Genoa Bar and Saloon

The wife and I went to the South Lake Tahoe area, and stayed at David Walley's Resort. Sure, we went over the pass 3-4 times during our week stay to the lake, but we also discovered THIS gem while exploring the immediate area. We loved this place so much that we were impressed with ourselves the day that we did NOT make a stop by this bar, and perhaps we even stopped by twice if eating in Genoa. You walk in (by the way, look like a regular, and PUSH the very low doorknob, not pull like I did initially) and immediately know it is dripping with history, divey-ness, and awesomeness. The crowd comes in waves, as it is a popular drop-in for people coming through town as well as many very welcoming and friendly locals. Actually, I want to say again how awesome the regulars were. Not sure how I would feel if constant tourist dropped in my homestead, but everyone we talked to who was local was awesome and inviting. The bar had an IPA for me. They have a pool table. They have a jukebox (which defaulted to glam rock when we were there, so I LOVED that). They have cool merch. They have some awesome stuff on walls and ceiling. They have some fantastic mixed drinks, including one of the better Bloody Mary's my wife has had as well as a unique, tasty hot drink (Hot Buttered Buccaneer Drink). They have a spacious outdoor area. They don't have food, but we had a burger and burger salad (wife) from the food truck there, and it was stellar. The fries were great too. Back to the bar though. And, every bartender who served us during the week gave us friendly, efficient, perfect service. Once we realized that South Tahoe was irritatingly tourist overpopulated at this time of year, we decided to attend this cool candle-lighting tradition they did on NYE there instead of figuring out logistics over the pass. The event was SOOOO cool, and they even had a fun band later that night that they somehow packed into the jukebox corner. Hope I don't forget anyone. Whether you get Syd, Gabby, Candi, Dee, Carrie, or Ginger (the only one I didn't meet personally), you will love your experience here. They were all rock stars during our visits. I can't say enough good things about this bar, it really made "our South Tahoe trip," and you should swing by if in the area. I highly recommend this place, and see you there (the next time we are in the area)...

If you’re staying in South Lake Tahoe and want a drink with a side of storytelling (and maybe a ghost), Genoa Bar is absolutely worth the short drive.

A historic bar with personality with a varied client mix of tourists, motorcyclists on day trips, and cowboys. Walls are covered with various western artifacts or memorabilia, and overall decor is simple as a historic spot would be. Some irony that Nevada's longest standing bar is across the street from Nevada's first settlement at Mormon Station. Service can be slow as staffing is thin, so consider going on non peak times- mid afternoons, week days or as winter nears. Didn't try food as outside seating wasn't available.

Excellent stop on a lazy afternoon exploring Nevada! Town is very charming to meander through and this is the perfect place to stop for a libation. It was busy when I visited so service wasn’t the fastest but understandable as the bartenders were working hard. The memorabilia inside is fun so stay a while and explore, you’ll have a good laugh at half the stuff. Inside and outside seating available.

Nevada’s oldest saloon is the cutest place, so much history it really takes you back. Stopped in for an afternoon drink on the way to Lake Tahoe and enjoyed their outdoor seating area. Really nice to see history preserved for future generations.

Oldest bar. If you like drinks and nostalgic places then stop here on your scenic drives! Not recommended if you are a wine aficionado though!

As you can see, there are a lot of great photos on here, and a ton of people love the oldest bar in Nevada. A buddy took me here for the first time on a Sunday afternoon. It didn't disappoint. They had live music in the bar and a ton of seating outside to enjoy the beautiful day. The women behind the bar are busy but fun. I highly recommend stopping by with a friend or two and relaxing in this old, small town.

What a sweet little bar! Drinks were great and well priced, staff were super friendly and the atmosphere is amazing! Fun decorations and such a cool old saloon feel. We came multiple times when visiting the area! They have a pool table too! Can't wait to come back

Came here to have a drink when visiting Genoa for the first time and my first impression of the place was wow, it's so popular! There were way more people there than I expected! We walked in and the inside gives off old fashion saloon and I loved it! We were able to go right up to the bar after a group of people walked out and I asked what the bartender recommended which was the cucumber Spritza and she asked if I liked lavender. I said I did so she added lavender syrup and it was a great touch. Great drink! I want another! Service was great! The bartender was very smiley and helpful. The outside has lots of picnic benches to sit at and it was the perfect day! Highly recommend grabbing a drink at Nevadas oldest thirst parlor!

