ready for pickup! Perfect for any occasion and so easy to order online.

Google
Gelato Messina in the heart of Bondi. Some really interesting flavours - but more ice cream than gelato. The Pistachio Praline was nice, but sort of like Connoisseur ice cream, rich and heavy. Cookies and Cream similar story. Ice cream. Nice but rich. Milk Choc with peanut fudge also nice, rich. Nice place to visit.

Google
Massina offers a truly delightful experience, particularly for vegans seeking a variety of refreshing and tantalizing flavors. Moving beyond the standard, mundane options like coconut and lemon sorbet, this gelateria presents a delightful array of innovative and scrumptious choices that are sure to satisfy any palate.

Google
Gini was so kind and helpful. She let me try multiple flavors and I never felt rushed or judged. Afterwards, she educated me on the farm Messina operates and how humanely they treat their animals. I love that. 10/10

Yelp
12/6/24 Yuuuuuum.. I cannot pass a gelato spot and not sample and/or purchase. Needless to say I was not disappointed. Passed by on way to bus to head back to hotel. Sampled a few and selected a yummy choice. I believe it was cone-ception. Staff friendly and indulging when sampling flavors.

Yelp
LOVED the gelato here...I wish I sampled more, but then I'd be there all day! I got the white chocolate hazelnut and hokey pokey. I will definitely be back for more of their unique flavors!

Yelp
After walking from Koogie beach to Bondi, we finished up lunch and wanted a sweet treat. This was rated one of the top gelato places in Sydney, so we opted to try it. Each one of us got a different flavor, including passionfruit, a honeycomb flavored one cinnamon with spices and chocolate, etc.cute walk up location. Very friendly service and very helpful in picking out flavors. The ice cream taste of freshly made and we saw some of it being made in a little room next-door. Definitely try again. Cool vibes.

Yelp
Excellent gelato and inventive flavors (with sometimes rather raunchy names; see pic!). I've been a fan since they only had spots on Crown Street in Surry Hills and Victoria Street in Darlinghurst. As I lived in the Eastern Suburbs, I was overjoyed when this shop opened (in 2014, I believe). It can get massively crowded on summer days and pleasant weekends, but always worth the wait.

Yelp
Messina's is my ultimate Kryptonite. I cannot get enough of this place. It is conveniently located and I cannot resist it. The flavors aren't your ordinary Gelato flavors. The have the classics but what I really look forward to are the limited edition flavors they come up with. During Game of Thrones, they have GOT Themed flavors. Some of the top memorable flavors have been The Voicemail: salted caramel gelato with baked cheesecake, candied macadamia nuts and hazelnut fudge. The Boss's Wife - Hazelnut Gelato and coffee gelato with white chocoalte and hazelnut praline ganache. True Romance - peanut butter gelato smashed with caramel brownie, milk choco peanut fudge and candied peanuts. Are you drooling yet? One scoop will run you about $5. I always go with a 1/2 litre, because you just don't know if they'll ever have that flavor again. It's living live on the edge with Messina, one day the flavor is there and the next it's gone. I've never had a flavor I did not like. The Pistachio Praline, Coconut Lychee, and salted carmel are some all year round flavors that a are a must try. Try and get there before the dessert rush (after dinner time) the line can get long, but goes by quickly. It's just a store front so you have to order it to go, but that's ok because you can go sit at the beach and enjoy it (if it makes it that far.) I have a serious addiction that I don't plan on quitting anytime soon.

Yelp
I visit Sydney once a year every year and one of my stops is this Messina gelato ice cream. The one I always go for is rhubarb gelato, Unfortunately they're out of stock last night so I had to try something else. I tried the Italian Nougat gelato. Absolutely delicious. It's a must do.

Yelp
Located in Bondi Beach this place looked like the most popular ice cream/frozen yogurt/gelato location where there are many close to the beach. Good variety of flavors and it was great gelato. I posted some pictures of the specials and the prices. They have about 20 flavors a day.

Allison T.

Yelp
So many tasty flavors to choose from. Love how they have rotating special flavors to mix things up.

