Hot San Diego Restaurant Openings You May Have Missed, September 2025 | Eater San Diego

"Neon-lit and vibey on Poway Road, this self-serve spot mashes up froyo, a cereal bar, a candy shop, and a snack shop—despite the name, there’s no gelato—offering a pay-by-weight buffet of fruit bits, boba, crumbled cookies, chocolate chips, and a wide array of cereals for toppings; the homegrown Gelato brand has evolved from cannabis into canned still and flavored sparkling water and now sweets, with a hidden-door back room stocked with unusual global snacks—from Japanese Kit-Kats to steak-flavored potato chips—accessed via a vending machine front with a secret code." - Helen I. Hwang

Google
I love how unique and cute this froyo/Gelato spot is. I went around the holidays so it was decorated accordingly. They offer different flavors of froyo and Gelato and lots of topping options too. I'm a peanut butter lover so I really appreciated all the pb toppings and the toasted marshmallow froyo was so good. The hidden room with all the imported snacks was really cool to check out too!

Google
Such a fun and much needed addition to Poway!! Great for kids & adults who appreciate creativity, fun, and sweets! Frozen yogurt was delicious with so many options of unique and OG flavors, nostalgic candy wall and a cereal bar. The back vending machine style room was so fun and stocked with items you can’t get anywhere else. Seating indoors and out. Highly recommend supporting this local business!

Google
Amazing place but hard to find if you're not searching in Google maps. Love the theme and decor- makes you feel like a kid in a candy store which they also have a separate room as well. Great selection of frozen yogurt. The chocolate is great but the tart flavor was a let down. They also have cereal selection you can choose from but hard to tell what kind of cereal since there isn't a label. $3 for milk. Lots of space to hangout and enjoy. Definitely worth visiting.

It's a MUST VISIT! Think Yogurtland but 3 times BIGGER! So welcoming and love instant happy vibes! Gelato Sweet Spot is showing the POWAY & it's San Diego friends soo much LOVE! FREE FROZEN YOGURT & TOPPINGS TILL 9/5. This spot isn't giving you those tiny cups, they are giving you those regular medium cups where you can do some damage and live out your frozen yogurt fantasy. I did! I put all 40 toppings on my froyo and I was one happy girl! This dessert shop is insane! One side is build your own frozen yogurt station and the 40 different toppings & syrups at the bar is everyone's dream! (Think Yogurtland on steroids! ) The other side is a candy bar and the other wall is a cereal bar. Shhh!!! There is a secret CANDY & SNACK VAULT! Every cool unique drink, chips, gummies, candy, cookies, ramen and soo much more is in this vault! On IG, they will reveal the secret code to access this Gelafo Sweet Spot Vault.

Google
First impression…pink neon! This place is so spacious with 12 gelato flavors on rotation at 0.75 cents an ounce and lots of topping options. Two bowl sizes. Another area of candy like Sweet Factory for the same price then another area of cereal choices! Don’t forget the international candy room. They also have merch. When I walked in, I was greeted and they were giving out cute key chains and stickers. She handed me a few sample cups to taste. I tasted most and settled with strawberry and coconut with toppings of mochi, fruit jelly and gram cracker. I prefer gelato in ice cream form not yogurt form. Sadly I will not return but I can see this as a hang out place for teenagers or after school sports meet up.

Google
Wonderful ice cream shop! The place is very clean, the passion fruit flavor is absolutely delicious, and the staff are kind and welcoming. We had a great experience and will definitely come back.

Google
My family & I love this place!☺️ It’s a family owned business and it was very kind of them to give free yogurt for a WEEK! They put a lot of time & effort into making this a fun, welcoming, clean place to be at. The yogurt is delicious & there’s so many toppings to choose from 😋 I like that I can add cereal from the huge milk bar or a variety of candy toppings from the bins! 😄 and also all the cool exotic candies in the secret room! My kids had a blast getting their faces painted & cool balloons on opening day. Photos on the huge animal cracker were so cute & fun! This place is great! Definitely worth checking out!