Second time we made this stop while we were in S Lake Tahoe. Definitely worth the drive. Historic town with small town charm. This bar is in the heart of the town. Bartender was nice and made a few recommendations.

A Mormon, A Catholics And a Baptist walk into a bar during happy hour. Although it may sound like the opening of a funny joke. Some people take their Bars very serious. Genoa locals claim to have Nevadas first established bar. Although a bar in a small Mormon village seems like an oddly displaced oxymoron. Unless you are one to never judge a bar by its cover. Such as their locally made Wild Huckleberry Chocolate Bar. A bar that is wrapped like it was freshly minted out of the Wiley Wonka factory. Ironically it actually tastes like 100 year old stale candy. Nevertheless everyone is entitled to their taste preferences. This bar reminded of a time when my father took me to a bar for lunch. The place was dark and the bartender was passively quiet. The bar top was pre set with a glass of water and a bowl of roasted beer nuts. My father hopped onto the closest barstool and ordered a beer as he made conversation with the fellow patrons. He guzzled his first sip of beer and stated to me. "A man cannot live on bread and water alone" After that the room started to glow with energy. Point being. A bar always seems empty until the bartenders and patrons have a good reason to serve one another.

A delicate glass of wine, caressed and cherished, Inviting ambiance, a delightful expedition to be relished, Curiosity sparked, hunger pangs on the rise, Inquired about food, hoping for a surprise. Alas, the response was not what I craved, Only beef jerky, leaving my appetite enslaved, But fear not, for joy still found its way to me, A zesty, liberating Bloody Mary, setting my spirit free.

A piece of Nevada history and well worth the stop. Friendly staff, good pours and reasonable prices. The huge, antique 'diamond dust' mirror imported from Glasgow in the 1860's via San Francisco that adorns the back of the bar is worth the trip alone. According to the bartender, mediums don't recommend staring too long into the mirror because "it's seen a lot of things!"

We came back this time with the pup in tow! Needed to add an update because this place is an ideal spot to bring your dog. Fig was everyone's best friend! The amazing bartender had treats ready so Fig did her treat dance. When we got bored of hanging with everyone inside we went to hang out by the roaring fire pit. A great way to spend a windy chilly spring day! I tried some of the cocktails this visit. They were strong, tasty, and cheap. Whether you're on a hike or just want a fun side trip this bar is a great spot.

Cute ole timey bar that was established in 1851. Decorated with unique antiques with a fire in the back. Has live music on Sundays with plenty of seating outside. Service was friendly and attentive. Didn't try the food but if it's as good As the drinks I'd say go for it. I would recommend the Bloody Mary with Tito's. It's one of the best I've had ever! I will coming back soon.

This is where it's at in Genoa! Live music popping off at 2pm in the afternoons. Great friendly service at fair prices. Just a fun must see spot if your in the area.

Very fun place! The bar tender has drink specials that I tried which were her own recipe and they were all absolutely delicious. The heaters and fire pit were on full blast so sitting outside was great! Definitely will be coming ago, both bartenders we're attentive and loving!

Been trying to check this place out since I moved to Tahoe 4 years ago. Luckily I had friends visit and they wanted to check out the surrounding area. I told them about the oldest bar in NV is located nearby and they were up for it. After visiting Virginia City we headed to Genoa. We arrived on a Saturday around 5pm and it was alittle busy. Walking into the bar was a similar feeling walking into the bars in Virginia City. The rustic bar felt something straight out of a John Wayne or Clint Eastwood western movie. The old photos and paintings on the wall with the antique chandeliers added to the mystic of the bar. I asked the bartender what was the bar's drink and she said the John Wayne. How appropriate. I was thinking it was going to be a shot of Rye whisky or something similar but it was a bloody mary that they have been serving for 30 years. I tried it out because it was made with a bacon infused vodka so that sounded interesting. And I must say it was pretty good. The bartenders were friendly and helpful with the bars history too.. So if you enjoy old western bars go and check it out you won't be disappointed.

