Beer & Mortar: Tales of Boston-Area Breweries | Eater Boston

"Paul Gentile intentionally keeps this Beverly brewery small — brewing on a two-barrel system — because he prefers a manageable scale that lets him focus on essentials, keeping the taproom and beer straightforward and to the point." - Eater Staff

Google
Nice little brewery in Beverly. Not crowded but extremely friendly folks on a Sunday afternoon. I had the West Coast IPA, delicious and I could really taste the different hops. Plenty of seating, games. Limited off street parking, street parking. Had a good time waiting until we could check in to our hotel.

Google
This brewery and the Gentile family have created true community - and really great beer! Super welcoming, dog friendly, great vibes, solid people, an awesome deck, and their run club seems fun. I don’t run because it sucks but if you like running and beer, you’ll probably love this place!

Google
Great beer 🍺 excellent service. Very welcoming and courteous staff.

Google
A great brewery with a focus on community. Paul and his family brew their beer with their hearts and it’s evident when you take the first sip. They have a great array of beer styles, a cool and comfortable taproom, and welcoming atmosphere for everyone. I had their Squash Porter and loved every sip. Honors a classic Porter style with a fun hint of fall spices and squash.

Google
Great local brewery with unique selection of brews and snacks. Outdoor patio to enjoy brews and sun. Lots of seating inside and out. And plenty of parking. Highly recommend the Kolsch and Helles!

Great selection here, in a fine atmosphere. Worth the drive from Boston!

Google
Great beer, great staff, and a really fun place to hang out. The Cask beers have been OUTSTANDING!!! What an amazing job this team has done continuing to deliver great new beers through their pickup window while we are all social distancing. I highly recommend Gentile!!!!

Google
I absolutely adore Gentile Brewing. They’re not only one of the best beers for miles around, they’re our neighbors, they’re our community and they’re my safe place to celebrate all of my milestones. Thanks Gentile!

Yelp
*DOG FRIENDLY* This place not only has amazing beer, but is truly dog friendly! I love how great the staff is with all the dogs that come in and are very accommodating. This is definitely a place you want to go with your dog, lots of tables and space to hang out in. We had our dog's Gotcha Day party here and we definitely appreciate letting the dogs celebrate while also enjoying great beer. We tried several of the beers and I would say our favorites are the following: Squash Porter - 5.5% - GLUTEN REDUCED - a dark beer brewed with MA grown butternut squash and spices with our own spice blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and clove. It's rich and did have a hint aftertaste of squash. West Coast DIPA - 6.8% - GLUTEN REDUCED - a malty DIPA hopped with Four Star Farms Cascade and Centennial. It was my bf's favorite, he loved the taste of it So if you're looking for a new brewery that you can go with your dog, this is the place for you!

Yelp
Just when I thought Beverly couldn't get any better, Gentile Brewing emerges as the new fun hangout spot in town (well, technically a city). This amazing little brewery has a stunning tap room with beautiful natural lightings and gleaming-like-minded beer drinkers who were here to just have a good time. Di-Ver-Gent- Very creative. This wasn't just a play on word, it's a series of IPAs with different combinations of malts and hops for each batch. This one in particular was more on the hoppier side. Squash Porter- Bitter, malty, reminded me of toffee. We enjoyed it. Overall Service: Engaging and personable, basically they checked off everything in my book.

Yelp
Cool little brewery, nice big space, clean bathrooms, and the female bartender (whose name this jackass wrote down and then lost) was really nice. All around it is a fun place to visit, and a seemingly good choice if you want to try a bunch of traditional styles of beers and figure out which ones you like. You won't find double dry hopped IPAs, but some of those places don't offer much other than that, so this place may be a fairly welcome change to some.

