I went in today and got 2 small tiramisus and both of them were sour. Also the whipped cream on top was super firm so they absolutely gave me items that were a week or two old. I was loyal to the Wayne location but I’ll never go back here. They could have seriously made somebody sick and they wasted my money.

My boyfriend got my birthday cake here and wow. Not only did it look even better than the inspiration pictures we sent, but it tasted amazing. It was the highlight of the party. Would highly recommend

Delicious pastries, and biscotti. We got it home and warmed up a bit in microwave and it elevated the taste quiet and bit. Their canoli is the best... The best you can ever have. I have had many and it beats Mikes in Boston.

This place is amazing! I came here to get some cannoli’s for a godfather movie weekend. And Josie helped me out. She was great and enthusiastic. Recommended some other pastries. And wrapped everything up nicely! Thanks Josie! I will be back.

I’ve been a loyal customer of Gencarelli’s for years, ordering many custom cakes for my family, but this last experience was truly disappointing. I ordered a simple cake with specific colors and even paid extra to make it special for my husband’s first birthday after his mother’s passing. Instead, the cake had colors I specifically asked to change, and when I arrived to pick it up, their system showed I hadn’t paid—even though I had the receipt and the charge on my card. Everyone has an off day, but the customer service was subpar and the final product did not match what I requested. Sadly, this experience makes me think twice before ordering from Gencarelli’s again.

Over 15 years ago a friend brought this chocolate hazelnut mousse cake over for dessert. Now whenever we're in Jersey we'll go out of our way to get it. We've tried other pastries/cakes from this bakery, but hands down this is the BEST! We prefer the Bloomfield location over Wayne for service and quality. Recommend reserving cake ahead of time because we went once and they were sold out

I forgot the name of the cake I purchased, but it was delicious. Fluffy sponge cake paired with a light vanilla cream and sweet, fresh strawberries on top! The worker behind the counter helped guide me on what cake to purchase. Will be back in the near future!

I was able to have one of their cakes that was being served at an engagement party. I did not actually attend this establishment, but it seems like they have a number of baked goods to choose from. The black and white cake was tried. It was a chocolate and white cake with a chocolate pudding filling as well as a chocolate icing. There were white cake crumbs around the side as well. It was also customized, which was nicely presented. The cake itself was a standard and normal cake, not dry, but not moist either. The icing was tasty while the pudding filing made for a refreshing treat. Will I go back? I would head there.

Good pastries but their staff at Bloomfield are super rude hence I avoid them! Lots of other bakeries in the area no loss!

My wife told me we needed to go get some bread to go with dinner, so I'm thinking we're just going to the local store but my wife brought me here. Bread was fresh and absolutely delicious. You got to get the good stuff when having a nice Ziti dinner on a Sunday. They also have every goodie you can imagine. Yes, I'll admit it. We left with a strawberry shortcake and one of those fruit custard cups as well. Easily could've went with a cannoli cake or the 7 layer cookies. Service was excellent. The girl that helped us was very helpful. We got one of those large round Italian breads and they'll slice it for you as well. Looking forward to going back to try some of their other treats.

If I'm bringing desert, this is where it's coming from. This small bakery is always busy. The pastries, cakes and cookies never disappoint. My favorite is the strawberry shortcake. I could eat the entire cake alone but they save me from myself. They offer mini cakes.

Ordered a New York style cheesecake with fresh strawberries... nothing short of phenomenal! The cheesecake was rich and creamy... strawberries fresh and sweet ... and the graham cracker crust which was easily 1/4 inch thick WOW! Also scooped some Italian Rainbow Cookies... fresh and delicious. Staff was very friendly and helpful! Would highly recommend. Can't wait to go back and try some more goodies!

Love the hazelnut mousse cake. Everything in this bakery tastes fresh also! I also got a cheesecake and it was sooo creamy!

