"Genji Kyoto honors the traditional Machiya form, long, narrow wooden townhouses unique to Kyoto. The hotel preserves the original proportions of the Machiya and incorporates elements inspired by the Tale of Genji, with gardens, sculptures, and art by Kyoto artists in each room." - The MICHELIN Guide

This hotel was such a highlight for my boyfriend and I on our recent trip to Kyoto. I loved watching the sun rise each morning on our balcony overlooking the Kamo River. The breakfast package (we ordered the Japanese and Western style breakfasts) was delicious and gave us the fuel we needed to walk around and explore. All of the staff members were really friendly and accommodating throughout our stay as well. I would definitely recommend this hotel to a couple looking for a peaceful and romantic getaway. Ten out of ten!!!

This was such an exemplary boutique hotel experience that I just have to mention it here! The space and rooms felt like just the right vibe for Kyoto, well-appointed yet efficiently thoughtful with their space. Yet the biggest draw here is the service: you get top-tier attention from their staff every time you walk into the building. Shout out to Sergei from the front desk, who helped us score a reservation at an amazing restaurant that's hard to get into, and something we never would have found on our own. Highly recommended for your next visit to the marvelous city of Kyoto!

I could give 100 on 5 stars to this hotel and their hospitality. It is a very beautiful boutique hotel. The rooms are modern yet have the traditional Japanese touch. Their service is one of the best I have experienced so far. The staff is extremely friendly-one of the hotel staff members (mind you he was old) ran out to give us a heat pack for the day. The location is great and close to a lot of interesting tourist spots! Definitely a great option for anyone looking for a comfortable and super friendly stay.

Totally unexpected standout boutique hotel. This has to be one of the loveliest hotels we have ever stayed at anywhere. Kyoto is one of our favourite destinations and Genji has made this trip even better. The design here is outstanding and the staff cannot do enough for you in the kindest way. A must visit for Kyoto!

This is a charming hotel that is classy and comfortable. Even though its architecture is contemporary, it has design details that reference traditional features and techniques. Their Japanese garden in the lobby has a back wall that looks like wood, but is actually concrete with imprinted wood patterns. It was so cool! Our room was spacious with very comfortable beds, and the view was just amazing. Looking at the birds and fish and turtles on the river was really fun and calming. But the best part was getting to know the wonderful staff. They all speak English well and are incredibly friendly and helpful. We are grateful to them for a most memorable trip.

This hotel was absolutely amazing, and surpassed all of our expectations - I would highly recommend booking this hotel if you can find availability!||We stayed in a City Deluxe Room and were blown away by the attention to detail in the room design, the comfort, and functionality. The hotel opened recently, and everything felt new and custom. This room felt luxe, bespoke and truly designed for Kyoto. The room design was a perfect mix of Western and Japanese design and sensibilities, with an incredibly comfortable bed and pillows, a spectacular bathroom area, and a beautiful sitting area - and custom touches throughout. The design of the room and the hotel are so cohesive and thoughtful, it was a joy to get back to our room each day after the long, tiring days sightseeing in Kyoto!||The hotel itself really impressed us - it is truly a boutique hotel, with less than 20 rooms. I'll admit, I was a little nervous as I'd never stayed at a hotel this small before, but this hotel really surpassed expectations with it's personal service level, its location tucked into a local neighborhood along the riverfront, and just cozy and chic "vibes". All of the staff were helpful and so knowledgeable, with excellent recommendations for nearby restaurants and things to do. The lobby restaurant / bar are great for either the breakfast or an evening cocktail (I loved the Kyoto Negroni). And there's a beautiful garden rooftop with views of the city over the river, which was great in good weather. ||The neighborhood was also great - quiet, away from the crowds, and in a very local, neighborhood area - but still really easy to get to transit options, and walkable to either Gion or Kyoto station area. In fact, we walked here from Kyoto station with our luggage in about 15 minutes. Also, the hotel staff have great recommendations for nearby food and drink options. The hotel is right on the river, too!||I can't say enough about how much we loved this hotel, and I would recommend staying here, and hope to get to return someday! It definitely is one of the most memorable hotels I've stayed at, for all the right reasons!

Our 3rd stay. |This time round, we had a fast check-in. As usual, the check-in process was accompanied by a good variety of beverages choices.||The good: |Speedy service for every phone call to reception.|Heated floor in the bathroom. |Lovely garden upstairs. You can have breakfast there but we always prefer the comfort of in-room dining.|Foam pillows in room before arrival as per our request - most hotels always forget our requests so it's lovely that they pay attention.|We also appreciate that our room was nice and bright even at night so that we could pack our luggages.|Plus, there is a vending machine outside our hotel. Just opposite the main entrance.|Most importantly, the breakfast is still superb!!! The main reason I keep returning.||The not-so-good: |The room runs hot. |Lowest aircon temp is 20 degrees. 2nd night woke up feeling sweaty and that was in autumn!|Only one tissue box in the room. |Washer dryer was slow. 3 hours to dry. The staff were really kind and helped us clear our laundry in the middle of the night and left the clean clothes in a basket outside our room door.||Location |Not bad. We took taxis:|¥1400 from Kawaramachi Street to hotel , |¥5000 from the nearest main rd to Togetsukyo|¥1000 to Gion entrance |On foot:|7 to 12min walk to nearest Family Mart and Lawsons near the train station.|If you need to go back to the Kyoto train station, ask the hotel to help you book maxicab 2 days in advance.|Ryo was a great help. Even helped us with our luggage to a side street to load into the taxi.||I will return. The view from the balcony is nice and peaceful with the ducks swimming in the river. ||If you find this review helpful, please vote for me. Thank you.