Yelp
Fun fact: When I first heard Gentile was on Park Street, I wondered if it was in the old Press Box location, but then figured that place is probably condemned by the health commission, so it couldn't possibly be. And it's not, but it is just a block or so away. Another fun fact: Read the signs because Gentile actually has parking, but Stacey and I missed that, so we parked at the depot. Gentile Brewing is great. We got a flight, so we could sample different style. As I consult Untappd, I see that I really enjoyed the Farmhouse Saison, as did my sister, and she is also a fan of their porter. We had just missed out on a gourd beer, which is sad. The bar is small, but we grabbed the last two seats on a Saturday around 3:30. There's plenty of room at the bigger tables across from the bar. The one thing we couldn't stop talking about is the staff. We forget their names, but both (a man and woman) were so incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and kept the conversation going at the bar. Even if we didn't like the beer, that alone would bring us back, because we absolutely loved the staff. Gentile is definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
I had heard great things about this nearby brewery for quite some time and it took an unfortunate situation for me to finally make my way there. As I was stuck waiting nearby to get my car out from being towed (with a quoted hour and a half wait and a dead phone), I headed to Gentile to kill time and hopefully charge my phone. The moment I walked in, I greeted by an adorable golden retriever and a super friendly staff. I explained my situation and they immediately set me up with a seat at the bar and a charger as my phone got to charge right in front of me. I also enjoyed a delicious IPA (I think it was called Divergence?). Not long after I arrived, another dog the size of a bear (ok, maybe not that large but the closest size a dog can get to one) came waddling in looking for affection. I was in dog and IPA heaven! All of the patrons were nice and the place was filled with quite a few people but wasn't obnoxiously mobbed. After the time came to face the tow man, I was in a much better mood about the situation, got my dog fix and phone charged. I'm mad at myself for waiting so long to visit and will absolutely be back many times over. Thanks to the guys are the bar for helping me out too!

Yelp
Our group tried a variety of beers and struggled to finish them, with some saying we could go to the next place without them finishing.

Yelp
This was a very chill place to sit and enjoy a flight; very welcoming and and laid back. There is a moderately sizing seating area besides about 10-12 barstools. The walls have artwork on them that actually is for sale! But anyway let's talk beer. There's a year round list and a few brews around for a limited time. The selection at the time was slightly hop heavy so I went for an ESB, a Stout, a Porter, and a wheat ale. All of the beers were well put together but nothing on this particular visit truly wowed me. There are several spots in a lot next to the brewery. If you do not find spots there, park a little ways away as the surrounding places evidently get touchy about parking. So while none of the beers stood out on this particular visit, I gotta give four stars because of the great venue and friendly bartender. I would definitely bring friends here to try this brewery again.

Yelp
I came for a pub crawl got a $6 beer and they automatically charged me an equivalent to a $2 tip with tax, what a scam!!!!!
google avatar

Caleb B.

Yelp
Probably the best beer in Beverly! I super appreciate how they offer some gluten reduced beers - my wife can actually drink a good quality beer and not get sick, now! The staff and ownership are all so friendly and so kind. I'd move in to the tap room if I could!

Yelp
It's on the smaller scale but worth a visit. Easy to get to and parking is available. The beers were delicious. So during my Friday night visit they had a private vendor for food Tex Mex and I got the frito pie and it was delicious got it twice. It's a frito bag of corn chips and they add cheese sauce and beans and it was sooo good

Yelp
Spending the day looking for events, and this place was having a macarons special event. I love me some macarons so I stopped in. This place is a BYOF (Bring Your Own Food) but they have snacks available. I think that's awesome. Also it's a pet and family friendly brewery. The bartender was very polite and provided prompt service. The place is clean and bright. It's a decent space for such a small area. And the brewery is in the back. Nice little stop if you're in the Beverly area. Oh and the macarons were delicious.

Yelp
What a great little brewery. This might have been my first nano brewery. Super cute place with great beers. In typical brewery fashion they have food trucks which is always a plus. They have flights for 14 dollars or you can choose from 3 different sizes. The guy working was super friendly and gave us suggestions on what we should try. Its very dog and kid friendly. It was a short walk from the commuter rail stop

Yelp
This is our new favorite Friday night place to go! Right outside Beverly Depot, it's the perfect spot to stop after getting off the train to end the work week! The beer is delicious (my favorite is the Blonde) and they are always brewing something new that you HAVE to try! Kid and DOG friendly, the place is set up with a few family style tables where it's BYOFOOD - bring your own food (and share if you want). They've been having food trucks lately in the parking lot, which has been fun & funky but not regular. They are only open Friday and Saturday - limited hours (close by 9PM- so get their early, especially if you want to snag a table - and they only accept credit cards/no cash. DEFINITELY check out this place!! I can't wait to see how this place evolves over time!!