My aunt & uncle had previously ben here & were anxious to introduce us to it. We love the old world atmosphere & friendly service. It is fun to look around at all the memorabelia of singers & selevarties who visited over the years. The country music in the background is pretty good as well. It was fun to read up on the history. The kulsche was the best & my mother, aunt, & uncle also enjoyed their beers as well. I love how you can sit inside or out & take a step back in time & enjoy everything as cars pass by the main road. We definitely be back to try more. Food wise, I was not sure if they served food or if you get it from nearby establishments. So, for an old world bar experience with friendly service at reasonable prices, Genoa Bar cannot be beat. Keep up the good work guys.

Really fun bar with tons of history! So fun to explore all of the items they have on display. I love the town of Genoa-so charming with its historical houses and statues and this bar is one of the gems of the town!

This is a bar, so can't comment on the food. But, a unique and fun bar to visit. Went here a couple of times when I worked in NV. Definitely on my 'stop when I'm in the area list'. And they're dog friendly. Good service, history oozing out of the walls, your dog (or a borrowed one) by your side, what more could you ask for? Well, you are heading to the oldest watering hole in NV founded in a Mormon settlement. Something to ponder over while you sip your brew.

I came here with a group of friends Friday May 6 in the evening. We ordered food from the food truck/trailer Hungry Hearts (review of that: https://www.yelp.com/biz/hungry-hearts-genoa?hrid=aD31inejGIccXhVdeZh4Dw&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct) ). While we waited for our food to be ready, we briefly debated between eating outside or inside. Luckily, there was one table in the front corner of the bar that we were able to snag for our group of 5. My boyfriend ordered us each a drink, I don't know what it was as I told him to surprise me, but I'm confident it was some kind of whiskey drink. It was delicious! It was well made and the proportions of alcohol to mixer was perfect. The decor of the old bar was definitely true to the time period of the bar's origin. I like that they kept it original and didn't modernize much. There is a pool table for entertainment. Bathroom (at least the ladies room) was relatively modernized and didn't look like the original era. There was plenty of space in this bathroom, I've noticed in older places the bathrooms are rather cramped, so I appreciate the room to move while business is being done. Definitely a fun little bar to check out if you're in Genoa!

Friendly people and good service. A little pricey and the daiquiri had chunks of ice. Still not bad, for a local bar.

The bar is amazing and old timey. The manager is a saggy worn down monster of a woman. The staff is friendly and nice. Although there is no food options are close to eat. I hope ownership finds better management to represent this place.

We stopped here in the early afternoon on a Sunday. We have been here before and always thought it was cool. It is known as Nevada's oldest thirst parlor. There is so much history about this place, we will leave it up to you to research. There are picnic tables in front and places to sit on the porch. There is this really cool artsy wood stove in the front as well. It was burning on this cooler spring day and felt great! The outdoor area has also been enlarged to include a side area with a fire pit and what used to be the little store attached to the bar on the right is now a space where they prepare and serve drinks to people outside, it is a great addition! They also had someone making tacos under a canopy which were available to purchase to go with the libations from the bar. We just happened to stumble here today when they were having one of their porch parties that they have during the better weather months. The band that was playing was Dougie L & the Lost Reverend's. What a cool name! We took a walk inside where the band was playing and it was packed with people enjoying and singing along. After hanging out a bit inside, we stepped outside, ordered a drink and hung out and enjoyed the atmosphere and planning the rest of our day. Overall, the Genoa Bar is the center of this quaint town full of history and charm. You really can't find a better dive bar with all this history.

What a cool place, is literally the oldest standing bar in take!!! And although I think they need a second bartender with how busy it is, everyone is actually respectful and forms one line to feed drinks so it helps the bartender out, Drinks are reasonably priced and taste good! What more can you ask for

Nice spot to sit, enjoy a drink and some of Nevada's oldest history. Typically the inside of the bar is open but currently only the patio is open due to covid. They have ample seating and 2 windows to order drinks to keep the line moving. They also have a merchandise board out front to see what shirts and hats are available for sale.