Yelp
Since hanging our hats in Bondi Beach, I kid you not...we stop by for our daily dose of gelato at Messina each night. We love getting a mixture of three flavors to share that are always rich and creamy with lots of delicious flavor. I can't think of any flavor that we haven't liked so far, but my go-tos are Nicky Glasses, Oreogasmic and the Macadamia crunch! Be sure to check out the rotating flavors on their Instagram page if you want to have your ideas to try ahead of time, which I would totally recommend since it's a bit of a free for all at the counter. I give the staff lots of credit for dealing with the gelato-crazed masses!

Yelp
The best gelato I ever had. Even I just went to Italy and ate bunch of gelatos. The gelato here is creamy, rich taste. We ordered 3 scoops of Pistacio, coconut caramel and macademia nuts. I liked the coconut caramel the most. My local friend recommended solted caramel and tiramisu. I wanna go back and eat more!
google avatar

Ed L.

Yelp
Classic flavours, at their best. Chocolate fondant and raspberry are a winning combination. For special occasions, go for the mushroom cake - it looks and taste fantastic.... And is very reasonably price! The queue can be a problem on week ends. Also, don't expect original icecream flavours - only the classics
google avatar

Jonathan R.

Yelp
Had gelato in Italy, US and now Sydney. I must confess this was absolutely the fucking best Gelato I have ever put in my mouth. Period.

Yelp
Oh my wow. I've been here in Bondi three days, and had to exercise great restraint to only have had one scoop a day. It does/doesn't help that they are right next to the lobby of the hotel I'm staying at, but really, that's such a first world problem. The variety is astounding, and it'd be such a nitpicky thing to complain about the varieties of chocolate they have - sorbet, gianduia, fondant?! It could be too many for people like me who won't get to try them again for a while, and obvious can't (or shouldn't) eat them all at once. I don't know how they make such brilliant gelato. Smooth, rich, not ice-chunky... I wish they could open something in Singapore, and show people how gelato really is meant to be - DELICIOUS. p.s. I did eat all those three flavours of chocolate. And then some.
google avatar

Lani P.

Yelp
Chances are it'll take you longer to choose a flavour than it will to eat it. You'll deliberate over salted caramel, yoghurt caramel or the specials like Dulche and Gabana. And whether it's the smooth marketing or facts like the apple pie flavour includes real apple pie made by the team that morning - it's a must stop when in Sydney. This is it's newest location and as such it's not nearly as busy as Darlinghurst can get. Bonus! It's cash only though but for $3 you can rustle up a spare change one scoop to satisfy your cravings.

Yelp
There is no point considering your calorie intake for the day when deciding on whether to go the 1, 2 or 3 scoops here. It's 2 scoops or it's nothing. Like an artist I take my gelato curation very seriously. It is a careful and considered process and those wonderful staff members behind the counter of over 20 gelato on offer will passionately let you taste as many flavours as you like before you put together your masterpiece. Some helpful hints for the emerging artists out there: - Don't do things like getting the salted caramel and the dulce de leche yoghurt - Their flavours of the week can be hit and miss but they'll never be bad (this week it was the Campari & Orange Marmalade that had me melting quicker than the gelato) - This place is pumping like a nightclub from 8pm until close but lines move quickly so be patient and you will be rewarded.

Yelp
The first time I walked by Messina's I was an idiot because I didn't even care to question why there were so many people waiting around for... something. Whatever that thing was. But after living minutes walk away and remembering that I have eyes on my face, I took a real glance and told myself I had to come try whatever it was that people seriously crowd around for some day. Let me tell the gelato here is delicious, it will make you come back for more, and I can't wait to come back to Bondi to eat it again. My personal favorite is salted caramel and white chocolate... but if I am feeling like a second scoop that night you betcha it's apple pie.

Yelp
Disgusted with lack of care for customers well-being. I asked what was in one of their icecreams as I'm allergic to nuts. I was told caramel and chocolate so I proceeded to order only to bite into a spoon full of nuts and then be told after that ALL chocolate icecream have nuts- why exactly? Very inconsiderate to elimate an entire customer basis on the most common food allergy! And when asked, it'd be wise to mention or clearly label it somewhere. My friend enjoyed her icecream and raves about this place so I'll give it 2 stars but very disappointed.