Yelp
Such a cute frozen yogurt shop, they had various toppings, candies, and cereal. The hidden room in the back was awesome, I have never seen or heard of most of the brands back there. There was also a refrigerator with international beverages, pretty cool. Even though the business is called Gelato Sweetspot, they only serve frozen yogurt. I got a large half coffee and half coconut bowl and mixed in various toppings. It was delicious and filling and that was my dinner for the evening. It's worth a try, I will definitely come back here.

Yelp
Paid by card. Gelato Sweetspot is located in a plaza and offers a lot of plaza parking. I've been here several times on weekday nights and there aren't many people here so there are no long waits. It is cutely decorated and very clean. There is a self-serve yogurt area with TONS of toppings, a "secret' candy room, drinks, and a gelato freezer. (I think the gelato freezer was recently added since I didn't see it during previous trips.) The staff is always nice. Personally, I think the cereal topping station could be taken out or reduced and a coffee bar with dispensers could be there. The space is so huge. I would recommend this place and would go back.

Yelp
I love this little spot it's fun and a great place for hanging out with friends. You choose your yoghurt or gelato, as your favorite toppings and they'll weigh it. That's how much your cup will cost. Must come back again.

Yelp
Before departing Poway recently, I stopped by this family-run business for a cold sweet treat. Although the name was misleading because no gelato was served, the space was HUGE for a dessert shop. It was decorated with bright pink colors and could pass for a frozen yogurt version of Candyland. I do worry that the suite was located in a small strip mall that didn't seem to be busy in the evening hours. The positive was that parking spaces were ample. There were six stations in the back left corner that each dispensed two flavors of frozen yogurt. That seemed to be the standard quantity, however they had the space to offer much more. The price was $0.75 per ounce which was around the typical going rate nowadays with the local shops. What was more impressive to me were the displays and varieties of toppings. There was a standalone bar with the wet toppings near the fro-yo dispensers. Along two of the walls were the candy bins and the cereal cylinders. I obtained a couple of tasters and sampled two of the flavors that were rotated weekly. I decided on the Raspberry Pomegranate and the Mountain Blackberry because they were unique fruity varieties. I swirled them together in a cup without any toppings added. As a first time customer, the cashier gave a 50% discount which was very generous. One corner of the room had three small round tables with chairs and sofas. They could probably add some benches along the perimeter to increase the seating capacity. In a back corner was a secret room that displayed a large quantity of Asian-based candies and snacks. I don't know how many of those products were actually being purchased, but they certainly piqued my curiosity. The opposite front corner had a pink elephant that was social media friendly as people hopped on to pose for photos. Overall, I appreciated how much effort and resources the owners placed into making Gelato Sweetspot a customer-friendly environment.

Yelp
I came back after attending the Yelp Elite Experience here, and I was very happy with the service and the yogurt soft serve. My "complaint" is using the word "gelato" in the business name. Full disclosure: My wife is Italian, and we take our gelato very seriously. That aside, this is a fun place to enjoy some YSS. With a dozen favors on tap and oodles of toppings, I can't wait to bring my twin nieces and grandchild when they visit. Parking in the shared Library Center lot is easy.

Yelp
I had an awesome time and it was a great experience coming here. I'll be coming back again for sure.

Yelp
Recommended to me by a friend. Came here w/ my daughter. Was a magical place. Very middle school kid friendly. Lots of seating and froyo of course. But the surprise hit was the hidden snack area. Mysterious snacks from around the world. Some of them like coke w different cans was cool. Others were just unique. Defiantly coming here again.

Yelp
Well what a nice way to add some much needed color to Poway Gelati Sweetspot! We were coming home and stopped in for a sweet treat. To my surprise the place was stunning! I grabbed a taster and sampled Georgia Peach and a raspberry pomegranate mix. I opted for the Georgia Peach as it was delicious. I didn't add anything extra from the bar as I liked it just the way it tasted alone. They do offer a military discount, just ask. Five this new place a try and check out the pictures because it's just so cool inside!

Yelp
Place is located same complex as Floaties, PP Cut n shave, and near Taco Bell. Parking shared with all the other business. Place is vibrant with lots of pink color and places to take pictures for social media. There is a small "secret" door that leads to a candy like store with lots of goods from out of the country. Chips, candy, soda, etc. from overseas. They have plenty of flavors to choose from with lots of topping choices. Customer service was great and the cashier was very helpful. Would recommend coming to this place if you need a froyo fix.

