ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE!! ANGELA, who is apparently a manager here likes to racially profile customers. I’ve shopped at Gelson’s for years and have never been treated in such a way. This was the WORST interaction I’ve ever had.
I visited the store to pick up 3 items, a rotisserie chicken, crackers and hummus (that’s it). I gather the chicken and hold it in my hand, then I go to grab the crackers. Upon entering the cracker aisle, ANGELA is standing in the aisle slightly blocking the way. She takes a odd amount of time to move out the way, but I think nothing of it as I’m on the phone with my wife confirming what crackers she’d like. I proceed to grab the crackers and put them in my personal GELSON’S shopping bag, as I always do in multiple Gelson’s in the LA area. Soon as I drop the crackers in my bag, Angela pops up stating, “Hey, it’s against company policy to shop with that bag!”. I explain, I’ve shopped using the bag before and never once had a problem. She then states in a nasty tone, “you can grab a cart or basket but you can’t use the bag”.
Now, I totally understand that there could be a policy for this and I don’t have a problem with the policy, but at this point she is approaching me as if I’m trying to steal or cause harm to the store and I didn’t appreciate that in the slightest. I leave my box of crackers in my bag and go about my business to finish shopping. ANGELA then proceeds to follow me around the store while on her walkie as if I’ve committed a crime. As this is happening, I spot another manager and ask them if what I’m doing is a problem. They say no and that it’s fine. I was going to just finish shopping, but as ANGELA was still following me i felt so frustrated and appalled I decide not to finish shopping. I hand the items back to her and leave the store immediately.
It’s honestly just a sad and disappointing experience. In hindsight, starting from my first interaction with ANGELA, I know she racially profiled me because I’m a black man and that’s unacceptable. If this store wants to provide the best service to its customers they need to reprimand and most of all educate Angela so that no one else of a similar background has to experience the same thing.
