Last year during my summer vacation I spent a few days over the weekend in Amsterdam. It was the 2nd time I had stayed in the area near Oosterpark, and the 1st time I stayed at The Generator hostel.
It's an absolutely beautiful, serene place. The hostel is a very large, spacious building. It's well staffed with great people, has an excellent small restaurant, very clean, and very well priced.
So of course this year, this summer, I went there again. And I wasn't disappointed. Lots of friendly people there to meet, fellow travelers.
Except late night before I was to leave the next day the worst thing possible happened. I left my iPhone accidentally unattended and someone took it. It was my work phone, too, very secure, and it contained all my travel documents. I was going to be in a bit of trouble from my job. It was the kind of stupid thing that could ruin the whole trip.
It was late and most of the hostel was closed. I told one of the staff what happened. They did their very best to help me. They called the police who arrived quite quickly. I never expected to be helped, but I was wrong. I gave the police the "Find my phone" information where we could see in real time with their laptops where it was.
The Amsterdam police was able to locate the person who took it, but when the guy saw the police he tossed the phone into a trash can. The police did the "Ring phone" thing and heard it. Not long after they returned and gave me my phone back.
It was like a miracle, and would never have happened if the staff hadn't been so wonderful, and police, too.
It's kind of a scam where some people steal phones, then when somebody calls it they answer and say they bought it for 100€ and then ask for that amount as a ransom to get it back.
In any case, as a hostel The Generator gets 5 stars from me in all categories, especially the kindness and helpfulness of the staff. I'm planning to go there again next summer.