Yelp
This is definitely a fun place to visit! I came here for a Yelp event but I was back in the area and I remembered the Sugar Babies Sour Apple flavored candies. I had brought to camp with me and left it on the table and anyone that had tried it loved them. So I returned to buy the last box they had on the shelf. So this is in the Secret Room, full of different and fun snacks and candies! Don't forget to visit this room. But you will be amazed how inviting this store is when you walk in! It's like being a kid again for me. The view of all the toppings available, even cereal! Then you have the fresh/wet toppings off to the side. Then of course the selection of yogurts! They keep some of the basic flavors but have new flavors come in too! Don't forget to take pics at the photo props! Teagan has great customer service!

Yelp
Sweetest spot in town! Staff is lovely and were giving out free stickers and keychains. Want some relief from the blazing heat? Stop by Gelato Sweetspot to have a little cup of FroYo! I'll admit, when I saw the name "Gelato", I was confused that it was basically the cutest frozen yogurt spot I've eve been to. Complete with a little phot op corner with a frosted horse cookie and nostalgic ice cream chairs outside. Made me smile before I even walked inside. But alas, no gelato, which was a bummer. All good! My favorite was the Georgia Peach which I topped with Mochi. It was cool and refreshing and had just the right amount of tang and sweetness. My hubby enjoyed their chocolate topped with shredded coconut. Yum. They offer a candy bar and cereal bar as well so if you want something a bit different, grab yourself your milk of choice and enjoy a bowl to satisfy your sweet tooth. We can't wait come back to support this adorable business.

Yelp
Gelato Sweet Spot has a really nice vibe. We went in the week they gave out free yogurt. We arrived around 8:45 and it was very crowded, which says a lot about how popular the place is, but it also meant things felt a little rushed with fast turnover. I enjoyed the yogurt however, the frozen yogurt wasn't very frozen, likely because of how busy they were and the quick pace of service. On the plus side, I did enjoy adding some toppings, which made it more fun. Overall, it's a great spot to check out if you want frozen yogurt in a lively atmosphere, but don't be surprised if the crowd impacts the consistency of some of the treats.

Yelp
Sometimes you walk in to a place for the first time and you're like "Damn, this is my new favorite place". Welcome to Gelato Sweetspot! They really thought of it all! All the work and small details that went in to opening this place is obvious and deserves a round of applause. When you first walk up to the shop, you are greeted by 2 ice cream chairs on the right and a melting ice cream bench on the left... I see you Sweetpot. Nice touch! When you walk inside, you were greeted by a rotunda in the middle of the shop. All the workers are smiling and says hello when you walk in. Now here's the tricky part. What do you do next? Go straight ahead to the candy bar and fill a bag of all your favorite candy? Do you turn to the right to the cereal bar? Or do you turn to the left where the FroYo is? Wait what is that in the back right corner? A "secret" room filled with unique/imported candy, chips, and drinks? Mind blown! Naturally, I ended up doing all 3 I really appreciated all the flavors of FroYo. Had a great selection and the toppings were also on point. The candy bar was also awesome. They literally had my 3 favorite candies: Coca Cola gummies, peach gummies, and cherry gummies! Not to mention those rainbow sour belts! The cereal bar was legit. They have every cereal you'd want. Grab a bowl on the left, fill up the bowl, grab whatever type of milk you want from the refrigerator on the right. I also peaked inside the secret snack room. They had so much stuff in there, it's definitely a kids heaven. Something I thought was unique is the have a refrigerator with a bunch of canned water and flavored sparkling waters that have their business on. I tried the sparkling lime. YUM! Oh... on your way out, don't forget to take a picture for Yelp on the pink circus animal cookie!!! Let me talk real quick about their business model. For their opening week, their FroYo was free. YEAH! FROYO FREE ALL WEEK! It was a zoo when we went in there the first time. So many people wanting FroYo. I personally didn't know it was free when I took my family, but it was a nice treat to find out it was free when we tried to pay. They also had free stickers and key chains they gave our kids and I thought that was a nice gesture. I wanted to acknowledge the workers were working really hard trying to keep everything clean with the amount of people getting desserts. I really appreciated that and wanted to acknowledge that. You definitely have a customer for life. Thanks for doing FroYo right!
google avatar

Corinna W.