Don't judge a book by its cover. I did and I was totally wrong. I really though it would be awkward as I'm in no ways a country girl, but you don't need to be one. This place is amazing. The bartenders are knowledgeable, able to multi-task and very friendly. Patrons are friendly as well. And they allow dogs, which is a plus in my book because someone brought their fur babies and I loved it. I only wish the music box would take cards, cause very few folks have cash these days.

Took a bike ride with some friends to have a beer at the oldest bar in Nevada. What a great place. Checks so many boxes: -Historic Old West -Great dive bar -Hollywood history -Signature cocktails -Strong Craft beer selection -Surly (but friendly) locals -Great outdoor patio looking over the main drag I'm a sucker for American History and sitting in this bar, one can easily envision dusty cowboys, wearing their spurs and six guns, downing brown liqour out of a nondescript, clear glass bottle. While others are playing poker and listening to old-timey piano music. This is a must-see spot if your nearby!

I never have a bad time every time I come to this place. The waitresses are awesome, and the drinks are great!

When we told Papa about Raquel Welch's bra hanging from the ceiling of a bar, his eyes went wide. Papa is my 90+ year old grandfather, and he's always been a lady's man. Old school charm, sharp wit, and a heap of respect has made him a favorite with everyone he meets, and when we brought him here to see the fabled brassiere, it was no different. More on that in a second... For those that don't know the story behind the bra, here you go! Raquel Welch was filming a movie in Tahoe and she frequently came down the mountain to Genoa to escape her fans. The Genoa Bar had been collecting ladies bras for many years, proudly displaying them on the walls, and when the owner realized who had been visiting, he politely asked her to add hers as the shining star amongst the collection. Ms. Welch agreed... with one condition. The owner had to take ALL the other bras down and leave only hers hanging, and he happily obliged, moving all the others into a safe that's on the right side of the bar as you walk in. It has been a few years and her bra has seen its better days, but Papa was amused. As it turns out, the day after Thanksgiving is an annual party at Genoa Bar, and we just so happened to hit it right. Live music, complimentary snacks, great simple drinks and excellent people gathered to enjoy each other's company. Mom and my wife played some video blackjack with Papa looking over their shoulders offering advice. Dad and I admired the history and made friends with everyone around us, and even my father-in-law sang a few songs and had a beer too! It was the best stop on a whirlwind tour of the Carson Valley, and a stop ALL visitors to Northern Nevada NEED to make!

What a crazy cool place! We were in town for Thanksgiving weekend and came here several times this place is steeped in history being here since the 1850's it even has a giant diamond dust mirror brought in from Scotland to San Francisco then transported by covered wagon to Genoa. This is everything you'd expect a bar from 1850's to be!! original Wood bar and floors, with dust, old photos and thousands of artifacts from the old days everywhere. I heard that back in the day when anyone died during the winter the ground would be too frozen to bury them so they would store the bodies in the cellar of the bar till the spring thaw. so of course there are some cool ghost stories too. the current owners a so nice we met them while we were here the brought in a pot luck for everyone to eat too.

Favorite saloon! If you want to get a real feel for Nevada history, stop by and take a seat in one of the old benches just outside. Fun drink menu! I love the Tahoe Mule, made with ginger beer and Tahoe vodka. So refreshing to sip and watch a fun variety of locals and tourists interact.

Stopped in with some yelp friends for a cold beverage after a hike and lunch. Being the oldest bar in the state, it was exactly what I expected! An ancient bar with thousands of artifacts from the old days! I love history! This place had me before I even walked in the door! The place was packed! Sunday afternoon, perfect weather, lots of tourists! This is a favorite stop of the bikers doing runs from all directions! Outside seating was available but full, in the front and on the side where there was a band playing. There was a little food stand outside, but I had already had lunch, so I wasn't really interested in what they had available. I loved watching all the folks come and go, and I enjoyed all of the great historic photographs on the walls! However, what intrigued me the most, was the bra hanging from the wall! Did I hear that correctly? Did you just tell me that that bra belongs to Racquel Welch?? Her picture is on the wall directly behind the bra. Yup! That was hers all right! It seems they might've shrunk over the years, I thought those cups might've been a little bigger! Of course, Racquel Welch was the bomb when I was a little boy! Everything seems bigger when you're a little boy! LOL! Anyway, we finished our beverage, and we were on our way! I enjoyed everything about this place! It's age, it's history, it's photographs on the walls, it's clientele, and it's icy cold beer! Oh yes! I will return! Just to take another glimpse of that bra, if for no other reason!

