Compared to the snazzy spaces downstairs, they're smart but spartan. Sheets are provided, but there’s an extra charge for towels. In dorms, each bed has its own socket for charging phones, a lock-up space for your belongings, and a reading light. Quad rooms are useful for families. Bathrooms in larger dorms are small for the number of users and not always squeaky clean. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? Wi-fi, included in the room rate, is good. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? There are many evenings when the ground floor of Generator is party central—something to bear in mind if you’re a light sleeper or staying with kids. There are cooked or continental breakfast options (all extra); food in the restaurant and drinks at the bar are slightly cheaper than elsewhere in town. And the service? Basic. What type of travelers will you find here? Backpackers and budget travelers. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? "Alastair Thomann, CEO of Generator, the poshtel chain with an outpost just across the water from St. Mark’s Square, on the island of Giudecca. 'This market [usually] performs with brutally high occupancies year round,' he says. 'But now we’re feeling the pinch. It’s the kind of stuff we see after a big financial crisis, or the Iraq war.' Thomann notes that Generator’s occupancy is down 6.9 percent compared to the same time last year, and the rates for the full year are down 9.2 percent. Taken together, this translates into a staggering 15.5 percent drop in RevPAR (or revenue per available room), the industry standard benchmark for a hotel’s financial success."