Negative thing first... please use bigger boxes instead of cramming the desserts in (especially the more delicate mini cakes made of mousse). We bought $20 worth of mini desserts and the girl handed us a suspiciously small box. In the car we opened it to makes sure all 5 were in there... the pretty strawberry mousse was crammed on its side, and strawberry shortcake was squashed in a corner. That one was a ball when we took it out... At least this was just for our family, but if we were gifting this to someone (as we sometimes do) this would be embarrassing! The desserts were still delicious, as malformed as some of them were. If you care about the presentation, I'd be wary and tell them to use a roomier box. They would get 5 stars for great taste and selection, one star docked for this issue. (Note: we never encountered this problem in the Wayne location)

where are used to come here almost once a week for the pastries and have ordered many cakes. Not sure what happened. The last couple of times we received stale items. And when I called to complain the manager had a little bit of an attitude. i'm sorry, but you need to check the custard in your items that have been sitting for more than two days when we got home, the custard was rancid Again, will you still love this bakery haven't been there in a while now because of the last two times things were spoiled and rotten. Everybody knows that custard should be light and a light color yellow and when we got them home, they were a dark colored yellow and almost hardened, and the texture and tasted bad. Sorry just being honest you need to take things out of the display that are old.

This is a traditional Italian bakery. Lots of great bread, cakes and patisseries. They also have a small selection of Italian stuff like pasta sauces etc.. they have a small parking lot which is good. The best thing I like of this place is the service. The staff is friendly and helpful.

Gencarelli's Bakery is Truly the Best!! They made this beautiful cake for my mother and her Twin sister for their 80th Birthday. It truly exceeded my expectations and was amazing! Everyone loved it!!! Thank you so much Gencarelli's for making this day even more special with this custom cake made just for us!!!

Whenever I'm in Montclair or Bloomfield area, I love stopping by Gencarelli's to get sweets! I got the rainbow cake that reminds me of spumoni cookies, strawberry shortcake, a pound of cookies, chocolate pound cake and macaroons!! Get me a cup of tea, and I'm good!! Tonight, we got there just about a quarter to their closing time. I don't think the staff was happy to see people walking in so close to closing, but so glad I made it!

I was so very disappointed by the Oreo cake I purchased from Gencarelli's on 10-11. This is my wife's actual birthday. I purchased it for her birthday. The Oreo cookies and the cake were very stale. I purchased the cake at 4:30pm and went straight to my apt in Bloomfield which is a 5 min ride and placed in the fridge. She didn't eat her piece as it was very stale. No one did to be honest. It was thrown out.

I've been her MANY times over the past few months and have enjoyed everything! Their vanilla and chocolate cake is moist and the right amount of sweet, their cannoli's are heavenly, and don't even get me started on their Italian cookie selection *chef's kiss* (I could eat an entire 1lb box myself). The majority of the time, their Lobster tails are beautifully crispy on the outside and the light creamy filling is excellent, but there have been one or two times where the lobster tails are a little bit soft and soggy likely from being filled for a while. I also find that their doughnuts can sometimes be tough/ over-kneaded and stale. Overall, I would recommend this place if you're assigned dessert to a dinner party or you're just in the mood for a sweet treat!

Customer for years -- I am very disappointed..I got my favorite cake Tiramisu and see the pictures what I found.. Notifying them and they didn't' care . Very Bad ..

I ordered a small wedding cake with Strawberry filling and bananas and banana filing. There were no bananas. I was highly disappointed! That was a very important event for me. I can't trust them with my cake the next time.

Reliable bakery and good products. Good selection of both Italian and traditional baked goods and excellent bread especially the panella. Highly recommend the brownies and individual cheesecakes and tiramisu.

We got a cake from Gencarelli's for my sister's bridal shower and it was very yummy! It was vanilla cake with a filling of cannoli cream, fresh strawberries and mini chocolate chips. The frosting was buttercream. The only reason I didn't give a full 5 stars is because I wasn't so much a fan of the frosting. I've had buttercream before from other bakeries and really liked it, but I ended up leaving the icing from the leftover slices I ate the following day and not eating any of it. But the cake and filling were delicious! This place was recommended to us as the place to get the cake for my sister's shower and they did not disappoint. The design was beautiful as well.

I have been eating pastries and cakes from here for years from family gatherings but I have never been in person to the actual store. I ordered 2 of their famous ferre rochier cake . So delicious and one of my absolute favorites. They have such a great selection of pastries, cakes , breads so hard to not walk in there and not want to buy the whole store . I definitely didn't mind the 45 min ride to pick up my order because that's how good it is. It's definitely known around jersey so if you haven't given it a try I suggest you do.

Love this bakery! The staff if always so friendly and very helpful. The prices are fair. Love the wide variety of pastries. The hardest part is trying to figure out what to choose because it all looks so tasty. I've been very pleased with everything we have tried so far. The parking lot gets a little crazy when it's busy so that can be a pain so go during off hours!