Yelp
Sitting at the corner of the bar, drinking a wonderful English Bitter, chased by two incredible Fish Tacos from Lexie's Burger Bus. $9- too cheap! Kids and dogs everywhere. Most polite crowd ever in a bar room. Why aren't you here?

Yelp
First time. Glad we happened to be in Beverly. Next trip will be soon since we know there is a good brew option in the area. Really enjoyed chatting with the very friendly staff. Enjoy!

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere, great beer and stellar people. It's a very laid back, small town type place with 5 to 6 beers on tap at a time and plenty of special releases. I LOVE that they always have a food vendor whether it be a pop-up inside or a food truck. The food options are always changing and all of them have been very good. It's just an all around good spot to meet up with friends and relax on a Friday evening or Saturday afternoon. They are only open on the weekends and parking is limited but not impossible to figure out. GO!

Taz S.

Yelp
A selection of different styles of beer, with a few standards always in the rotation and frequently trying out some new ones. The beer is all good, and the atmosphere is even better. The new outdoor seating area is a nice addition - looking forward to it reopening this spring.

Yelp
One Saturday in the summer I took a spin by this place to check it out. The door was wide open and the bar had people inside when I went there and there was a sign on the sidewalk advertising the brewery saying they were open. So I proceeded to the bar to order a beer and try it out. A man confronted me and rudely told me that this was a private party. I couldn't believe how rude and condescending he was. Sorry guy for walking in on that private party. You won't ever see me in there again - ever.

Yelp
Paul and Christen are two of the nicest people you could meet. Down-to-earth, genuine and hard-working professionals. I love visiting their brewery and wish I could get there more often. It is a warm and inviting place that is child-friendly (in a good way!), and their beers are delicious, always coming up with something new. Plus, they are hilarious, and their comments on parenting their pack of three always bring a smile to my face. Can't wait to visit them again when my feisty 4-month old stops screaming and I feel like I will be a welcome customer!

Yelp
A brewery was highly needed on the North Shore, and it was so exciting to hear that Gentile was opening! The brewery is a little off the beaten path, but not too hard to find. We visited on the second day of opening, and the brewery was packed, but they were able to manage the crowd well. The owners were working and were super nice and friendly. They helped make suggestions and we were steered in the right direction! The blonde had a nice flavor and wasn't too heavy. My husband loved the porter, so much in fact that he purchased a growler to take home with us. There were a few other types of beers, and I will be sure to be back to try more! The prices are so reasonable and the beer is so good, that I am positive they will do well and get a nice following!

Ann P.

Yelp
We stopped by Gentile Brewing last night for a beer before dinner and got to enjoy their amazing new patio in the back. Wow! It's beautiful, welcoming and it was delightful to sit outside at the bar under the canopy and enjoy their delicious beer! We'll done with this new and inviting addition.

Yelp
A friendly local brewery with many events and rotating brews. After visiting just one time it was immediately apparent that the staff is welcoming to everyone including our four legged friends-Dogs! Will surely return to try some of their seasonal brews. They have a great website and are active on social media. You can always find out about their events and new brews

Yelp
Excellent place to grab a couple of fresh beers in a very cool and comfortably small space. Everyone is friendly and accommodating. Bar tenders know their beers. Prices are reasonable. We met a bunch of very cool people and even more very cool dogs. Tonight they had a food truck with empanadas that were also great. This is a fantastic place to spend a few hours. Be aware, they do not accept cash. Get the porter - very delicious.

Yelp
Stopped in here for beer while visiting the Speakeasy Donut pop-up event going on. Parking isn't that great but there was enough when we were there. We only had beers but the menu did look good. Very kid friendly atmosphere and the bartender was really friendly. I tried the Farmhouse but didn't really like it. We also tried the hefeweizen and that one was pretty good. Nice atmosphere. Oddly enough, they don't take cash. Usually it's the opposite but that was fine with us.

Yelp
I couldn't be happier that this little gem is just a mile down the road from us. It's been fun to watch Gentile grow and evolve since it opened up...adding more and more character to the space itself, and bringing in some fabulous pop ups/food trucks. As parents to 2 under age 5, we really appreciate how family friendly it feels here, and who doesn't love seeing the neighborhood pups too?! The owners are kind and down-to-earth, and I hope they continue to see growth and success. The porter is my favorite!

