27 Best Hotels in Madrid

"Younger travelers will be glad to know there’s a cool, affordable hostel in Madrid. Generator has a solid location—just off Gran Vía—and plenty of swagger. Solo travelers can share two-, four-, or eight-person rooms with bunk beds. All rooms have hardwood floors and exposed metal accents; double rooms have cushioned headboards and funky design details. Unlike a full-service hotel, some showers are located in hallways; like a full-service hotel, though, there are power and USB ports—and you don't need to pay extra for sheets. There's a lively bar scene (and great views) up on the rooftop terrace. Generator is worth it for the price—and the potential to make new friends. Save your euros for an amazing meal or cool tour."

The 7 Best Hostels in Madrid (Updated 2025)

"Just steps from Gran Vía, this five-story Generator has two bars (one inside, one on the roof) so it’s easy to hang out and meet other travelers; the rooftop terrace even has jacuzzis. The dorm beds are super comfy with thick mattresses and each bed has a reading light, personal shelf, USB ports, outlets, and under-bed lockers. There’s no kitchen but the bars serve food and a filling breakfast is offered for €7.50; I also noted cheap bike rentals and a 10% HostelPass discount, and included it as the Best Hostel for Families on my list." - Matthew Kepnes

Very much loved my stay at Generator. The location is perfect and the rooms are so clean and comfortable. Also love the rooftop bar which has a great atmosphere and is a great way to relax after a lot of exploring. Shout out to Renalyn for looking after me!

Good: great value for money. Everything was nice. Well organized. For 6 we had a private room for 8. Beds clean and great location. Nice terrace. To improve: small maintenance issues. Shower door didn't close properly. Floor carpet almost worn. Note there are no towels, shampoo or soap included with dorm rooms

My stay at this hostel was unfortunately far from what I expected.||Upon arrival, the receptionist didn’t explain anything at all – I wasn’t even told where the bathrooms or elevators were and had to find them myself. The staff in general came across as unfriendly and uninterested in helping guests feel welcome. I felt unwelcome from the very beginning, and the overall atmosphere was cold and impersonal.||There were no hostel-organized activities to explore the city or to socialize, apart from a basic pub crawl. This made it hard to meet other travelers, which is usually one of the main reasons people choose hostels.||There was no kitchen available, which is very inconvenient for budget travelers. The common areas, including the lobby, were small, cramped, and uninviting. The rooftop – which could have been a highlight – was closed all day and only opened at 5 PM, and the hot tubs were out of order.||Our room was missing basic necessities: no toilet paper at times, no privacy curtains on the dorm beds, and no storage or shelves in the showers or near the sinks. Toilets on the ground floor were dirty, the sink was rusty, and there was no place to put toiletries. Also, there was no shampoo, shower gel, or even hand towels provided.||The only real positive thing I can say is that the location is fantastic – central and close to everything. 10/10 for that.||However, the overall experience was disappointing. I felt unwelcome throughout my stay, and the cold, impersonal vibe made it difficult to connect with other travelers. If you’re looking for a warm, social hostel environment, this is definitely not the place. I wouldn’t stay here again.

5-night stay. I'm familiar with the Generator hotel chain. I've stayed in Madrid several times, both in winter and summer. The hostel market in Madrid is extremely competitive. The Generator's strong suit is its terrace and the presence of two jacuzzis.||The problem is that, during my last stays, the jacuzzis were closed. In 2023, 2024, 2025...||I understand technical or hygiene reasons, but when the problem lasts more than a day, it has a real impact on the stay. The customer is not taken into account. Three consecutive years is a lot and difficult to accept as a customer.||My understanding is reaching its limit, especially when there is no commercial compensation. Furthermore, at no point does their website warn about the jacuzzi area being closed. This is dishonest, and I feel ripped off upon arrival.||Either we should have warned them, or we should have removed the photos of the terrace, or they would have appreciated a welcome drink for the trouble.|| Other drawbacks include the lack of a kitchen and curtains at bed level for privacy. If you're alone, the hostel is a commercial factory. Everything costs money, and there are no free activities for socializing or meeting people.||Luckily, the receptionists are friendly and professional. The room is clean and air-conditioned.