Pastries, cakes everything is great. I wish they had a more official coffee bar. That'd be amazing. This area desperately needs one that's not a Starbucks. Only issue-why is the sales person glaring at me the whole time I am in there. Always with my child too. I'm not a thug. I'd say been there 2x in a month. The same outright hostile interaction. I still smile, place my order and leave. My daughter is old enough to notice. Just a note God made everybody. Leave personal bias at the door. Money is green no matter who holds it.

Any time it's someone's birthday or it's a special occasion, I know I can always count on Gencarelli's to come through with that amazing hazelnut mousse cake! It is literally eating a ginormous Ferrero Rocher cake. You really can't go wrong - everyone LOVES it. I typically don't have a sweet tooth but I remember the first time I had the cake at my friend's birthday, I was sharing the slice with someone else (which I usually do) but decided I needed my own piece because it's just so darn good. The cakes come in different sizes but the generic one in the display is approximately $25 which is a good deal! All their desserts are really good, I'm also a huge fan of the pistachio mousse cake as well but they only sell those in the single serve size. Parking can be a bit tough especially on the weekends (parking is much easier in the Wayne one but I still think the pastries are better here). Definitely call in advance to ensure they have what you need. Always buy a box of assorted pastries on the side - try as many as you can, it's so good :) The one thing I do wish they had here was a punch card for the amount of cakes I've bought because that would be really nice haha. Although the lines can be long, it moves very quick. Staff here is very friendly!

what happened?? the rolls here used to be really good..then last week i bought a variation and they tasted like supermarket rolls! the hard rolls (Italian rolls) had no taste and had soft crust instead of crispy and the Kaiser rolls were stale and the little round rolls looked and tasted like hamburger rolls you'd buy in the supermarket. what a disappointment..is there a new baker or something?

Very disappointed with this cake. I called in and had a custom made strawberry shortcake with fresh strawberries and as you can see in the picture there were only a couple of strawberry's. I don't ever do reviews but I had to do this one. For what you pay and the high quality products this bakery makes daily this one didn't make the cut. It has been a tradition to get a gencarellis cake for a birthday and I don't want to stop that tradition but if you can't get what you asked for than maybe it will be time to stop and find another place. I hope this reviews gets to someone who can change that and get back to the high quality roots.

The hazelnut moose cake is a fam favorite here.. reminiscent of ferrero rocher chocolates ...they also sell a variety of pastas, olive oils and sauces.. lots of cakes, pastries, and cookies to choose from !

So I've been back a couple of times since my first visit there and I feel like I make a trip every couple of weeks. I love their carrot cake and so does everyone I get it for. I've even tried some of their seasonal stuff like the peppermint mousse and the pumpkin mousse. The milk chocolate mousse is good for chocolate fans. I'm glad these come small cause I easily get overwhelmed with the sweetness. I still recommend this place to everyone cause of the quality you get for the price. I will definitely be back in a couple of weeks!

The cannoli cream is the best you will find in any bakery! And the cookies are unique.

When there's a special occasion to celebrate, it calls for a special cake. For my wife, Meryl's 65th Birthday, the best option in Essex County is definitely Gencarelli's. It's hard to gauge the scale of this beauty from the photo, but it's actually designed to serve 25-30 people. The custom options I chose included black & white layer cake, cannolIi cream, fresh strawberry filling, and whipped cream icing. All I can say is that this dessert tasted even better than it looked!

My significant other and I have been long time patrons of this bakery and have never been disappointed. Every year we buy our birthday cakes here. Some of our favorites: 1. Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake. 2. Oreo cake. 3. Chocolate Fudge. 4. Canoli. Other favorites at other times of the year include: pound cake and French apple pie. The staff are always friendly and will go out of their way to help you choose exactly what you need for any occasion. The manager greets us by name and always asks how we are doing. This is how a business should be run!