Yelp
Killer beer, awesome owners, and an intimate setting. Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
Love this place. We always feel welcome here even if we are the oldest ones there. Great atmosphere and no tv! That the best. Love seeing the families and the dogs. Oh. And the beer is great too.

Yelp
Beverley's new home for excellent fresh beer. Paul the owner is a great guy and has an amazing passion for beer. Now personally I'm a typical coors light bud light kind of beer kind of guy. Gentile beers are exceptionally smooth and flavorful and not over powering as I expected craft beer to be. Already looking forward to my next trip there.

Yelp
This is an awesome place for Beverly. It is chill and the people that gather here tend to be very down to earth. Family and dog friendly. I'd give it 5 stars, however, I have not been impressed by the beer itself. It's still worth checking out if you're in Beverly or close by, and because of the relaxed atmosphere, I'll personally still choose to come here for a couple beers over one of the many loud pub options in Bevtown. They also have pop ups with local food vendors on Saturday and are doing a cool job partnering with other local businesses. Hats off to the owners.

Yelp
Were so pumped to have this place in the neighborhood! Great place to chill and have some drinks. Love the beautuful wood tables and industrial feel. We tried all the beers in a flight and had no complaints. No food here, but with the limited hours, that's not really an issue. Do yourself a favor and check out thus awesome new local business!

Yelp
My fiance and I stopped in to Gentile Brewing on a Saturday afternoon recently, as we cannot pass up the chance to try a new brewery. The bartenders were super friendly and clearly passionate about the establishment. There were no food options, but we had just missed out on a food truck; our own bad timing. It is dog-friendly, which is great. In regards to the beer - it is not going to blow your socks off from an innovation standpoint, but everything we tried was very good. The Farmhouse Saison was particularly noteworthy (although it is not one of their 4 year-round standards). I think it is great that they have 4 tasty standard brews, but I do hope that they continue to branch out and offer some new beers on a continuing basis. I would definitely stop in at Gentile for a few beers when I am back in the area.

Chris N.

Yelp
Fresh beer is good beer, and you cannot get it any fresher than this tiny brewery in Beverly. Most of the beers are traditional European style brews, so expect lower ABVs and no hop bombs - instead you will find a rotating tap list that usually features a spectacularly light and drinkable Blonde, Porter, Stout, IPA and seasonal offerings (last week the Saison cousin Grisette). Outside of the beer the owners are the highlight of this place - a husband and wife team who encourage you to bring your dogs and children with you, as well as food from any of the local restaurants, or from one of their semi-regular popup vendors. Go and enjoy the beer, and the company of strangers - you won't regret it.

Yelp
First time there today for us. We attended a joint event at Gentile Brewing with La Victoria Taqueria. The place was packed. We love La Victoria but they do not have an alcohol license (hence, we wanted to try this out!). The food was excellent (per usual for La Victoria). The beer was very good but the service was "frat style". Long single line with one person behind the counter pouring (i.e. bottleneck), and one set of taps (limited space for pouring). They have a few picnic style tables and a 12-15 person bar (so seating is limited). You seemed to get faster service if you knew the owner(s) already, which is not a good way to attract new business, especially at an event meant to bring in new customers. It took my wife and I 20 minutes just to get a beer and setup a tab. Than if you wanted a refill, go to the end of the single line again... The owner was serving those already sitting at the bar (and those he knew), otherwise you had to go to the end of the line and wait again. My advice to them is to figure out how to handle an event with 70+ people attending. You cannot do it with one person pouring, taking names & setting up tabs, and taking the credit cards to pay. In their business, it's about product and service. Gentile Brewing is new (opened in March) so I'm hoping they'll figure this out. They have a good product, now they have to figure out how to provide service to match.

Yelp
We had our wedding here and it was fantastic! Christen and Paul and Emily made the whole thing so fun and special. We had a fairly small, casual wedding, and all we wanted was our friends and family to have a good time in a relaxed atmosphere with good drinks and good food. The brewery was perfect. The beer was delicious, as always, and Christen and Emily were so organized and did an amazing job setting up and making sure everything looked beautiful. Can't recommend Gentile enough!
