Most things are worth trying at least once, although I flinch when I see the price of these filled donuts. People tend to rave about General Porpoise's other locations which sparked my curiosity years ago, and I've always been intrigued to find out what makes them so special. We had tried to grab donuts from this location before, but they tend to sell out before noon. On our second attempt, we visited around 10:30A on a Sunday, and they still had the full selection to choose from.
Among the four of us, we selected the Vanilla Custard and Lemon Curd, although other options of the day were Chocolate Marshmallow, Salted Caramel and Blood Orange. I tried only the Vanilla Custard and enjoyed it. The cream was very light, the ideal sweetness and even had specks of real vanilla bean. The donut itself was fluffy and coated in granulated sugar for a little extra texture. If it wasn't for the sugar coating, the dough would have been pretty plain. I didn't notice this in particular, but my sister stated that her donut was on the oily side. My mom was the only one to taste the Lemon Curd. She was pretty impressed about the tartness of the lemon, but just wished the filling resembled a jam instead of a cream.
Since last year, the price per donut has increased a full dollar. They used to be $4.00 each, but now they are $5.00 per piece, which is extremely overpriced for what you receive. In general, I can't think of any normal sized donut that would be worth $5 for that matter. Four donuts came to $22 including tax. They should at least have an option to purchase a half or full dozen at a discounted set price.
Bottom line: I hate to sound harsh, but from what I saw and tasted, there isn't anything that sets these apart from other filled donuts. Although we liked them, the outrageous pricing makes this a one-and-done for us.