Yelp
As someone that avoids nightclubs like the plague, waiting for ice-cream at Messina is about the closest I ever get to that crowded, music pumping queuing experience. It's crazy, but thankfully in Sydney it's nothing compared to the chaos of only having one venue in Melbourne. On a recent visit to Sydney, I wound up staying next door to Messina for three days. Which meant I ate ice cream three times. Ok maybe even more than that, after receiving some wisdom that ordering the $3 baby scoop means there's room for day and night Messina. Genius. While this store might be smaller than some of the others, the range is definitely not small and I still found myself with total choice anxiety. On all occasions I went for specials of the day and they were just amazing. One was Cereal Milk gelato with Momofuko Crack Pie (incredible, I couldn't have it just once!) and the last was Red Velvet - cream cheese gelato with red velvet cake. This is not the kind of place that uses crappy flavouring or offers up flavours that vaguely resemble the name. No-sir-ee. This is the kind of place that says red velvet cake and means the ice-cream you wind up with it 90% delicious cake. I will miss you Messina. Back to Melbourne now where my trips will be less frequent to avoid the nightclub experience. Please open more!

Yelp
Some of the best gelato I've ever had! I stopped by after 10pm on a Tuesday and was greeted right away. Customer service is great and free samples are offered which is helpful because they have some flavors I've never heard of. I like chocolate anything so I went for a scoop of Gianduia which is chocolate and hazelnut. So pretty much it was Nutella but better. I also tasted a hint of cinnamon which reminded me of Mexican hot chocolate! Love it!
google avatar

Laura N.

Yelp
I mean... it's Gelato Messina. And while this isn't my favourite of their now three Sydney locations, when we're talking about life-changing gelato, there's really not much to complain about. Especially not the non-existent lines. Call me crazy, but I'm also going to second Ryan F's expert analysis. I do like my gelato on the lighter icy side vs richer creamy side, but it's an easy fix at Gelato Messina: stay on the left side of the case and go with one of their many amazing sorbets. My winning combo? One scoop cherry sorbet, one scoop dark chocolate sorbet. Enjoy heaven.

Yelp
Pleasure. Kindness. Almost no wait; waiting interspersed with tastes of incredible flavors from patient, generous humans. I usually dislike fruit ice cream because it tastes too processed. So if you're like me, note that their pear rhubarb was creamy and not jammy, and give the fruit options a whirl. So much pleasure. So worth it.

Yelp
The only bad thing about Messina is that it always takes years (yes, no exaggeration obviously!) to decide which flavour. Because they are ALL so incredibly delicious! I have had Messina countless times, and I wish I could describe the rich flavour of each gelato, but it is just. not. possible. Damn. But for now, I'll just mouthwateringly describe the flavours I most recently tried! For one, we have the red velvet flavour. Cake pieces in a creamy red-white swirl of cake-batter ice cream, it is absolutely delicious! As for the passionfruit meringue tart, it was a refreshing flavour with a strong sweetness that may or may not have sent me buzzing :) The lychee sorbet was the most refreshing, even more than mango, and reminded me almost of a slushie in texture, just a little harder. God, I'm dreaming about it now! My favourite was the Peach Trifle, with jelly, gelato and sponge biscuits all in one scoop of heaven. This concoction was rich, and reminded me of a trifle for sure, what more could one ask for!
google avatar

Cynthia T.

Yelp
Tried the passion fruit, macadamia nut and hokey pokey, all good flavors with a cone. Seemed a bit expensive for one scoop but the flavors were unique and we will be going back to try more!
google avatar

Jayne C.

Yelp
Messina in Bondi has all the magic of the Surry Hills and Darlinghurst stores without the soul crushing line. In a town full of ice creameries, Messina is totally worth the short walk away from the beach. I personally am a sucker for any sort of peanut butter/caramel/chocolate combination and this week was no exception - TRUE ROMANCE: PB gelato smashed with chocolate brownie and chocolate peanut fudge scattered with candied peanuts. It was a complete gelatogasm.
google avatar

Lou M.

