Traveling and Want to Eat and Drink Like a Local? Go to the Hostel Bar | Eater

"Housed in a refurbished zoological university building, this hostel bar is a lively Saturday-afternoon draw for families and Erasmus students who gather for pints. The setting includes an auditorium-style bar and a club that once served as the boiler room, and the drink list highlights local favorites like a frosty Brouwerij ’t IJ or a crisp Grolsch, creating a relaxed-but-buzzy neighborhood vibe." - Mackenzie Filson

Great hostel, little expensive but overall one of the best hostels I've stayed in. Actual showers even if the floor in the bathroom was slightly flooded. But it was nice to have an actually shower room with a nice private feeling to it. The pods were amazing. However, a little difficult to climb into as the ladder was to the side of the door. Overall fantastic hostel. One of the better ones I've ever stayed in. Very clean, good vibes, positive atmosphere. Right on the tram line that takes you into town. Nice park and lake outside. Family, group, youth, old friendly.....everyone seemed very welcomed.

I've stayed here several times over the last few years, and each time had an excellent experience. The location is a little out from central Amsterdam, but easily accessible via public transport. The property is clean, tidy and secure, with a good cafe/bar that serves excellent food. The staff have always been excellent - very friendly and helpful. On each visit here I've chosen to stay in one of the pods, which is a fun experience. They are comfortable, and a secure. I would definitely recommend this as a place to stay, and I hope to visiting again very soon.

We stayed twice at Generator Amsterdam this month and had two very different experiences. Our first stay (4–6 Aug in a 4-bed dorm) was great – the room was comfortable, and the lady at check-in was warm and even gave us free beer coupons for my birthday, which made it special. But our second stay (13–15 Aug in a 6-bed dorm) was a complete disappointment. The room was tiny compared to the 4-bed, lockers were small, and there was absolutely no space for luggage. Beds were stacked three high – the top one almost 10ft up – making it claustrophobic and unsafe. Bathrooms were unclean. When we shared feedback at reception, the staff response was shockingly rude. A manager (lady with a neck tattoo) dismissed us by “teaching how hotels work” instead of helping, and another staff member (Asian woman with glasses) showed a take-it-or-leave-it attitude. When we asked about changing rooms, they demanded we pay double the amount we had already paid, justifying it as a “last-minute booking” due to high demand. This was humiliating, unprofessional, and left us extremely disappointed. From a great first stay to a pathetic second one – I would never recommend booking a 6-bed dorm here.

The shared rooms of 6 are kinda small but overall good. The location is clean, modern, and gives a good vibe to the overall experience. Just quite away from the center but you can get a direct tram connection just across the street.

In my 10 months of travel, this is by far the WORST hostel I have ever been to. All this place cares about is sucking every dollar out of you that they can. You want to drop off your bags early? You have to pay for it. You want a towel? Better cough up 7 euros. You want to check in on time? “Sorry, your room is not ready.” By the time I was able to check in, it was an extra 45 minutes past the actual check in time. When I got to my room, I had to make my own bed (god forbid they make the beds, it’s not like I’m paying 60 euros a night for a dorm room), the shower was COVERED in hair (the room clearly had not been cleaned), and the beds are stacked three beds high with very little space in the room. This hostel is not even close to being worth the money and if you’re interested in this area, there’s better hostels nearby.

Generator has a perfect location coupled with an imperfect suite of amenities. You really can’t beat walking out to Oosterpark from your hotel room. The view is incredible. It’s nice that the hotel has a cafe, and the auditorium is also a really nice feature for those coworking or reading or whatever. Too bad their WiFi was sluggish!||We stayed in the deluxe king room (250) which is located right on the corner of the building and has floor-to-ceiling views of the park. The pros: it’s a well-appointed room with everything you need and nothing you don’t. The cons: really poor insulation. The AC is dysfunctional and the curtains need to be closed all day in the summer in order to cool the room. Unfortunately, even with that, the room was so hot in the daytime, and we got to enjoy none of the view. ||I’d recommend this resoundingly for most types of travelers based on the location alone. The hotel is cute, and for our six nights, it was pretty much what we needed.

The space is really good, it was my first time booking a hostel and I'm happy with my choose. The people are nice, the woman in reception spoke with me in my language (Portuguese) and was very polite! The room is a little bit small but the beds are very comfortable. The breakfast was also very good. I recommend it.

Google
such a nice hostel to stay in! especially as a first time hostel-goer. the staff are all really friendly and helpful. i stayed in a room with 6 beds and it had its own shower room and toilet. located in a park close to transport that can get you anywhere in the city!

Yelp
Generator was the perfect solution for our party of five European trip. Being in Amsterdam for New Year's Eve, all of the hotels were outrageously expensive, but the six person private suite was reasonably priced and perfectly met our needs. Somehow they keep it lively in the common areas and quiet in the sleeping areas. The staff are super friendly ... from the front desk crew to the cleaning folks to the bar staff. Tati and Luna have been especially helpful! If we are lucky enough to return to Amsterdam, we will definitely stay at generator again.