As a family, we've always looked to support small and local businesses. We've been loyal Gencarelli's customers for the past 15 years even though about 10 years ago I got food poisoning from their Tiramisu. Regardless, we decided to still visit and purchase from this establishment as it was local. Unfortunately, after today, we will never visit this place again or recommend it to anyone if they ask as many people do. My mom and I went in this morning looking to purchase some pastries along will rolls and bread. I got married this weekend and unfortunately the cake box that the top tier of our wedding cake was in (which we were going to freeze for our one year anniversary) got wet. We explained this to the employee at Gencarelli's and asked if there was anyway we could purchase a small cake box from them (not get it for free, but purchase). After the rudeness that ensued, the service member went to ask the manager supposedly or whoever it was. Unfortunately the answer was still no. They would not allow us to purchase a box from them for our cake even after 15 years of supporting them as a local business so that we could wrap our cake properly to freeze it. The only way we were told that they'd give us a box is if we bought one of their cakes. (We offered to pay $5 just for 1 box). Such a shame, we now regret ever supporting this establishment and moving forward will never visit or recommend it to anyone who asks. Yes it was just a box, but we didn't want it for free. It would have helped us tremendously and allowed us to spend more time with our parents before having to leave. Instead, we wasted 2 hours driving around looking for a box, which we did find. Long story short, don't visit or support this business. The only thing they care about is money so don't let them fool you to think that they care about the local community at all. We learned the hard way after 15 years of supporting them. Should have stopped visiting them ever since I got food poisoning from their Tiramisu.

I love this bakery! I've been looking for months for a place that makes french apple pies. Gencarelli's has them and a bunch of other delicious items. The employees are awesome as well. I always feel welcomed when I go in. They are patient and have knowledge about the items they are selling.

My favorites: almond cookies, hazelnut mousse cake, strawberry cheesecake, fruit pie, mini cannolis, carrot cake... and more !! Today I tried their lobster tail... creamy inside and perfectly crisp and flakey outside!

NOPE NOPE AND NOPE!!!!!! The SADDEST thing about this place is the manager is as RUDE as the younger girls that look like they're forced to be there. Emma for some reason handed me a bag of broken cookies HUH????? And when I tried to ask her why, she looked at me, ignored me, and turned around. So I walk up to the other side towards the manager and that's when she comes running, saying "they must of broken up when I put it down" trying to cover her ass. HUH???? Just magically broken up by itself???? So I communicate to the manager how I don't understand why she's treating me like that and the manager literally says "did you get your cookies?" And I tell her yes and literally looks at me and says "kay" No apologies, no I'll speak to her, nothing. I get that you guys are both MISERABLE at your job, but don't take that shit out on me, I just want some goddamn cookies, for fucks sake.

The gold standard for cannoli's. I drive from Bergen County just to get some. The other pastries are awesome too! The bread as well!

I bought their carrot cake for my daughter's birthday and it was terrible. It was overloaded with cream cheese and tasted like a box cake mix. It is definitely not worth $28. We all took a bite and threw the rest away. I will be returning to baking Grace in Hawthorne. Don't waste your money at this terrible bakery.

Mmm mmm good. I was in the area and wanted to satisfy my sweet tooth and found great luck here. They have a big variety of individual sweets and lots of cakes if you need something for an occasion. The prices are also very reasonable. I ended up with a chocolate muffin which was super moist and also only a dollar and change. I could see myself getting addicted to this place for breakfast! The staff was also super friendly and helpful. My only complaint is nothing is labeled. The staff was willing to answer my questions, but it was a little crowded, so I don't want to waste time saying "what's that? how much is that? What flavors does this come in?" If they had little labels then I think it would be much more efficient if people could peruse and then approached the counter when they knew what the want. Or maybe most people are frequent enough to know what the want, but I prefer labels on the items or a sign indicating prices. Overall, this is a place to be with good hours and even if you come in the evening, things taste fresh and moist. Definitely an amazing bakery.

Been in a few times to get a a couple boxes of assorted pastries. Reasonably priced ($2-$3 each) and they were all a hit. My personal favorites are the fruit tarts and tres leches cake, but pretty much everything has been good. Featured a variety of creative cakes which I hope to try. Pretty helpful and friendly staff. They do have their own parking which is nice. Since I've only come during COVID, I do wish they updated their website with online ordering rather than calling and picking up since you don't really know what they have, how much it is, etc.

We ended up in Bloomfield for a funeral. We drove past Gencarelli's looking for somewhere else to eat and immediately stopped. They had social distancing measures in place so we felt comfortable waiting and purchasing goods from there. Even though they were closing early because it was a Sunday, they still helped us because we were in line. As soon as we came inside the store they locked the doors tho so no one else could come in lol. We focused on the cakes and pies and complete missed the other side of the store with the breads and cookies! But everything looked amazing. We ended up with German chocolate cake squares (tasted soooo good), cannolis (also delicious), key lime and chocolate mousse (not as tasty), and carrot cake slice (very very good). The customer service was definitely on point! Everyone was very friendly and answered all of our questions about food choices, even though they were closed. Next time we are in NJ, we'll definitely be back