Yelp
This is hands down, without a doubt, Sydneys most popular gelato; I can't believe it's not number 1! Everything is made in house - from the gelato base, to the sauces, the mix ins (baklava, lamington, caramel etc) and everything in between, it's all made from scratch by Messina. They have the traditional flavours which are mighty tasty (gianduia is my true love) but they are known for their crazy concoctions! For example 'Elvis the fat years' is made of peanut butter gelato, banana jam and brioche fried in butter. That is just one example! Anyway get yourself to Messina (there's a few locations in Sydney now) and give it a go! Also the prices are really fair.

Yelp
I hardly ever say "Yes" to gelato but I always say "Yes" to ice cream. My friends kept telling me to NOT forget to get Gelato Messina when I visit Bondi Beach and I am so glad that, despite the rain, I went for it! The service was really kind and prompt. The gelato is also to-die-for. Yes, I could have died while eating it and whether or not I went to heaven or hell after totally would not have mattered because this was heaven in a cup. We went to Gelato Messina TWICE on our 5 day trip in Sydney and I'll just say it...YOLO & No Regrets. For reals. Amazing. I will miss you, Gelato Messina. The gelato companies in Hawaii or anywhere else in the world I've had so far don't have anything on you! If you read this and they are still serving, "You Make My Day" then make sure you get it! Apparently this was one of their flavors of the week.

Russell G.

Yelp
Good gelato. Service was good too. Banana split limited time flavor so good. Would come back. Not sure if it is worth passing other gelato places but this had lots of good reviews.
google avatar

Anna K.

Yelp
I'm probably going to sound like a weirdo but I never quite understood the fuss over Messina. But how wrong was I!! It all comes down to the fact I had never tried their pandan & coconut sorbet. Hands down the best sorbet I've ever had. Actually, I think it's the best ice cream/gelato/sorbet ever but then again my pool isn't very big. And it's dairy free. How much better can it get!
google avatar

Mary C.

Yelp
Their gelato is worth the hype. It is amazing and I am not sure what they do to it or how they make it but it is markedly better than other gelato that I have had (which is more gelato than I care to admit)
google avatar

Ryan F.

Yelp
Connoisseurs of ice cream fight the hoards and have a scoop from this new Bondi location. It's ice cream made from high amounts of milk fat, so, of course, it tastes good. The flavors are crafted with care and from high quality ingredients. My only gripe is that the ice cream (it seems more like ice cream and less like gelato) is too rich, too thick. It's a weird complaint, I realize, but I think of Italian gelato to be lighter without sacrificing flavor. Anyway, I recommend the pistachio which packs a nice roasted pistachio flavor paired with coconut. The two together is the meaning of yes.
google avatar

Darren B.

Yelp
Fantastic Gelato! I got the Chocolate Sorbet and Bounty flavors as well as tried a bunch of others. They were quite busy when I was there, but they were very nice and generous with allowing me to taste so many different flavors. It was hard to decide; all of them were so good, but I was happy with the two I went with. Pricing was fair too.
google avatar

Pamela O.

Yelp
I'm not normally a sweet tooth and never usually "leave room for dessert" but I will always sniff out a Gelato Messina when I'm visiting Sydney. Sure it's just 'fancy ice cream' to the uncultured. But it's damn tasty, so creamy and flavoursome, yet not overly rich that it makes you full/sick. Best range of flavours under the Southern Cross with new weekly concoctions that you must try!
google avatar

Sibylla D.

Yelp
Best gelato in the world. Love the caramel flavours.
google avatar

C. G.

Yelp
Holy Hell - this place is THE BEST for gelato. We discovered Messina during our trip to Sydney and we are excited it's coming to the US! The BOUNTY and CREMINA flavors both separately and together (yes, try the double scoop version!) are excellent. We really enjoyed eating the gelato at Messina - it was a HUGE TREAT.

Amanda C.

Yelp
I'm allergic to Dairy- I caved when a nice local saw me walking around browsing the evening sites of Bondi and told me, you HAVE to go here! Well he sure was right, it was so good! I had the tiramisu chocolate- delish! I highly recommend you try this place if you are at Bondi Beach!