Unique, classic and historical watering hole not far off of I395 in the small town of Genoa, Nevada. Great bloody mary's and the bartender and owner were very welcoming. Would definitely recommend for a repeat visit!

I saw this place on the Travel Channel and asked myself why I never ventured here. Genoa is just on the other side of South Lake Tahoe near the Kingsbury Grade. This is the oldest settlement in Nevada and has the oldest bar in the state. They are located right on Main Street near the Mormon Station. The bar is rather small, but it has a large stand-up bar with extensive outdoor seating. The interior is worth a linger with lots of classic and humorous artifacts on the walls. I did not find Raquel Welch's bra due to dodging a couple trying to dance between games of pool. The bar has a bunch of specialty drinks and their own draught amber ale which was delicious. Outside, there is a substantial amount of nice seating with a large fire pit and an old school porch with rocking chairs. There is no closing time, and you can wander around with your drink. The combination of locals and tourists seemed like trouble, but everyone really wanted to be there and have fun so it was a great time for everyone. Ultimately, this is a bar, but it is more than just a simple watering hole. It is a great combination of a museum and backyard with a lively group of people and is a quick drive from Heavenly and South Lake Tahoe. The location at the base of the mountains in rural Nevada is just awesome and really is a great end to the day.

Love hanging out here! I've been frequenting this place for decades. The location isn't exactly convenient but the lush alpine forest to the west is stunning! The clientele is always lively and engaging and the bartenders are fun! They have started this event on Sundays where they feature a live local band that plays outside. Add freshly made tacos and a "specialty drink of the day" and you have a boba fire party! You all know where to find me on Sundays this summer.

Completely fell in love with this bar! Loved the outdoor seating and fire pits! They had a great selection of cocktails, bear, wine and liquor.

Just when you think there is no way to make this place better, they find a way. Last week while in the area we decided to stop in and enjoy the bar during a less busy time, midweek in the evening. It was a beautiful evening as the sun had already set behind the Sierra and it was far from capacity, probably 6 sitting inside and another dozen outside. How did it get better? Brand new, sturdy, beautiful hard wood tables, and they've expanded south around the building and they've added a fire pit. Maybe this was all here already, but I never saw it as I'm sure I had other priorities, but on a very comfortable afternoon, it was very nice to be outside. The place keeps getting better and better, and I will continue to be a fan.

Good place to stop for a refreshing beverage. In the summer they have bands and a good crowd Today was a late Tuesday afternoon, with a couple of empty stools at the bar, perfect. We've been here quite a few times always a stop on our motorbike rides, today was no exception. This is the oldest saloon in Nevada and the town is defiantly worth a stop and look see. My kind of bar...dark, dirty, all sorts of people and it's dog friendly! I had a cheap but fancy wintery drink. Bar staff was fantastic. The crowd was friendly. I didn't want to leave but it was snowing and we had to make our way back up the mountain. So much history in one little town. I can't wait to go back and visit Genoa and all of its coolness.

Sunday Porch Party in Genoa, NV. I was hoping for a normal, relaxing Sunday at home. My husband said let's go to Genoa. I said, 'huh, where, what? Genoa? Why would I want to go to Genoa, NV? How far is it. (It's about an hour from Sparks, NV on a Sunday). I was thinking, if I wanted to have a good time, I could ride down to Nugget Rib Cook-off. Here we go, to Genoa nowhere land in NV. This place is happening. (I am 51 yrs old, however, I think most of the surrounding area is my age anyway.) But, don't take my word for it. Watch the video ...No, but seriously, you have got to try the 'Chewbacca Taco'. My husband asked if I wanted a taco. I said sure. I wasn't going to get picky even though I was starving. Wholly Molly!!! It's a plate full of taco Stuffing and 2 little itty bitty, yummy corn tortillas. It's enough for 3 people. Very Tasty. Okay, I back. Just got off the dance dirt and am catching my breath. The joint inside is very nice and cool. Facilities are clean. Souvenirs and historical artifacts can be found all over walls. Way cool place. Everyone was super nice to me even though I am Dodger Fan. I will definitely be back when I'm in better shape. By the way, The Trippen' King Snakes we're the live band for the day. Awesome!!!