We did a great sangria making night with our host Rena! It was the tastiest sangria we have had our entire stay in Spain! The rest of the team Yessi, Jeiko, Eli and Carlos were very helpful and friendly! Have enjoyed visiting the beautiful rooftop bar!

I came to the roof terrace to have some birthday drinks alongside with my friends. Renalyn, the bartender, was absolutely adorable. The ambient was perfect for to spent a lovely and relaxed time to socialize.

The location is excellent, right in the heart of the city with easy access to public transport, restaurants, and major sights. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the common areas had a lively, social vibe. However, the room had a few downsides. The bed was noisy — I could hear every movement, which made it hard to sleep at times. Also, the walls seemed thin, so noise from neighboring rooms and hallways carried easily. Overall, it’s a decent place if you’re looking for a central, budget-friendly option, but bring earplugs just in case.

Nice chilled bar with a good atmosphere, views over Madrid and really good music. Central location. Drinks not too expensive. Starts to shut down about 1pm on a Friday. Also, has hit tubs during the day if you're brave enough!||Would come again.||Amazing service from Eli, Rena, Quinie and Ricky!

Yelp
We had a private room for 2, with a private bathroom for 2 nights. Pros: Clean, functional, great rooftop bar, recently updated Cons: Check-in line was very long, creaky beds, minimal air conditioning, DJ starts at 6pm and doesn't stop until midnight or so, restaurant isn't very good, "game room" is highly advertised but not much of anything If you're just looking for a place to sleep, as most hostel guests are, I wouldn't dissuade you.

Yelp
Pros: -Excellent location. This is exactly where you want to be for your Madrid explorations -We're in a double private with en-suite. The room is small but well appointed with a desk, smart TV, and ample lighting. The bathroom is large and functional. -In the double it's two twin beds you can roll together or apart. Perfect for couples or friends -Very clean -We're on the 5th floor and have found it to be nice and quiet -Nice downstairs bar -Rooftop bar Cons: -Tons of children. A confusing amount of children.

Yelp
This hotel is so horrible. We came in after our flight landed and weren't even greeted before we were berated and taunted by the staff for coming in before 3pm even though we had told them 4 weeks in advance the time we would be arriving. They never told us our check in time, but we had clearly informed them exactly when we would be arriving. Every member of the staff we came into contact with was a rude bully. Would give 0 stars if possible.

Yelp
The rooms are actually pretty dope, and I met some really cool people staying there. No complaints about the room. HOWEVER...beware - the staff service is absolutely horrible. I stood there at the "restaurant" and waited 25 MINUTES, with nobody there to tell me how breakfast worked or what to do...I saw other people walking in and serving themselves, so I finally did the same (after 25 minutes of waiting with no service, mind you). After I sat down and started eating breakfast, a woman walks up and asks me for a ticket..I said I'm sorry, all I have is a room key. I was waiting for somebody at the hostess desk, but nobody showed up for 25 minutes. She proceeded to humiliate me by trying to insinuate that I was basically stealing their breakfast (mind you, I'm a pre-paid customer at Generator for 4 nights)...I said, can I just pay now? She basically rolled her eyes at me and said she would "handle it" and walked away...It gets better...she didn't give me any details on the pricing, so I pulled out 9 Euros and just placed it on the table in front of me, and when she came back, she, once again, lectured me on the process and attempted to humiliate me, and walked away with 6 of my euros on the table(price of breakfast apparently). After she did this, I got up to grab another coffee, and when I came back, the remaining 3 euros were gone....which whatever, it's trivial really. The woman was beyond rude. I notice service though, all around Spain, is pretty horrible, and it's clear they hate Americans, even Spanish-speaking Americans like myself....also, just as I was about to click "post", this lady walks around the corner and gives me a really dirty look, so now the 2 stars have been downgraded to 1 star. Maybe she is also just homophobic toward me? Who knows...