Yelp
This is such a cute addition to poway! I love their decor and how appealing it is. Great for kids to have a little froyo party here. Not only is this a frozen yogurt spot but they also have a cereal bar. They sell candy and Asian candy and snacks too. They have a room dedicated just for Asian treats. So cool. They had a soft opening and gave the community free froyo with toppings, gave away sparkling water for a week! So generous, I mean who does that anymore? Come support this new business.!
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
Super cool froyo/gelato spot that opened up! The price is 75 cents an ounce. Everything is pink and it feels like entering candy land! The soft serve is nothing special to me but we liked the interior. They also have a snack room that we felt had some fun options but a little pricey. The topping bar had repetitive options and some of them were not well stocked. For example cheesecake was pretty empty and the remaining pieces were all smushed into a paste. The spoons looked like they needed a good wiping down too. Not a bad spot but wouldn't be my first pick!
google avatar

Aurianna B.

Yelp
We saw the signs during the grand opening and decided to stop in. The place was a mad house because who doesn't like free gelato? Even though it was busy the shop was clean and well stocked. They have a wide variety of toppings to choose from. We've been back since then with my daughter's softball team and noticed some of the flavors had changed. I like that they have different options. Would be really cool if we see some seasonal holiday flavors come out ! Overall, great shop and location. Looking forward to stopping in more with the family.
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
An explosion of bright and neon pink infused with sweet treats. It's sort of like if Willy Wonka set up shop in Vegas. It's probably not bad for business that it's directly across the shopping center from a kid's swim school either. More gelato is never a bad thing and this is welcomed addition
google avatar

Noelle B.

Yelp
Went here for the first with my husband on Halloween night. Seeing that it was Halloween the place was very quiet so we had all the time and space to check out every little nook and cranny. There are some fun photo op spots and an entire corner with fun and different candies. Also loved the long cereal bad on the wall. The gelato reminded me of other frozen yogurt places but they did have some more exotic and unusual flavors. I'll definitely visit again.
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
Signage states they're open until 10pm but when we arrived at 5:17pm we found LOTS of people outside trying to open the door only to find it locked. There was an employee inside sweeping and people were trying to get her attention and she made sure to avoid eye contact and pretend she didn't hear the knocking and people asking "are you open?" Very disappointing, could've at least made a sign explaining why they were closed early to avoid the confusion. Poor management
google avatar

Keith C.

Yelp
Large, clean, and well-spaced self-serve shop with a full wall of yogurt dispensing machines, two topping carts, and a separate candy room. Seating is ample: window bar with high stools, low tables with plastic chairs, and two padded bench areas. The pink-and-white décor (cow mascot, cloud lights) gives it a bright, family-friendly look. There were 12 flavors on my visit, clearly labeled--LF/NF options and several gluten-free. Pricing is by weight; even the "small" yields a generous portion. I had Stok Cold Brew Coffee Gelato (best of the bunch--true coffee flavor, not overly sweet), Country Vanilla (clean, balanced), and Pumpkin (seasonal, gently spiced, very tasty). Toppings were fresh and varied; I added chocolate pieces, peanut-butter chips, graham bits, Oreo crumble, and a few mini marshmallows. Staff were friendly and answered questions readily.
google avatar

Sunny S.

Yelp
Everything was covered when they decided to create this store. Gelato and toppings are amazing. Service was excellent and very friendly. The ambiance is fun - like going into a theme park store. It's serve yourself, so you can mix and taste! very clean, and the staff is on top of cleaning (for those of us who are still covid germ freaks). It's a must go place! I live in RB, but the gelato is so awesome, it's worth the 15 min commute. Plus they opened a new Trader Joe's just a couple of blocks away! Win win!

Kei L.

Yelp
What a cool place! Took the grandkids this afternoon and we all loved it. Frozen yogurt, gelato, dozens of toppings and a candy room to boot! The atmosphere was fun and festive and was the cherry on top of the whole experience. I hope people will support this business and keep it in Poway. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Desiree P.