Yelp
Great hostel to stay at for three nights, stayed in a women's only room and felt safe and comfortable. Room was quiet for the most part. Very pricey but took what we could get in Amsterdam.

Yelp
Where do I begin? They nickel and dime you for everything. Snacks are expensive, have to buy towels, etc. Laundry is a joke. The chef is never in and the time they serve food is not as advertised. Cannot bring food to rooms. Our room was the size of a jail cell for 4 people. Shower didn't drain. My first and last experience ever with the Generator. I have no clue why this place has so many good reviews. If you're considering booking, look into other accommodations.

Yelp
Free breakfast is always a plus! Some roommates can be loud since it's like a cramped dormitory. But otherwise it's in a nice location and has good amenities.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, great staff and good location close to downtown. Five star review - what else?! :-)

Samantha M.

Yelp
The Generator is the best hostel to stay at in Amsterdam! Clean and decently sized rooms, great location, and a cool atmosphere. The staff is also friendly and helpful, especially Nora!

Yelp
Best generator I've stayed at. Took a long time to check in either because they only had 2 people working or their system was slow. Maids come in banging very loud in the room early in the morning but at least that means that it is clean and after weeks in generator hostels this is the first place I've seen clean the rooms. For $70 a night it's nearly worth the money, for double that you could get a hotel alone but then again you're paying double the price.

Yelp
This is definitely a five star hostel. We paid just under 200 bucks for a private room. (It's kind of expensive) That is the price per a night. Pros: -It's fully air conditioned. -wifi is fast - a lot of place to lounge - a private Mac computer in the first floor lounge area - bike rentals - when you walk out of the back door you are literally standing in a beautiful park. - modern decor Cons (really only one con): -the hostel's doors are open 24/7. You don't even need a key to enter the hostel. That's kind of unsafe in my opinion. Overall, this is more like a hotel than a hostel. It's clean and inviting. I highly recommend it for anyone staying in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Yelp
Was sad I only got to stay here one night, but this hostel is great! Modern and lively bar, bed was super comfortable and great size for me (6'5). Breakfast was also amazing, the only downside is it's a bit away from the center of amsterdam. But worth it for the nice luxury feel.

Yelp
Truly an awful experience staying here. I urge, no BEG, you to take your money elsewhere. I'm convinced that all the positive reviews are bots. First of all, it is an expensive hostel that will end up charging you more per night than what is initially stated. Half, if not more, of the amenities that were offered on the website were either closed or out of service during my stay. The staff is very unfriendly and unwelcoming too. Most of them had an attitude every time I would ask a question. The place charges for EVERY SINGLE tiny little thing. It is quite far away from the central part of town too so don't expect to be close to any restaurants or shops. The park that surrounds it is nice, but you are better off visiting it in your own time. Nothing special about staying next to it. Lastly, the room was not clean when I arrived in it! There was dust all around the room and I'm hardly convinced that the bedding was even washed. I got athletes foot from using the shower in my room with bare feet (I am willing to take part of the blame for this), but it makes me believe the shower wasn't even touched in terms of cleaning. I very badly wish I could leave 0 stars. Go elsewhere

Yelp
When your first stay at Generator is good, you have to try it again. So that's what I did. Except, this time, I brought a friend with me. As a part of a 3-week backpacking trip, we started our trip in Amsterdam and Generator was our hostel to be. Although this hostel is a bit out of city center, it is really close stops of several tramlines so getting to the city center is not difficult. It is located next to a beautiful park area and there are a handful of restaurants within a 10 minute walk. The interior of the hostel was modern, warm, and charming.. They have a good café which was our place to be for morning coffee or breakfast. We reserved beds in a room of 4 and our stay was comfortable. We were not bothered by any noise from outside the room. Our room was clean and roommates were friendly. The storage boxed under the bed were life savers. It was nice to pack things away and not worry about taking up too much space in our small room. Each bed had its own wall outlet and light, making it easy to charge your phone or read something in the middle of the night. At the hostel, there is a bar/club where you can get drinks and listen to some music.Since it is a bit further out of the center, if you wanted to hang out and meet people, you could easily do that at this hostel. Lots of people were socializing. Overall, this was a great start to our trip and we had a comfortable stay!

Yelp
This place spoiled me as my first hostel experience. I was backpacking Europe and spent 2.5 weeks in Amsterdam, bouncing around to different neighborhoods/living situations. My last couple days in Amsterdam, I spent at Generator and they were pretty awesome. Good food on-site, with bar and dance club in the basement (yes, I was confused too, but it's actually hoppin in there on the weekends!). I stayed in a 4-bed room with 3 strangers and had no issues, plus the beds were SUPER comfortable. Also, the neighborhood it's in, Amsterdam Oost, I found to be my favorite hood for its diversity, grit, and good food. 1 star off because the staff was accommodating but not really welcoming, but by the end of my trip I started to feel that's how the people are generally in Amsterdam. Also, the place is not really walkable to anything, but if you get a bike you are on top of the world.