Everybody should check out the gritty Genoa Bar. Atmosphere is one of a kind old west original building and dust. Sweet Sipin Sundays with live music is a must during warmer months. Get a whiskey or a local beer on tap and belly up to the bar or outdoor porch.

I've known about this place for many years. Finally on a recent vacation we made the time to stop by and check it out. I'm glad we did I'm also glad I don't live in Genoa or I'd be the town drunk. Love, love, love this place. Next time I have any reason to be in northern Nevada I'll be sure to go out of my way to check this place out. The perfect dive bar in the perfect little town. The bartender was friendly, drinks were good. We each got ourselves a couple of t-shirts. Be sure to check out Raquel Welch's bra. Hope to visit you guys again someday.

This is everything you'd expect a bar from 1853 to be!! Wood floors, dust, old photos and bras on the wall! That's right, I said 18-53 and bras on the wall! Raquel Welch's to be exact. This is the oldest continuing running bar in Nevada and you can feel the history as soon as you walk in. It's like a portal to another time when you pony up to bar and the "barkeep" slides you a cold one. It's off the beaten path and unless you were looking for it, you'd drive right by and miss it. And that would be a shame. You have to turn off the highway, down a dirt road and travel back in time. The whole town is a gem, but this is the only place we stopped. More to explore on another day. The bar is a favorite of locals, hikers, tourists and bikers alike. Everyone is super friendly, and extremely welcoming. Don't let the myriad of Harley's out front detour you. The people are laid back and warm and all here for the same reason - a cold beverage. The prices are extremely reasonable, dare I even say cheap? It really seems like not much has changed since the 1800s. The ladies restroom is one of the cleanest I have ever been in in a public establishment. Now I'm usually not a public restroom sorta gal, I typically avoid them at all cost, but I had overheard some other ladies raving about it and had to check it out for myself. Ladies we ALL know how important a clean restroom is. 5-Stars for the restroom alone!! They do have live music on certain days and I'm sure this place gets pretty rocking. Sadly, there was no live music on the day I stopped it, but again, just another "excuse" to come back to this great little hidden gem. When/if you're even in the Tahoe or Reno area, you really need to come check them out, it's definitely worth the 30-45 minute drive. You won't be disappointed!

Great old School saloon, such a cool experience to be in an establishment from so many many years ago. Wow such history your surrounded by. Amazing service , i wish I would Of asked her name. The drinks by far where just as delicious as she expressed. 5 stars all way! Can't wait to come back around into town

My husband and I visited South Lake Tahoe for my birthday week - yes, I get a birthday week! And I have the most amazing husband in the world! We decided to do the Razor Ridge Run ride with Lake Tahoe Adventures (that's my other 5 star review!) Paul, our trail guide, recommended we stop by Genoa Bar for a couple of cold brews. Did not, repeat, did not disappoint! This place is a gem! Loved everything about it - from the charming little town to the history of the bar. Definitely an unforgettable birthday!!

ALWAYS a fun people watching experience. This past Saturday after a 7 mile hike at the nearby trail head, stopped off with friends to quench my thirst. This IS Nevada's oldest bar so treat it with respect. As you walk up, take note of the size, outdoor tables, step inside and saunter up to the bar for a beer or spirit. There are so many historical items to view on the walls to the safe that holds patrons bras. Some of the glass windows facing the front are original. If your staying in town or live nearby, the weekend live music bring in some good crowds. Fun time. For the women viewing this, there are some good craft shops. For the gun owner there is a gun store/antique store very close. Maybe visit them first before the saloon. Parking is limited so please respect nearby shops. If your visiting from South Shore Tahoe, give yourself about 40 minutes but well worth the visit. Bring the kids as there is a good deli shop across the street. Enjoy!!