Yelp
You sure can notice the spot from the street, a major pink site. They have a few cute picture perfect spots in the building and out at the doors! One thing to note - not gelato but frozen yogurt spot, the company's name is "Gelato Sweetspot". The frozen yogurt flavors rage from Vanilla to even apple pie! They have a secret room towards the back with sweets, chips, & even weird sodas like a bacon soda! You wont find more topping options elsewhere, although sort of oddly spread out in the store - sauces, cookies, candy and even a wall of cereal to add some crunch to your bowl!
google avatar

Charles K.

Yelp
Great toppings and nice setting. The prices are high but the offering is better than most in the same space at comparable price. I will be back

Yelp
Really fun place! There is a good photo op place with a giant animal cracker. Lots of toppings. I loved the secret door of international foods.
google avatar

brianna R.

Yelp
It's a very cute spot. But it's just frozen yogurt and some cool other candy. I wish they have more fruit toppings. I love peanut butter frozen yogurt and this one did not taste good. Almost tasted like it was bad. The chocolate was good and my husband likes the pistachio flavor.
google avatar

Carol C.

Yelp
Very clean and spacious, best part for us was the original tart flavor. It's very creamy and we love the consistency! LOTS of topping choices as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a great vibe. Maddox was very helpful since it was our first time. Froyo was super tasty and the secret snack room was so cool. 10/10 would recommend!

Yelp
Wow! What a cute sweet spot in Poway! Located right across the Poway Library on Poway Rd. Staff are welcoming and the place is pinky sweet!! Look out for the extra room that sells goodies (candies, chips, etc) from different countries. Add to that the gelato is pretty sweet too!
google avatar

Yelp
Free Fro Yo and toppings at Gand Opening Week. Free key chains and stickers. Awesome. Delish. Thank you for the Free Fro Yo. Yum.

Yelp
I'm officially obsessed with this new frozen yogurt spot. The yogurt itself? Incredible. It's super smooth and creamy! You know when you take a bite and just instantly think, "I could eat this every day"? That's how good it is. The texture is spot-on, and you can tell it's made with care. But here's the real kicker: they've got a whole room of snacks from around the world, that takes everything to a whole new level. Chips, chocolate, all sorts of fun candies you name it! From international treats you won't find anywhere else to a full-on cereal and candy bar where you can top your froyo with all your favorite nostalgic goodies, let me tell you you're not gonna want to miss out. Seriously, there's something about being able to add your childhood favorite snacks to your froyo that makes it feel like a fun, elevated experience every time. The vibe is super chill, the staff is super friendly and welcoming, and it's just the perfect place to treat yourself--whether you're flying solo or hanging out with friends and family. If you're a frozen yogurt fan or just love sweet treats, this place is a must-try!!

Yelp
Cute frozen yogurt place with good yogurt and fresh decor. Really nice and friendly staff as well. they also have candy including Swedish ones for a reasonable price.

Yelp
The froyo was great, and the shop had a really nice interior and welcoming ambiance that made it fun for the kids. The staff was genuinely friendly and made the whole experience feel warm and easy.

Yelp
Very tasty and unusual ice cream. I especially love the milk chocolate and jelly flavors and the balls.

Yelp
I went to the soft open today and it was great. Although there were a lot of people, the employees were greeting guests, cleaning and answering questions. They were also refilling the gelatos and toppings frequently. The parking is small, but there were more parking in the back side. The store itself was very pretty and colorful, very welcoming. Overall I would definitely go back to this place to have my dessert!

Amanda M.

Yelp
We came here a couple times during Gelato sweetshop's weeklong free froyo promo. The first time we came it wasn't too crazy, the froyo was delicious and there were a good variety of flavors and mix-ins - including pomegranate raspberry, which I used to drive to yogurt heaven in scripps ranch for. The stafff was very welcoming and friendly. By the end of the week, news had spread about the free froyo and the place was pretty packed, mix-ins were limited, and people were going a little crazy, over-filling bowls and spilling all over the floors. Through it all the staff were still so kind and friendly. I feell like I would have been frustrated with the chaos and mess by day five, but the workers never let on once that they were annoyed and smiled through it all. Props to them! The ambiance is cute and my kids enjoyed their time here. This will definintely be our new froyo spot from now on.
google avatar

Nikki L.