Yelp
Last year during my summer vacation I spent a few days over the weekend in Amsterdam. It was the 2nd time I had stayed in the area near Oosterpark, and the 1st time I stayed at The Generator hostel. It's an absolutely beautiful, serene place. The hostel is a very large, spacious building. It's well staffed with great people, has an excellent small restaurant, very clean, and very well priced. So of course this year, this summer, I went there again. And I wasn't disappointed. Lots of friendly people there to meet, fellow travelers. Except late night before I was to leave the next day the worst thing possible happened. I left my iPhone accidentally unattended and someone took it. It was my work phone, too, very secure, and it contained all my travel documents. I was going to be in a bit of trouble from my job. It was the kind of stupid thing that could ruin the whole trip. It was late and most of the hostel was closed. I told one of the staff what happened. They did their very best to help me. They called the police who arrived quite quickly. I never expected to be helped, but I was wrong. I gave the police the "Find my phone" information where we could see in real time with their laptops where it was. The Amsterdam police was able to locate the person who took it, but when the guy saw the police he tossed the phone into a trash can. The police did the "Ring phone" thing and heard it. Not long after they returned and gave me my phone back. It was like a miracle, and would never have happened if the staff hadn't been so wonderful, and police, too. It's kind of a scam where some people steal phones, then when somebody calls it they answer and say they bought it for 100€ and then ask for that amount as a ransom to get it back. In any case, as a hostel The Generator gets 5 stars from me in all categories, especially the kindness and helpfulness of the staff. I'm planning to go there again next summer.

Yelp
Not really walkable to the main canal zone, but an easy tram ride (and right next to Oosterpark, which is beautiful). Generator is a high-end hostel, which is to say that it is new, with a hip design and layout, and has plenty of private rooms if you're willing to pay a little more. Our private room looked out over Oosterpark, and had huge floor to ceiling windows that made it feel a lot bigger than it was. The room itself was small, but clean and functional, and the hostel has a ton of great common areas (both loud and quiet) to hang out in if you need a break from walking around the city. If the word "hostel" turns you off because you're thinking about sketchy backpacker losing, this isn't it, this is much closer to a hip hotel than anything else.

Yelp
As a local it can be a nice place to work. Trying out the food as a burger lover is a must. While working n eating something was crunchy and a little burned. First i didnt pay attention too much because of concentrating on work. But there was something wrong so i inspected the burger and there was a very thick burnt crust on it. The thing is it can happen, but this was so clearly burnt that the chef had to know but still presented that. That kind of attitude makes that this was the last time coming here. What a shame. I didnt feel quite ok afterwards. Good thing was they offered something else but my appetite and taste were gone.

Yelp
Went on a trip to Amsterdam, Paris, and London and this was the accommodation for my time in Amsterdam. This was the first hostel I had ever stayed at and it definitely set the bar high. It was by far the most comfortable place we stayed at. The rooms had great AC (which was wonderful considering Amsterdam is cooler than London and our London hostel lacked AC). Also, the rooms are very small, but very comfortable. The bed was so cozy with crisp white linens and a down alternative blanket. I've stayed in way nice hotels with less comfortable beds. This was like staying in my own bed at home, it was so nice!! Plus there are USB charging ports and little lamps built into the headboards of each bed. This place had a very cool feel with a bar and a cafe inside it, but was also very safe with key cards required to get into the hallway and the room. Only downside is the distance from the city center. It's about a 15min tram or uber ride away from the city center.

Kelley B.

Yelp
No complaints about this place. Almost too comfortable! Super clean, felt like a hotel more than a hostel. Friendly staff, great food at the cafe, close to a beautiful park, public transport, grocery store, and restaurants. Best hostel experience I've had ever.

Daniela C.

Yelp
Really loved this hostel! Modern decoration, a lot of different spaces to be hanging around. Bike rental, very good breakfast and a very centric location. Still be cautious and hide your valuables when you sleep or use a strong lock

Omar A.

Yelp
Facilities were more than great, everything was so clean and tidy but, the staff were not that helping when it comes to a tourist who has no idea how everything works there, it was my first visiting amsterdam and I didnt find that much of a help there and the location was kind of away from most of what you really want to see. But also theres a great park and you can enjoy that but considering I had no luxury of time so it was a burden having to go all the way to the center of the city.

Meredith J R.

Yelp
Let me first say, I was excited to stay in this hostel because of the reviews but none of them seemed to be accurate as I am leaving today from staying here. This place is nice to say the least. The beds were comfy. However, we began our stay as we walked to our room, open the door and it was not cleaned. The beds werent made and there were towels everywhere. Clearly the room wasn't actually ready for us. This hostel is also a scam. You have to pay for everything - towels (they were 5 euro...) fruit!!, black coffee was not complimentary, we had to pay them to watch our bags on our last day, hand soap and other soaps cost money, breakfast was expensive and not enough food. only few workers seemed to be friendly and helpful which was a disappointment. This hostel cost me the same amount of money as a nice hotel in amsterdam and I wish I chose a hotel over this because this place was not worth the money I paid.