Yelp
The yogurt is no worse or better than other frozen yogurt places nearby like In the Mix or Yogurt Heaven. They do have more candy and cereal available as toppings, but unfortunately no fresh fruit as the other places do. When we went, one of the flavors was runny and not working (peach). When my daughter went on a different day, they were out of Tart flavor and the place was visibly untidy on floors and counters. It's a new place so they may not yet have sorted how to keep the place clean amidst children serving themselves. Personally I found the interior aggressively fushia, with insufficient seating, and the self serve topping area looked like a health hazard. I will not be back. The "secret" candy room was wide open to all and had less interesting items than World Market.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Gelato Sweet Spot is a family experience that you have to try. Incredible flavors, toppings galore and a cereal wall that will keep everybody happy. Grab one of their large bowls and just have whatever your mix of cereal is with some milk or use it for toppings on your FroYo. All the employees that I met were super friendly and keeping everything clean. I don't live in Poway but have gone there 3 times already.

Ashley R.

Yelp
Had an amazing experience at Gelato Sweetspot in Poway. We went for the grand opening week and they were giving away free yogurt and toppings which is exceptionally generous. The staff was so friendly and welcoming and despite it being extremely busy due to it being the grand opening the store was so clean. They have cute seating areas inside and out. You can buy candy and treats as well. We will definitely be back! **some people on here are leaving poor ratings for them closing early for running out of FREE Ice cream which is some crazy behavior. Let's grow up and realize things run out when they are free and use our common sense that that is why the closed instead of crying about how there was no sign**

A H.

Yelp
My daughter went & loved it! Such fun decor & yummy treats Love this addition to our town! To those complaining that they closed early, I believe they ran out of product due to giving away FREE ice cream to the community, amazing for a small business to do!

Yelp
This place just opened up down the street from my house. I've heard such good things about it, and I knew I had to stop by and check it out. First, I absolutely loved the seating that they had. You could grab a frozen yogurt or a treat, and sit outside in these cute chairs. Absolutely adorable! As soon as my daughter and I entered, we were hit with pink. It seemed like everything was pink, and I was in heaven! (pink happens to be my favorite color) We were greeted by staff. I apologize that I didn't catch their names, but they were seriously so sweet! My daughter thinks that the girl that was working there, her name is Genevieve? I could be wrong, but she was so sweet, as were the boys working. Right away they were welcoming, and showed us the cool room that has a whole bunch of Different snacks that were pretty cool. They had a refrigerator with different kind of beverages as well. We will definitely be back! Thank you so much for your kindness, your hospitality, and just overall your awesomeness!

Yelp
Updating my review. I went when they were open. Lots of flavors, free this week. However, 75 cents an ounce seems expensive I guess we'll see how it goes!

Yelp
This is the best yogurt in San Diego, amazing service, very clean and so many new things to try. I love the old school candy too. My family loves the cereal bar! Top notch... I will be back soon. I couldn't believe the yogurt is free until Friday. Wow!!!

Yelp
First of all, I was expecting gelato. Not yogurt. You wouldn't open a taco shop and only sell hamburgers would you? If you name your business Gelato, it's a good idea to sell some. This place had one flavor of gelato: cold brew. The yogurt flavors were ok, nothing out of the ordinary. Second of all, there are no nuts for toppings. I don't want candy on my tart yogurt. Third of all, what's with the wall of cereal and milk? Are they expecting kids to stop in for breakfast? You could definitely eat a gigantic bowl of cereal because their containers are just that-gigantic. On a more positive note (I guess), the space is huge, and the decor is shades of bubblegum pink. There is a cute pink corner with an animal cookie carousel elephant for Instagramers. And the teenagers working there are friendly and helpful. But sorry, In the Mix for the win.

Yelp
First of all, it is not Gelato as the title of their store is named. There is nothing resembling gelato here. It is frozen yogurt. Secondly, the flavor was meh and our bowls melted to liquid way too quickly which gave the impression that they have watered it down somehow. Third, 1/2 of the toppings seemed to be missing in the topping bar and they had too many repeats of the same add-ons. Additionally, a lot of the candy in the bins seemed to be cheaper versions. The coke bottle gummies tasted stale and took me about 5 minutes to chew up. Lastly, the acoustics leave much to be desired and I could barely hear my teen talking to me. Not a fan.
